Terrible smell when you walk into the restaurant. Dark, dirty, stale, nasty. Very unappetizing. It does NOT look like these pictures! I had heard terrible stories of mold, rodents, people getting sick and food being bad. Thought I would check for myself. A child took my money, could not count change then an older woman came and corrected him, the whole time glaring at me!? They two of them went to go sit at a table and let me stand there while my food was sitting on the table beside the register. They didn't hand it to me; I finally went and checked the bag. I had stood there for quite a while. Not impressed with the food and I really wanted it to be good as it is right near my house. Very unfriendly when it seems like they should appreciate anyone who gives them a chance. I guess it used to be good. Different owners now. Almost everyone in town tells you to go out of town for Chinese food. With all the stories I have heard since, I don't know how they pass a health inspection. I tried to find their score online and nothing comes up. I really wonder if they somehow slipped through the cracks and escaped inspection. I don't see how they could pass. After spending part of my day at the Pembroke/Allenstown Old Home Day festivities, I decided to break for lunch and headed over to Mei's Chinese Cuisine, which is located in Suncook Village. My former coworker who lives in Allenstown, orders from Mei's quite a bit. This casual Chinese restaurant offers full service dining, takeout, and delivery. The place was pretty quiet and empty around 12:30PM on a Saturday. I decided to get takeout so I could enjoy my lunch outside on a nice day (while it lasted), the calm before the big impending tropical storm. I got the Luncheon Special U01: Chicken Lo Mein ($6.75 plus tax) with pork fried rice & egg roll, which was all ready in under 10 minutes. The portion of food was modest for the price, but enough food for lunch. The lo mein dish had soft noodles cooked with soft slices of boneless chicken and plenty of veggies (onions, mushroom slices, sprouts, cabbage) and water chestnuts for crunch. The pork fried rice had red roast pork cubes (some fat pieces), and traces of onion, sprouts, & egg in soft rice (light brown color). The egg roll though not huge was pretty good, which had a firm wrap (not greasy) filled with fresh green cabbage & celery, ground pork, and light seasoning. The food I had was pretty decent and the flavors were good, not too salty. Also, I was given a cup of duck sauce for the egg roll, but there was no plastic fork/spoon provided in the takeout bag. My family and I just got take out from this restaurant ( our favorite place was closed due to covid-19) so we decided to take a little risk and try something new. We were all 100% satisfied with the food even after surviving an almost 30 min. car ride home. My experience when I walked in was also wonderful... I was so pleased to see that they had recently built a separate station for take out while all of this virus-spreading is happening. The cooks that I saw briefly were wearing gloves , one even a mask, and the gentlemen that served me was very kind and also cautious. I moved to my current home four months ago and I only just found out that this place delivered. I ordered egg rolls, chicken teriyaki and the House Lo Mein. They have online ordering with an open text field for special instructions, so everything they recorded was exactly the way I wanted it. The price was in line with what you would usually pay for this type of food however the quality was certainly a notch above. The order arrived promptly and was still warm. All three menu items were delicious and well-made. The staff over there indeed knows what they're doing. I will definitely order more from them in the future. My review was for four stars instead of five because I felt as though the egg rolls were a little too oily. There may be no fix for that since they must be coming straight from the fryer to my house. Still, even though the taste was excellent, I really needed extra napkins when I was finished eating them. Not so much of a problem that you wouldn't enjoy the rest of the meal, though. read more

I'm not certain what possessed me to head up to Allenstown to get Chinese food, but was looking to try something new. From Hooksett, there are not a lot of solid options. Generally I had been going to Bonsai near the Auburn circle, but was starting to hate the rangoon, and for me, it is all about the rangoon. When living in Manchester, it was New Taiwan Garden or bust. Unfortunately, that's a bit of a hike nowadays. So, back to Mei's. I found this by just Googling Chinese places in the area, and although it was not the closest, it wasn't an unreasonable drive from Hooksett, so I gave it a shot. Expecting utter disappointment -- I bit into my first rangoon, and oh my god I almost fell off the couch. These are by far the best rangoons I have ever tasted. If you are a rangoon fan, you must try these. Please, for the love of god, do not change the recipe! As far as the rest of it...eh. The standard Pu Pu Platter components were all ok, but nothing that blew me away. And it seems like every other time I order, the fried rice is more bean sprout salad with some rice thrown in. Or, there are massive chunks of onion. Not sure what is going on with the disproportionate mix of ingredients. The pork is also a little fattier than what I typically see at other Chinese places. For me, this is only a takeout option. There is a restaurant with several booths, however, I can't recall ever seeing anyone sitting in there. It really is kind of a hole inside...they really could do more. The woman that works there (is this Mei??) is always very friendly...seems like she doesn't get many days off, unfortunately for her. The whole 'downtown' Allenstown area is just kind of unusual I guess...every time I drive down to pick up the food, there is always some dude standing outside of the deli across the street staring blankly at me as I go into Mei's. Odd. Well, not exactly a glowing review, but I seem to keep going back here, and it is for one reason alone -- the rangoon. We ordered the Pu-Pu Platter with a side of Chicken Fried Rice. The food was excellent!!! Plenty on the plate. We have been telling everyone we know about how good the service and food is. In the mood for Chinese food around Pembroke/Allenstown? Then look no further -- you MEI very well find something delicious here (bazinga!). Seriously, though, I love this place and make it a point to go here whenever I head up to NH. First of all, portion-wise, Mei's is very generous -- I generally get a combo meal, which is enough for two servings (though let's be real: I always eat everything in one sitting, and then I have an overeating tummyache. And it's totally worth it). Among the things I've tried from Mei's over time are the General Tsao's chicken (tender and actually discernible as chunks of real chicken, plus you can ask them to raise or lower the spiciness to your preference); pork fried rice (full of discernible chunks of pork and veggies and never overcooked); egg rolls (always the right blend of crispy and chewy); sesame chicken (crispy and coconut-y); and lo mein (full of veggies and seasoned well but not drowning in sauce, which I like). Among other dishes I've heard rave things about are the beef and peppers, the sweet n' sour chicken, the chicken wings, the crab rangoons, and the beef teriyaki. All of this is to say that in the many times myself and family members have consumed food from here, none of us has ever had a bad experience. Pickup orders are usually ready within 10-15 minutes of when you place them. I've only ever done takeout, but the staff are friendly and the restaurant is always very quiet and relaxed when I stop by -- I imagine it'd be a pleasant place to sit and enjoy a meal. I ordered sweet and sour chicken the lunch specia and the plate came back with hardly any rice I asked if I could order a cup was told I had to order a whole order which I did that even came back very small the whole time I was eating there were the owners children running around I felt like I was eating at a day care when I got the bill it came to over $17.00 before tip at that point I just wanted to get out of there I am 100% positive I will never be back there read more

Unfortunately since Mei left years ago this place was taken over by other people. I've been told the new owners are the owners of the Hong Kong Island from concord. Strangely I had eaten at Hong kong island when it was in concord and I had no complaints, ever since they took over Meis the menu stayed the same but the food is very inconsistent . I used to love getting meis seafood hot and sour soup, full of fish, scollops and shrimp with with great flavor. Now it's muddled down with maybe two shrimp and nonexistent other seafood, really poor quality. I also try and order different days of the week to see if it's s different cook but it's not. I got a lunch special the other day, the chicken wings were rotten, smelled so gross I wouldn't eat them. The fried rice was very old and dry and the egg roll??? What was that ?? it was stuffed with just cabbage. I'm very disappointed in this place it seems like they just don't care. Because of its location it's the only Chinese restaurant with 15 miles. Everything I have ever ordered from Mei's has been excellent! I have been going here for years and I not inly run over at lunch time but often stop in on my way home. Mei is wonderful and I;ve been on a diet for awhile now and she made he a love cal low salt meal that was excellent! Mei and her family have always stepped up and given me excellent meals. The Hot and Sour soup is a must if you like that soup! Like I said I have yet to have bad meal here. I would recommend you give it a try! read more

Mei's Chinese and I have quite the history. My family and I have been ordering from this locally owned restaurant for the past 15 years. At the beginning the quality of the food and the location was amazing. Great taste and clean facility. Though we usually order takeout from Mei's, the few times we have been seated inside have been far from amazing. Dirty facility and slow service. Workers often have an "attitude". Very empty inside the restaurant. Was absolutely horrified to see dead bugs on the floor and critters flying around the interior of the restaurant. Extremely pricy and poor quality food. Would not recommend if you are looking for a meal of culture and quality. Not to mention I got food poisoning once from it. read more

Meis really is pretty good chinese food. standard stuff, but always hot and fresh. I don't really understand comments on portion size recently. I have gone here for years and find the quality and amount to be above average. Crispy duck was removed from the menu, bad decision in my mind as it was always very good. We can't go wrong with Mei's. Everything I've tried I love. I especially love how they fry with lotus flour- keeps things light and not drowning in a heavy batter. The sesame chicken is unique and we love the General Tso's. Mei's Specials and Dinner specials are very good deals. Lots of food, very easy to share or have leftovers. Meis Chinese is a good Chinese spot for people living in Allenstown/Pembroke. The prices are decent and portions are larger than most restaurants. The first time I came, I ordered pad Thai which was horrible and inedible. It was bland and greasy. I wanted to give it a second chance however and came back and ordered the lo mein is an excellent choice and tastes amazing! The box is stuffed and makes for a great, filling meal. We were here at 1 p.m. on a Tuesday and were the only people in the place. Mei (who waited on us) was friendly. We had the General Tso's chicken and Broccoli with Beef. The lunch specials come with soup (egg drop or hot and sour), egg roll, and white rice or pork fried rice. $7.99. The food was typically overly sweet (in the style that Asian restaurants assume Americans crave), but better than I expected to find in this little town.
