The food is a B+, the people are an A+. The owner seems to know every customer, and they had a pretty full house. Somehow I lost a headphone and couldn't find it, Sang (I believe) helped me look then contacted me and offered to meet on his day off. I was passing through for work and couldn't meet then, but he held on to it for me and offered to comp my meal when I came back in. I didn't take him up on it because he was the one helping me, but the whole establishment is like that. The service is slightly slow, but it's because everyone is literally talking their ear off because of how nice they are. The food is very tasty, good portions, but the friendliest owners and staff. I leave reviews about food and this might be my first review where the people owning it were the highlight. If you're in Sandusky or going across northern Ohio, stop in. The pho is also very good. If you look through my reviews you'll see I've been hunting the perfect pho for a decade across the US! Came here w/ a gift card as we passed through town. Friends recommended the pho but we didn't love it. Taste was fine but didn't live up to the raving we heard. Bowl was large & lotsa broth which we didn't drink. ($12) Portion size was rather small on the crispy chicken w/ veggies I had. (12$). Taste was good & chicken was fairly crispy. Could have used more vegetables as I had only 2 pcs of broccoli. Kinda disappointed I couldn't sub for fried rice for an up charge. I woulda paid $3 charge to sub out the white rice but they said they could only add on rice which didn't come as a side. All the rice options were large entree sizes with the smallest being $11! So I kept w/ white & it was a small bowl not even filled all the way. Inside was nice & very clean but sorta dark w/ the shades drawn so it was a bit gloomy. Weird music played in background. This place is a gem of a restaurant in Sandusky! The only regret I have is not ordering more food while I was there. We went here while visiting the famous Cedar Point amusement park. So, it's not surprising that park food can only be tolerated for so long until the adult palate screams: no more please. This restaurant was one of my saviors! So many other restaurants in the area are more of the same type of food in the park, so, thank you, Mekong, for being what you are. The restaurant is very large, very spacious and complete with a very extensive menu. I wasn't looking for much, just some simple veggies and rice, but I asked for it to be even simpler than on the menu, and they granted this request no questions asked, no funny looks and no hesitation whatsoever. The food came out before I could even think about what else to order - that may be why I didn't order more! The food was there, ready for me to eat before my eyes could figure out what more to order. The veggies were a lovely variety, fresh, crisp and sautéed up very flavorfully. The food was brought out so quickly after it was made, it was piping hot. I don't remember the last time I ordered food at a restaurant, and it was served as hot, because it was almost right off the range/ stove or burner they used to cook it up. The seasoning was just right, light and fresh. The rice was fluffy and perfect for accompanying my veggies. Loved this place so much, that I wanted to go back! After a long day at Cedar Point this girl was HANGRY so anything and everything sounded good. Luckily, Mekong's did the trick. The staff were very friendly and our food came out fairly quickly. Mekong has been a family favorite for years. We live just outside of DC and are spoiled with the restaurants, quality and options. In the past couple years food quality has gone down at Mekong, not as fresh or tasty as it used to be. Crispy spring rolls were very small, not much filling and am guessing they were frozen. Tofu clay pot was just okay. Also...after a day of travel I really wanted to enjoy a cocktail but they had no mixers or juice. Poor planning around the holidays. When you advertise "authenticity" in your name, you are somewhat set up for criticism. I didn't come with high expectations. If something is expensive, classy or authentic... there's no need to say it and there's value in that. We ordered the soft spring roll aka summer roll, pho tai, pho with meatballs, fried pork dumplings, and grilled pork with rice. 1. Soft Spring roll had no herbs, cucumbers, any other veggie than lettuce. The sauce was light brown and slimy? No peanut flavors or acidity with dish sauce. And the noodles in the roll were soggy. 2. Pho broth was bone bland and lack the richness and cattiness a home cooked pho would offer. The sides to the pho were a bit sad too as no one wants wilted basil. There was also no cilantro. Just basil. Which made the most popular Vietnamese dish completely sub par in flavor. Just like the fresh roll. 3. Grilled pork was good. Although I've never had it cut up for me in this way. Usually it's a full pork chop or two but I had two kids so maybe they were helping me feed them. An egg doesn't come with it so I had to add it to my order which is also out of the norm and expectation. The fish sauce that came with it was very good! But use a little as it does overpower the entree. No daikon just carrots and some cucumbers. That's ok I still ate everything up from this particular entree. Same goes for the fried pork dumplings but the soy sauce needs a little love. Overall this is not authentic. The reason why I even stopped by is because I'm at the great wolf lodge with my young kids and wanted to support something local and close to the resort. A lot of families come here from the Midwest and this was a missed opportunity for the owners to really let the Vietnamese culture and food shine. I'm from the Detroit side of Michigan. I've had Pho from Madison Heights and in Grand Rapids. Come on Sandusky. Do better. Service was wonderful. Our waitress was very attentive and helped a chaotic meal be a moment of peace for two very tired parents on vacation with small kids. Weekend trip in Sandusky area and happen to find this place along the way. The restaurant is fairly big and with a bar area. I went during dinner hour and they are packed with people. The server is not quite attentive, but given that he is juggling with multiple table. I got the Roasted Pork and Wonton Egg Noodles. The soup is slight blend for me and can use a little more flavor. The food here was great. The phō was very good with steak and a aromatic broth. The banh mi was under appetizers and it was a six inch I'd say and was also very good with a nice crust on the bread. What do you do when you find yourself in the middle of the mid west, thousands of miles away from the mecca of pho joints in the US? Well, you fire up the Yelp! app and search for the nearest pho joint of course... and luck would have it, Mekong Authentic Vietnamese restaurant pops up only 5 miles away from me. Armed with this knowledge, then I know I have to give it a try. I went there with my expectations set as low as possible, as I know the quality of pho inversely correlates to the distance of where the major viet towns (OC/Houston/San Jose)... so what is the verdict? I will definitely say the place deserves 1* for the most well stocked beer selections of any pho joints I have ever encountered. The other Star is for the friendly host/server that provided top notch service. Unfortunately, those are the only stars I can dole out for this place... the quality of pho, which the server told me is their most popular item on the menu was sub-par and borderline mediocre, even with my low expectations. And I was so glad that I had packed my emergency stash of instant pho that I got from Costco, yes instant pho..., to satisfy my cravings afterward. Nice place if you're in the mood for Asian food in the Sandusky area. The ambiance is nice and clean and the food is really good. We were welcomed by a boy barely in his teens and let's just say that he's still learning the correct ways to welcome guests. Our server was nice though and the food was impressive. We ordered the sampler for two in appetizer and found all the items to be quite yummy. The seafood in spicy brown sauce was really good but for some reason they won't serve it with fried rice instead of brown or white rice even if you're ready to pay extra! The other item we had was the pan fried seafood noodles which came with scallops, shrimp, broccoli, water chestnuts, celery, onion, baby corn and was very impressive as well. Now the pho on the other hand, eh I've had pho from many places and this most definitely was not my favorite but on a whim while in the area it was good enough. The egg rolls were crispy and delish. The fillings were flavorful. However, they were a bit too greasy for my liking. The dipping sauce was good. The spring roll was alright because the dipping sauce was a bit bland. The pork dumplings were decent. The Pho was decent, with loads of toppings. The star of the night was the seafood in spicy basil sauce. It was flavorful and seafood was cooked perfectly. We were driving in the Ohio tpke n looking for an indoor dining restaurant for dinner on 1/2/21. Stumbled upon Mekong authentic Vietnamese restaurant on Yelp n stopped by. . Made the right decision. It's not a very fancy place but the food was good. Started out w the seafood pho, appetizer sampler and chicken wings. They were all really delicious. For entree I had the seafood in spicy lemongrass sauce, my husband had the beef in spicy basil sauce and our son had the spicy battered crispy chicken. The dishes were yummy, portions were reasonable and all come w white or brown rice. The restaurant is clean n observes social distancing. Friendly attentive staff.
