I should've known better. The fact is, asian food in alaska overall is trash, but in the valley, it is especially bad. At least anchorage has a few exceptions. Not here. But I was out and about today and saw this place and Pad Thai sounded good so I decided to take the risk. The place is nice inside and the girl at the counter who took my to go order was super sweet, so this is not a service issue. It's the food. It's just...meh. Marginal is even a reach. I ordered the fresh spring rolls, pad Thai with shrimp and extra veggies, and panang curry with shrimp, all to go. Total cost $83 + tip. Ratings as follows: Fresh Spring rolls-3/10 Veggies are sad and not very fresh. At least they put a little bit of cilantro in there but these did not taste like the fresh spring rolls you would get anywhere in the lower 48. Also: that nasty sweet chili sauce that most places here seem to serve with their springs rolls is just...not it. Shrimp Pad Thai with extra veggies-3/10 No egg. No green onion. They gave me 'extra veggies' but the veggies they gave don't belong in Pad Thai. I got broccoli, cabbage, and carrots....lol. As for the flavor.....VERY bland and you almost can't tell it's Pad Thai at all. Panang Curry with Shrimp-3/10 Okay so this was the saddest dish of all, because the flavor was 'okay,' but that was it. Literally ALL you get in the panang curry broth is whatever meat you asked for, thus mine had shrimp. NO VEGGIES. NO HERBS. NOTHING else. THAT was pretty sad. I've never seen Panang curry served with literally nothing but the broth and meat. Service was a little slow since they seemed understaffed but the lone server was friendly. Mekong Thai is a nice restaurant with very clean and bright interior. The menu has a good selection of items but isn't overwhelming like some places. The food is good but if you like spice I would recommend a spice level of 7+ otherwise it is pretty mild. All of the dishes are good, especially the curries and stir fry options. The seafood options are cooked perfectly with tender shrimp and scallops. The crispy wings are really good while the crab Rangoons are average. read more

I hadn't had a chance to come here again for quite some time(maybe 4-6ish yrs), I was SO happy when my food came out and was just as amazing as it always had been way back when I used to order (lots) takeout from them! I didn't see my old friend(the man that always loved how spicy I could eat his food) but there was a young man, quieter, but very polite! They have done some nice updating in the last years, and it was a clean and very pleasant atmosphere. Service was fast(very quiet night), only a few patrons & a couple takeout people in/out. Food was very good, pictured is the Kim Himaparn(sp?) & trad Pad Thai. Not pictured, the fresh spring rolls- not to be skipped!! The only thing I will say, is I told him "very spicy" for the Pad Thai(I LOVE spices, handle them way too well) and it was not spicy(for me). Maybe he took a look at my average middle age white woman self and thought I couldn't handle it, but I would have loved it to be a bit "more"! First time visit but not the last. New to area so using Yelp to find interesting new places. This is a keeper and will be we will regular visitors. My staple to judge Thai and Asian restaurants is always the soup. I had my Shrimp Tom Yum Ga. A new version of my favorite soup. It was labeled Spicy and I did not add more. The broth was spicy and hot with lots of fresh vegetables and medium sized shrimp . I counted at least 16 in my medium sized bowl. It was very flavorful above par for many restaurants. It came with a bowl of sticky white rice. I added the rice to provide additional body. I highly recommend this soup and this restaurant located in strip mall on Hwy 3 the Parks a little past center of Wasilla. Oma ordered the beef and Broccoli meal. She said it to was delicious and she had enough to take home a lunch portion. It was served on rice and was an ample portion. The restaurant is well decorated and clean. Good for families and medium groups. I noticed that it had a steady takeout business. The menu is sufficient and varied with most of normal dishes. We had 3 large egg rolls as a appetizer. Do you know what I never talk about with the review? The walk up. What's the front of the store look like? How's parking? How awkward or easy is the transition from the entrance to finding a seat. All of those things are pretty easy with Mekong. There is a clear sign when you walk in that says seat yourself. There is a wide open dining area which makes it easy to transition to a table. The staff is on top of things. They have contactless menus!! Huge plus! Most of meals specify chicken, beef, or pork, but tofu is also an allowed substitute. Drinks: On their drink menu they have hot chai tea. On a rainy and soggy evening, it was perfect. It's not the milky chai tea. It's actually just a Twinnings bag of tea. I had kind of hoped for a proprietary blend. The set up was great thought. Steel tea kettle, cup with saucer, sweeteners. Appetizer: The crying tiger. Think steak salad where there is more steak than salad. It's quite a decent serving of steak. The steak is medium and the sauce is salty and spicy. Meal: There was a curry place I loved in Florida years ago. The perfect blend of curry to coconut milk to spice. I had found no place to match it. Until now. The spicy was got my nose running and my water glass empty, but it was so full of flavor. Plenty of veggies and tofu. Enough sauce that you could spoon in rice and not lose the soupy. My only complaint was the mushrooms. I was almost halfway before I found one. I had forgotten there were mushrooms in it. There were several more once I dug a little. Panang Curry: flavor of sauce good. Had what I can only imagine is canned chicken inside, rubbery and even one bite that tasted fishy. No vegetables in the curry, and it's $18?! I usually order to go here, but so far the food is consistently good. I have ordered a few things and it was all tasty. My go-to's are the pad Thai, Mekong chicken, fresh spring rolls, and of course the Pho soup (when I'm sick and when I'm not, like hungover). The mango and sweet rice is always a great finisher. Service is good, my order is always ready and waiting for me when they said it would be. Friendly, every time I have been in there- so definitely a plus. I was very disappointed with our takeout order. To support our local business during this pandemic, we decided to try this restaurant for one of my favorite dishes, pho. Pho is originally a Vietnamese dish but many other Asian countries have their own version of it. I was looking forward for the Thai version of it. It's sad to say but it has got to be the worse one that I've tried so far. I was so excited to see one of our local restaurants was still open and gave out discounts for essential workers and past local purchase. However, that excitement quickly went away. There were barely any basil and hoisin sauce in my takeout box. The beef were cut in thick slices and soaked in the hot broth. For takeout, this was a terrible thing to do. Beef is quick to cook. A few seconds in the steamy hot broth would be adequate. Leaving the meat in the hot broth overcooked it and made it taste like leather. They should just cut their beef in thin slices, lightly cooked it (rare,) and set it aside so customers can put them in their broth when they're ready to eat. That would solve the problem. I hate to give out bad reviews especially during this unprecedented time. However, I have to be honest with my reviews. Hopefully the restaurant would make some adjustments to better serve the community. read more

Mekong Thai Cuisine is tucked away, like most restaurants in Wasilla, in one of the many strip malls that buffer the Parks Highway. What it lacks in atmosphere it makes up in excellent service and delicious food. My mother and I visited for lunch and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We were greeted by the friendly girl who serves here. We started with their fresh spring rolls, which come 3 to a plate, as an appetizer. I like that Mekong uses cilantro instead of mint in their rolls. I ordered their pad thai which was wonderful. Unlike a lot of restaurants, they didn't smother the noodles in sauce. It was perfectly balanced with the portion and complimented by the sprouts, peanuts, chives and fresh lime. This is some of the best Pad Thai I have had anywhere in the U.S. and I wish I could take it back to San Francisco with me. read more

Small quaint restaurant in the middle of a business center, you won't realize until you walk in. The food was taking a bit of time to begin with, took sometime to prepare food for 7 hungry travelers. we ordered the Lamb-basil, red curry catfish curry, chicken fried rice, beef pho, tofu drunken noodles. The lamb-basil was amazing and had the right spice and gravy thickness, the red curry catfish was a bit salty in a few places. The chefs messed up the spice level on the fried rice, a level 5 is pretty spicy considering that we love spicy food, and have a pretty high tolerance level. The restaurant was empty, clean and relaxing, the menu items were a bit pricey. Only saw one person (our waitress) the whole time while we were there. The waitress we had was very soft spoken but got the job done. We received our food at a reasonable time but the food was just okay and not the same taste as other Thai places we have visited. The chicken used in their Pad Thai was chicken breast and seemed dry and tasteless which didn't go well with the noodles. The fresh rolls could have been better too. When we were about to leave I heard cussing which sounded like a guy coming from the kitchen area, I thought this is not good. A well kept front end should match a well kept back end (Kitchen) too. This was our first time to visit this place and maybe it was a slow time during the day for them and maybe they were not ready. The place is a seat-yourself style restaurant and has always been very clean for us. One star loss because they have no wine or beer. We keep coming back for their fresh spring rolls (rolled tight with peanut dipping sauce), chicken larb, and chicken salad with a peanut salad dressing. This is my first time in here. When I walked in, it felt awkward because you have to walk to the back of the dining room to "get seated." The kid looked at me like he was confused and I asked him if I needed to seat myself, that's fine. I made my selection and waited on someone to take my order. I waited so long I ended up asking the kid if I could place my order after 20 mins. He brought me a water which had something green floating in it, so I asked for another. I ordered the Panang Chicken, which was flavorful, but the chicken was weird, not sure how to explain it. It looked like chicken, but didn't taste quite like chicken. Mekong is in a strip mall, like most restaurants in Wasilla (and Anchorage for that matter). It's in the same strip mall that the Wonder Bread Outlet occupies along the Parks Highway. You'd be better off scoring some outdated Twinkies (that's an oxymoron, isn't it?) for lunch, then going to Mekong for Thai food. I have eaten here several times and always, always leave disappointed wanting the food to have been better. It's a nice location, nicely decorated place with ample seating and nice table clothes and linen but the food is just so-so. The chicken satay, for instance, is deep fried. I have eaten Thai food all over this country (and state) and this is the only place I know of that deep fries their chicken satay. It's not coated in anything except maybe a little flour and you can barely see the turmeric or curry on it. It's fried until it is a dry, stringy, chewy piece of chicken jerky. The peanut sauce is as thick as regular peanut butter and tastes as though no other spices or oils were added to it. They charge $10 for this... The pad thai is a little better, but it lacks the condiments that you come to expect from any Thai place - crispy bean sprouts, sugar, peanuts and lime. Here you get a tiny, dried up lime wedge. The pad thai comes with chicken and shrimp and all of it was well prepared but there was no spice, no flavor - none of the complex flavors you expect from Thai food. This pretty much sums up the curry dishes and soups too. It's just dulled down and I don't know why. Sure this is Wasilla but even here there are other ethnic places that know how to throw on the spice. Okay, I am lying. Only the Mexican places throw on the spice...there are some decent sushi places but this is the only Thai place in town. Maybe that explains how they have stayed in business so long (guessing about ten years or more). The place is however, rarely full, even on a Friday for lunch I saw only 4 other people. The Thai foods here tasted just a little different than what I used of eating in the Greater Houston area. Maybe not as authentic tasting, but I have no business judging since I never been to Thailand. But what I did tasted were very tasty and enjoyable. We ate everything. Will I eat here again? The food took forever to come out, people who came in after us got their food first. The appetizer was called sauté chicken. It was deep fried and the skewered chicken came on a piece of bread....for $7. Then our entrees, mine a pork and my husbands a lamb. I could taste nothing but salt and it was inedible. My husband had to pick out huge pieces of grissle from his lamb. When we mentioned we didn't like the food, the staff didn't ask why or care. Starting with sweet and sour sauce so watered down it had no flavor, dishes coming from the kitchen slow that it took them 20 minutes to get our appetizer to us, another 45 minutes to receive our 3 dishes. Asked for their version of spicy rice, received just fried rice. Not one of the 3 dishes had any Thai chilies in them, never heard of a Thai restaurant not cooking at least a little spicy. Food was very bland, 2 of the dishes featured basil but couldn't taste it due to all the bell pepper in them. Will never go back to this restaurant again. read more

It's been about 10 years since we last visited this restaurant so we figured we'd give it another shot. The atmosphere hasn't changed much since the last time: still cold with harsh, high fluorescents above in an old suspended ceiling. They have done the best they can on a shoestring budget making a nice (but completely dark) entry and curtains, lattice to hide the mechanical above, etc., but seems they spent all they have earned over the years on 2 flat screens. At least they were not blaring sports while we were there. The family was having a dinner break in the kitchen when we arrived and they didn't see us right away. At 5PM, we were the first to arrive for dinner, although they had been open for lunch earlier and the phone was ringing for take out while others trickled in for pick ups. Having already perused the take-out menu, we ordered right away. After the lady took our order, the next stop was the ladies' room. Down the very old hallway adjacent to the kitchen there are two one-room restrooms. The ladies' is first on the left and shares a door with the kitchen. Thank goodness for the stick-on labels warning patrons to lock the door and not enter the kitchen? Fastest pee ever afraid the lock might not keep one of the typical family toddlers from visiting me unexpectedly. It's an old building so it would take a lot to spend on fixing it up and that's not usually in the cards for little family-owned places like this. You have to look past the shopvac in the corner as you wash up. Back to the table and I had an absolutely sparkling goblet of ice water tinted with lemon awaiting me. I have never ever seen such clean stemware in a restaurant and it tasted amazing with the little bits of lemon in the water. I am not used to chlorinated water, so I would have noticed, even with the lemon, if it was too heavily chlorinated. It is possible this place is not on city water, or else they use better bottled water or a really good filtration system. I ordered a Thai Iced Coffee and we decided to share an order of fresh spring rolls. The sweet chili sauce was a little different than we're used to having, but it was great! The rolls were also great, with real cilantro (not parsley). The menu said mint, but I think they use cilantro interchangeably. It works in spring rolls and without cilantro (or mint) in them, you ought to just get up and ask for the bill as it's a bad omen. We decided to stay away from the soups as they are almost always a disappointment. Once you've had real Tom Kah Kai with straw mushrooms and kaffir lime, you'll be disgusted with anything less. We ordered three other dishes: Pad Kee Mao (Drunken Noodles) with pork, Panang Curry, and Wild Boar Basil. Pad Kee Mao was good, but not the explosion of flavor we're always seeking. The pork was tender and the stir fry was cooked well. The sauce was adequate in quantity but it could have used more basil. Or something. We like the really spicey and really amazing dishes, like Kiew Tiew Hyuang (sp?) we've been trying to find since Siam Spicy closed down in Anchorage several years ago (awesome dish made with pre-soaked then stir-fried thin rice noodles tossed with a pesto of sorts of coriander, cilantro, and thai chili peppers with a little fish sauce and palm sugar). Served like a soup with a small dish of steamed rice on the side, panang is one of those dishes you can really stretch with rice. Darn, I should have asked for brown rice, not sure if they offer it. Panang was OK but a touch too salty and not quite sweet enough. We ordered chicken only because the other choice was beef and I'm not a fan of beef in Thai restaurants, not sure why. The chicken was, as we suspected it would be, exclusively strips of white breast meat. It always looks dry and overcooked. In this case, it was better tasting than it looked but I wish they would use dark thigh meat. The Wild Boar Basil was expertly cooked with tender, juicy pork. I highly doubt it was really wild boar, but for the same price as pork basil, we went with the more exotic sounding dish. Again, it could have used a bit more thai basil, but at least it was lightly spiced. Since I forgot to specify level of spice, I was disappointed that there are no longer little caddies of condiments on the tables. It's pretty common to see these in Thai restaurants and they generally include a chili paste, sometimes some dry chili powder, anda few other items. However, they are probably pretty hard to keep clean and stocked enough to satisfy both the customers and the health inspector. Overall, I'd say this is an average restaurant. I would go back to try some other dishes, like maybe the Emerald Chicken or the Dancing Squid. Maybe even a soup next time since we had straw mushrooms in the Wild Boar Basil. Very marginal Thai food. Pad Thai was as bland as I have ever had. My husband enjoyed his cashew chicken dish. Can't say we will be back.
