I've driven by this place probably 97 times. I've always been curious, but never curious enough to stop. I was pleasantly surprised! It's a classic diner/greasy spoon, but a pretty good one at that! It's a great place to stop on the way up to Talkeetna or the Denali area. Portions are enormous, service is friendly, coffee refills are fast, and the coffee quality is suspect. Only downside is that you will probably see other diners here wearing confederate flag t-shirts, as we did. Apparently some people in the northernmost state identify with a treasonous country formed in the southernmost part of it. read more

Chicken fried steak is my go to every time I visit a breakfast diner. When I tell you that this was the best chicken fried steak I've had in my entire life, I am not over exaggerating. The meat was so tender and juicy and the breading was crispy. I usually always make sure there is gravy on the chicken fried steak because a lot of times the steak itself will be dry and/or tough, but this chicken fried steak didn't even need gravy because it was already so delicious and well seasoned without it. And this is the first diner I have ever been to that has included 3 eggs with their breakfast items. The lady taking me and my friend's order was extremely sweet, she got us lemons for our waters and we were even able to stay seated for 3 and a half hours, the ambiance was a little less inviting and not the vibe I really like in restaurants but the food and service make up for it all. Large clean and open restaurant with tables and booths. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner with a senior menu items. The waitress was prompt and friendly. She refilled our coffees frequently never allowing us to run out. A high point for me. This is definitely a local's favorite. The Firepit Omelet is 3 eggs, spicy hot links, onions and cheese. Comes with your choice of potatoes and bread, biscuit or a pancake. Excellent The prices are reasonable and they accept credit credit and debit cards with a 3% charge added as many restaurants are doing now. Also like most businesses they are hiring. The do not accept checks or American Express. No outside seating but ample free parking. Overall I believe this is and excellent restaurant just past central Wasilla on the Parks Highway. read more

We decided to give here a try as Cadillac Cafe could not accommodate a party of our size. This is a big establishment and we almost didn't go in as there was no one in the parking lot and thought they may have been closed. We had a large party and everything was fine service wise. She was prompt, attentive and friendly. The menu is HUGE and full of many comfort foods. I was famished with low blood sugar so it was hard to pick something when many things sounded good. I had the Southwest Burger which had green chilies, pepper jack cheese, and salsa on it. It was a pretty massive burger! I do believe however that this was a frozen patty (it looked like one texturally and had the weird light brown "grill marks") so I was a bit disappointed in that. Flavors were fine. The veggies seemed fresh, which I give a nod to. I didn't really eat them as I felt they didn't belong on my southwest inspired burger :) you have a couple side options and I went with fries and they were basic your every day fry. I sampled some of the other foods that were ordered and the pancakes were fluffy and delicious. I can never make pancakes at home that taste like restaurant style! The garlic mash was good too. My aunt had the fried chicken and you could hear that crispy crunchy chicken skin....YUM! Prices were reasonable and what you'd expect to pay anywhere, about $13 for my meal plus $3 for a soda. Since living out in North Wasilla for the summer we've gone here often. First experience was ordering ribs to go. They weren't bad but always on the lookout out for the best ribs, these were mediocre. They have homemade pies, cheesecake and fancy rolled cakes. I've been disappointed with their cheesecake. It's overdone, so dry and tasteless. They serve breakfast all day. The wait staff is very friendly. They actually gave us complimentary dessert, to go, one evening! The prices are reasonable. I ordered BABY BACK RIBS, I received standard ribs. What a let-down, to say the very least. Not only did I not receive baby backs, but the ribs I received were beyond dry roasted, beyond dry and tough. This is no exaggeration! The best part of the meal was the vegetable medley. I ended up taking the ribs home, to hopefully revive them in a slow cooker. The saddest part of the entire situation, was that the owner of the restaurant was the cook! He of all persons should had known better than to serve a meal like that, needless to say, that is one business that I will not be visiting again. I had plenty of leftovers for the next day. Nonetheless, the taste of the food is a bit of a disappointment. The baby back ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender but a bit bland. My skillet was served with very old over cooked potatoes and cold ham & veggies. The eggs were ordered over hard, but didn't quite get there. We were all a bit overwhelmed at the choices because they had a large variety of American food. I found myself wanting many different things which is not too bad here, the prices are reasonable. I ordered the grilled cheese sandwich with a side of sweet potato fries and a cup of chili. It was all quite tasty! Our waitress was also very attentive and always making sure our coffee was refilled. The only complaints I had were the entrance was not well kept, their plants were covered in lots of dust and the younger lady at the register was not very cordial. We had stopped in for brunch with the family and the waitresses were already complaining about other tables. They kept saying they were out of everything. I order an omelette with home fries, they used canned spinach in my omelette and the homes fries weren't home fried. It looked like they baked a potato and chopped it up on my plate. All the cups were dirty so coffee was out of the question. I got chicken tenders for my son and they were rock hard. Originally being from Jersey, the land of diners, diners have a special place in my heart. Alaska is severely lacking in proper diners. Denali is the closest I found to the real thing. Basic,ally, it's a shitload of mediocre comfort food. I absolutely loved it. I also loved that they have classics like Reubens and Monte Cristos, which are impossible to find in Alaska. The coffee was bottomless and always hot, the service was friendly, and the place just *felt* like a proper diner. I almost wanted to cry. And blessedly, the diner had a clean bathroom, which is often a make or break issue for me. They had homemade pies, which i was looking forward to trying, but my food was so huge and my coffee so bottomless, there simply was no room. And holy hell, the coleslaw was sooooooo good. Nom nom. And I had a ton of food leftover, so "hello tomorrow's breakfast!" My dining partner appreciated that they serve breakfast all day in true diner fashion. If they were open 24 hours, it would be perfect. I would drive all the way from Anchorage to the valley in the middle of the night just to have pie and coffee at 3 am.
