Visiting the Lake Wales area for a day trip. After checking out the Bok Tower Gardens (a must see), we wanted to find a local dining spot, not a chain restaurant or fast food place. We found Melanie's Seafood! Small place and simple decor. All the cooking is down out in the open. Our server, Cricket, was friendly and inviting and gave us some good recommendations. I had the Mahi Mahi Reuben sandwich with potato salad. My wife ordered the Crabcake sandwich with their own coleslaw. We just drank water. The food was really tasty and welcome. We haven't had any seafood in a while so this was greatly anticipated and it was not disappointing. So tasty and different. The coleslaw was really interesting and flavorful. I asked for the ingredients and was told the secret. Not giving it away here! The restaurant is clean, simple and organized well. It was somewhat quiet because the start of the college football season just started and everyone was watching at home. The service was terrific and attentive. We were looking for a good place to meet family driving over from the west coast and this was perfect. Very friendly and welcoming. We followed our server's recommendations and had some of the best fish dishes we've had in a long time. Sides were also delicious. Enjoyed it so much that I would drive out of my way to stop here again. Food and service are great and they really make you feel welcome with small town hospitality. This was a nice surprise. A cozy little place that I enjoyed so much I almost want to keep it a secret. We went about lunchtime on a Saturday and there plenty of seats including a small table outside. Wanting something simple, I ordered the beer battered fish. But I also didn't want the usual freezer-to-fryer french fries so I ordered something I don't usually care for - coleslaw. Turned out to be the best coleslaw I have ever eaten. It wasn't too sweet or a runny pile of mayonnaise and cabbage. This was coleslaw the way it was meant to be made. The fish was cooked perfect - crispy and not dried out. The menu featured a great selection of fresh seafood dishes. The restaurant itself is simple, with minimal decor and an open kitchen, but it was very clean, including the restrooms. Everything, and I mean everything we ate was delicious. Manhattan clam chowder, cold shrimp, fish and chips and a lobster roll. Burger was cooked as requested and all special requests were honored. Hubby said "it was a GOOD burger". In his language that's like 5 stars. The mahi in the tacos can be fried, grilled or blackened. Two tacos, chock full with slaw, yummy corn salsa & fish. Plenty of fish. Served with white rice & black beans. Would have liked a little more interesting rice and to have salsa and avocado available. The creole mayo was a nice addition suggested by the server. Service was very good. Server was sweet & cheery. Offered to-go cups. Pie was perfectly sweet. The music was great when we first got there. As we were finishing someone else made the music selections and it was a bit too edgy. read more

I wish I could give this amazing restaurant 10 stars. My Mom learned about it from a magazine article two years ago. We visited it and were AMAZED at their food quality, taste, and their service, and have gone back probably 20+ times since. Service is personal, helpful and exceptional, every time. We have met locals who say they dine there almost daily, LOL. Every fish/seafood we have tried--Beer Battered fried shrimp (regular and/or light batter); beer battered Cod fish; Grouper; pompano; shrimp with grits ) have been superbly cooked to perfection. Never over or undercooked, dry, or fishy. They nail it every time. Also, we have enjoyed MANY fresh vegetables here such as sauteed FRESH spinach, green beans, cauliflower, mixed veggies, and also chilled coleslaw. Their yummy french fries are home-made from real potatoes, and the sweet potato fries are home made also, as is the coleslaw.
