Love coming here for a pint and a good meal. They have a super large selection of both food and drink, but their sandwiches are their specialty. My personal favorite is the chicken quesadilla, but I haven't tried something I don't like from there. The service is very good and all the servers are very friendly, making for a great experience. There are eclectic decorations around the restaurant including a giant car suspended from the ceiling and historical newspapers about the area. I order the same sandwich every time and have for years. If you put in my phone number, I come up name and all. I hadn't had my Brooklyn Bridge in a while thus my reason for today's takeout. I ordered extra meat (because of stagflation) and the meat didn't even cover all the bread compounded by no Mac sauce nor extra mayo as ordered on the ticket. In addition, there were no chips in the bag and the icing on the cake was the meals taxes which came in around 10%! So ridiculous!!!! Typical American bar food. The restaurant's decor is very unique. Lots of movie character statues and things. It's a big place, but if you're there in the winter, make sure to sit upstairs. My daughter goes to VT and loves Macados. When we were dropping her off, we wanted to grab food before heading home and she recommended we try. They have so many sandwich options, which was overwhelming, but great. They also have other food options, but we all went for sandwiches. We went on a weekday during lunch time, so it wasnt busy. We grabbed a table by the bar and were greeted and tended to efficiently. The set up was very casual with various things on the walls including pictures. Definitely gives local and college vibes, which we loved. We ordered the Macados club, Godfather and one other, which I can't recall. The sandwiches are large and very filling. I was able to take half home and finish for dinner. It comes with chips or you can pay extra and get fries. They tasted really good and fresh. We have definitely made Macados a regular spot. Came here for a late lunch after flying in from L.A. The decor and ambiance are really fun, quirky & nostalgic items all over the walls, ceiling. Very much had a TGIF restaurant vibe (if anyone remembers that chain). Service was horrible. Took us forever to get the menu and then more time to get our orders in. It's VT graduation week so you'd think restaurants would have more staff but since it was an off-hour, they only had 1 waitress for our area of the large restaurant. There were tons of menu items to choose from, mostly sandwiches. Everything tasted fine, nothing to rave about. My graduate said the service is always slow regardless of time or season. Macado's is probably better as a bar than as a full-service restaurant. But all the kitschy objects & items around the restaurant will keep kids enthralled & occupied during the long wait for food. Came here with my family on a Friday evening - there were people for sure, but it wasn't too crowded. Service-wise, I have absolutely no complaints. My server was great - orders went in quick; my mom's continuous requests to have her hot water mug filled up were done very promptly, and the food came quickly. However, the food was quite average, and probably below average. I got the Big City Jazz, which was a sandwich that had bacon, turkey, avocado, and some vegetables. I felt like the sandwich wasn't seasoned well, even though it had so much on it. The portions were about normal. Pricing was quite fair, however. From the outset, you might think that this is an old college dive bar that has been around forever and seen generations of Virginia Tech students. You would be right. I stopped by on a Thursday night to grab a quick dinner while in town for a job interview. The only reason I can't give this place 5/5 stars is because of the service: I stood for nearly 10 minutes at the hostess station waiting for someone to seat me. Multiple staff members walked by, clearly saw me, and didn't do anything to offer a table or even say "please hold on, we'll be right with you." I was finally able to get a seat at the bar and even there, I sat for a few minutes before the bartender offered me a menu or to get a drink. Besides this, the rest of the experience was positive. Macado's menu is massive! If you love sandwiches, this is the place for you. I ordered the Ziegfield's club, which included hot pastrami, corned beef, salami, swiss cheese, coleslaw, tomato, and Thousand Island dressing on three layers of rye bread. It was a warm, savory, juicy, delectable mess that I would order again instantly. I got the potato salad as my side which was filled with big chunks of potatoes and the perfect ratio of mayonnaise. Because it was a Thursday and they were doing a half price special, I got 20 boneless wings (half spicy Thai, half bang bang sauce). The flavors were so good and I liked all the extra blue cheese dressing they provided for dipping. I washed it all down with two pints from the local Three Notch'd Brewing Company. Macado's is a great place to take someone visiting Blacksburg. From the decor to the massive menu, there's truly nothing else like it in Blacksburg. The menu may be overwhelming to some, but it also means that there's something for everyone. They recently started offering gluten free buns which is exciting because a lot of their menu is served on bread or buns. While their kitchen does not have a devoted gluten free section, they were careful in making us aware of possible cross contamination. I chose to get the Gibson girl grilled cheese on gluten free bread. I was disappointed that the bread was not grilled, but I'm assuming that was to limit cross contamination so I appreciate it. The bread was more of a bun, so next time I am going to get a more hearty sandwich (or a burger) so the bread doesn't overpower the toppings. read more

This has been my go to Blacksburg destination since I'm a VT Hokie. The is place stands the test of time and never disappoints. The menu is extensive and you will struggle to decide what you want to eat. Have no fear, everything is good. This isn't a fancy place but a place you feel at home. However, it only applies to boneless chicken, and they are not very good. Honey BBQ is probably my favorite flavor but too much of it will get pretty sauce heavy. We also had to wait about an hour and a half for the wings but we were told before hand we were going to have to wait for about an hour so not a problem there. Macado's is one of the coolest spots I've been to in Blacksburg! The vibe of the whole restaurant was authentic. Service was phenomenal on a busy Friday night, and the food came out in reasonable time. The burger was okay, it had Mac and cheese and crushed potato chips for "crunch". The Mac and cheese was not very good and the chips were soggy and didn't add any crunch. The fries were also very mediocore. The spinach artichoke dip was pretty good though. If it was a tad hotter when we got it, it would've been much better but I understand that because it was busy, it may not have been as great. The totchos are a must try at Macado's! It's everything you love in nachos but with crispy and fluffy tater tots. The only downside to the appetizer was the overwhelming amount of nacho cheese. My girlfriend got the turkey and bacon sandwich and it was huge. I wish I could've gotten a picture! It tasted great too. She got the house made chips as well which are much better than the fries. They were crispy and salted very well. Macado's is known for its "over sliced" sandwiches and that what I should've gone with. You're going to go here - just the decor is reason enough. The food? Maybe. We ordered the black bean roasted corn con queso. No roasted corn to be seen. It seemed like black beans were mixed into a bowl of refried beans, then topped with cheese and baked. Thankfully there was a lot of cheese! Overall, there just wasn't any flavor to the dip. However, the chips were good - not greasy at all. Burgers are really good. They are definitely hand pressed and the bun is wonderful. My fries were limp. Greasy. They shouldn't have even been served to a customer, so that was disappointing. I decided not to eat them; the burger was more than enough. Service is slow. But, also seemed that our waiter was the bartender - so maybe just not enough staff working. I'd go back - it's entertaining and there are so many choices. read more

Three of us went for lunch on Sunday, arriving around 12:15. We had to wait about 15 minutes for a table, which was okay because it was crowded. Our waitress was very pleasant, but she did say she was the only one working the area where we were. She took our order and brought our drinks, and brought refills twice while we were waiting for our food. When we'd been waiting for our sandwiches for 50 minutes, my husband told her if we didn't have our food within 10 more minutes we were leaving. He also told her some people who had arrived after us had gotten their food. She apologized profusely, but indicated the kitchen staff doesn't want her reporting problems, including the manager who was working the line. When in Blacksburg....one MUST eat here! We do at least once on every visit. The sandwich menu is extensive and we have never been disappointed with anything on the menu! A must have is the Chips, Dips and Things appetizer. It has a generous portion of homemade chips, tortilla chips and two soft pretzels with their yummy French onion dip, salsa and beer cheese. My son, who lives here, and his fiancé are addicted to the boneless wings (so many wing sauce choices here!), which are reasonably priced. They also love the Titanic, which is a steak sandwich (shaved ribeye - NOT steak-ums!). The kid got a burger which was cooked medium well (it was a little over, but the server had warned us that sometimes their medium was "questionable" - that was the only disappointment) and fries. I got the Mona Lisa, which is basically an Italian sub with ham, salami, provolone and pepperoni. SO good and stuffed with thinly sliced ham. I am done with Macado's. Since COVID started, I ordered from them several times and they ALWAYS leave out something - sides or desserts. Even when I have gone to pick up items I have to ask for my complete order. Tonight two desserts and a bag of chips were left out. I asked the delivery driver to check before leaving the restaurant, but she wasn't given a receipt to check. When I called the restaurant, I was told I could pick up the missing items (I ordered delivery for a reason) or I could call the delivery company for a refund. No "sorry," no offers to help, discount, nothing. If it were not for naive cool kids or visitors, the place would shut down. Just avoid this place unless you have a few hours to wait for your meal or if you want to order and pay for dessert, but don't want the calories. read more

My friends told me I had to eat at Macado's and that it's a Bburg tradition. I'm really glad I gave it a try. I had a really good lunch there. The restaurant is really fun and has great energy. The menu is huge and it's hard to decide what to order. I had the Packer sandwich. Really high quality ingredients, especially the roast beef. I recommend the Macado's horseradish aioli with the sandwich. Also definitely recommend the tater tots--they are really addictive! Even my side salad was good and the dressing tasted homemade. It was a late lunch so we ordered around 2:30 p.m. We picked up the order 45 minutes later. It was ready, however, the hamburger buns were burnt and hard. The garlic bread for two orders were completely charred and burnt. The grilled chicken on my salad was completely dry and overcooked and one of the side salads which was ordered without croutons had croutons all mixed in it. It was disappointing to say the least as we all were hungry and we had a two hour drive home that afternoon. I would NOT recommend ordering take out as I am sure if you were in the restaurant you could have sent everything back and ask them to fix it. Came here after 20 years to have the French Onion Soup (classic). The place looks the same except the little store on the first floor got upgraded to something new. Many of the decorations appear to be the same. But the restaurant looks run down. Had the Lone Ranger with the French Onion Soup while my son had another classic sandwich. Soup wasn't the same taste and quality (disappointing). My sandwich was good. My son wasn't thrilled with his order. But I was able to renew my old college days. The wait staff customer service could use some improvement. There was not many people in the joint so I found it hard to believe my order would take so long. Also our waitress may have came to our table once and had to ask if I wanted a refill on my empty cup. University has many places to eat. If you are a past grad, you may want to relive your old Macado days with a visit. But for eats, consider some of the new places closer to campus. I was disappointed on my return visit. After a common time exam my friend and I wanted to try Macado's Monday wing deal! As we came in we were seated, but weren't given our menus. After about 5 minutes a waitress stopped by and handed us some menus so we can begin our order. I got 20 boneless wings and bacon and cheese tater tots. However, they said they can only do one flavor which I wasn't too overjoyed about. So I decided to play it safe and get hot barbecue sauce. The wings and tater tots came out relatively fast and I was ready to dive in. The wings were average, however since I was only able to get one flavor, I eventually got tired of the flavor. The tater tots were pretty good, and was a nice starch when combined with the wings. Overall, I probably wouldn't come back for the wings deal on Mondays at Macado's. We were seated in a section that had bright sunlight hitting us to the extent you couldnt see anything even tho other tables were available, no shades in there window (After around 20 mins we asked to move which they accommodate) I noticed right off the bat that the floors were dirty. Like old dirt not just that they hadn't swept. The food was nothing special. My fries were cold and thet eventually brought new ones.
