Years ago, there was a Mellow Mushroom in Murfreesboro, TN, my home town. It closed and is now a Mexican restaurant. When I went there, I liked the pizza and the Flower Children decor. The beer selection helped. Visiting Chattanooga for my grand-daughter's birthday, my son chose this for our lunch between visits to the aquarium. He tried to get in line for a table of eight on the phone, but he had to be there in person. He went. We waited a while for a table to open. It did and given the crowd it was not too long. When seated, our server apologized in advance for poor kitchen service. Actually with two toddlers, it was not than uncomfortable. Knowing the last tournament game would start at 7:40 I knew everyone would be starving and wanted to have a plan in place. Chelsea with Catering called me, discussed a variety of options. Three pre-order options are currently available, priced at $12pp, $17pp and $21pp before tax and 20% gratuity. While we didn't select one of these options, I've made a mental note for the future. We ended up with 26ppl arriving at 9:00pm. I introduced myself to our servers, Victoria and Mia. I chatted with Victoria on the best, most efficient ordering organization for our group to pay separately by family. This past Sunday, I stopped into Mellow Mushroom after viewing the Odyssey at the IMAX Theater. Immediately, I was greeted by a young woman who's personality shone like a ray of sunshine. She was so welcoming! Even though I was dining solo, she gave me the option of a table or booth. I chose the booth. The booth was clean and there were no crumbs on the seat nor offending smells. I was greeted by Nathan, my server. Nathan was very helpful in assisting me with my menu choices. My vegetarian pizza arrived in short order, hot and appetizing. While the pizza was very fresh tasting, I felt additional seasoning was required. Nathan produced a pesto that took the flavor over the top. Nathan was a great server; attentive but not overly so! Two sets of people were seated after us. Two different waiters came and took the other people's drink orders and then food orders and no one ever came by our table. I hate--HATE--leaving bad reviews. It generally feels unnecessarily ugly. But I feel obligated to review our experience given that we paid over $60 for 2 pizzas (1 ea small and medium + 2 cookies) that we couldn't eat from a pizza restaurant I've loved for almost 20 years. Anyway, this is what happened: We came to Chattanooga to celebrate our anniversary. I love Mellow Mushroom's flagship location in Peachtree City, GA, so when I saw the downtown Chattanooga location a block from our hotel, I asked if we could grab a couple pies, rent a movie and have a sofa picnic. My husband ordered/picked up a medium Mighty Meat and small Buffalo Chicken. Opening the boxes back in our room, we were both shocked as well as BEYOND disappointed. We ended up spending over $60 for pizza that proved to be inedible. The medium was a Mighty Meat, and it wasn't completely cooked. The dough in the middle almost done on the bottom but VERY raw topside. The cheese was warm but pulled apart in weird chunks because it hadn't completely melted in the middle. Worse, the small Buffalo Chicken--typically my favorite--was so greasy that it legit wasn't at all edible. The grease from the pie soaked through the bottom of the box in the short walk from the shop to our room, a block away. The single slice my husband put on my plate soaked through the heavy paper before I had decided to forgo the undercooked slice. It literally looked like they'd half-cooked the (added) bacon and then poured the pan grease all over the pizza. Frankly, it was just disgusting. I've never had an experience anywhere remotely close to this bad with any pizza place, but especially not with Mellow Mushroom. We didn't attempt to return the two pies because it was raining buckets, and frankly, I wasn't thrilled with the idea of a do-over. Our initial order was so bad that I didn't have faith another attempt would be any better. At all. It'll be a long time before I buy pizza from Mellow Mushroom again, if ever. This may have ruined me. In fairness and transparency, I do want to add this: the staff/service were fantastic. Everyone was kind and attentive which is not only notable but commendable give the fact the place was slammed. Lines were LONG. The customer service didn't suffer for it at all. We received our drinks in a timely matter. 20 min later our 4 yr old received her meal. 8 min later our 7 yr old received her meal. The food was amazing! We sat outside and honestly spent longer than we should have just watching everyone stopped to take pictures enjoying our vacation. The pizza is to die for I actually had salad and it was beautiful and so tasty everyone who works here loves working here and they're good at what they do. We had a pretty excellent experience here. We ordered online and they had it ready on time. They were able to do a great job on customizing our somewhat complicated order. The pizza is excellent. I really like their seasoned crust and softer dough. They have lots of good options for pizza as well. I do feel like some of their specialty pizzas get expensive for what they are. We paid $33 for a large which is very high. We also got very few mushrooms on one specialty. It tasted good but did not fit the price. I love Mellow Mushroom. I wish there were more of them to visit and enjoy. Their pizza menu is full of fun combos with really tasty ingredients. I tried the Merry Prankster on normal crust this time which had chicken, Italian sausage, roasted red peppers, green peppers, and an herb aioli and it was delightful. The combination of the flavors was great and it was super well balanced. I also had their Caesar salad on the side which was tasty. I asked for dressing on the side because they tend to put more than I'd like on my salad, but the ingredients in the salad taste great and their croutons are to die for. The servers were super kind and super helpful. Not only were they very friendly while serving us, but they helped give us recommendations and were really patient when we were mixing and matching toppings based on dietary restrictions and preferences. I have been hyping up Mellow Mushroom to my fiancé for years. When we were in Chattanooga for the weekend, I finally got the chance to introduce him. The wait time for a Saturday wasn't bad - 20 minutes, despite the host taking our name off the wait list twice. Both fans of cuban sandwiches, we ordered the Havana pizza. What we received did not look anything like the picture. The menu boasted 'jerk marinated pork, ham, salami, Swiss and mozzarella cheeses, diced pickles, and an irresistible mayo-mustard drizzle.' The pizza we were served had very little toppings. What we assumed was the pork, ham and salami was non-existent and certainly didn't match what should have been on a large $30+ pizza. The mustard (no mayonnaise) was overpowering and extremely off putting. We ended up getting beer cheese to dip the crust in as the pizza was 50% crust. We sat next to the bar at a high top to watch a college game. We ordered 2 rounds of drinks from the bar. Each drink took 20 minutes from ordering to it arriving at the table. We understand it was a Saturday evening but the bartender didn't have a lot of people sitting at the bar nor was anything aside from beer being served. Mellow Mushroom normally has delicious pizza with adequate toppings but I think it all depends on the location. This isn't one of them. read more

The food is decent, not the best pizza I've had. We had the pretzel bites, which I probably wouldn't order again or recommend. It's basically just pieces of pizza crust, fairly bland and nothing exciting. Their pizzas are decent size, but probably should be for $30. We had the "pacific rim", basically Hawaiian style pizza.
