The service at Mel's is great. The lady who helped us was very attentive and kind. My parents and everyone else I talked to about Mel's at 22 raved about how great the food was when they visited. I disagree. It's really quite average. We ordered the burrata Caprese salad. The burrata was awesome. There was only one slice of tomato though. Granted, it was a large slice of tomato. For the price, there should have been more than one slice of tomato. Ridiculous. The shrimp scampi was boring and flavorless. The filet mignon was average. The best thing we had at Mel's? The bread and butter. If you have boring tastebuds and like paying a lot, I highly recommend. read more

Rounding out my couple of days in upstate NY with another 5 Star review in Cooperstown NY. Yes, I'm surprised 3 meals would bring all these kind of review, but they are all well deserved. Super close to the Baseball HOF, with a nice airy vibe. Very friendly waitress as well. I had the BLT with a delicious aioli on a ciabatta roll with French fries which was delicious! Totally amazing. Wonderful attentive friendly service with great food. The atmosphere is upscale vintage which makes it very romantic and personal. The lunch selection has great options. The clam chowder was packed with flavor and just right. The burger was made rare like I wanted. I hate when they cook it more than what I ask. The fries were nice and crispy. The crab cake Caesar salad was huge with a smaller crab cake than I'd like but very delicious. Next time I'd order just crab cakes alone because it was so good. This place accommodated our group of 10 just fine and there's wrap around seating along the wall for larger parties. The bar is very nice for solo eaters as well. Definitely makes you feel like your eating somewhere in the village of Manhattan versus a town. Highly recommended! read more

We went after a trip to the baseball hall of fame. I read great reviews from Yelp and it didn't disappoint. There wasn't a lot of people there. Our sever was nice and recommended the pulled pork tacos!! And I got tater tots for a side which unexpectedly where really good!! My daughter and her fiancé really enjoyed their meals too. It's kind of the only game in town. Okay, that was a bad pun, and sort of a bad intro. However, it is, really, the only upscale restaurant in Cooperstown, which makes it a stand out, and a bit busy at a guess. The menu has a good selection of standard hits, though nothing that will scream unique to the town. With that, the food is good, the desserts though, are very very good. Service is a bit slow, we were seated on the patio at the end (by our request) and that may have played part. But, the patio is a great place to look down main street and see the crowds as they wander by. They have unique cocktail menu which is a fun way to cap dinner. With limited options around, they're the top end of places to eat, but deliver on quality and atomosphere. read more

As a break during our visit to Cooperstown, Mel's was a godsend just a couple of blocks down from the Baseball Hall of Fame. There was just so much I could take of the rugrats running around screaming at the museum and this was a quiet, more mature place I can enjoy my lunch. There were still families here, but their children were much better behaved and I'm sure the rowdier ones were at the pizza place down the street. Starting with New England Clam Chowder was a good bet, though it was a little low in the clam department. My wife had the Lobster Roll which was more of a seafood salad, but still had a good amount of lobster. The pesto garlic fries (extra $2) that she ordered as her side were fantastic though. I ordered the Fried Haddock Sandwich, a large hunk of fish perfectly batter-dipped and crispy fried to perfection, along with a side of tater tots. I wasn't too thrilled with the taters because they were the bottle cap type, not the beer keg shaped ones and came out too crispy hard. So I snuck some more pesto fries from my wife's plate and scooched some tots over onto hers. Service was inconsistent because I had to ask our server for a lot of little things that other tables were getting automatically like tartar sauce for the fish sandwich and ketchup for the tots. Our water glasses were kept full though. I'll be sure to come back next time to try them for dinner. read more

We arrived, a party of 6, at 1:30. They were slammed so we sat outside. The sun started going down & people emptied out inside so we moved to a table in the dining area. We ordered outside and it took an HOUR for our food to arrive--4 burgers and two skillet scrambles. An HOUR with no explanation. The food was good but they were out of hash browns (keep in mind we ordered from the brunch menu) so we got tater tots which were just frozen tots. The scrambles looked great. The burgers were good. To me it looked like the bacon was undercooked so I gave it to someone else in my party. I would say it's an average place with decent food in a town with not much selection. read more

In Cooperstown for Baseball Hall of Fame Inductions. Knew that all places would be packed and just jumped to the end of a short line. WHAT A GREAT MOVE! After waiting for about 15 minutes (not bad at all considering the weekend) was seated. Server was prompt with taking drink orders and getting glasses of water. Checked the menu and settled on our orders. I ordered the Turkey Bacon wrap and my son got the California Burger. Both were served with fresh cut fries. Both were plated delightfully and temperature was perfect. My son said it was the best burger he had in years! Loved the bun which seemed homemade. The burger was cooked exactly how he ordered and juicy for each bite. My wrap was loaded with turkey and thick bacon slices. I have had wraps in many locations and this one is in the top three, for me! We were not rushed, and given that it was Hall of Fame Induction weekend, it was a pleasant surprise! Both my son and I said we need to return to really spend time at the Hall of Fame and both said we should convince my wife/his mom to join us on the trip, just to eat here!! My family and I went to Mel's when we were in town for a wedding this week. I was surprised for how crowded it was on a Tuesday night after Christmas, but I would take that as aa testament to how well loved Mel's is! We ordered an appetizer off the specials menu- eggplant fries. They were DELICIOUS. They were covered in Mozzarella cheese and balsamic vinaigrette. There was also a side of sauce for dipping. If these are on the menu when you come, I would highly recommend them. I personally ordered the spaghetti, meatballs, and sausage for dinner (which was also a special). It was pretty good. The meatball was delicious and the sausage was flavorful. I also enjoyed the sauce (although I wish the dish came with a bit more cheese). Mel's was crowded and loud. Be prepared. That being said the food was excellent and the 5 Mile Manhattan tasty. They accommodated all requests for food prep. The Maitre'd and the servers were incredibly busy but still managed to be very friendly, informative and extremely competent. Stopped here for dinner. The place was buzzing with customers and the bar was full. We were seated in the front bar area as the dining room was full. The fried calamari was flavorful,garnished with hot peppers and olives. I loved the garnish but family wished there was less of that and more calamari. Dinners: Fish-fry-yum; Caesar salad with chicken- full of flavor, perfect amount of dressing, chicken tender; scallops (appetizer)- tender,juicy, nice flavor on top. Dessert: holy cow!!! Wow this restaurant was packed. Get a reservation. I actually preferred Hawkeye instead for dinner because that place was much more low key. Mel's does have a wide variety of items on the menu. When I was there I ordered the stuffed avocados with quinoa. It was served with roasted corns and beans. This paritucarly healthy meal was good but not amazing. The unhealthy tater tots (i mean generally they's just potatoes) were better! You can't beat the tots. I also appreciated that local brews were on tap. We were looking for a place to have dinner and my wife was insistent it be outdoors. Called Mel's and they were able to accommodate our party of three. We started off with drinks and appetizers. My wife and mother-in-law each had wine that they both enjoyed. I had a Margarita that came in an Old Fashioned style glass. Initially it made the Margarita seem to be small, it was tasty so I quickly got over that. They shared the calamari and both enjoyed it, I tasted it and for my taste it could have been crispier though I enjoyed the peppers that garnished the calamari. Now this whole review could be about the New England Clam Chowder I ordered it was that good, very possibly the best I've ever had. For dinner my wife had salmon and my mother-in-law had Mahi-Mahi which was a special. Again both loved their selections. I made my choice off the menu until I saw the cheeseburgers delivered to two nearby dinners. A rare cheddar burger with caramelized onions with fries quickly became my selection. And the right one it was! We didn't do desert and coffee, all were pretty satisfied. We visit a lake near Cooperstown every July and usually dine at a restaurant on Main Street but they didn't offer outside dining so we had to change our usuals...glad we did! read more

I was so disappointed with the quality of my burger today! I stopped in for a take out lunch- of course excited to try this place out. When I walked in the staff was friendly and accommodating- no complaints in this department! Anyhow- I grabbed my food - got in my car and started driving towards Cherry Valley- I tasted my fries- they were delicious- then I go for the burger and realize that its burnt! When I asked for medium-well , I didn't realize that meant burnt to a "crunch" on the outside. It is now 8 pm and my burger is still uneaten- I wasted $10 and now I must waste food.... my dog wouldn't even eat it! If I had time I would have called the restaurant got back in my car- drove 20 minutes there and back all over again and returned/ swapped my burger- however I do not feel that I should have to waste my time as well. Please hold your CHEFS accountable- this is unacceptable! read more

Went here because it seemed to be the only place that had vegan options in the area and it did not disappoint. I'm not vegan but my partner is. He got the zucchini cakes and Impossible sausage and OMG it was so good. I got the black bean burger with avocado, gouda and caramelized onions which was great too. This is such a wonderful place to dine at. As locals in the area, we like to come here often. The food is really good and the service impeccable. The owner makes the rounds to say hello occasionally. The place is a bit small so make sure to get reservations a few days ahead to guarantee seating. In the summers, there is outdoor seating in front of the restaurant. OMG! This restaurant is fabulous for dietary restrictions. The server was helpful about substitutions. I got a entree salad with fresh greens and frisee, beets, goat cheese, sunflower seeds, garbanzos, cuke slices, chopped fennel, peppadew, and added pan seared tofu. The refreshing dressing was a lemony lite vinagrette. Amazing! So good I may repeat tomorrow.My partner had the pasta and scallops served with a beautiful Cesar side salad (no dietary restrictions!). We ordered fish and chips (basic) and a side Caesar salad with a cup of NE Clam Chowder, two Moscow mules (without much ginger beer or vodka) and coffee and a piece of pre-made /mediocre chocolate cake. $73. The server was very attentive, but the food was sub par. They need to serve spreadable butter with their stale bread. Ours was rock hard from the refrigerator. Have had Mel's bookmarked for months and finally had a chance to come in and check the place out. I called on Saturday night around 630 to see how long the wait would be for a table for two and they told me they couldn't seat us until 815, which worked out well for us as we were in Oneonta at the time. We got to Mel's around 815 and the wait for a table was only 10 minutes or so, which was great. We prefer to sit at the bar, however, so we kind of hovered in the corner of the bar, ordered a round of drinks and waited for two bar stools to open. I thought the bar was cool! They had a very large eye catching picture of a cow behind the bar with purple lights around the perimeter. Fairly small bar though, thinking it could only accommodate 11 people or so. I thought the entryway was a lot of wasted space, unless they needed that area for people waiting for a table. They had some high top tables and an area with a ledge that I thought would be perfect to add chairs at and make additional seating. I didn't get to check out the dining room, it was separate from the entryway and bar area but it sounded busy. The menu sounded amazing, it was difficult to choose what to eat. They had lots of great appetizers, burgers and entrees. They also had a few specials to choose from, which made my decision even more difficult. Their wine list wasn't memorable but I was drinking prosecco and my boyfriend had Rose. Our bartender was friendly enough but took our appetizer and entree order separate and our entrees took forever. We started with shrimp cocktail and ahi tuna for appetizers. Shrimp cocktail was $11 for 4 shrimp, they came and went quickly and the tuna was tasty and $12, which I thought was more than reasonable for the portion. For entrees, I ordered the salmon and my boyfriend got the ribeye. We both enjoyed our food. The bartender forgot to ring in our fries we ordered, but they weren't on the bill so we didn't care. For two appetizer, two glasses of prosecco, one glass of Rose, salmon entree and ribeye our bill came to $100. I gotta be honest, we left hungry and got pizza on the way home. The portions weren't huge. Maybe the fries would have been the cherry on top. $100 was reasonable for that, however. I would definitely come back and try something else on the menu, their lunch selections looked good! read more

I come to Cooperstown at least once a year for 20 years from Long Island. For the past several years, this has been my favorite restaurant in town. When I came here about 5 years ago, the person I was with commented on her meal saying that they 'were the best scallops she's ever had.' Tonight I had my favorite double dirty martini which had olive juice and Tabasco. I couldn't decide on appetizers, so I ordered their Fried brussels sprouts and hot Nashville fried cauliflower. I figured I can take leftovers back to my hotel. Both had incredible flavor and were cooked perfectly. The fried brussels sprouts had a great combination of flavors just as described on the menu. For an entrée, I got the pesto shrimp ravioli. Nice pesto cream sauce with Barata stuffed ravioli. The pesto was not overpowering and the ravioli were tender. The service was terrific too! Rebecca was very attentive! This is not only one of my favorite restaurants in Cooperstown, but one of my favorite restaurants. Go there. Oh, and the Baseball Hall of Fame is here too. read more
