I am a huge home/garden center enthusiast and just found a Menards location in Monona, WI that packages up its ripped mulch bags, sand bags, and bagged rocks and sells those ripped up bags at about half the cost! They were not available in all colors, but I scored two bags of this lovely brown mulch for just $1.50 a bag and also two bags of stones for just $2.00 a piece, rather than $3.66. I know that is not a huge saving, but with the 11% back, it makes for a nice little treat. I have a thing for mulch, soil, compost and rocks. When I am having a tough day, I wander through my local Menards and find things to add to my garden. This particular location, located near Madison, WI is almost entirely indoors or at least covered outdoor sections- which is helpful on a hot, rainy day like yesterday. It had sales in so many end-caps, too, like random things marked down considerably although I couldn't always tell what the item was. This location is very clean and well organized. Super well stocked in all the departments that I visited. I will come back next time I am up in Madison. read more

I am done with Menards. Went in yesterday to buy some tools and a 46-1/4" piece of 1x4 lumber. No sales help but I saw two associates chatting down the aisle. When I found the 48" piece of precut lumber of choice, I took it to them to see if one of them could cut it for me. They said, "No, you have to cut it yourself." I asked, "Where is the saw?" They replied, "Outside." Me, "Where?" He, "In the building back in the yard, across the bridge, and to the end of the lot." Me, "I was going to buy a bunch of stuff but I think I'll go to Home Depot where there's service." Went to buy several Christmas trees and when we Asked for help, we were told, "Nope." Management told employees not to help us. (Per the employee himself) We were treated incredibly rude and I assure you, there is no exaggeration here. We were told we could take as many carts as we want. After loading everything on the carts, we were told we can't do that and can only use one cart. We were told one thing, after doing the work to do said thing, we were then told that we can't do said thing. This happened over and over and over. We were made to cart our trees through the isles while trying not to knock things over in the isles. BOBBY WAS THE ONLY NICE EMPLOYEE MENARDS HAD THERE!! Shame on you Menards. I should have heeded the Yelp star rating when heading to this Menards, but it was right next door to my former storage unit so I thought I'd just pop in real quick to put together an easy DIY project - giant Jenga. I am not inclined to the sorts of projects one would need to visit a Menards for, so after spending some time wandering their giant, giant store I saw a counter that did custom jobs and inquired where I could find 2x4s and how many I would need to get the number of blocks I desired. The older gentleman sitting at the computer was unhelpful, but a younger woman who was behind him walked over to help. She was the one bright spot in my soon to be hellish trip (and worthy of her very own star in the rating). The woman helped me calculate out how many pieces of wood I'd need, and drew a little diagram with the cut measurements. I opted to have Menards cut my wood for me - I don't own a saw and while it's a little steep ($1/cut), I figured in the end it would be cheaper and easier than me renting a power tool and measuring everything myself. I was probably wrong about the latter part. After helping me out, the woman referred me back to the man at the computer to place the order. He told me to take my printout up to pay, then to go out back to the lumberyard. I was to let the gate guard know I needed wood cut, and they'd radio ahead to have someone meet me with a forklift and they'd grab the wood and cut it. Sounded easy enough. While paying for my order, the woman who had initially helped me came sprinting up - she realized she'd made a mistake on the math and I'd need one more 2x4. She ran over to customer service, printed out a new invoice, and had me on my way. This is where the good part of the trip stopped. After paying, I drove around to the lumber yard. I let the guard know I needed cuts. He radioed it in. After some searching I was finally able to find the correct barn to pull into. I pulled up next to the stall number that had the 2x4s and waited. And waited. And waited. After 30 minutes of no one showing up and no workers in sight, I called the store. And waited. And then got an automated message saying no one was able to take my call and then got hung up on. Awesome. I got out of my car, and was finally able to track down an employee. I explained that I'd been waiting for 40 minutes and no one had helped us. "Well, you should have picked out your wood then driven it over to the saw. I got the message telling me someone needed cuts, but I thought that was for someone else." I explained I was told he would meet me with a forklift and that he would bring the wood to the saw. He told me that's not how it works. After finally getting the wood to the saw, I showed him the diagram and he had no idea what to do. I explained it, and he went about cutting everything. With a presumably dull blade that chewed up the wood. While complaining. The whole time. I came to find out he was literally the only person working in the entire lumber yard, which is insane for many reasons - the most disturbing being that if he got hurt, no one would have any idea. From a consumer standpoint, there is no way one person can adequately staff such a big area. While the guy cut our wood, another truck pulled up to ask if his order was ready. The same older man who had been initially unhelpful had told them he would call in their order and have it ready by the time they were done shopping. Again, this is apparently not how it works. The other customers had already spent an hour putzing around waiting, and were not pleased that they had to wait for my order for theirs to even get started. Totally fair, considering I needed 40+ cuts. Another Menards employee eventually showed up zipping around on a cart, and talked to both of us customers after the complaining cutter told him that everything was being done wrong and he literally can't do his job. Zippy guy went to track down the old man inside, but didn't do a whole lot to help the situation in the lumber yard (and again, left the saw man alone in a giant yard with no help). After nearly two hours since I had set foot in the door, the order was ready, albeit shoddily since the ends were all chewed to bits. Glad I grabbed a big old stack of sandpaper, as I don't think I would have been willing to return for more. read more

If you're not from the midwest, you might not be familiar with Menards. Picture a Lowes or Home Depot, but stuck in the 1980s. But they have candy. And groceries. And beef jerky. And a small selection of clothes. And fake deer antlers to hang on your wall. I NEVER go to Home Depot or Lowes. Menards selection is better, prices are better, and employees are more helpful. I used to go to Home Depot because they would price match their competitors and beat them by 10%, so I would go in armed with Menards prices, but eventually I determined that was more trouble than it was worth. The only reason to go to Home Depot over Menards (other than if they have an item in stock Menards doesnt) is Home Depot will cut lumber for you free of charge. Menards doesnt cut anything. Downsides to Menards? Well, John Menard is a crazy evil billionaire and huge campaign donor to politicians I dont like. Instead of gift cards and store credit they give you these flimsy pieces of paper designed, I am sure, so you will lose or destroy them and they can keep the money. And the lumber quality is inconsistent so you have to inspect carefully. I am a loyal Menards shopper and when I have lived elsewhere in the country, HATED not being able to go there. read more

When I arrived at the store I could not see a sign indicating where the online purchase pick up service, I drove around in circles 2x from one end to the other end of building till a saw a small arrow sign pointing inside the store. I'm like what the heck.! I have to go inside the store walk all the way back to the store? I love Menards, but hate going here because the customer service is horrible. I don't say this lightly because I have worked in customer service for years, so I think I am pretty lenient. I was building custom shelves out of piping, and it took me 25 minutes to just find an employee. Once I found him, he was extremely rude, told me I shouldn't bother with the shelves, and went on his way (maybe because I'm a blonde woman?). After wandering around the store for over an hour, trying to find everything I needed, I ended up buying what I could find and going to a different store. I understand that customer service is not everyone's cup of tea, but it's not like I was asking him to build the shelves for me. Just a point in the right direction, or verification that they didn't have any more piping in the back or in another area would have made all the difference. P.S. my shelves turned out amazing!! The customer service at Menards is horrible, especially if you need to return a defective "special order" product. I was treated with complete disrespect from the very beginning at the Returns counter. The guy wouldn't even speak to me. I was given very inconsistent and erroneous information, directed all over the store to various personnel and made to feel very uncomfortable and unwelcome, in spite of spending many, many thousands of dollars there for well over 25 years. And I only wanted a replacement, not a refund. That staff are very callous and indifferent, lacking basic interpersonal skills or any genuine desire to actually assist you."Special Order" return policies are onerous and blatantly unfair to the customer. Return policies vary from store to store, making no sense at all. I was told I had to go to the location where the "special order" was placed to make a return, then told differently as I worked my way up through management. I will now shop elsewhere for my needs. I'm so surprised by the poor ratings, granted I've never had to wait in special customer service lines or custom orders. If possible, do it yourself. I come here often for projects, supplies, tools, hone improvement, car fluids. On my most recent trip, staff were able to find very specific and random items for me - silver colored hasps, carabeners, specific saw, fasteners, staplegun, grass seed, 1x3s. They don't hesitate to run all over. I love Menards' rebates; sometimes this pays for an item or two on the next visit. For my needs, Menards is superior to Home Depot because Home Depot is exactly that...for your home only. Menards is the whole shebang. I want 10 choices of motor oil, not 1. It's so convenient to also pick up toilet paper, Tupperware, Christmas decorations, and birdseed. Prices are great. The only downside is that due to the layout and size of the store, you really have to commit time to this errand. read more

I had an online order to pick up during the Covid safer at home time. I went to the pick up area and waited over 20 min and finally had to walk in the store to get an employee to help me. He reluctantly and slowly helped. I asked him to carry the package to my car. His mask was around his neck but not covering his nose or mouth. I told e I was not comfortable with this and asked him to wear his mask properly...he did not. I am a health care worker who had Covid and I DON'T want it again! I ordered a custom front door for my home from Menards in Monona Saturday July 28th and they said it would be about a week for it to be made and delivered. I went to pick it up over a week late and they said it was on the truck it'll be a couple more days. That's fine, wasn't tripping. When it arrived I picked it up brought it home and it was all scuffed up out of the box. The frame around the glass was lifted at the corner it was in bad shape. I had to reorder. Before I did I took pictures of the entire door including the damages. They tried to charge me a Restocking Fee. I refused to pay that and she had to call someone in the store to get approval to wave it. They processed the reorder and said they will let us know when it's ready. I went to get it today..... Tell me why it's the exact same damage in the exact same spots! Did these people just rewrapped the same door? At this point i need to see a manager. This is the 3rd time now I had to order the same door! The manager wasn't in. The employees I spoke to said I should get at least half off if not a free door. Reordered 3 times damaged out the box and they offered me a $20 gift card. The GM who will remain nameless for now, kept blaming the manufacturer and saying it wasn't Menards fault. Forgive me but are you selling this product? Do you stand behind this product? Are you trying to say the company you deal with sells a inferior product so you can shift the blame? I paid Menards and after I was treated like this I'm gonna need compensation, 1 for the fee I had to pay the contractor to go get the door twice to help me install, and the cost of making my wife wait on this as she was disappointed too. Okay, if you would have asked me what I thought of Menards when I was like 10 years old, I would have said "I fucking hate that place". I didn't swear when I was 10, but I probably would have if you asked me that. My parents did nothing but drag my sister and I to car lots, boat lots, and Menards on the weekends. I remember so many long Saturdays of going to look at boats, and sitting in the car with my sister for an hour trying not to beat the shit out of each other, and then going to Menards and being dragged around the store for like EVER. With the closure of Ace Hardware on Cottage Grove Road, I decided to revisit Menards in Monona. I have been pleasantly surprised at the knowledge and accessibility of the staff. While there are fewer deeply informed home improvement geeks than Ace's former savvy staff, the people at Menards have happily helped me find someone who knows the answer to a question when they don't. Home Depot has great signage, good store layouts, and some high-end products, but I've been unable to find people there with the same level of knowledge as the staff at Menards. read more

I've been in a Menards a LOT ever since I was a young kid following my Dad around on the weekends. However, this review is mostly based off of a shopping experience that I undertook there. I was in the market for a couch and shopped around at a lot of places, wasn't looking for anything too fancy or expensive. Someone gave me a tip that Menards was selling a decent one for $250 so I went in to check it out (this was their East Towne location). After giving it a day of thought I decided to pull the trigger. I called the east side and they said they only had the floor model left (they were priced to sell). I asked if their other two locations had some in stock, and they said the west side did, so I called the west side and had one put on hold so I could buy it that evening. Get to the west side and they have the loveseat, not the couch. ARGGG, I thought these things were organized by SKU, you messed up on the store computer on that one, East Side. The Monona location still has one left though! It's the floor model, but now it's $200 (after $50 rebate). OK, fine. I go to the Monona location and ask if I can buy it now and pick it up in a few days when I can borrow my dad's trailer and haul it to my apartment. They say "No" we don't do prepay anymore. Darn. I ask if I can put it on hold and my dad can alter his schedule so that he can pick it up tomorrow morning (this was a deal on a couch that I didn't want to let get away). The sales associate calls his manager and they make a big exception for me. That I'm happy with, and I commend them for being flexible. However, I go to put it on hold, and they say that I need to pay for it now when I put it on hold. What??? So you first say that Menards doesn't do prepay (pay now, pick up later), but when I put something on hold to buy and pick up later, I have to pay now? What's the difference??? Anyway, I'm happy that I found such a deal, and I'm happy that they were willing to make a small exception to their rules, but Menards you really need to get your stuff together. read more

Menards really needs to up their game when it comes to accessibility for their customers. I am chronically ill and with Covid and difficulty getting around due to illness, ordering online and picking up curbside has been a lifesaver for me. Menards makes it really difficult to do curbside orders from the get-go - often charging extra - I get when small, local businesses have to charge for these services, but Menards is a large chain, there's no reason for them to not be accessible to customers who need accommodations. This particular Menards has terribly marked pick-up areas and is frequently understaffed in that area. I waited 30 minutes for someone to help me with my pick-up order today. The employee told me it was because she was the only person working back there, and she was clearly frazzled and stressed. As I was leaving, I got confused about whether I needed to stop on my way out (there were no visible employees at the booth, no stop sign or barricade of any sort), so I thought I must not need to stop. As soon as the employee came running out I realized my mistake and stopped, but they were incredibly rude to me about it. I said sorry, it was an honest mistake, and I was exhausted from what should been a 15 minute errand taking 45 minutes. There was no reason for the employee to treat me the way they did. From now on, I will gladly pay more for things from Home Depot whenever possible, because they have made huge efforts to keep ordering and pick-up easy and safe for their customers. read more

I had never been to a Menards prior to buying a home, and now I am LITERALLY there every weekend. Our house was a fixer upper so we literally started from scratch, and we got pretty much all the materials from Menards for our house. Everything from our bathroom, our cabinets, and even flooring came from this store, and our house looks pretty dang kick ass now. So the materials I have no problem with, but as many people have mentioned, the service is less than desirable. And I don't think it's necessarily the fault of the employees, because its hard to price some of the materials that come through their aisles like scraps of wood. Its just not set up to be user friendly. As well, be prepared to wait. It normally takes 10 min to get through the line on a good day. Great place to buy all the little things that come with owning a home, but just needs a better system that works for both cashiers and customers. read more

I hate that each Menards is laid out differently; it's really dumb. It's totally true that the employees usually don't know a thing about the parts or items sold. Often if you ask the wrong guy they will say something like 'I've never heard of that' and that's basically the final answer. Don't bother asking is my general rule. However, you need to remember the clerk is probably being paid minimum wage or only a buck or two better. The clerk does not claim to be a plumber, electrician, or carpenter so don't expect them to know the things a plumber, electrician or carpenter would. You came hear because it's a little cheaper than Home Depot where the guys/gals in each department actually seem to know a little about their zone. Being rude to the poorly paid cashier does not help anybody. I hate that they always have to ask 'will this be in a Menards card today?' Three stars because it's cheap, delivery service is good and can usually be next day, and the stores are well disbursed around town. The sign at the checkout says leave the cart here and the cashier will unload it. One time I had some old faucet parts in the cart, and the cashier didn't pass them onto the belt. As soon as I realized they were missing I went back to get them within 20 minutes. But they had already disposed them in a trash compactor. I've generally had good experiences at Menards. However, this was the first time I'd tried to buy anything from the lumber yard. I was in need of some siding and trim boards for a porch project, so I went to the building materials desk. I brought two sample pieces of the material I was looking for, and nobody at the desk was able to tell me if they had anything similar to what I was looking for or not. I looked at their display of siding, which was about 30 feet away and 10 feet in the air and guessed at what I needed. They couldn't help me find the trim board I needed. I bought the 4 boards I needed, got my picking slip, paid for my stuff and went to the lumber yard. I must have spent an hour and 15 minutes looking for my siding. Nobody in the lumber yard had any idea where the bin was that contained my materials. While searching for the correct bin, I stumbled across the trim board I needed! I grabbed what I needed and threw it into the truck. I made sure to take a photo of the SKU (which is also the bin number so I could pay for it. Eventually I found the siding I was looking for in a bin without a marking or label. I loaded it up too, and headed for the gate. The gate attendant was nice, and told me that I needed to go inside to pay for the extra board that wasn't on my picking list - no problem there, I figured that would happen. I went inside and got in line to pay. Once I got to the cashier, I told her that I had an extra board, showed her the picture of the SKU and barcode, and said I'd like to pay for the board I took from the lumber yard. She proceeded to look at me like I had a third eye in the middle of my forehead, and then said simply "I can't do it that way." She then proceeded to find a supervisor like she was a crossing guard and I was being turned in to the principal for disobeying her. I was less than politely informed that I needed to go all the way to the back to the building materials desk again and get a picking slip (even though I was not going back out to the lumber yard). I was already frustrated and tired from tromping around the lumber yard and just wanted to pay for my piece of lumber so I went back and got another picking slip. The kicker: when I got the picking slip, it had THE EXACT SAME SKU AND BARCODE AS THE PHOTO I TOOK. I don't think I'll be going back to this Menards. Or maybe any others for a little while. read more

Awful, simply awful. My Wife and I went in to pick and buy a new Sliding door for our patio. The list price was $1,200. When the clerk put the order in, the price showed $1,700, due to our "Special" order. The problem is we ordered the EXACT door they had on their showroom floor. He couldn't explain why the $500 increase. After 45 minutes, I gave up and ordered it. The door was to be in on May 15th. This day came and left, no call, or notification. I had borrowed a trailer to pick it up on the 16th, so I called on the 16th. "Sorry, it won't be in until the 22nd" On the 22nd, I called, asking when I can pick it up, "sorry, it won't be in until the 25th" Again, no notification, no call, no email. I have a person hired to help me install this door, but keep having to push him back, last minute due to Menard's awful communication and service. Oh, about the original price? I emailed the store the day I made the purchase, asking to see a detailed receipt of my purchase so I could understand the $500 increase. Guess what? after two attempts to talk with someone, no response. NEVER order from Menard's. It's fine if you're just going in to buy something off the showroom floor, but I would suggest to not to depend on this company for anything more. read more

I have been told the service at menards is better than home depot. I beg to differ, I have always went to home depot for supplies and if they have damaged boards they are pretty good with providing a reasonable deduction in price. This does not appear to be the case for menards. I had a shelving board that was damaged but half of it was good. It was the last one they had. It was not expensive (maybe $13) so I figured as I have always done with home depot they would reduce the price in accordance with the damage. The head of hardware department told me he would deduct $1 for the damage. I asked if they cut boards and if so could they sell me half and he rudely replied, "if you do not like it, then you can put it back." I would have, had there been another board. I get it if that is the lowest he could go. But the response could have been different. I bought the board anyhow as I still needed it but I was more upset over the treatment and not the lame discount. I will never go there again! read more

We just bought a $200 fire pit The box wouldn't fit in the car. So we unboxed it and returning the cart asked if they could get rid of the box ... he said no, I had to take the box "in case I wanted to return it"... I said i wasn't going to and it wouldn't fit and his response "YOU HAVE TO BREAK IT DOWN AND TAKE IT WITH YOU. THAT FOAM HAS TO BE RECYCLED." When I asked don't they recycle their cardboard and foam he said "WE ONLY RECYCLE OUR OWN, NOT CUSTOMERS". It's not like I'm bringing my recycles from home to the store! Only the stuff I had just BOUGHT FRIM THIS STORE!!! HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. Menards - My "PURCHASE" - Building Supplies Near Me - Monona, Wisconsin

Wow...the stupidity in this place amazes me. I buy an item and ask about their price match policy. The cashier had no clue so she called over the supervisor. The supervisor said that they don't match prices. Their website has an entire page dedicated to their price match policy. I had to call and talk to the manager. The manager apologized, oh boy that's helped, and transferred me to customer service to the price match done over the phone. Guess what, they can't do that. I had to bring in PROOF, and they made it very clear that it had to be a store in the area and the item had to be identical. Duh, of course..they just made a huge point about it, sounding like they didn't want to price match at all. Well, I got my $5 back, but they lost a customer. Avoid this location if at all possible. The employees here are useless. I run a service van and Menards is usually a good place to stop for many items. But the problem here isn't the merchandise; it's the employees. I have never come across a retailer that operates so poorly at all levels. Everytime I come here and need assistance, whether it be finding an item or getting help with a card on file, it it's followed with tons of hassle. NOT WORTH IT.
