The classic barber shop invokes memories of simpler times. With all the super cuts, great clips, and other chain barbers around there aren't a lot of traditional barber shops left. Not too long ago I decided I wanted to get a professional shave done, I've never done that before and as hard as I try at home it's almost impossible to get a perfect shave. In doing a quick yelping of barbershops in the area this was the closest place to me to offer such a service so I decided to stop by and give it a try. I arrived just before they opened and was let in and given a seat. Now when most people think of a shave from a barber they have the expectation of a straight razor. Well here they use a triple blade standard issue disposable razor due to concerns of transmitting HIV or other blood transmittable diseases(and this probably lowers their insurance rates a bit). The first thing they do is lather you up, then apply a hot towel to moisten up your face before doing an extremely thorough job. I seriously haven't had such a close shave ever, my face felt like I was an adolescent again. The barber was extremely friendly, talkative and did an outstanding job. This was my first barber experience and I walked out looking sharper than the standard "wait 2 weeks for your hair to look normal" haircut I typically get at the quick hair cut spots. The experience was different to me, but preferred. I wasn't used to chatting while my hair was cut, but Marcus is friendly and knowledgeable about more than how to not cut your ears. Overall, my hair tends to look about the same no matter who cuts it, and I'm really just looking for a comfortable 20 (max) minutes in the chair. The barbers at Esquire M.E.N.S. barber shop were extremely nice guys. The shop itself had a nice clubby atmosphere - the name of the place even features the type of acronym you'd find on a seven-year-olds' tree fort. I had seen this place reviewed a while back and wanted to stop by one time. Well my electric shaver died out and this was that time. These guys are awesome to bs with. I came out with my chrome dome waxed up and shining like Mr. Clean, I don't think they could have done a better job. Only reason for the loss of a star was that he used a regular 3 blade and not the straight razor and it was 19 bucks for the shave. I know that's just slightly over average but for someone who shaves his head *everyday* it was a bit much. I'll go back when I'm to lazy to do it myself without a doubt, but I can't afford that luxury too often. Did I mention these guys are awesome? A few months ago I tried this place to straight shave my beard and the environment was great. With that being said the prices were pretty high - from a guy that usually pays $15 for a hair cut. I had two small cuts from the shave that could be from my face but the guy did tell me how he was tired before putting a sharp object to my neck - not what I want to hear before getting a blade to my neck. I found this spot 3-4 years ago when I worked in Carol Stream and lived in Schiller Park. I needed to find a barber, and boy did I ever find one. I am so glad I stumbled across this barber shop as Marcus and company (Joe and Pete at the time) really know men's haircuts and make you feel right at home. These guys are true gentlemen that have experience well beyond your average barber. I recently moved to Algonquin and I have been settling for the supercuts and greatclips....it drove me nuts! I then found a barber in Algonquin that did a decent job but never wow'ed me. I finally told myself that I will go back to Marcus in Lombard (which is 45mins away from Algonquin) and see if it would be worth the drive. Let me tell you, it was WELL worth the drive and I plan on going out of my way to these guys every time I am due for a haircut! And for the people complaining about the price in the reviews truly must not understand how talented and good these gentlemen are. They are the BEST that I have ever come across, hands down! If you want the best haircut or shave, do yourself a favor, don't cheap out and instead, treat yourself to not only the best haircut you will ever get but a classic environment of a barbershop that'll put some hair on your chest as well! I went to this place for the first time last week. This barber shop is a gem, that takes you back to the day how barber shops used to be. I don't remember the name of the person that cut my hair, but he did a great job, and had a very personality. You want to find a place where the cut includes a back-of-the-neck shave, this is it. The only negatives I can think of is I don't think they do shampoo and tub wash. Also would be nice if you can have a cold one while they are cutting your hair. read more

Started going a year ago when I got a shave right before my wedding day. I had never been to a barber before, but they were very easy going and answered all my questions. I had a such a good experience with the shave that I've been going back ever since. Sure, it's a little more expensive than going to Great Clips, but they do a great job and you get what you pay for. I learned about the history of the barbershop while noticing that there were no power tools being used. I told him i wanted the same style but cleaner and tighter. He asked me what I do and where I work early on to understand that i need to look professional at work. Then, he used a straight razor to detail the look, even the neck and back to keep it very clean. There is no need to wait a week to avoid a "just cut" look.
