Merichka's is amazing. I've been eating here since I was a teenager(I'm 76 now)!! Still haven't had a bad meal, which is not surprising. Of course, the Poor Boy is the big deal here and rightly so. It's delicious and those pickles are great. You can't beat the onion rings either. Steaks and fish entrees are excellent as is the double baked potato. i was originally from joliet and this was a go to place for our family the service was good the food was disappointing from the standpoint of the size portions they are doing what a large portion of businesses are doing and thats cutting back in size, the price was fair so why didn't you leave the portion alone and raise the price a bit the poor boys were ok in taste but not like they use to be , even the onion rings used to have more coating and some of the rings were bare with no coatings we came with 7 people and when i took a pole on if they would come back , the verdict was no! I was here a couple of times almost 30 years ago and every once in awhile I wish I could remember where it was in that area I had that great steak sandwich on garlicy bread. Well I finally found the place again!!! Hubby and I split the dinner which we ordered with the double baked potato, a salad with their house dressing and a the relish tray. We each got a sandwich, his with american cheese, mine with grilled onions. * The relish tray had large beets in a vinegary marinade which was perfectly tangy. The cottage cheese had large curds and was creamy. The 3 bean salad was fresh with great flavor. * The house dressing was a russian, orange/red sweet type dressing. It was really good with a sweet/tangy flavor. Salad was more than enough to split with lunch, especially with everything else. * The double baked potato had a heaping help of the twice baked portion and was flavorful, but a tad dry. * We didn't eat any of the accompanying cracker basket, but it wasn't anything special. * Sandwiches were large and the entire reason for us being there. The 6 oz steak portion with the mass of grilled onions on a garlic butter soft french bread was to die for. I think I ate just less than half of the sandwich. We had enough for leftovers for another meal. The waitress, Kim, was super friendly and made sure our drinks (iced tea/soda) were refilled. The food was so good that my parents live not too far away and I bought them a gift certificate to try it later. We will definitely be back, food and service was excellent. Garlic steak poorboy, basket of onion rings - boom you're in culinary heaven. Can't miss this forever classic joint!

We ordered two poor boys to go. My brother in law recommended this place when we moved to Joliet after working in the area and he wasn't kidding. It's so good. We got one chicken and one steak and split them, they were delicious. And priced very reasonably too, in my opinion. We are up here for a Pro Wrestling show to raise money for our charity Wrestling For A Cure. Merikas was recommended to us. We were told Onion rings must order and poor boys. Well We had the 28oz porterhouse with baked tater and the 9oz wagyu with baked tater salads as well. The best part was when we told the waitress how we wanted it cooked, it was cooked absolutely right. Didn't even ask us if we wanted any steak sauce that's how you know it's right. Great atmosphere reminded me of Shane's in Springfield Illinois. Gets full pretty quick for dinner so go a little early. We will definitely be back next time we are here which is in May. read more

The meat was a dry, overcooked cube steak (cheap cut of meat flattened with a meat tenderizer). The bread was not bad, but that's it. Bread and meat. Every time I've eaten here, from when I was a kid through just recently, I leave with a smile on my face and a year's worth of garlic in my belly. The legendary po-boy is great, but I've often had the Yodel Burger, which is a hamburger with swiss cheese and the incredible bread and garlic coating/sauce. The chewiest and soggy but not mushy bread you'll ever have! Sides are good too, with the twice baked potato tasty. Dinners with relish and salads are good with homemade dressing-see blue cheese.
