I'm sorry to say but this place has really gone downhill. My Girlfriend and I make a point of coming out to Merichka's once or twice a year and to be honest with you the price keeps going up while the quality keeps going down. Place was crowded with super loud patrons with kids that were equally loud that seemed more like a Zoo than a pleasant Old School Dining experience. We ordered 3 Poor Boys 2 Chop Steak and 1 Chicken. 2 orders of Fries and 1 order of Onion Rings. The extra Poor Boy and Fries were take out for my Father that I wanted to give him for Supper when I got back home. The quality of the sandwiches were terrible, very bland and the Chop Steak was so marbled with fat that I couldn't chew it. Alot ended up on my plate! The Bread was hard as a rock and all you get is a few pickles on the side. If it wasn't for the A1 Steak Sauce I honestly wouldn't be able to scarf this down. As for the Fries and Onion Rings they were soggy and cold and dripping with grease! We had no Cocktails just water and 1 Diet Coke and the bill was almost $73.00 without the Tip, Prices have gotten Insane especially for the Crap they serve you and the Sandwiches come with no toppings like Lettuce or Tomato and everything is a la carte. $15.00 bucks for a Sandwich and they can't throw in some Fries? I have been coming here for the last 30 years and yesterday was our final time. It's over for sure. 24 hours later and I'm still sick as a Dog. After all that High Priced Grease and Salt I'm surprised I didn't have to go in for a triple bypass! My Father wasn't too happy with the take out either but I tried! I did add a generous Tip to the Bill because the only good thing about this whole mess is the Service was very good! My place to go to if I want a "PoorBoy sandwich". I have tried other spots and nothing comes close to this place. I usually get their Steak Poorboy and their spicy chicken poorboy. Both are so good! I usually get them with American cheese and their garlic butter. Definitely a must try if you like Poorboy sandwiches. Merichka's is amazing. I've been eating here since I was a teenager(I'm 76 now)!! Still haven't had a bad meal, which is not surprising. Of course, the Poor Boy is the big deal here and rightly so. i was originally from joliet and this was a go to place for our family the service was good the food was disappointing from the standpoint of the size portions they are doing what a large portion of businesses are doing and thats cutting back in size, the price was fair so why didn't you leave the portion alone and raise the price a bit the poor boys were ok in taste but not like they use to be , even the onion rings used to have more coating and some of the rings were bare with no coatings we came with 7 people and when i took a pole on if they would come back , the verdict was no! I was here a couple of times almost 30 years ago and every once in awhile I wish I could remember where it was in that area I had that great steak sandwich on garlicy bread. Well I finally found the place again!!! Hubby and I split the dinner which we ordered with the double baked potato, a salad with their house dressing and a the relish tray. We each got a sandwich, his with american cheese, mine with grilled onions. * The relish tray had large beets in a vinegary marinade which was perfectly tangy. The cottage cheese had large curds and was creamy. The 3 bean salad was fresh with great flavor. * The house dressing was a russian, orange/red sweet type dressing. It was really good with a sweet/tangy flavor. Salad was more than enough to split with lunch, especially with everything else. * The double baked potato had a heaping help of the twice baked portion and was flavorful, but a tad dry. * We didn't eat any of the accompanying cracker basket, but it wasn't anything special. * Sandwiches were large and the entire reason for us being there. The 6 oz steak portion with the mass of grilled onions on a garlic butter soft french bread was to die for. I think I ate just less than half of the sandwich. We had enough for leftovers for another meal. The waitress, Kim, was super friendly and made sure our drinks (iced tea/soda) were refilled. The food was so good that my parents live not too far away and I bought them a gift certificate to try it later. We will definitely be back, food and service was excellent. We are up here for a Pro Wrestling show to raise money for our charity Wrestling For A Cure. Merikas was recommended to us. We were told Onion rings must order and poor boys. Well We had the 28oz porterhouse with baked tater and the 9oz wagyu with baked tater salads as well. The best part was when we told the waitress how we wanted it cooked, it was cooked absolutely right. Didn't even ask us if we wanted any steak sauce that's how you know it's right. Great atmosphere reminded me of Shane's in Springfield Illinois. Gets full pretty quick for dinner so go a little early. We will definitely be back next time we are here which is in May. read more

Every time I've eaten here, from when I was a kid through just recently, I leave with a smile on my face and a year's worth of garlic in my belly. The legendary po-boy is great, but I've often had the Yodel Burger, which is a hamburger with swiss cheese and the incredible bread and garlic coating/sauce. The chewiest and soggy but not mushy bread you'll ever have! Sides are good too, with the twice baked potato tasty. Dinners with relish and salads are good with homemade dressing-see blue cheese.
