Absolutely love the Italian subs great dressing and nicely made. Took 1 star off as the bread was reheated and not that fresh. If you do go, the big hidden food item is the deep fried fish. Very fresh and hand breaded when you order. The jumbo shrimp are my favorite. They come with hush puppies which aren't my favorite. Lovely outside seating and nice cozy inside for the colder months. In a small mall so parking no issue. Outside appearance is inviting, however complicated amount of doors "which is the entry-way?" Very clean and inviting interior. Step up to a counter and place your order, they will bring your food out to you. Prompt and friendly girl took our order. Today.. jumbo shrimp, Cod Platter and a bowl of soup. Opted for self serve beverage (soda). All food served hot (cooked correctly, not oily, hard, or freezer burned). Completely enjoyed our experience. We go there often, I've always had the breaded and fried shrimp that I really like. They have good fries and coleslaw. As one gets two sides with the dinner, I usually opt for 2 coleslaws and give one to wifee in an attempt to cut down on calories (no fries). Wifee and others like the beef, burgers, chili, and my son-in-law especially likes the grilled chicken sandwich, claims they are the best. He also likes the fish and chips. The place is clean and the staff are very nice and deliver the food to the table. One extra nice feature is that the self-serve drinks dispense Coke and Pepsi products, very unusual but good for me because I prefer Coke and Wifee likes Pepsi. read more

It's all fresh and all quality all the time. From the homemade soup, to the char-grilled burgers, to the tasty shrimp, they never disapoint. Meals here are prepared fresh to order quickly. We've been coming here for years because we love the shrimp and the hush puppies. We've known that the attitude and behavior of the serves was less than desirable, but we tolerated it because of the food taste. However, our most recent experience was the LAST STRAW and we will not be coming back. Due to COVID-19, we called in our order and waited in our car outside. At the quoted time, I went inside. There was a guest there who had been there the whole time, talking without a mask. He was leaning over the counter where our food was waiting for us. The worst part was that the one worker there, who had prepared our food, wasn't wearing a mask either, and was talking just a few feet away from the other customer. Although this was just one event, it made me realize that management does NOT care about protecting the health of its vulnerable customers. The worker's attitude was "no big deal," which was further troubling. Do not go here unless you want to risk taking home something more than you ordered due to haphazard health procedures. read more

I've only been here once, and I have to say I was really impressed. The food was very good. I ordered the jumbo fried shrimp and french fries. The shrimp were huge, lightly breaded and cooked perfect with a nice cocktail sauce and the french fries or just plain awesome. I always say if I'm ever in the area I will definitely go back. Mark's on 59 is a hidden gem - quite literally on that "hidden" part. While you're speeding down Route 59 (come on, you're approaching I-55 at this point, you're going much faster than 45MPH) you're likely to fly right past Mark's without ever noticing they are here. Lucky for me, it's 2014, and we have Google Maps and GPS galore. It's on the east side of Route 59, next to a liquor store. The "Mark's" sign is partially covered by trees, and there isn't much around in terms of shopping and dining. When we pulled into the parking lot, it was empty. It looked dark inside, but I walked to the front door and saw two employees inside. The lights appear dim from outside, so don't leave! The exterior and front counter lead you to believe that Mark's is a "dive," just another greasy little fast food spot in suburbia. But turn around: the dining area is unexpected. There are a few TVs, sturdy oak tables, and a very attractive bar area. The shrimp is outstanding! The shrimp were generously sized and portioned, breaded evenly, crunchy, and not too greasy. Mark's offers large shrimp and jumbo shrimp in 1/2 lb and 1 lb baskets. I had the 1/2 lb of large shrimp, which to me, where jumbo. And the 1/2 lb filled me up like 1 lb would. The shrimp baskets come with two sides, so I chose the hush puppies and the fries. I would come back here just for sides of the hush puppies. Oh my YUM. Surely hush puppies alone don't merit a meal...but what if nobody's looking? Mark's menu also offers Italian beef, Polish sausage, hot dogs, and more. Prices are reasonable too. Lately, it takes a lot for me to get enthusiastic about anything featured on "Chicago's Best." As my husband says, "what restaurant HASN'T been on Chicago's Best?" Well, we were trying to decide where to go for lunch. By friend recommended a place we've eaten numerous times and I almost agreed. Instead I did a Yelp search nearby and found Mark's on 59. The reviews are good and when I suggested it my buddy was excited about it because he'd eaten there before and loved it. Done, Yelp expanding horizons daily!! Like so many places in Joliet/Plainfield/Shorewood areas Marks looks pretty scary from the outside. It is in a little strip mall attached to a really sketchy liquor store. Once you walk inside you immediately realize that you can't judge a place by its outward appearance. When you walk in you turn left and order at the kitchen window. The kitchen looks well maintained and extremely clean, good start. The entire restaurant looks custom decorated. I would be willing to bet that the owner has some contractor skills because the tiling, the fish tank and even the bar in the back look like they were done very meticulously. Only an owner puts that kind of time and effort into that work. Now, I read on Yelp that the Shrimp basket was the way to go and my friend echoed the sentiment. So when ordering at the window we each got a bowl of beef barley soup then split a 2# shrimp basket and a 1 pound smelt basket. I am a giant soup snob. This beef barley soup was far and away the best I have ever had. A++++ Huge hunks of beef and only a mild/moderate amount of barley. Usually it is the other way around (barley is cheaper than beef!) Shrimp Basket. A+ You may think, and I have always thought that a shrimp is a shrimp is a shrimp. I will now tell you that you are wrong. These shrimp were HUGE (like four bites huge), perfectly breaded, and tasted amazingly fresh. I can honestly say that Marks has re-set the bar for breaded shrimp, all others will be compared to these giant tasty scrimps! Smelt basket. B+ Smelt in general freak most people out due to the fact that you are consuming the entire fish. These were some of the better fried smelt that I've had. The taste was something along the lines of fresh pillowy fish-flavored dough sticks. I enjoyed them, but I have had really fresh fried smelt and these were certainly frozen (kind of an unfair comparison). I will order them again, they just werent the perfect consistency for an excellent grade. So, all in all, Marks will be my go to when I am craving beef barley soup or fresh fried shrimp. I do not normally post restaurant reviews especially during Covid when this industry has been so challenged. With that said, I need to post this because of the horrible experience I had. I drove to the Joliet area to conduct business and have dinner with 2 family members who have eaten here numerous times. Friday night, we wanted fried shrimp, they are supposed to have the best in town. We ordered our dinners at the counter, my brother and his wife first and then me. They brought my 2 family members dinner immediately 20 mins), very reasonable timeframe. We all waited for my food to arrive, and it never it did. I went inside to inquire about my food and the lady behind the counter ( claims to be the owner) told me I was up next. Ok, no problem. It went down hill from there. 30 mins later, still no food. When I went to the counter to inquire, the same lady started getting very confrontational with me saying she got slammed and was short staffed. I said but you told me I was next up and I have seen multiple people picking up food. My party was done eating there food. She got very snotty, handed me $30.00( even though I paid $33.00 ) And told me to get out of her restaurant. I was shocked! There were 3 people in back of the counter with her. They looked at me behind her back and mouthed I am sorry. I turned to the one person behind the counter and asked" was a nasty towards you in any way" they replied no, not at all. We left the restaurant but not until my brother ( who goes there all the time) went back in to tell them he was embarrassed and mortified as to what just happened to me. The employee he spoke to, apologized. The lady( alleged owner) was hiding and no where to be found. I called a friend who owns a local business and he told me he know the owners. I was a frequent diner here but unfortunately will not return after a recent horrible experience. Having had invited a guest for dinner, their first time, she never recieved her food for 45 minutes. Upon inquiring about the delay, this woman got belligerent and told us to leave, without any I'm sorry, or solutions to the issue. We all know the saying, the customer is always right. My philosophy is the customer isn't always right, but they are the customer. This women certainly has no idea or concept of making patrons feel like a valued customer. Quite surprised by this place. I didn't expect the inside to look so big and nice! There's even a bar in the back! There's something nice about seeing the owner doing the cooking. My 1/3 lb. bacon cheeseburger, Italian beef, and large fry came to about $12.50. The burger was the favorite, which I liked seeing getting seared on the grill right in front of me. They weren't skimpy on the amount of beef on my sandwich. It wasn't dripping with juice and the flavor had a stronger spice taste, which I hadn't experience with other beef sandwiches before. Owner very rude. My wife had a tuna sub. She took a bite and it's dripping out on sides. Told me look hardly no tuna. She went to counter and told the guy. He said you ate it. She just got het order. He put a scoop in the middle and it didn't fill the 6 inch bread. When he said the comment about She ate it wife told them forget it I don't want it. We can hear him cussing I put f### enough in there twice. Didn't even look at the sandwich She brought back. They was busy maybe rushed it. If he would of looked at the sandwich he would of seen the to much mayo tuna in middle of bread and didn't fill the 6 inch bread. I've tried their shrimp twice now, and both times were pretty impressive. This time we both ordered a 1/2 lbs. of the Large shrimp. Previously I ordered the Jumbo shrimp. The Large are a little better tasting to me than the Jumbo, though I wouldn't hesitate to have either one. The Jumbo taste a little bit like water, but I do believe they are fresh and not frozen. The batter is excellent, and doesn't overpower the taste or texture of the shrimp itself. One neat thing: you have a choice between cocktail sauce or Louisiana hot sauce. They are still serving Coke and Pepsi products, as well as a limited alcohol selection. There is something for everyone there. I've never been disappointed at Mark's, no matter what I order. The service is always great, and they bring your food to the table. How they remember who ordered what is beyond me, especially when they are as busy as they were during our visit. read more

First time there tonight. We went for the cod dinner. We were disappointed that the cod was just ok. I believe it's frozen and then fried. Husband had clam chowder and said it was a bit 'flour-y'. We arrived before the rush but had to wait about a half hour for our meals. We wanted to eat in the restaurant so we sat at a table. We had to ask another customer if we had a waitress or if we had to go up and order ourselves, which is what we had to do. We WILL go back, but not for the cod dinner. I would suggest some way to communicate how/where people need to place their orders so they know not to wait for a server. read more
