I walked in and was surprised that it was just a counter where the owner, Shirley, would conduct the "facial" for you in front of everyone in the store. No privacy, no quiet, no relaxation. Shirley just talked SOOOOO much, about herself, about all her clients, her clients' private business that it made me wary of divulging anything she asked me about, even what what the weather was like outside. And she asked me way too many questions that I felt she was writing a book. There were boxes of products all over the store, making it messy and uncomfortable to move around. Her husband came out with coffee which was nice...I should have gotten water instead. But I did like the products she placed on my face. I ended up buying the mask which made my skin feel smoother and look brighter. But never will I go back to this awful store. read more

This was not a facial. Although Shirley was entertaining it was not what we expected. I bought the Groupon for my mother's birthday. We did not have a facial and it wasn't relaxing. What we do have is a story to tell of how we went for a facial but received stories. Most of what people wrote was exactly what we experienced- a messy store, steam machine being propped up by magazines, layer after layer of creams with no explanations. I went there today for a facial which I was really looking forward too. That changed rapidly. The facial consisted of sitting on a hard chair in the middle of the store. A steamer propped up on magazines was put on my face for 20 mins and then a cream for another 10 mins. The owner stood leaning over the counter and wiped my face with a face cloth. During this she talked non stop about how busy she was. At this point I felt so uncomfortable that I said that I'm sorry but I have to go. Complete scam. Don't waste your time or money coming here. A "facial" consisted of sitting in the middle of a small, disorganized, dusty storefront on an uncomfortable high chair while people walked in and out. The lady was more than 15 minutes late and then rude to me, trying to make me cancel my appointment after I spent time and money driving there. Made me sit in front of the steamer while she was on her phone and doing other stuff for 15 minutes then half heartedly slapped some masks on my face (squeezing last of them from dirty tubes) and then roughly scraping them off my face. Products were covered in dust, some uncapped, and she'd drop stuff and then just pick it up off the ground and not wash them or her hands before continuing with the "facial." Refused to do any extractions despite it being a "deep-cleansing" facial. I honestly was appalled. I've gotten better service at Sephora. read more

I received this Groupon for a facial plus makeup as a gift. The owner Shirley does not seem like a professional facialist (Wonder if she has a state license). She was so sloppy swiping on cleanser, toner, & a mask that she got some product multiple times on my lips. When I went to dab it off with tissue she got defensive and said if it's in my mouth it won't hurt me. Umm...lots of things won't hurt me but doesn't mean I want to eat them! Then when she was putting on the mask I asked her if it had any synthetic fragrance in it. She flipped out and was angry & defensive - how she didn't make the products; how does she know; why would I buy a facial if I have sensitive skin; that I'm harassing her with all these questions - are some of the highlights dropped. All from a normal question about the product! I never even got angry with her as she continued her abusive tirade because her reaction was just so absurd. And for the record, before she started accusing me of only coming into the store to harass her, she never asked me about my skin, my skin care routine, any allergies I might have, or anything else vaguely appropriate for a skin care professional. If you have never heard about this make up, after you try it, it is the only makeup you will know... I have been using their luxiva cover up and powder since I was 15 and I am now 29... I was a bit upset when I moved to NYC only to find out they had everything but my beloved make up studio here. I just didn't get it. So I ventured from Brooklyn all the way to Scarsdale just to come to this store. Shirley (the owner) was amazing. She is so friendly and knows her make up. I wish Yelp had an option to give Merle Norman and its amazing owner Shirley more than 5 stars. My mom bought the two of us a groupon for facials and makeovers. We had the best time while Shirley pampered and made us over with undivided attention--for almost three hours (hours past the store's closing!!) We left feeling gorgeous, relaxed, and ready to attempt Shirley's magic on our own. Shirley was so patient and sweet as she applied each product. She took extreme care in making sure everything was clean, using new brushes and makeup pads for application. After the masks and gels Shirley applied, my tired winter skin was already looking refreshed. I did not think I even needed foundation, but I was glad I proceeded to get it. I've tried a lot of foundations and the Merle Norman foundation is hands down the best and most natural look. I ended up getting many of the products that Shirley used, but she put ZERO pressure on us buying them. I bought them because they looked and felt amazing. Shirley was very helpful in showing me how to apply everything and I felt like I left ready to it on my own. I cant' wait to go back to Shirley. OK facial but you get what you pay for and yes this isn't the typical spa like experience where you lay down and have a completely thorough cleansing. She will answer the phone or go to the back and her husband will bring you a cup of flat ginger ale to welcome you. She is very nice but definitely talks a lot so it's not very relaxing as a facial usually is. ATTENTION ANGER MANAGEMENT COACHES: You have two potential clients in this establishment who are easily enraged at the two syllable word "Groupon". I am still processing what took place as it is difficult to comprehend. I let my Groupon expire, so when I found myself in Scarsdale I decided to pop in and spend the amount paid for the voucher which "never expires". When I walked in, I started looking at product and a woman stated she would be right with me. She soon approached asking how she could help. So far so good! I told her that I had an expired Groupon that I wanted to spend... and before I could even finish my sentence, she completely dismissed me and said that I could not spend on product, it must be for service, as she WALKED AWAY FROM ME. Now, call me crazy... but as a business owner, this might be a good time to: A) evaluate how much someone is willing to spend on product (I was prepared to spend a minimum of $100) or B) politely explain that the money is only valid on services then take a moment to share what services are offered! I thought the point of Groupon was to acquire new clientele, not alienate new clientele? She totally ditched me and went back behind the counter and started talking to someone in the back about shipping a package. A bit taken aback and needing more clarity, I referenced the verbiage on the Groupon about the amount paid never expiring... She rudely replied again that is was ONLY for services and condescendingly stated that I would have to "pay extra"(Insert deep breath) I am sure there are plenty of Groupon users that try to squeak out the bare minimum, but I took great offense that she assumed that I was one of them. I took the opportunity to point out that she had someone in her store willing to spend money and I felt she was being extremely unfriendly. She was not receptive to the feedback and completely snapped. Her husband came flying out from the back and I found myself standing there stunned while two sixty-somethings were screaming at me!! Just a heads up--this is not a typical facial. You do not lie down in a private room. You do not get any kind of massage. You sit in a chair in the front of the store, in full view of passers by. Shirley applies lots of cleansers, gels and masks; and then she does your make up. She also answers the phone, constantly, while she is giving your facial. It is not at all relaxing. If you are going with a Groupon, you basically get what you paid for. That said, Shirley is very kind, generous, enthusiastic and very eager to please. But, I wouldn't go back. I walked out. The place was a mess. Boxes and piles of things everywhere. The woman helping me did absolutely nothing to make me feel welcome. I had no problem with the idea of doing a facial sitting on a stool - but wish she would have had some patience when I acted surprised. I have never done it that way before. She gave me a headband and started sloppily putting creams on my face, splattering my lap and telephone. I asked if I can move in my chair in as I was very uncomfortable and then realized I could not because there were a stack of unopened boxes where my feet should be. I have had many facials in my life in a lot of different environments and this establishment made me uncomfortable. They clearly had no idea what they were doing and I left. My daughter had bought me a gift- I chose not to use it. Such a shame. I never bother writing reviews on my experiences- I am a busy person but this was beyond a bad experience- it was a laughable. I had a WONDERFUL experience at Merle Norman the other day. My husband gave me a Groupon for a facial, and make over there. I have to point out that my Groupon was about to expire, but because there was no availability for an appointment when I called, Shirley immediately offered to extend the expiration so I could redeem it. I was so surprised by how great the experience was. I thought that I was going there to be possibly pressured to buy cosmetics. Shirley was so pleasant, and welcoming. She greeted me, and her husband offered me something to drink almost immediately. As she gave me the facial she was very pleasant, and friendly. I have been a customer at this Scarsdale store for many years. This morning I had the most humiliating and upsetting experiences I ever had from a store owner and Her Husband! Shirley, who everyone raves about, treated me like a criminal when I brought back a blush on that had a defective glue in the case which caused the cake of blush to fall out and break. I did not drop it, it fell out after a few uses. She refused to believe that I did not drop it, started to get really angry and abusive and then called for her husband who was in the back of the store. They both were yelling at me and called me a "con" artist! I couldn't believe how crazy they both were acting. They both came right up to my face, screamed at me and tried to throw me out of the store. Then they threatened to call the police!! She kept yelling that I was the "worst" customer she ever had. All because of a blush on! Needless to say, customer service and respect for a long time customer is not what you will get at this store! read more

Shirley is my go-to girl for all things Merle Norman! Now that my mom (who is 75 and looks like she's 60...a testament to MN's products!) lives in Central Oregon and doesn't have access to an MN studio, I stock up on her faves from Shirley's studio for when I send mom care packages. On both occasions when I was running late from work, Shirley kept her studio open an hour post-closing, waiting specifically for me until I could get there, and still gave me the same kind and courteous service she always does, never even mentioning the fact that I was so late. Shirley is an honest, trustworthy and customer-focused business owner who truly cares about her clientele and goes the extra mile (and hour, in my case, lol) to ensure that her customers have the best service and experience at her studio. Fabulous products, great location (in the heart of Scarsdale's shopping district) and amazing service...what more do you need? It's hard to say which is better - the Merle Norman products or Shirley, the owner/magician who gives incredible facials and makes me feel terrific. Needless to say, if it weren't for Shirley, I would never have sampled these products. I first started going there when I purchased a groupon and rushed in to use it before it expired even though it was not a great time for me as there was illness in the family. At first glance I was disappointed that this was a chair facial and not a spa-type lying down facial. Shirley told me this would be better and it was. The products she used, her gentle and long facial massage and the incredible moisturizing, along with her easy and soothing conversation, had me relaxed and refreshed in no time. Her husband keeping track of the time on the meter where my car was parked and running out to deposit more quarters, just added to the stress-free experience. When we got to the makeup portion, she could see I was preoccupied with what was going on at home. She said that she could tell I was not in the mood for a makeover but should come back when things settled down at home and she would give me a free facial and makeover. I took her up on her offer and have been going back ever since, despite the 45 minutes it takes me to get there. I've bought several makeup and moisturizing products, but not because she was pushing them, but because I love the products. She does not at all push anyone to buy things and, in fact, she usually tells me to try a few items and then buy more the next time if I want. Recently I had a large tube of tinted moisturizer leak from the bottom and she instantly replaced it for me. At the time I was having a facial, several other customers came in to purchase products, all singing Shirley's praises and some having driven long distances to be there. Her memory is amazing despite thousands of customers and she greeted each customer by name and remembered her favorite products, as she remembered mine. I've been there several times now and will continue to experience the amazing results Shirley creates with facials and makeup as often as possible. She loves what she does and it comes across in the care she gives each individual. At our first meeting she told me she would make me look 30 years younger. Well, if I don't LOOK that way after an hour or two with Shirley (she never rushes you, no matter how busy she is), I certainly FEEL that way! read more
