Great service and ribs! What you look for in an Alabama BBQ joint! Next time I'm going to get the burgers!

Now this is a BBQ shack! It looks like an old house with a window to order at with 4 picnic tables in a screen. Even though Merrill's calls itself a BBQ place, it could be more accurately described as a place that serves some BBQ with other items like sandwiches, vegetables, and desert. It really isn't much of a BBQ place as it only serves pork and ribs. First of all, I had a huge cup of amazing sweet tea that was only $1.50. When was the last time you went to a restaurant (besides McDonald's ) was charged only a $1.50 for a huge cup of fresh, mar-vel-ous sweet tea? Never. I had the rib plate that came with 3 sides and cornbread. My ribs were of the country spare-rib style. Definitely not the fall off the bone tender style. They were pretty average and no kind of rub on them. Merrill's have 4 BBQ sauces. But they make a sin to me of charging for extra sauce. I couldn't try them all so I went with the #2 tangy and #3 hot. The #2 was described accurately as it was tomatoey, hickory, smoky taste and easy to take. The hot was no joke though. Could not take much of it at all. It had a good flavor but too much heat for me. What's worse is that the #4 sauce is hotter. The best part of the meal was the sides. There are plenty of sides to choose from. I went with cream corn, potato salad, and Cole slaw. I would want to go back to Merrill's just to order a plate of sides. The cream corn was fresh, the potato salad was a good blend of mustard and mayo and sweetness, and the Cole slaw was the best out of the bunch as it was creamy, with a good twist of sweet and vinegar. All of this was about $11. Hard to beat that price. I had chocolate cobbler and it was ok. Tasted more like chocolate gravy haha. As a BBQ place, I found Merrill's not to be that impressive for BBQ. But there is a lot of other good stuff to offer especially the sides and the sweet tea. Locals say the burgers are the best thing they have so I will have to try it when I come back. For the price, Merrill's is a great deal. But because it calls itself a BBQ place and the ribs were just eh...plus charging for BBQ sauce - I had to give it a 3...but more like a 3.5. When I have a burger from there, I might change my rating. read more

We found this place on Yelp on our way to TN. We got a regular BBQ pork sandwich each & I got the Mac-n-cheese & the hubby got French fries (small steak fries). We each went w/the tangy BBQ sauce & the even finely chopped my hubby's BBQ sandwich for him since he has dental issues. I found the pulled pork to be finely pulled & the tangy sauce was just that, tangy, smokey & tomato based. The Mac-n cheese was to die for.... Creamy, cheesy & out of site! Hubby said fries were ok (I personally don't like steak fries so I can't comment on those) Both the hubby & I thought this was a good BBQ joint & you couldn't beat the service or price! The service was outstanding! They accommodated my husband's request w/a smile & quickly was no issue w/our request. The health score was 96 which I imagine was quite an accomplishment w/it being such a older, "hole in the wall" kind of place. The seating is outdoors w/picnic tables (about 4) w/fans & it is screened in so the bugs won't get ya! It was very pleasant cross breeze in the early evening. Yelp did not disappoint! On a road trip & wanted an easy in & out. This is a classic BBQ shack with picnic tables in a screened in room or a drive through. We did the drive through. The wait was a bit long just for pulled pork sandwiches but the food was good and the sweet tea size was HUGE for the price! read more

First time here. My expectations were high based on previous reviews, but unfortunately it fell short. I ordered the pork potato. The potato itself was soft and moist, which was nice, but the pork was bland. I really didn't taste any smoke at all. It could have been oven roasted as far as I could tell. The sauce (#2) tasted like a commercial product that had been slightly "doctored". It wasn't bad, but I thought I'd get something made from scratch. I'll probably come back to try one of the burgers which are said to be really good. Otherwise, my summary is, "Meh." read more

Stopped here for lunch while in town, tiny quaint place with some great bbq! Had the pork plate with fried potatoes (so Good!) slaw, greens and cornbread. Only 4 tables, all full so I just ate in the truck. Seems to do quite a bit of takeout and drive thru. Highly recommend you give it a try! read more

5 stars because it delivers what it promises! The office ladies & I order from here about every 2-3 weeks and I can't recall having anything bad. It's very busy at lunch so call ahead. BBQ anything is good, but ask for sauce on the side. This BBQ stands alone on taste so I never add sauce. The hamburgers are old fashioned, you know, 100% beef without fillers. The large will fill you up by itself. Cream corn is usually fresh. Fries are very good. BBQ salad is huge! The fried potatoes are great & sell out fast. It's always hard to decide what to get when ordering from here but it never disappoints. read more

Their hamburgers are to die for. The large is HUGE and they will cook them to order. I try to go here every week for a burger. I take my wife a BBQ sandwich and a homemade cobbler. The dining area is a screened porch with picnic tables with no AC, but it is heated in the winter. read more

The place is infested with roaches. This is no lie. I have seen them first hand. The guy that chops the meat wears no shirt and sweats (because of heat of pit) over food. The only reason this happens is the meat is chopped once a week and at 5 a.m while the health dept is closed. The meat isn't cooled properly. It is stacked way to thick (2in guideline for cooling meat) it doesn't cool fast enough in the coolers when not done properly....The food maybe good if u can stand all the sweat and roaches read more
