So this club is owned by a trust. There is little to no accountability from management or corporate when it comes to incidents. BBB shows a rating of D- as they haven't responded to their complaints. The manager at this club Ryan W. isn't in control of his staff. We were members here for a while but after one of the staff members was coming to the kids zone and asking inappropriate questions about my kids I attempted to report her and the staff invalidated my child's reports and pretended like it never happened. A child drowned in the pool here in the summer of 22'. I don't recommend. read more

The Merritt is a one stop shop gym. You can do a little bit of everything here. From weights, to yoga classes, swimming and more. I appreciate the amount of locations they have. I wish there was one a little loser to me though. The Team here are always helpful. Only down side is the price . I wish it wasn't so expensive. read more

First start with you. Are you willing to commit to change the way you look in the mirror. This place is not suave lux. This place has everything you'll need to copy those videos you've seen to shape up. Truth is it will take minimum 8 weeks to notice a change. This is not a diabetic pill solution. I'm currently a part of a complimentary wellness program offered through MAC that is allowing me to use all of the locations. White Marsh is closer to me, but so far I really prefer Towson. Towson is less crowded and seems to have less "meat heads" so I am more comfortable working out there. I also took a class and LOVED it despite not being able to always understand the instructor due to current mask wearing. I really think I am going to end up joining at the end of this wellness program though. My boyfriend says this location has the best sauna in the area if you're into that. read more

I loved this place when I was a member here and I really feel like they had everything. The company that I worked for had an employee discount here so I decided to give it a try. Signing up was not a problem which I can't say for the most part. And even canceling which I sadly had to do, there were no problems and they had clear expectations upfront. This was the first gym I've been a member to that had a pool and ask much as I thought I'd use it, I didn't. The cardio equipment is top notch and I always found myself on the trusty treadmill. Nice variety of machines here, looked like they had decent personal trainers if you're into that thing, and they kept the place nice and clean. I also took some classes here that I really enjoyed. It looks like a lot of people enjoy as well Becusse it's always packed. I had a hard time finding this gym the first time, it's tucked away a little bit. read more

I've been to a lot of gyms all across the country. I've been to luxury gyms as a well as small town gyms. This one sits right in the middle. It's definitely way bigger than the small town but not quiet as luxurious as the luxury. I especially enjoy the barre and yoga classes. I just don't like that I have to register 2 hours before class to ensure my spot, as I like to wake up and go right in. Then you have to check in before class but more than 10 minutes before or else you'll drop. It's a lot to remember and have to do just to take a class. I really enjoy the weight machines. The turf area looks fun but I just haven't ventured that far yet. I love that there's both an indoor and outdoor pool. One of these days I'll have to take advantage of them. As far as cost... I've definitely been to cozier gyms with more amenities and lower membership fees. I've also been to much smaller gyms that offer way more classes at an even lower membership rate. So the rates in my opinion are a little high. This is why they lost one of my stars. read more

This was the first gym I ever joined in my life and I honestly could not have asked for a better one. I scoped out all the other local gyms and while this one was one of the pricier options, I still went with it because it came with so many amenities. I basically live in the cardio cinema and the sauna. I've only visited this location, Cockeysville, and Buckingham, but this is definitely my favorite and if I weren't moving out of the area then I would definitely stay with this gym. I have never had a bad experience here; everyone is incredibly helpful and so friendly. I lost my Fitbit once and Ms. Rosa was kind enough to find it and keep it safe for me which only added to my amazing experience here. Overall joining this gym has also helped to boost my confidence and help me live a more active and healthier lifestyle. Also highly recommend any class with Maria Mager and cycle with Bill Cook! The only downside was being unable to bring guests for more than a day considering how much you pay for a membership. But otherwise, no complaints! read more

My emails and calls directed to customer service have been totally ignored; poor response to complaints. Many members do not have any sense of gym etiquette, e.g., sitting on equipment texting, incessant talking (loudly) on cell phone while using stationary (which is supposed to be against Merritt policy), listening to music on speaker phone in weight room; cell phones in men's room and unsupervised children (are not a good idea). There should be a Merritt employee monitoring workout areas at all times. Everything that I have mentioned has been brought to the attention of club managers as well as customer service--at corporate level. I have gone to MOD as some of these events were occurring, and absolutely nothing was addressed. Merritt clubs are way too expensive to have to tolerate this kind of behavior and poor customer service. read more

I have been a member of your fitness club from 2019- present and was for another two years prior to that. You do have some very nice facilities. All was fine until a major problem occurred in one of your facilities and as far as I'm concerned a business shows its true colors during times of conflict. My experience shined a light on the fact that your organization has a major issue: that issue is LGBTQ bias that starts at the top. I was egregiously sexually harassed at this facility and your biased leadership handled the situation poorly and negligently. Literally asking me to put myself in the shoes of the person performing a lewd sex act, who has exhibited this behavior on more than one occasion. The Human Relations Commission is looking into your practices. I'm not just some lone person experiencing an isolated incident. It is well known that your COO is a homophobe and my experience is just one of many. As I have shared my experience, others have come forward about your policies and practices. You consider gay men less than despite actively marketing to us. In my conversation with your COO, it appears that you would also show such a callous disregard for the safety of women too. All is well in a Merritt Club until it is not. If someone sexually harasses or assaults you, they will not have your back. Their processes and procedures are broken. They have had the cinema room down for 3 weeks now. Every time we come they say ohh it just went down but have been saying it for 3 weeks. If it's broke fix it, we pay a lot for a membership I'm sure they can afford a technician to fix it. Also they never told us when we joined that you couldn't have guests on weekends to the pool, rude. I would first state not a member. But, Denard almost sold me on signing up immediately for a Gold membership. 24 hour basketball is a big factor for me so Towson not having it was a slight drawback. He did mention Downtown having basketball which is part of Gold membership; that is why I'm still interested. The outdoor pool is amazing with the slide. Definitely a resort feel. Tons of workout equipment. Hopefully the safety measures can be lifted to fully utilize the space. Personally I would have adjusted to foot traffic and made one racquetball court and one basketball court instead of two racquetball courts. This gym is OK. Other M.A.C.s in the area are much better. The PROS: 1. The movie room is a really cool concept. 2. The weight room is well equipped The CONS: 1. I can see why there are adult only sections of changing rooms. There are times when waves of pre-teens and teens flood into the changing rooms from the pool, and it's very hard to maneuver around them. 2. The floors of the locker room can get very slippery, especially around the entrances and exits 3. Most of the ellipticals/ treadmills/ etc don't have TVs attached, and half the TVs on the wall are playing the same channel 4. The bike room is tiny and cramped 5. The White Marsh and Baltimore city locations are much newer, nicer, and staff is friendlier. Also, google maps is a little confused about the exact location of the gym. Just keep driving around until you find the right parking lot. read more

This was the first of Leroy Merritt's now famous chain of gyms. Originally a racquetball place (with only nautilus equipment) that even served beer to its members! (It had a bar). This location is a little worn at times, but people keep to themselves and you don't feel like people are watching you. The crowd is older too. The gym is smaller than the latest and greatest over in Canton, but it has a pool as well and steam and sauna rooms. I like this one and the Canton location (for different reasons). The classes are not as good at the Towson gym, but you feel more comfortable at the original location. Another note, the Towson gym membership is a lot less than the Canton membership (Canton's membership you have to join all the locations where the Towson one you can choose not to do that). read more

I have been going to this Merritt for 6+ years. They recently completed a renovation in 2011. Generally I only go to Merritt to do cardio. I do very little lifting, so don't have much of an opinion on the weight lifting equipment. What I like best about this Merritt is that it is not too crowded on the weekdays compared to the other gyms. There are usually at least a couple treadmills available when I get there. All the classes I have attended have also been great. Also, the cardio room is pretty cool. They will play some newer movies in the cardio room sometimes and it passes the time when on the treadmill. Some of the things I don't like are the locker rooms. It's not that it's dirty, but for some reason they have carpet. It makes the locker room smell really bad because it gets wet in there, especially with the pool. Also the lap pool always seems to have some type of swim team or tri club activity right after work hours. So you have either swim really early or really late at night. read more

Overall, the Towson, Canton, and White Marsh locations are my favorites. Always clean and welcoming. The reason why I did not return to Merritt is that the cost is outrageous. I believe it is quite ridiculous that the student discount is based upon age and not the fact that a person is a student. I believe that the maximum age to be considered for the student discount is 25; and it seems quite antiquated because many students are non-traditional. Merritt Athletic offers great equipment and the classes are second to none. However, I believe that their business could thrive at a cheaper monthly price, however, I haven't looked at their financial statements or balance sheet to assess their assets and liabilities. read more

I like this place but it wasn't for me. I'm just into lifting weights and running. Their weight room is OK but needs some more equipment. They have a HELL of a lot of other activities so you will definitely not get bored. If lifting weights is not the only thing you do, than check this place out. I've been coming to this location more frequently because we now have a family membership and the teenager isn't allowed at DAC (which is not a poke at them, just stating the facts). It took some time to figure out when it's less busy with kids running around (weekdays after 7) so we can work out without disruption. We love the cinema cardio room and the different equipment. There's many nook and crannies to work out as we please. The staff here is fantastic, and the out door pool (which we are patiently waiting to open for season) is amazing. Would love a basketball court (hint hint). read more

This is definitely one of the better Merritt locations. It is a fairly large facility with a lot of activities and things to do for people of all ages. They have karate and swim classes for kids and group fitness classes and stationary equipment for adults. They also have racquetball, which seems to be a big favorite because there are always people on the courts. I usually just go for the group fitness classes. I wish that their fitness rooms were a little bigger because some of the more popular classes get very crowded. I personally love BodyStep and Zumba! They are a lot of fun and the instructors are great! read more

Long time member, and love staff and Kid Zone, facility is clean and friendly. Lately however, the weight room etiquette has become almost unbearable. A new culture that never existed before has taken over putting the safety or members in jeopardy. It has become acceptable that to walk away from machines with out re-racking weights. My workout time has been extended by at least ten minutes due to picking up after everyone else. I have mentioned this to many of the staff and was actually told that one of the only ways to make change is to write a yelp review! The club recently striped "Athletic: from it's title to promote a more pleasant and supportive environment, and It's only becoming worse. I also agree with every other review on here that sites how wet and dangerous the locker room is during swim team practice. I hope it doesn't take someone being hurt to take action on either complaint. read more

My twin boys had an indoor pool party here for their birthday. Although there were conditions out of no one's control, Eric, Max, and Malaysia( I know it's not spelled like the country! I joined Towson to have a place to bring my grand-daughters to swim and play. 1) For their first indoor activity class, no instructor showed up. 2) Multiple times I signed them into the kids play area only to have to pull them out because bigger children were being disruptive and dangerous and the high- school-age staff could not control them. 3) I was given times for private swim classes, only to show up to find that the instructor had not been informed by the pool director and she already had students during that time. 4) I showed up for swim lessons, changed the girls and entered the pool area to find that the pool was closed. A sign at the front desk would help!!! Plus Merritt sends out multiple emails about other closures. 5) We went to semi-private swim lessons, to have my girls cling to the side ignored, while the instructor wrestled with two smaller girls that could not follow instructions. 6) I went for private trainer session and trainer had me block a walkway upstairs against my protestations - Her comment "This is your gym, you can be anywhere." I spend her session moving out of the way or having people step over me. **Merritt needs more experienced supervision for all their areas. read more

I'm a stay at home mom with 2 preschool age kids. I go to the gym on weekdays at 9 when the childcare opens. I am very pleased with the childcare facility, which is glass-enclosed/open air so you can always peek in on my kids to make sure they're ok! The staff are friendly and helpful and the environment is laid back and not intimidating, with members of all ages and ability levels. I make use of their indoor pool quite often, as well as the cardio cinema. Some things I'd like to see improved: the outdoor pool is not family friendly: the main pool does not have a true "shallow end" for little kids, very little shade, no outside food and drink are allowed, and there are no climbers, etc. for kids who need a break from the pool. Specialty amenities, like the cardio cinema, are often closed for maintenance. Overall, the amenities and friendly environment make a Merritt membership worth the money. read more

Too expensive compared to other gyms but do have a pool kbut you can hardly use cause they have a swim team of kids aways using it so I gave up my membership that I had for 4 years the other things in club are alright I was already paying a lot and they uped the dues 2 times in 4 years $5 each time I was paying over $80 a month so I quit and they lock you in for 2 years when you first sign up I joined for the pool and hardly got to use it cause of the swimteam I work 6-330 so I could not go in morning cause I have a half hour ride to work they open at 5am and swim team starts at 4pm read more

Longtime member of the Towson location here. I enjoy the gym--especially the periodic upgrades to the equipment, towel service, and the fact that the staff works so hard to keep things clean. That said, I spend a lot of time in the weight area, which has grown more crowded in the past year. One certainly expects equipment access and floor space to be limited during peak times, but now it always seems busy. As flexible as I try to be with my routine, people can only wait so long in between sets to wait for equipment and racks. I'm open to working in with other members, but you can't do that easily with everything, and the unfortunate truth is that not everyone is nice about it. (Sorry, folks, but a few of you are way too territorial for your own good. I don't pay a special reduced rate that obligates me to get out of your way whenever you feel like getting your Arnold on ;) When there's no room to work out in front of the dumbbell rack, people often squeeze themselves between pieces of less-used equipment around the room, which makes it challenging to travel down certain aisles. I observed this the other week, when someone was doing kettlebell swings less than a few feet away from another person who was doing bench presses and a personal trainer who was working with her client. At least no one bumped into each other, but it was close. Merritt clearly invests a lot of resources in expanding its membership base, but it can't do that without also expanding its spaces to accommodate everyone. The latter doesn't seem to be happening. Limited equipment availability and floor space would be significant issues in ANY gym, but it is especially problematic at a venue that costs as much as it does. If the current trend continues, I will have to reconsider my membership. read more

This gym is one of the nicest gyms I have ever been in. It's very clean and state of the art. Everyone who works there is very helpful and friendly. They have every machine and piece of equipment you could possibly need. The only thing I dislike and it's a big thing, is the guest policy for the outdoor swimming pool. You can only bring guests during the week and I think that's bs because most people work during the week and can swim then. It's weekends when I'd like to enjoy the pool with my guest. I pay $80 a month which is a premium price to have the pool and I can't enjoy it like I'd like. The pool is the only reason I joined this gym, but knowing what I know now...I likely won't renew my membership after this year. As much as I love it there it just stinks to not be able to bring a friend when you have an available pass. I get that they try to keep the pool for only members but the pool was pretty empty this summer - one more person wouldn't have hurt. Wifey and I had two separate gym memberships, Brickbodies and JHU and we would join a pool over the summer. This was getting too expensive and there weren't many benefits for our children. When the construction on Merrit's outdoor pool was completed, we spoke to Barbie about joining up and were sold. It was a no brainer to consolidate everything into one family membership here plus there are a lot of great options for the kids. I love how my wife and I can take a class or work out while the kids are in Kids Zone. We love the Cardio theatre. The outdoor pool is awesome! The kids learned how to swim here. Even on a busy day, it's not that crowded. Our membership allows us to visit other locations like White Marsh or Eldersburg. Over all, we love Merrit! read more

This is one of the older Merritt locations, but they are undergoing renovations. They have a mix of cardio equipment and it can get busy, but I've never had to wait for a treadmill. This Merritt also has two pools - a rec pool and a lap pool with 5 lanes. They have different clubs and events that go on, so be sure to look at the pool schedule before taking the trip over. I love the spin classes here, and they offer a wide variety of group fitness classes. There are a few racquetball courts, some weight machines, and free weights. I just haven't found a nice empty area for stretching yet. read more

Compared to the other Merritt gyms I go too, this one is not my favorite. I feel like there's not enough weight equipment (I'm serious), but otherwise there are plenty of cardio machines, and classes, so you have plenty to pick from. Everyone leaves you alone. What a lot of fun activities packed into one location! While I took a spin class (which was loads of fun), my daughter was able to swim with a friend in the pool while my son went into the XRKade. The XRKade combines gaming and working out, so it's never boring. The boxing, skate boarding and dance dance revolution kept my son occupied and having fun. What a great way to engage kids in a way other than sitting in front of the TV or video games! The club itself has nice locker room facilities, a pleasant staff, and a large selection of cardio equipment. I'll definitely be back! read more

I joined merritt primary for the pool, upon sign up my husband and I discussed this with the team member and we had previously joined for the outdoor pool. It is QUITE pricey to just join for this, but it is more convenient for us than other local pools. The second time we signed up we signed our 12 month old son up as well (as the first time he was still in my belly). Upon going to the outdoor pool, we were told NO SWIM DIAPERS in the pool. THIS IS SILLY, as it was the only reason we joined. Other merritts allow swim diapers. So this means if I want to get in the pool, I can soak my ankles in the kiddie pool alone, I cannot hold my son and take a quick dip on the main side, which makes for one HOT summer. NOT WORTH THE PRICE. THIS POLICY NEEDS TO CHANGE. read more
