We tried this drive-in on a Saturday and enjoyed the old school feel. Our waitress was so sweet and called us hon/sweetie and was quick. You could tell the staff were working hard. It was fun just hanging out in the car and the nostalgic vibe. Since it's a burger house, we ordered burgers, fries, a vanilla milkshake and a bottled soda. It was around $21. It is cash only! The burger was just okay and could've used a bit more flavor. The fries were good and my son loved the milkshake. Next time I might try a hot dog since that seems like another popular item. Overall, the food isn't amazing, but the experience and nostalgic atmosphere made it worth the visit. read more

OK, this is the quickest turnaround for a review I've ever provided. I actually just left Merritt's Burger house not even five minutes ago. A little bit of a backstory - every month or two I crave a good chili, slaw, and ketchup hotdog (I know, not quite Carolina style) - and I'm determined to find one as good as the place in my hometown in Charleston. So far, I've never been close. Until today. And I've been on this mission for about 10 years. After hearing from a bunch of Wilmington locals that this is the place I should try, I was finally able to go today. They are open I believe from 10 to 4 Monday through Saturday. Cash only. You drive up to a parking spot. Park. Roll down your window. And wait for the people to come take your order. I believe I came at one of the busiest times ever - I think every single parking spot was full. But the lady saw that I pulled in and she was over to take my order as soon as reasonably possible. I only had a $20 bill so I was worried about how much I could order. Oh my gosh! What a silly concern. I was able to get two hotdogs the way I like it with chili, slaw, and ketchup, I also ordered a plain hotdog for my dog, and she rang it up just as a wiener that has no bun. Perfect. She told me that I would still have money left over with my $20 bill to get fries and even a drink. I ordered a Diet Coke and I was surprised that it came out in a beautiful wonderful bottle! Delicious! And the fries are crinkle cut fries! You won't even believe me when I tell you that that entire order was $11.75. I was amazed! It probably took about 10 minutes to receive my food. But it's a nice day and I was just chilling in the car until it was ready. Not a bad weight when we have our phones, music on the radio, and especially if you were in the car with some friends or family members like many people were today. I've already eaten one hotdog and it is absolutely delicious. The slaw is finely chopped and sweet. It adds such a nice touch to the hot dog. And the chili is actually on point. Also finely ground. The hotdogs are that bright red style that is common around eastern North Carolina. I know that is some people's preference, but I will say that the look has always scared me and I've actually stayed away from a lot of places that serve the style of hot dog. Well, that was foolish. This thing was so good. Probably the best hotdog so far that I have had in the state of North Carolina, and believe me, I have tried hotdogs across the state and surrounding ones. Don't know how they have such good reviews, they deserve negative stars. Went today around 130PM ordered 2 cheeseburgers, fries, hush puppies and chocolate and strawberry shakes. Took more than 30 minutes to get our crappy food and guy next to us that ordered after us got his food before us. Burger were gross, hard like a hockey puck as well the bun, hard like a hockey puck. Hush puppies were gross tasting and weird after taste like they hadn't changed oil in weeks in the fryer. Shakes were thin, like water, it was like drinking strawberry milk & chocolate milk. Threw almost everything out except the fries. No need to return, on the outside wall of this biz it says "good food." Nowhere near good, I think a preschooler can make a better burger!! This place sucks. Took forever for waitress to come back to get payment so I went in to pay her, guy behind counter cooking asks how it was and I gave him honest feedback and he laughed. No need to return here and anyone thinking about going here, think twice and go to PT Burgers or Cookout or any other burger place but here!! read more

Long standing establishment in Wilmington serving up your standard burger house fare. Reasonable pricing. The server was top notch. Running in and out taking orders, delivering food, remembering which car had been served or not. I ordered a burger, a hot dog, fries and diet coke. A genuine throwback burger drive in. Service in your car under a comfortable shady overhang. Nice menu and of course I had to sample the cheeseburger dressed the way you like it. Great old fashioned fries. Service was quick and attentive. I'd go back in a heartbeat not necessarily for the quality of food as much as the quality of The people running the business. Can't beat the prices here! We got two burgers, a hotdog, large fry & two drinks for $11!! You pull in & pick a spot to park and they come up and take your order & then bring it out to you. We ate there so it was brought on a tray that attaches to your window. There was only one person working the whole lot and man was she hustling. Our order was slightly wrong but it wasn't a big deal, just a forgotten item that we ended up being too full to want. I don't particularly care for the burgers but my boyfriend did so it's just a personal thing. I really enjoy their hotdogs and would come back to get them again. We've tried to stop in a few times on prior trips but they were either closed or on vacation. We did some planning this time and it worked. This place is a fully functional food museum. It's everything I remember fast food places to be when I was a kid. Everything from the fair prices to the great service to the visible meat content. We went with double cheeseburgers, fries, hushpuppies, and shakes. Everything was good. Not the best I've ever had but solid. We'll definitely stop by again. Just ok. The burgers are assembled then cooked in a flat press. Lettuce, tomato, and all... Very strange to bite into a burger and get a steaming hot tomato burning the hell out of your mouth. Fries are crinkle cut and unseasoned which I didn't mind since they give you salt packets. Sweet tea was great. Overall, no real showstoppers here. read more

Horrible experience here the waiter was very rude they messed up my order twice and when I told them no coleslaw the put it up there when I said something to them they told me to scrap it off my plate with any other thing I would have but I'm allergic to cabbage and the juice from the slaw got all in my other food. I grew up in Wilmington and went to Merritt's as a child. As an adult it is the one restaurant stop I make every time I go home. The service is always great and the food is hot and delicious. This place is a throwback. It's a drive-in where the waitress comes to your vehicle, takes your order and brings back your food on one of those aluminum trays from way back. They've been in business since 1960 and there's a good reason for that, this place is great. The wait staff is always friendly and fast. The food is always excellent. I've only had the burgers, hotdogs and fries but they serve barbecue and some other things. The burgers and dogs are so good that I don't even want to try any of the other offerings. This place serves the best slaw dog I've ever had anywhere. Paul's may have the best relish, but this place has the best slaw. The prices seem like they haven't been updated in 10 years so if you're looking for good eats on the cheap, you can't beat it. read more

It's a mixed review. This was my first time here. I like the drive in feel and eating in my truck. The service was great. Very speedy. The biggest surprise was the pressed burgers and the price. For $9.00 we got two double burgers, two large fries and two large bottles of Coke. This is a good deal. It was served with plenty of ketchup on the side. My wife didn't like her burger very much because it was run through a grill sandwich press which flattened the bottom bun to a quarter inch. As I bit into mine it was very hot and I thought with the double patty very meaty. As soon as I was ready to go I cranked the engine and the car hop was there to retrieve the tray. Yes I said car hop. And what's a car hop grandpa? How many times has the waitress in other restaurants forgot you when it time to pay the bill? Just don't expect the usual fluffy high stacked double burger with a soft bun. Because it's more of a grilled cheese sandwich of a burger. So yes I will go back.
