Customer service at the store is great. Wonderful selection of floor covering products. In-store personnel are helpful and patient. Installation, however, does not match in-store service. The installers were careless. They scratched paint on walls of the bedroom being carpeted and they scratched finished wood on bedroom furniture and doors. Expensive to repair. I received 4 proposals from flooring companies in Marin, three within $200.00 and one more than double the other 3 proposals. I selected Mertel Carpets based on friends' recommendations and media reviews. The work was scheduled and performed in a very professional manner within the specified time period and to our satisfaction. The flooring, when installed, was above our expectations. Jeff checked in frequently on the installation to ensure it was done to his and our satisfaction. Based on this we will be seriously looking to Mertel for new carpeting in 2020. read more

I wish I could give them 10 stars. Jeff is the perfect mixture of easy-going and detail oriented. I stumbled across his shop one day after visiting a few larger businesses, and he immediately put me at ease with his professionalism and knowledge. I went in to the shop four or five times before deciding on a final floor, picking up and dropping off samples each time and never felt like I was being annoying and indecisive even though I was! When I changed my mind mid job, about a section of the floor, he pivoted easily. Everything about the installation process was seamless. Jeff came over to measure and answer questions, and his installers were a pleasure to have around, and the quality of their work was outstanding. We recently moved to the area and we needed hardwood floors for the entire house. Mertel Flooring was recommended by 2 friends and we went there first. Jeff, the owner, met with us and explained the different types of floors and sent us searching his floor room of samples. We settled on a nice Hickory hardwood. Within a day, Jeff went to the house which was being renovated, measured and had a proposal for us. We placed our order and Jeff was to work in conjunction with painters and sheetrockers to try to complete our job prior to the move-in date. A few weeks into our house project, we were notified by Jeff that there were supply issues from the East Coast for our wood delivery. He made every attempt to rush the now delayed order while keeping us informed of the situation. When most of the wood was finally delivered, Jeff's people worked hard to finish the larger areas, to facilitate our movers. Within a few weeks, Jeff's crew (Marco & guys) was able to complete the job to our immense satisfaction. The detailed trim work was outstanding as well. At my request, Jeff had Marco return a month later to install a newly needed transition piece. Jeff and his crew were extremely efficient and friendly. I spoke to 4 different companies, Mertel Carpets (MC) was one of them. MC gave me an outrageous bid. That's OK. Some are more expensive than another. Well, this is not the reason why I am spending my time to write this review. I was going to let it go until now, we have completed our beautiful flooring project with a different company in Marin. 1) Mertel Carpets took incorrect measurements of my rooms, probably because they wanted to charge more for the $ per sq. ft . So, I measured the rooms myself, and I realized that they added an additional 17% more square feet onto the bid. Say If you had a 1000 sf. project, $10/sf. for material: 10 x 170 (extra sf.) = $1700 rip off. Very obvious! Material price? Another rip off, just too high. *You guys should always measure your space before you speak to a flooring company. Tell them what you know. So, they won't rip you off! 2) Demolition was over $600. The other 3 companies were between $300 - $400. MC, why? 3) The person from MC did not take the job seriously from the moment he/she stepped into my door. The first impression is so important to me as a potential customer, and Mertel Carpets did not make me feel like a valued customer. Some of us are smarter than you think! I love this company, and especially working with Jeff Mertel. I opened my first storefront business this past year and my building owner, who owns properties all over Marin, swore by Mertel for our flooring needs. We had some unique requests - in addition to wanting it to look super high-end a la the W hotel, we had a lot of germ-related pet concerns. We needed floors that would not absorb disease or smell (so no wood), would hold up to a lot of bleach (like vinyl) yet look super homey and warm. The typical products used are restaurant kitchen & kennel products that hold up well but are very ugly - often that spotty gray or beige stuff. Being a high end luxury hotel, that wasn't going to fly. So we asked Jeff to dig deep into his contacts and find us the perfect solution. What Jeff ended up presenting was a gorgeous faux hardwood floor made of industrial grade vinyl. The price was right and the product was gorgeous. This floor fools everyone. Barely a day goes by when someone doesn't ohhh and ahhh about our gorgeous wood floors - they have no idea they are actually vinyl sheets. To top all that off, we have needed Mertel twice since we opened. First, when our contractor accidentally sliced a portion of our floor doing an add-on. Instead of replacing a giant section (=$), Mertel found the actual small section of the wood pattern that was ruined and cut/ laid it into the floor perfectly. The second time, we needed a section of floor board replaced (again due to our own negligence) and this time the owner Jeff came out and fixed it himself, for free. He even brought us extra floor boards and glue, in case we ever need to do it again.
