For my second outing since the pandemic started in early March, I met a classmate at Mesler for a late lunch. Must say that they are taking every precaution necessary to maintain a clean setting. Since we went before I guess what would be a dinner crowd, we had no problems with seating. My classmate ordered a Cesar salad and had this "When Harry Met Sally" way of ordering. What came to the table was exactly what she wanted. I ordered a house salad with salmon and a lobster roll. I liked how flaky the salmon was. The salad could have used a little more vinaigrette. I solved that by asking for some more on the side. The lobster roll wasn't bad. It was better after I removed the slice of lettuce and pickles. The roll came with fries that had been fried to a perfect crisp without remnants of grease. Service was pretty good, given the lounge and dining areas had a sudden influx of customers. It's a nice dining spot on the New Hyde Park landscape. Perhaps when the pandemic eases up, I will return for dinner. read more

First off Maurice is hands down one of the best servers we have had in a long time! Extremely attentive, knowledgeable and pleasant! Now on to this food!!! 10's across the board. Taste, presentation, temperature and portions were all above expectation. We had the Seafood Pasta, the crispy chicken and mash potatoes and the 5th ward burger with bacon. The seafood pasta did not skimp on the seafood offering lots of lobster, crab, shrimp, scallops and mussels in an amazing white sauce with cherry tomatoes!!!! The chicken was juicy and crispy at the same time lol amazing taste and the mushrooms and mash potatoes covered in just the right amount of au jus were so flavorful! The burger is ALWAYS a hit! Perfect portion and slightly charred with an incredible sauce and pickles. The bacon was not soggy nor too crispy, just right! We asked to upcharge to make the fries that came with the burger truffle and Maurice obliged without hesitation and they were soooooo good paired with the the garlic aioli. For drinks we had the Laureate which is their Sir Davis cocktail and it was EVERYTHING!!! The Beyhive would be proud. :-) All in all definitely a 10 out of 10 and we can't wait to go back!!! I frequent Mesler because it's close and the best option for a drink or to get together with friends in Hyde Park. The decor is great! The food and drinks are average, nothing spectacular outside of their Old Fashion. That is amazing! However..... There are a couple of areas that need some improvement. SERVICE: Their overall service is so so. Could be a lot better. I'd give them a 6/10. My most recent visit, I was a bit irritated. When my check arrived I added a tip as usual do when I dine out, not realizing they automatically add a tip. I didn't consider this as it was only two of us. What made me look was when the waitress picked up the signed tab, she quickly walked away and didn't event say, "thank you." Almost as if to grab it before I realized I essentially gave her $50 tip on a $120 meal. I then looked at the receipt and realized I paid 20% tip on top of an 18% automatic gratuity. AREA FOR IMPROVEMENT IN SERVICE: can the servers let us know gratuity is included? TOO MANY FLIES AND BEES OUTSIDE: For some reason there are a ton of flies and bees on their outdoor patio. This happens every year during the hotter months. I've eaten on plenty of patios but Meslers is like a haven for insects. I don't have a solve for this, but it makes sitting outside extremely uncomfortable. read more

Wow, I'm so happy I tried to place! Mesler is located in the new Sophy Hotel in Hyde Park. We went on a Sunday during brunch hours. Street parking is free on Sundays so that was a plus. Our waitress was great and very attentive. The cocktails and food were delicious. The lobster roll was great with sizable pieces of lobster inside. The steak was cooked and came with a great gravy like sauce. We ordered a side of French toast but it would be great as a main entree as well. I'll definitely be visiting again. read more

I enjoyed every minute of this brunch experience! The atmosphere was perfect. Very comfortable & clean. I loved the little details like fresh flowers on each table. Those type of details make you smile Service was good! The food- EXCELLENT! Shrimp and grits are very tasty, be prepared for the slight heat of the andouille sausage. My husband enjoyed the buttermilk pancakes... I stole more off his plate than I'm willing to admit absolutely delicious.. melt in your mouth! My drink of choice - Lavender Lemondrop!! Sooo refreshing! I love all things lavender, so this was perfect to accompany my meal. I noticed they have live music on certain days as well. Give them a try if you haven't already. I would recommend at least 1 visit although I am not likely to return bc the bill was too steep for what we got and the menu is small. $171 for 2ppl which included only 1 meal, 1 drink flight and 3 appetizers. On a Tuesday at 5:30p we were able to be seated immediately without reservation. Initially we asked to be seated on the patio but it was too warm so the host gladly reseated us inside. The leather chair and carpet under my seat were visibly stained. I was afraid my white shirt would get ruined. There is no enforced dress code but I recommend business casual. The place is pretty big with super cute decor, furniture and chandeliers. The service was a 10/10, our waiter was a young black girl w/red hair who made suggestions w/o being asked. The margarita flight was extremely summer tasty but loaded w ice so there are about 4 sips in a glass. They could afford to add 4 to a flight. The corn bisque was sweet, no kernels, all purée, nothing memorable. The blue crab cake was juicy, much of the flavor came from the corn salad it's paired with. They definitely need to add one more cake bc one is not worth $34. The lobster roll was very tasty, standard size. The crispy PURPLE cauliflower was a fair portion size but the orange sauce had a burnt taste, should be substituted for a creamy garlic Parmesan. Automatic gratuity, POC. Street parking only. First - They don't take reservations over the phone. You have to sign up to some moronic service, give them your information and make a reservation. The website uses a captcha that is draconian and unlike what the person over the phone told me when I called the restaurant to make a reservation, it did not take few minutes to make the stupid reservation -it took a lot longer and had I not promised my niece who is a student to take her out for dinner, I would have certainly not made a reservation at all. Abysmal experience. I would not be surprised if these folks don't last too long in business. Second - Any place where they have the audacity to automatically add a gratuity on the final bill is, to me, a place to avoid. Gratuity is voluntary and is based on the performance of the wait staff. That the restaurant is not paying their people a living wage and hope to subsidize their cost of dong business by directly charging the customer is obnoxious, pretentious and frankly deceptive. Third - the service was abysmal. The person who served the water just poured the water splashing it up all over the table. It then took good amount of time before our waitress arrived. Took the order knew ver little detail about the food and we did j't press her. I ordered the steak and eggs rare and my companions ordered the turkey burger and teh beef burger. The first impression of the burgers was the amount of grease all over the food. The steak was almost properly cooked and did not taste anything special. The red wine sauce might as well have been a blob of melted sugar. The fries were fine and the scrambled eggs were runny--I know some places like it this way but if you are going to undercook the scrambled eggs, then you should say so. All in all, this is not an impressive operation. For the prices they charge, frankly, I rather go to a local diner--you'll get a better service and likely the same level of food products but at a better price and a service that is expected at that price. 3.5 overall. I appreciate the growing number of options in Hyde Park. Despite the cultural diversity, the food options sucked for many years. The Promontory kinda kicked off the elevated food scene and now more and more New American restaurants are popping up. Mesler serves above average eats. I've enjoyed breakfast and dinner. The omelets are particularly good. I enjoyed the flavor of my pancakes, but I'm almost certain they were reheated in the microwave. Overall a nice addition to the neighborhood. Staying couple nites at the SOPHY while getting a little work done at the university. First nite I tried the Skate and that was SERIOUSLY over salted couldn't finish it. Not certain if it was the breading or the caper sauce that made it too salty. The fish was excellent otherwise. Second meal was the Bavette steak-and crispy Brussels -ahh now this was a meal! Very nice and relaxing atmosphere! I loved the decor. The host was nice and so was my server. I order the Denver omelet without meat. The omelet isn't seasoned so I had to add salt/pepper and I wish my veggies were cooked a little longer because there were too crunchy for my taste. I also ordered the pancakes, which I was nervous about because the reviews varied. However, I thought the pancakes were the best I ever had in Chicago! Sometimes I just need a regular buttermilk pancake and not ones with all that razzle dazzle (e.g. cinnamon roll, cookies n cream pancake). You know a pancake is good if you can taste flavor before even adding extra butter and syrup. I don't know why someone said they tasted like box pancakes? That had to be a bad day. read more

We had dinner at Mesler in the Sophy Hyde Park hotel. The food, atmosphere and service were all excellent! The gem salad was a gem, the seafood with homemade pasta was honestly full of lobster, shrimp, mussels, and the Brussels sprouts were so tasty I could eat them every day. The art work is modern Art Deco (I think...I'm not an expert in that field). Small built-ins where you can grab a book or glance through one of their coffee table books. The food...not bad. I was with three of my friends and we ordered: Shrimp and grits Crab Benedict French toast An omelette Pancakes Watermelon martini - of course! We came on Sunday at noon and had a great experience. There were a few people at the host stand, everyone greeted us. Our server was Michael and he was great. Excellent food; terrible service. We were a party of six on a Thursday night in July. We ordered four apps for the table - the octopus special was a highlight. Among the entrees, seafood pasta and the burger stood out. The ambiance is great; the restaurant is well designed. Unfortunately the service did not hold up -- we finally got our full drink service an hour into the meal and only after alerting a manager. Despite this, the bill included a 20% gratuity and no compensation for the missed drinks. We all thought the food was terrific. It is a shame that the service could not keep pace. read more

Got a chance to check out this lovely place recently on a nice Sunday afternoon to cap off an awesome day with friends. Mesler is located in the lobby of the Sophy Hotel on the awesome strip of 53rd street. We made it over around 7pm and got a seat for 3 in the bar area. Once I walked in I saw nice art work, fireplace, nice seating in addition to the bar as well as a nice, diverse crowd. I started out with an old fashioned which was decent and then later moved onto a manhattan which was awesome. My friend told me the lobster roll was pretty good so I went with it. Very good lobster roll that included lettuce in which I've never seen on a roll at the places I've tried. The dish came with some very tasty fries. Dope spot for dates, friend outings or even rolling solo if you're comfy with that. read more

Mesler is an upscale restaurant located on the ground floor of the Sophy hotel in Hyde Park. The inside is so fancy and has really nice decor; in the summer, their patio seating is also beautiful. This is definitely one of Hyde Park's most upscale establishments, at least in terms of ambiance. I've been here for brunch on several occasions, and for dinner once. Their brunch is definitely worth the price. The Chicken & Waffles are always my go to item, and is their best entree in my opinion. Their chicken & waffles are unique because they use waffles perfectly glazed with pearl sugar; I've never tried this before, and it works so well with fried chicken. They also serve it with a "hot Fresno pepper jam" which also surprisingly perfectly complements the fried chicken/pearl sugar waffles. The one time I went for dinner, I ordered the House Made Turkey Burger. This tasted like a standard cafeteria Turkey Burger, and was way overpriced at $15. I would not recommend ordering this item. Overall, this place is pricey, but probably most worth it for brunch. It gets crowded really fast, so I would recommend making a reservation in advance. read more

Mesler for the win this summer Saturday evening. Let me first say our server Joshua was excellent! He was engaging and attentive! He helped me navigate the menu and provided a few suggestions as I was torn between the Italian rigatoni, the lobster roll, and the fifth Ward burger. Joshua shared that the pasta is made in house and dinner service is only a few days a week where the rigatoni is featured. He said I could get the other two anytime but not the rigatoni so I went with that. It was a good decision. I also have the mango margarita with the tajin around the rim. Can we say delicious. We all got that! My friend even had some mango slices in hers. The restaurant is open for service on Saturdays until 10 PM so that was great as a lot of other options due to Covid close at either 8PM or 9 PM in Hyde Park. read more
