I see that it has been more than 10 years since my last review so it is time for an update. We went here for a late lunch after attending an event at the American Airlines Center. There was a time when Meso Maya was the go-to for upscale Mexican in Dallas. The culinary scene in Dallas has changed so much that it is not longer the case. But the downtown Meso Maya remains an icon and continues to deliver consistently good food and service. The restaurant still has the warm ambience and remains in good condition even after all these years. It was too hot to sit on the patio so we ate indoors. The interior is smaller than I remember. The restaurant still starts you out with complimentary chips which are strips, and a smoky, spicy salsa. it was great. I started with the a mescal margarita and it was excellent. The kid had Topo Chico and the wife had Prosecco. Everyone enjoyed their drink. For entrees, the wife had her favorite, the vegetable budin, which is like a lasagna. The flavors were deep and rich. She loved it. I tried the carne tacos and they were excellent! The meat was tender and smoky. The beef had been marinated for a wonderful flavor. Good quality with no fat. I usually avoid ordering beef at restaurants because I often get more fat than meat which I detest, but not at Meso Maya. Our server Luis was very good. Present when we wanted and not when we did not. Overall, the restaurant was a hit on every level--ambience, service, and food. We like the downtown location the best and will return. read more

Another business trip to Dallas , another stop at my favorite "not Tex-Mex" authentic Mexican food restaurant. Today I went with the Carnitas Relleno. OMG. This was huge and full of flavor. First time visiting here. We started with margaritas and some ceviche as an appetizer. Off the chain to say the least on the ceviche!! For the main course, I ordered the seafood enchiladas and my wife had the Chile Relleno plate. Both dishes were delicious and enough, neither could finish it all. Service was top notch and overall I think the prices were fair based off the food quality and service along with the restaurant setting. The building and its sign are iconic when you're driving near Klyde Warren Park and the Perot in Dallas. The ambiance is lively and fun when you enter the restaurant's interior courtyard during the warm weather seasons. Every wait staff member that helped us was kind and helpful when choosing from the menu that was new to us. We really enjoyed the food. It is elevated Mexican and Mayan food. I absolutely love that they have food that has traces of ancient Mayan recipes and cooking styles instead of a typical modern Tex-Mex menu. It's a welcome deviation in the heart of Texas. The restaurant is within walking distance from a few hotels for visitors, or if you're local and want to do a staycation, it is a perfect area for that! read more

This may be one of the best Mexican restaurants in the Dallas area. We were having a mini vacation with the kids and decided to look around for places to eat. This is one of the ones that came up and we are so glad that we went. The food was amazing, the drinks were also superior to almost any other place. I've been. I was in town this past weekend for my birthday, and I'm so glad that I found this spot somehow! Even weeks prior to the trip, the team was incredibly helpful with helping me make a 14-person reservation (and super flexible as I had to make multiple changes to the reservation as well). There is a parking lot behind the restaurant that you can park at, and as of Oct. 2025 at least, they provide 2-hr parking validation so make sure to scan the QR code with the host before you pay for parking! As for the food, we split a few freshly made queso and guac combos across the table -- absolutely delicious and a great way to kick off the meal! The restaurant offers complimentary tortilla chips (and refills) and the chips also come with a complimentary homemade salsa if you don't want to order queso/guac for extra. I ordered the Ribeye Tacos, which came with perfectly seared ribeye, grilled veggies, and a creamy yet spicy green chile sauce on the side. The dish came with fresh white rice and black beans, which accompanied the tacos very well. I was truly impressed by the flavors in every bite, and I'm glad that nothing was overly salty either! If I lived here in Dallas, I'd definitely be coming back on a regular basis! We came here on a Thursday evening before heading to Thursdays on Tap at the Perot Museum, and it ended up being a great choice. We were seated immediately, and the overall experience was excellent from start to finish. We started with cocktails and queso. The cocktail menu had a great variety, and the drinks we ordered were both delicious and surprisingly strong. For our entrees, we had the cochinita pibil and the carne asada. The standout was definitely the cochinita pibil, it was shockingly good, full of flavor, and tasted incredibly authentic. The carne asada was also very well prepared and enjoyable. Heaping bowl of chips and delicious salsa that is served the second you sit down was much appreciated after our drive from Austin. We ordered the Steak Fajita and Seafood Poblano. Both dishes had ample amounts of food and generous portions of seafood and meat. The seafood poblano had a delicious sauce and the salmon, white fish and shrimp were accompanied by sauteed peppers and onions. Would definitely visit again on a future trip to Dallas. read more

Came for dinner and pretty disappointed. Took about 10 minutes for water and our server to come over. We got chips and queso and it was less than room temperate. We said something and they did bring a new one. We got avocado margaritas that were 85% ice. Our food came and my ribeye tacos were way over cooked, elote was bland, and Brussel sprouts were not worth the $2.50 up charge. Nice environment. We had a fairly large group and the staff was able to group us in a reasonable configuration. Noise level was moderate to loud around dinner time. I ordered Enchilada/Chicken and it was extremely tasty. I imagine competition for Mexican food in Dallas is stiff, but this place was great. They had a decent drink selection as well. It sits further to the edge of downtown, it is walkable, but probably more questionable towards later hours I presume. We took a short uber ride over there and it was simple to get to. Nice atmosphere. Eclectic choices. Great service. Meso Maya is appropriately named. This is traditional meso American cuisine. If you're looking for traditional TexMex there are several decent choices nearby, but Meso Maya is a more honest offering of central Mexican classics. I visited on a quiet Thursday afternoon for a late lunch. They have ample interior seating and a really lovely outdoor patio. A full bar offers up beer, wine, liquors and of course margaritas. I enjoyed their tortilla strips appetizer (not the common triangular chips, horizontal strips) and smoky sauce. I think the tortilla strips should be the default everywhere. I had a tortilla lunch of two chicken tortillas, white rice and beans. It was a bright flavor, fresh and very nice. I would have liked to see a combo meal offering, or an al-a-cart menu so I could have tried a bit of the tacos as well. If it was there I missed it. Important note. DO NOT PAY FOR PARKING!! We picked this spot after killing time at the aquarium before an evening flight out. We were just trying to escape the heat and there were 8 of us but they were so gracious and able to accommodate us quickly. Our waiter, Jose, was kind, attentive and patient. The food was delicious and they had a lot of different options. My three year old usually deconstructs all his cheeseburgers and almost never eats the bun but he devoured nearly the whole burger. A few minutes prior to 6:00 the waiter tried to tell us that Happy Hour was over, when that was not the case. The food was average, at best. Stopped at Mesa Maya on my own and sat at the busy bar, with others who were there alone. I got the cucumber margarita which was super refreshing. The salsa with the chips was smokey and spicy, I could only have a little bit wish I could have got some to go. I ordered the biggest meal they have, and I wasn't even that hungry. Great solid Tex Mex! They have validated parking you can scan once you enter the restaurant. This is the biggest perk as it is in downtown area. We got the soupa de Lima and caldo (both $15). The food was just ok. And that may be because I actually wanted to go next door to El Fenix. We were seated promptly on the patio but when the sun began to shift, our server would not move the umbrella. He suggested that we move our plates and drinks to the empty table with the umbrella.
