We had these Appetizers: fried green tomatoes, chicken fried bacon, fried pickles. None of it worth repeating. Fried pickles were OK but I prefer the pickle chips over the spears. All of the breading was too dark (over cooked maybe?) and lacked taste. I got the 1" ribeye. (Very good!) cooked perfectly with a lot of flavor. Salad. Avocado ranch dressing. This is one of our hometown favorites, so when we were back in town tonight for a funeral we stopped here. I got Chicken Fried Steak and I regret it. It was tough, unseasoned, and just generally unappealing. My husband had the catfish with fried shrimp on the side. The shrimp were way over battered. He was sooo happy with his catfish, though, so I am glad one of us got a good meal. If I had it to do over again...I would get a salad with ham; as the ranch is fantastic. We wore ally excited to try this place. We went for a birthday party and the whole back section was reserved for us. Service was amazing I can say that , the appetizers where good too. I ordered the three meat what really really disappointed me was the brisket IT WAS TERRIBLE! Dry dry dry!! The mashed potatoes were dry as well. This place considers themselves a BBQ restaurant, so I ordered my go to test meal for all such establishments: the 2 meat plate with sliced brisket and sausage. Hands down the worst brisket I've ever had. Seemed like it was just baked in an oven; No bark, absolutely zero seasoning, absolutely zero smokiness, dry as a paper towel. Even drenched in sauce couldn't help it. Sausage was a little better, but still severely lacking in flavor, and seemed obviously pre-packaged. Best things on the table were onion rings and mashed potatoes, as they at least had a touch of seasoning. Service was wonderful, but definitely will not return read more

This place is pretty amazing. We stopped by here on a trip through town not once but twice. When they say a three-meat sampler you'd think it would be a tiny bit of different meats but not here. You get giant portions of all three. I only had one meat and it was quite a hardy portion. The coleslaw was good and the potato salad was a creamy style which I really liked. You can also get cornbread and a roll with your order. On the second trip, I had the grilled catfish which was really good. The service was great and we got right in both times. Filet Mignon was very chewy and tough. I honestly do not think it was a true Filet. Grilled vegetables were delicious as was the ranch salad dressing, however the salad itself came out of bag as was the croutons. So disappointing especially because they boast about butchering their own meat. Roll and corn bread was not fresh either. Big Waste of Money. The service was fine and the margarita was good. Nicely decorated, felt comfortable as a bbq place should. We had a big party and they were able to accommodate us comfortably. All the staff we encountered were super nice, we felt at home. It was way past it prime and should have been thrown out 24 hours earlier. Absolutely worst suggestion she could have made, I've never see a well done Opposite of Prime Rib served before. We ordered the Armadillo eggs &this peppered stuffed delight was well described on the menu, along with this appetizer we all ordered various menu items, I had the Chicken fried steak which for the 1st time was almost as big as the plate, my mom ordered the New York steak and my husband had a Rib Eye and OMG the steaks and the fork kept ending up in n our mouths, and we couldn't stop! Arrived for lunch on a Saturday. Parking was ample and it appeared to be a slow period. I loved the Texas bbq atmosphere and the awesome smell of smoked meats as you walked in. I ordered the 2 meat combo ($12.99) of which I chose the ribs and smoked sausage with sides of onion rings and vegetable medley. My wife ordered the fried catfish and a baked potato (sorry, no pic of her food). Portions were BIG! One full link of smoked sausage cut up for you, and 3 nice size ribs covered with their own bbq sauce. The onion rings were awesome - some of the best I've had and the vegetable medley were steamed carrots, squash, broccoli and zucchini. Along with a big mason jar (about 30 ounces) of iced tea, everything was great. I'd definitely recommend this place if you're in the area and wouldn't hesitate to go back or bring visitors from out of town. read more

Worst food we have ever tried to eat!!! Nothing was cooked fresh. The food was definitely at least two days old we had catfish platter was unbelievably horrible!! My husband had grilled chicken. It came out as black and burnt as it possibly could have. Couldn't cut into it this was our first time to go there & definitely the last. The owner of this place must not ever ever eat there . Or either that they just don't care about the restaurant. I don't see how a place like that can stay in business. Never again!!! read more

Four of us walked in this place expecting amazing 24hr smoked bbq, but what we got was mediocre at best. The brisket was ok but slightly dry. The chopped brisket looked more like sloppy joe consistency. The sausage was plain and unremarkable - I do not recommend it. The armadillo eggs were tasty and onion rings were thinly breaded and crispy. I wouldnt recommend the pickle spears. The drinks were served in ball jars which was a nice touch. The service was quick though and we were seated immediately. The restaurant was country bbq - checkered table cloths and wood paneling on the walls and the atmosphere was cozy and laid back. The bathrooms were clean. They have a smoking section in this restaurant according to the hostess. In the day and age where no one wants to expose themselves to carcinogens that is just a no from me. read more

This place has some merit, but also some deficiencies. It's clean, has wonderful customer service, very good deserts, and very good prices. Nice place! The food, however, had some issues during my visit. The ribs were on-point...very good. However, the brisket was very dry, cut too thick, and flavorless. The BBQ sauce it was served with was also underwhelming. The sides, cole slaw and potato salad, were standard fair, similar to food from the deli section of the grocery store...nothing special. The rumor is that the steaks here are fantastic...probably that is the best thing to order. Otherwise, I recommend trying another place first unless these quality issues are rectified. read more

Great fried seafood! We went here with a large group (50) of people on a Thursday evening. The staff was ready for us, they were friendly and efficient. My wife and I shared a fried catfish meal and a fried shrimp meal. Both were great. Some of our friends had the ribeye steak and reported their meals as being very good as well. There are so many fried seafood places within an hour of here that the next time I visit Mesquite Pit, I'll have a steak and have my fried seafood elsewhere. I look forward to returning here next year. read more

Steamed veggies were still kind Of hard. A little more time on the steamer. We got a sampler plate and the fried green tomatoes and poppers were great.
