What a disappointment. The outside ambience and decor was super inviting, and this place has been around forever. But yikes! The meats are kept in Tupperware in a cooler and microwaved to order! What?!?! The red beans were served cold and were mostly soup, so salty they were inedible. The mac n cheese, though served warm was too salty to eat. Not a fan of Natty Flats. My brisket looked like pot roast. No smoke flavor at all. Pretty much tasteless. "Tater Salad" as they called it not hot or cold -- seemed like a cut up baked potato which in my opinion should have been hot. Beans with brisket (pot roast), temperature hot were just ok. I'd rate this BBQ place C+. It wasn't bad. I guess it's a passing grade, but lots of room for improvement. I'd passed by it many times and never realized there was a BBQ restaurant in the building. Thought it was just antiques and furniture and stuff until I saw it on Yelp. Service wasn't much as you order at the counter. They seemed nice enough though. The brisket was tender, but kind of dry and flavorless as there was no outer bark or visible fat at all. The sides were the typical "out of a can" taste. Mac and cheese was decent. The highlight was the vinegary "Carolina style" sauce on the condiment station. This place has the very best brisket and ribs. I'm really stuck on the chopped beef sandwich. Love the potato salad - it could be a meal by itself. Floats there are made with real ice cream and you pull your flavor out of a big trough of ice. All desserts are fresh made by the bakery across the parking lot. People are very friendly and there's shelves of some tasty old fashioned canned vegetables & pickles and more - all locally sourced. Very seldom have I been to a restaurant that has 5 star food. Because I feel the food must be absolutely incredible to rate 5 stars. But, when you combine a really neat restaurant, with a super friendly staff, and some dang good food, now that's worth 5 stars! Natty Flat checked every box for me. First, the restaurant is just as neat as it can be. You enter into the store front, where the shelves are lined with good stuff for you to buy. All sorts of candy and taffy, beef jerky, jams, jellies, spices, pickled veggies. You know what I'm talking about. Step up to the order counter in the back, and take your pick. They've got the full line of BBQ meats, but I'm a rib man, and what the heck, maybe throw in some jalapeño cheese sausage when I'm in the mood! This trip, I got me some ribs, baked beans with brisket, and loaded baked potato salad. The beans were good, the potato salad very good, and some really good ribs. I still can't eat much, so plenty of leftovers. Mike got his usual brisket, and said it was really good. Are we done? Nope! Dessert time! I got 5 orders of Pecan Cobbler to go, for Glenda, Linda, Susan, and 2 for me! Mike got the last cherry fried pie and 2 scoops of cherry vanilla ice cream. On my gosh, the cherry vanilla ice cream is incredible! We'll definitely get that again! AND, while your at Natty Flat, right next door is the Bent Bucket Bakery and Texas Hill Country Furniture. I was excited to try this place after reading the stellar reviews. No no no no no nope. The people were not warm or friendly at all. I usually flash a big smile, so no one can say it was my fault or that I had attitude. I was warm and happy. They were not. The pulled pork "small" sandwich and a coke was $10.28 of waste. It was not bad. It was not good. It was "meh" and the bun was cold and I had to smother it with salt and bbq sauce to get any flavor. Since it was not "bad" I didn't go to the manager. I just ate it. And the coke was warm and kinda flat. Look, it's a tourist trap, folks. It's built like a little frontier town for tourists. The biggest cedar rocking chair, outhouses, rustic misspelled signs, etc... tourist trap. Go elsewhere and get some real Texas BBQ. This is not good at all and I cannot figure out why the reviews are so good unless it is tourists who don't know better or locals who steer people there because they are locals. Or maybe they never traveled elsewhere in Texas for real BBQ. I write reviews to be brutally honest, positive or negative, because I want that from other people. I don't go here as much as I'd like to but I have been here a handful of times. The food and the atmosphere are always great. They give off a country home town vibe great choice of music in the background as well as amazing cold drinks in glass bottles. The option for toppings on the food is set up buffet style which allows you to get as many toppings as you'd like. They also have two different types of barbecue sauce on the tables. Always have nice people and good service on top of a clean building. This is probably one of my favorite places to eat when I'm in that area. Passed this restaurant on my way to work and decided to finally try it. I was so glad I did because it was fantastic. Ordered the sliced brisket sandwich, jalapeño cheese sausage, Mac and cheese, banana pudding, and peach cobbler. The brisket was so juicy! I have probably eaten here for at least 15 years when I used to ride my cycle. I remember when there used to be a leather shop next door and they made me a belt. The Bar b que was great then.
