We used to give Mess Hall 5 stars in its old location. What's changed? Prior location - more ambient space isolated from the road and cars. New space - open, little to no ambiance, right on the street prior location - music and entertainment. New space - none There's much more they could have done here. The food and drink are good. I'm hoping they do something to improve the overall experience. read more

Incredible food, I have come here multiple times but in my last visit they were celebrating an anniversary. They were doing a promotion where every 25th customer gets their meal for free and me and my friends were the 150th order. They always have fun things like that going on and the service is incredible. I could eat here everyday and die happy. We FINALLY got to visit where the line wasn't too crazy and we didn't have to wait an hour for our food. BUT, if you have to wait an hour - it's totally friggin worth it. Hidden snuggly inside the Alcove Beer Garden, it's the cutest place. I love how clean and simple it is with greenery and clean butcher block. The menu is adorable! It makes me want to order everything on it. You can order your foods and go sit in the Alcove and they'll drop it off to you while you wait - get a beer! I ordered the vegan smashburger and it was the most epic burger ever, LOVED IT. The only thing I didn't like was it got a little messy and I'm terrible at eating messy food. But it was worth it - everything went well together. Also, the tots... THE TOTS! I know it sounds crazy to love tots, but I will always get tots and they were cooked to perfection. Hubs got the chicken sandy and he was in love, he said the chicken was cooked perfectly. I've been wanting to try this place for a while. I got the old fashioned with bacon because the sauce description sounded delicious. You go in and order at the register then they bring your food to your table which is actually in The Alcove. You can grab drinks while you wait which is awesome. The music choices were great! The burger was hot , served wrapped in paper, easier to handle , it was juicy ! Loved that it was served in a paper wrapper and a paper "dish" , no foam plates , all recyclable. The burgers had those great crunchy edges, juicy , well seasoned, tasted wonderful. The lettuce was crisp, not soggy and limp, a plus! The tomato flavorful and those onion straws added a great crunch. The caramelized onions were done well, the mess sauce was not really noticed , nothing remarkable about it. The tater tots are out of this world, fried perfectly and seasoned well. Napkins are definitely needed for these burgers! This whole entire place, The Alcove, is pretty fabulous. Outdoors, beer, food, coffee, swings .... I mean come on!! I had their cheeseburger with tots and it was piping hot and very tasty. The place is a unique design for sure. It looks like an old mess hall dressed up and there are other businesses in the main area.... Beer and such. There is also an upstairs that I didn't visit. Burgers are better if you go thick (Third 3 ounce patty) but can't go wrong any which way u decide. They have a nice bar with a great beer selection right in the seating area and food (although on the slow side) is taken to tour table and hen ready. We were regulars at the original Mess Hall location the food at the old location was always well done and hot from the kitchen and really delicious Since they opened at the new spot we have eaten there 2 times and they have both been disappointing On Thursday 5/11 in the morning we stopped by for breakfast there were just a few customers in the restaurant it took a really long time to be served our food and it was ice cold and not cooked even the tots were cold! My vegan burger tasted like it was partially cooked and was totally mushy and cold my husbands breakfast burrito was cold as well How can a breakfast burrito with hot ingredients be cold? Answer is it was precooked I returned the burger and after a long wait it came out again and was cooked but flavorless not the delicious burger they used to serve! Who is cooking in this kitchen? It can't be the original staff and if it is there is something not right there Seems like the kitchen is pre cooking a lot of the food to meet the customer demand There are such few restaurants in Wilmington that are consistent and the Mess Hall was fun and delivered hot tasty food but unfortunately it isn't doing that anymore in the new location read more

Mess Hall! I wanted to love you! The space is amazing. We ordered burgers for takeout (maybe this is why it was a miss!). The buns were amazing, but the burger patties were so overcooked and overseasoned it was a real bummer. We've had smash burgers before that were SO amazing, so we're really disappointed when these didn't live up to our expectations.
