Warning, they do not answer their phone, but take online orders only using the Toast app. I had to use Google to find the link, new address, and place my order. I am unsure if this, the original Riverside location on Riverwalk Pkwy, is closed. Pro Tip: Open Thursday through Sunday, 1-7pm only. Well, this turned into a pleasant surprise. I had no idea there were any restaurants in this area, much less a Hampton Inn lurking nearby. It was making a delivery to Inn that led to spotting this Soul food spot. Inside it's a vibrant, inviting yellow themed front space and dining room. Very conducive to good moods. I decided that the mini combo, with one side and cornbread, was a good value at $13.99, whereas the full combo adds a second side and costs $17.99. Lots of choices, including several styles of chicken, the smothered pork chops both sounded, and looked good. I saw a plate being assembled before I ordered. And the oxtail also appealed. Future trips will expand the experience. Ultimately, it was the pot roast that I ordered, with rice (or not if you prefer), and the greens rounded out the side choice. My aunt was raving about this place, so I took the 2 1/2 hour drive to see. Upon arrival, I wasn't impressed. It's in a strip mall behind the gas station, but the hotel is within walking distance, and that's always a plus. I can't remember the young lady's name, but she had the patience of job. The service took a long time, but we came at the end of the day about an hour before closing. No one should come to soul food restaurant in a hurry. Soul food takes time and, it's supposed to be eaten with family and friends as catch up with each other. So, the wait didn't bother us. Out of all the sides, the mac and cheese was hands down the best. My least favorite were the greens. Overall, the food was delicious, fresh, and well-seasoned. You all have that part mastered, and I sincerely mean that! However, the lack of organization made the experience stressful. There seem to be too many ordering channels, and the kitchen struggles to keep up with fulfilling orders in a reasonable time. I waited an hour, even after placing my order online and receiving confirmation that it was ready. To improve the experience, I'd suggest limiting third-party delivery services like DoorDash and Uber Eats during peak hours, as those orders seem to slow down overall service. Adding catering orders to the mix only adds to the challenge. Most importantly, communication is key! A simple "We're out of that item" or "It'll be about 30 minutes until the next batch is ready" would go a long way. A quick "Thank you so much for your patience" can make a big difference. Also, managing the line better so staff knows what customers are waiting for would help. Again, you all have the food down. Cornbread is one of my favorites and I wasn't disappointed. A touch of sweet and a lot of corn flavor. I was a bit disappointed that they were out of meatloaf, which was the main reason I was there in the first place. I got a hot tip that there had been a meatloaf sighting in my whereabouts, so I had to seek it out. Next time Alex J, next time. The ladies running the restaurant are very nice. Like family.
