Had a lot of potential to be a chill spot for me. Its cute! Mon Ami does offers good drinks, crepes, and voodoo doughnuts. I just had a couple bad experiences ... The first time I went I just sat down to have my latte and they announced their "early closing" they did offer a free pastry but it was kind of awkward. Another time I visited during a rush hour. I order a crepe with the Nutella inside. After waiting for 30 mns they made my crepe plain :( I went back to ask her to remake it for me and she didn't believe I ordered it the way I did (she looked at me like a liar) and went through the receipts to see if I actually did order what I said, and sure enough it was written right there! This place is cute, but very small. It might seat a total of fifteen. As a result, if you have a group of four or so, you are frowned upon when you enter. Then the women who work there are quick to inform the potential customer they must leave shortly when they just got there. The coffee is sludge. Three of us ordered some, so I don't believe three out of three cups of sludge are a fluke...the coffee is just sludgy. Secondly, the crepes are spread thin so they take a lot of space, but they are akin to lace doilies in density. The fillings are barely there and there is no flavor. It may be cheap, but it tastes cheap. Between the disappointing food, the old oil coffee and the rude "get out" attitude so they can get in as many poor, unfortunate souls as possible to take advantage of, I say stay far, far away. read more

I truly and thoroughly enjoy leaving positive reviews for local businesses. Unfortunately I have to leave a lesser review for this quaint little shop and it breaks my heart to do so. I believe wholeheartedly in the local small business but sometimes people will support a place just because its not Starbucks or whatever. I held off writing this review because I kept going back hoping it would change my mind. After 5 separate visits on various days and times of the week, I'm afraid I just won't be going back. There's one thing that will turn me away from a business in a heartbeat: bad customer service. Please give me a reason not to go to Starbucks, I'm begging you! Each time I went to this shop, I had varying encounters at the register. Sometimes the person would make eye contact once and then none at all after, if I got a smile out of a person it was forced, and most of the time I had to initiate my own sales transaction. There's nothing like approaching the register at a coffee shop and getting an open mouth stare until you say something. Younger girl with glasses who brought my crepe to the table set tossed it onto the papers I was reading. It was 1:30pm in the afternoon, but she was quite concerned about cleaning up as she was closing the doors at 2pm. Also, this place now closes at 2pm on Sat/Sun. Crepe was mediocre. It was fine but definitely not special. I did like the small side of salad it came with. However, for all the praise about their crepes, I was quite disappointed with the limited selection of 6 to choose from. I don't find these crepes all that attractive, I don't really think you get your bang for your buck. I feel like the crepe was really skimpy and had just tons of whipped cream. I got the nutella and banana one which I thought would be really good but it just was really hard to finish because there wasn't much to it and it almost felt like a burden. When you get crepes the only reason you don't finish it should be because your full and there was way too much food. For me, I didn't think that was the case, I felt obligated to eat it because I spent so much money on it. I ordered a chai tea the other day from here because it's reasonably close to school. They must have put cinnamon in it or something enough to the point where it was undrinkable and chalk-y. They do serve stump town which is nice but I like River Maiden much better and they are both in Vancouver. read more

After reading about the rave reviews this place was getting in local Vancouver papers, I naturally I had to try it out. The place was surprisingly packed on a Wednesday morning at ten o'clock. Their specialty is their crepes, so I tried out their rasberry. After one bite I knew I was in for a treat. I laid the smack to that thing like I was Lard Ass in 'Stand By Me'. This place has a great ambiance and a cozy feeling to it. They serve Stumptown coffee and have an assortment of beer and wine as well as a soup of the day. Two and half stars wasn't an option. I would describe it as marginal. I appreciate that they have gluten free options, but I found their batter to be blah, dry and skimpy in the filling department. Seating is limited and I am glad that I wasn't there on a Saturday morning. My husband and I have been to a lot of creperies and we both agree that these were two of the worse crepes we've had. They are made of buckwheat which makes them very dry and they fall apart easily...this isn't so bad in itself....but the insides were so dry that it was hard to swallow and to keep a bite together. I had the vegetarian crepe with spinach, tomato and brie. It really needed more moisture and flavor, such as some caramelized onions or some kind of spread. The service was also incredibly slow (over 30 minutes for crepes). Our friend went up twice to ask if his daughter's order was ready so she could eat. The coffee was fine. Seating was a little odd/difficult to get a table to eat at so I had my plate in my lap. It was also a bit cold. read more

I had a lovely lunch here prior to a meeting. This place is French oriented. They savory and sweet crepes. My crepe was made from buckwheat. It was tasty. Although this place is listed as inexpensive, the food is very good and the portions big enough without being too big. Glad I stopped. I will come again for a good lunch. read more

Often disappointing. This place nails it on local&organic ingredients and community involvement, but really misses the mark on a lot of the basics. It feels very unclean-including having poor air circulation that makes the place smell musty- orders can take ridiculously long, despite not being very busy and appearing to have a lot of people working. Orders are often wrong. They advertise Stumptown coffee, but serve it at about half-strength. I've been here probably 5 times and I won't be back again. read more

My friends coffee was out of this world while mine was not up to par. The atmosphere more than made up for it.

Stopped here for coffee and a crepe. The ambiance is typical hipster coffee house, complete with mismatched chairs and questionable local artwork. Staff was friendly, service was fast. Got the nutella, raspberry and bacon crepe and I so wanted to like it. Instead, it was sickly sweet without enough salty bacon bite or tart raspberry flavors to cut the nutella. On the plus side, the crepe itself was tender and well cooked. Coffee was also slightly bitter, IMHO, but definitely drinkable. I came here for lunch the other day. I ordered a coffee and a BLT crepe and was pretty disappointed. The service was alright, but the food just wasn't that great. They were pretty skimpy on the cheese and real heavy on the crepe. I had to peal off the top later of the crepe so that I could actually taste the bacon and cheese inside. For $7.50, I really felt like they were trying to cheap me out of the main ingredients to increase their profit margin. But even without the top layer, the crepe was still pretty bland tasting. The coffee was good too, but because they use a french press there is lots of residue on the bottom of the cup, which makes the last sip fairly unpleasant. Definitely overpriced. read more

Very good speed and quality. The only thing holding me back from five stars is that the lattes are occasionally more bitter than I would prefer--as if the shots are pulled too long. The staff is always friendly and attentive. The rotating artwork features professional and amateur painters, photos, ceramics and hand-drawn pieces, and is usually interesting. While the music is usually fine, it's at times too loud (an annoyingly common coffeehouse sin these days). Mon Ami has been a steady presence on an ever-improving Upper Main Street, and I always look forward to bringing my son here for great hot chocolates. read more
