Joe Brown's has a fascinating history, starting as a soup kitchen during the great depression, and is the oldest restaurant in Vancouver to date. Took 45 minutes to get our orders (me and two of my friends) got both of our orders wrong. I got a small scarping of scrambled eggs while my friend got three times more even tho wr ordered the same thing. A long-term staple of downtown Vancouver. Exactly what you would want in a diner... an undeniable vibe that screams retro with photos all around. For as small of a dinner that it is, they usually don't have much of a wait, especially if you're willing to sit at the bar. The staff is extremely friendly, quick to provide coffee and take orders. They are never lacking for a smile. Really wish the food was as good as the rest of the experience. We've been multiple times and it is just mediocre at best. I'm a junkie for a good breakfast. Ham, eggs, and good hash browns will slap my butt and put a smile on my face... however, tasteless food just doesn't really make the cut. We've tried everything from sausage, ham, and bacon to biscuits and gravy, and even their lunch foods. Every time our response is the same, "meh". A little seasoning goes a long way. We went to this place for a Saturday brunch and I really love their ambience. It's very old school ambience with black, gold, mint green interiors. Service was amazing, the staff were very polite, nice and friendly. Food: We ordered breakfast items like scrambled eggs, hash browns, toast, french toast, omelette. This place is old school! Cute diner, everything you remember from your younger years and want in a diner, just with modern day prices. So beware of that, the prices are high! But the portions are large. You won't leave here hungry. It is quite small inside, so maybe not the best if you're trying to go out to eat with a party bigger than 4. But service was very friendly and attentive. And food was delicious. At the prices and portions, I was easily able to split my breakfast with my kiddo to make it feel more reasonable, and we still walked out with leftovers in hand. It feels like the diners you see in the movies with the kindest servers, the constant coffee refills, yummy burgers, delicious breakfast. The service was quick and so kind! We tried the: * mushroom Swiss burger- this burger was cooked very well, they did not skimp on the veggies (so many pickles yum!!!), and they had condiments you could add yourself. The mushrooms were cooked perfectly, and the Swiss tasted sooo bold and delicious with the mushroom combo. Would recommend! * chili burger- this was more of a plate of chili with a side of burger haha, it was messy to eat but tasty. The chili is not anything special, but warm and delicious chili as expected. * December special (polish sausage scramble with spinach, tomato, Swiss cheese, hashbrowns, toast)- a good combo of flavors and textures. The Swiss cheese made the dish! * 1/2 veggie omelet- so big for being a 1/2 size! This was a classic diner omelet experience, very fulfilling. Veggies were cooked well, it was cheesy,and there were hot sauce options on the table to choose from. Important to note that there were GF options for bread for the side of toast as well as the sandwiches!! I visited Joe Brown's Cafe for the 4th time this morning. It was quickly becoming one of my favorite places to stop for grub after delivering in Portland. I live in Tacoma and drive for a living, and I like to find really good places to eat and become a regular but that all ended this morning. I've always felt welcomed at Joe Brown's and even though I have to pay for parking to visit, the food has always been worth it. Today however, I was turned off from ever returning and it wasn't the food that caused my feelings. I parked just outside of the greasy spoon and paid my $2.60 for parking. I then went inside where they do not have any signs that state either seat yourself or please wait to be seated but I stood there out of respect, waiting for a bit of direction. One of the guys in the back near the kitchen waved at me and gestured to go ahead and sit wherever I wanted and so with that prompt, I took a booth near the window. While the guy who had motioned for me to sit wherever brought over a nice tall glass of ice water for me, the young waitress stepped up and informed me that I would not be allowed to sit in the booth I had chosen because I was alone and she wanted to keep it available for parties of 2 or more. It was a Tuesday morning at roughly 10:00am and the place had more than enough seating available but I obliged. I did however make a comment along the lines of "so much for first come first served" and that rubbed my waitress the wrong way. I then opted for a smaller, table for two directly in the middle of the tiny restaurant and began to look over my menu. I waited for what seemed like a very long time before she came back to take my order and after I had confirmed that yes, all I want is the Texas specialty omelet, she replied to me with "GOOD"! She didn't ask me what kind of toast I would like and therefore, I assumed, (my mistake) that my omelet would be sans bread and potatoes. Well, it wasn't. When I received my breakfast, it came with a side of hash browns and some sort of toast that I had no option in deciding for. I later took out my phone and looked up the menu to read that I should have ordered my omelet ala cart and for that I take responsibility as well even though, I still remember my last visit where I had to ask for the toast and potatoes, but I digress. Because I am now abstaining from carbs, I finished off just the omelet but then felt ignored because of the amount of food still on my plate. When the waitress finally came around again to ask if I needed a takeout box, I was finished and ready to go. She informed me that she would get my bill but returned a few moments later stating that their system was down. I had planned on paying cash from the beginning but what if all I had, had been a debit card? Would I have been stranded there waiting for some system to come back online? The waitress took my cash and returned with my change but did not bring me a receipt. My usual $12.99 meal has now been inflated to $17.99 with tax plus coffee so with tip, my whole breakfast came to $23.00! FOR ONE OMELET and a cup of coffee!!! I'm done! I've already stopped frequenting a lot of establishments and after this morning, I will no longer visit Joe Brown's Cafe! Terrible service, very high prices and neither of which does the food make up for! Too bad too because I can actually have that omelet ala carte on my carnivore lifestyle. This place is the best diner I've ever been to. I walked by multiple times to see folks waiting outside before they opened and it's easy to see why. The food's exactly what you'd expect: delicious, generous portions, and affordable. I really like the coffee and the hashbrowns are top tier. The staff're all friendly and accommodating. It can get a lil cramped inside if you don't manage to nab a booth and the decor's outdated, but that's what I expect from a diner.
