The food is good and fresh. The price is right. The service is good. Very kind and respectful, but the waitresses do seem a bit off. Like they've lost all joy in life. I don't say that as a stab at them but it's more me feeling bad, they just seem dead inside. The ambiance is pretty outdated, they're going for a homey diner feel but it just kind of feels like a geriatric facility. Their clientele reflects this, lots of geezers complaining and coughing up a lung. For clarity, this review does not reflect the food. The food is good. With mixed reviews I wasn't sure if I should give this place a try but Dad had been here before and as it's his birthday, off we went. It's a cute little restaurant. Maybe a dozen or more booths and a counter. There were a few table occupied; on a Monday morning it was mostly friends enjoying a chat over breakfast. Seat yourself. Waitress came over shortly with menus and asked if we wanted coffee. I asked if they had pots for hot water for tea. I was told yes and did I want tea, or just the water. I selected a black tea and settled in to check out the menu. When she brought the coffees and my tea, it was a mug of tea, not a pot. Oh well, I can have another cup back at dads. She included a packet of honey along with the little individual plastic cups of cream. Nice touch. We all got an order of eggs with different sides. Mine was sliced corned beef. The eggs were cooked nicely 'over easy'. I substituted an english muffin for toast. It was a bit well done, and the waitress asked if it was 'OK', she didn't just leave it, hoping I didn't say anything. It was still warm and the butter was room temp and melted nicely so I was happy with that. I was surprised the corned beef was not at all salty, which is the nature of corned beef. Actually none of the food seemed to be seasoned with salt or pepper. This is actually great because there are plenty of folks on low sodium diets and others don't like pepper. Makes sense to me, S&P are on the table. We asked for some hot sauce too because my SO puts that on pretty much everything. (Except ice cream. Haven't seen that yet.) Everyone seemed happy with their meals. It's eggs, bacon, home fries, (oh, these are either cooked on the grill or you can have them deep fried to be crispy), hash, toast. Pretty basic breakfast fare. The staff were very pleasant and did a good job. No complaints, except maybe the booths are a bit tight to sit two adults side by side, but I like my husband, so we were fine. If you are looking for bacon and eggs, this place is fine. read more

Well I wanted to have stuffed peppers for lunch and this was disgusting peppers were mushy the rice completely over cooked, the ground beef no taste. I just didn't like it at all. I make better stuffed peppers than this!! That's what I get for being lazy and not making them myself!!! I will NOT be back for lunch at all. This place needs to be completely renovated it's definitely stuck in the 70's and 80's the window sills are dusty and dirty. Needs new menu too!!! Modern please. The House Omelette was stuffed with lots of feta & tomatoes (messy), the home fries were soft (okay), and the wheat toast was buttered. The hot coffee (New England Coffee) was not too strong. First a caveat.....This may be a review that has little relevance today since my experience at the Methuen Family Restaurant took place in 2011. We Stopped in for dinner. Ordered a chicken dinner. When the dinner arrived the chicken appeared to be something you'd forgot to toss from your fridge but I thought let me give it a try. That's all I needed to confirm my original thoughts. So I called over the waitress and told her It was unacceptable, she said, to my amazment ,that since I already took a bite that she couldn't take it back. It's a perfectly fine restaurant that's been around for years based off feeding lots of locals with cheaper prices. It's pretty much a slightly more fancy diner. You're not getting gourmet food here, but there are several menu options that are very good. Go with any of the burgers, liver and onions, or any breakfast dish. The pancakes and waffles are great and you can get a lumberjack slam for under 8 bucks. The portions are huge for the money and they offer daily specials. It's clean and the waitstaff friendly. Bonus for being open 6 am to 9 pm, seven days a week with breakfast available all day. Decent, very clean and extremely affordable old-school family restaurant with exceptionally convenient hours (most places in the Valley where you can get eggs close at 2 p.m. This place, I believe, stays open through dinner, until 9 o'clock. The food, while consistently well-prepared, is generally nothing special. They don't even have cheddar cheese, if that tells you anything. When I'm there, it's mostly a burger and fries, though I've occasionally tried a special or an omelet, and have had no complaints. Once in a while they'll have the Greek specialty chicken avagolemono (sp?) soup (similar in consistency to egg-drop soup, but with chicken (rather than egg) and a slight hint of lemon. I'm not doing it justice: It is absolutely terrific. Staff is friendly though not particularly solicitous and, unless you're at the counter, the wait for a second cup of coffee can take a while. Most waitresses are well past their child-bearing years, FWIW. Still, the place has a lot of locals -- including the former acting chief of police -- and, as I mentioned, the value is exceptional. Plus, there's always a house copy of the Boston Herald around. If my dad were still alive and lived here, this is where I'd take him a couple times a week, anyway. This was my first time at the Methuen Family Restaurant and from the moment I walked in I was treated so kindly. The woman who greeted me was so welcoming and I was thrilled to have an old school, fresh, yummy homemade BLT, veggie soup and grape nut pudding with real whip cream. Everything was so good and the BLT was so fresh, with marble rye, red ripe tomatoes, a side of crunchy crispy french fries and a little side of coleslaw. The veggie soup was so flavorful and it came with some rolls, butter and crackers. Everything was awesome and I think it was $11 total. I couldn't believe it, such a good price and excellent value. I will admit that once you go in, you see a lot of elderly patrons. But don't let them stop you from dining there. I went today with a coworker. We went around noon. It was not busy and there was plenty of parking and seats. We grabbed a booth and were greeted right away. I had an open faced reuben with the works and a side of fries. She had french toast with bacon and we split a side of potato skins. Food came within 10 minutes and the servings were huge! The potato skins were perfect and my reuben was the best that I've ever had. I never finished my meal. It was too much food. We spent $30 (including tip). We will definitely dine here again. Well what can I say. Use to be my favorite restaurant 15 years ago. Came in from out of town for a funeral and wanted some comfort food. Came to Methuen Family Restaurant Thursday at 7 pm to be told that we can not order any soup or any food made in a deep fryer with no explanation why. Odd since they say they are open to nine. When asked for alternative sides the rude waitress said the only side available with any meal was home fries or fruit. Perhaps the owners should put a sign on the door informing folks of this. While sitting in the restaurant some senior citizens walked in and attempted to eat. The waitress Paola told them they were closed when the lady mentioned the hours on the door said 9 she responded with dont know what to tell you and treated the lady like she was scum for walking in to an open restaurant. After not receiving the food we ordered we asked for a discount on the bill for the cost of the food that we didn't receive the waitress told us she could not take the money off for something she didn't give us told us no manager was available and that she was the only one we are able to speak to. I hope the owner manager reads this and gets rid of the rude bitch. I will call tomorrow and attempt to reach the owner or the manager. The one star is only so I could post a review. Again thanks for ruining my meal and assaulting some senior citizens. Received response to my concerns on there Facebook page someone from the dump said we could have had several different sides which was a LIE THE WAITRESS SAID fruit only. Staff constantly lies and does whatever they want and then blames the customer for everything. It's somewhat difficult to assign stars to a restaurant based on any one dish alone. I've also found that the truly memorable dishes in my memory very rarely come from the best overall restaurants. For example, I always though that the absolute best homefries anywhere came from the Airport Diner in Shirley, MA, even though over all they were only "not bad" (which in my parlance is something just better than mediocre). On to my review of Methuen Family Restaurant: I got their liver and onions, and it was honestly the best I've had yet - and I've gotten that dish at many spots in all the different states I've lived in. For this dish, I'd want to give 6 stars, but one dish does not a rating make. The previous number 1 had been the Hamilton Restaurant in Carlisle, PA . My wife got 2 eggs over easy with homefries, hash and sausage (and only the sausage was memorable - excellent sausage!). The eggs were fine. The homefries just a little too soft. The coffee was definitely on the mild side. Maybe, I'll need to edit my review later, if the sandwiches wow me. The (very nice) waitress did say that they slice their own roast beef to order ("it's not cold cuts"). In which case, maybe they'll earn 4 stars. I'll just circumnavigate the breakfasty items. This has always been my favorite breakfast/diner place. Never had a bad meal until today when my scrambled eggs werent cooked. I did not eat them and our waitress did not ask me if we enjoyed our food so i was not given the chance to send them back. When i got home i called to let them know and was laughed at. Given the selection, I thought it was slightly over priced. The service ranges from being excellent at time to none-existent. I had to wait or go to the counter.
