Mechanics are honest, don't overcharge, and in my case, actually undercharged me the last time I was in. They only charged me for 1/2 an hour of work, $80, even though two different mechanics had looked at it multiple times to try to identify a slight rattling noise. They said it is not a safety issue, they will look again the next time I get an oil change, and if it gets worse they will be able to identify and fix it but as it isn't a safety issue they don't want me to put money in it unnecessarily at this time. They did let me know of some repairs I will need in the next year. I never feel like anyone there talks to me differently or charges me differently for being a woman, which is a stereotype you hear about mechanics (though honestly I've dealt with that more with HVAC techs, but I digress). When I dropped my car off on a thursday evening for a friday appointment, Rich called me back an hour later just to let me know he had looked at it already and didn't think it was anything to be concerned about but would do more work in the morning, which i really appreciated. When I was leaving after picking up my car I spoke to a woman who had been going here for, I think 15 years and said Rich takes great care of her antique car. The only other thing I'll add is the store has stickers on the door in support of gay rights and BLM, which you just don't see at mechanic shops, and I feel good about supporting a shop that supports my values. My assumption is the stickers signify all customers are welcome and will be treated fairly, which maybe isn't always the case in mostly straight white male-owned spaces.

Ben took my call and kept me calm and focused while we tried to figure out what exactly was going on with my suv. After a few minutes on the phone we thought it was best to have it towed to the nearest shop a few miles away (by the way, this was an evening/after hours call). Ben helped get me a tow and offered to send me a car to be driven home. I opted to walk down the street to a local restaurant to take advantage of my stranded situation (that's an entirely different story). Back to my review. The next morning the Nielsen team helped me understand what was going on with my suv, the options available to me, and provided a detailed break down of the costs associated with the five years of neglect and work needed to be sone to my suv. The number was a big number but there is a cost associated with having skilled technicians on staff to do the work and do it right. I was ok with this and they were kind enough to work with me on the price. Through the entire process, Ben and his team kept me in the loop at all stages of the service, until my car suv was ready for pick up. I recommend anyone looking for a hard-working, honest team to service your car or SUV to look no further than Ben Nielsen at any of his locations. My wife and I often use one of their locations in Alexandria on Colvin street because it's closer to home, but when my Audi broke down, skyline became the best option. Sometimes the work is fine and sometimes its not. Too often I drive out with a new problem that I did not have before. A year ago this happened with the Steering Gear Box, which started making a grinding noise as soon as I left the lot. I had to bring it back and pay for a new one. Today, I brought it in for a few minor issues and an inspection and oil change. I also asked them to look at the rear end because I was sometimes experiencing a light "clunk" when I would drive over bumps. They told me the rear differential was making that noise. It seemed odd to me that the rear differential would be the cause. So I told them it was not a big enough issue at the moment to justify $3,000 for a new rear differential. I drove it home and - voila - the rear differential is now making a grinding noise (it was not before). The clunk is still there, but that is not on them. I am not going back because I never know if I am going to drive out with more problems than I came in with.

I cannot say enough good things about Pentagon Liberty Auto Repair and their incrediably friendly, professional staff, whether those individuals be the cashiers, or mechanics. And the reason I say this is because I had a number of issues with my Mazda 3, one of them being the tires, that had taken a beating while driving through the streets of DC/POHOLE CITY! And addition to the tires, there were also some pretty serious issues with the breaks on my car. Needless to say, these fine gents not only beat out their competitors when pricing out parts and labor, but were also extremely professional as well as very kind. Especially given the fact that I was a "few dollars short" the day I was to pick up my car. Yet they still completed all the work, while also allowing me an extra day to cough up the rest of the coins! Which is quite unheard of this day and age! LOL! I also live two blocks up the street which easily allows me to give most of my business when filling up the tank with gas at least once a week. I would also like to add one more reason as to why I now have such a deep appreciation for this fine business establishment, which I realize may or may not make all that much sense to some of you.... Anyway, the reason I'm so appreciatve to all of those wonderful folks is because approximately four years ago, I was diagnosed with Stage Four Non Hodgkins Lymphoma, as well as Stage two bone marrow, AND Stage Four Brain cancer, while also given barely a 10% chance of survival. (Please Google Brent Troy David Cancer Survivor, if in doubt..!) Needless to say, I beat the odds! (Either that, or this is all some creepy ass joke! hahah!) It was also at that time that I had numerous issues with my Mazda, which was the last thing I needed to contend with. Yet in spite of all of my health issues, Honest Tom actually contributed in making my life a bit more tolerable, as they REALLY did go the extra mile to ensure that their customer service, hence sales and labor, were more than just adequate, but rather extremely exemplifier. I would also recommend to anybody that's in the area to purchase their gas from Pentagon Liberty! If for no other reason that to be greeted by their extremely friendly cashiers! Especially the young lady who usually works the morning/afternoon shift. Who might I also add is not only blessed with such an incrediable personality, but also with the most beautiful smile! And some very lovely curves too! All respectuflly meant and said of course....... And who also LOVES HOMEMADE CARROT CAKE! Esepcially my Granny's recipie! And just between you and me, she is constantly begging me to marry her, while also offering me a lifetime of free gasoline should I accept her hand in marriage...... Okay fine... Perhaps NOT so much to the marriage thing...... ;-) But she truly is an extremely adorable young lady with again, a wonderful smile! And as far as I go? Well I only THINK that I am adorable and young! Well that's assuming your are in your 80's or 90's.... I read all the favorable reviews for this place before deciding to take my car there for a state inspection and oil change this morning, and I can honestly say that the high reviews are all true and well-deserved. As a woman, I've always been a bit wary about trusting mechanics, but from the moment I pulled up to Liberty, I was greeted with kindness, courtesy and respect by Yusef, who then led me inside to speak with Ricardo for my services. Ricardo was absolutely kind and courteous as well, and since it was pouring rain outside, offered to have me driven to the metro. It was Yusef who took time away from the service shop to drive me to the metro, and was absolutely professional and courteous the entire time. He assured me that my car would be in good hands, and even said he would do a bumper-to-bumper check for free to ensure that everything was running fine. When I returned later to pick up my car later that evening, I was greeted by a smiling Ricardo (who was working way past his regular hours, but as he said, "When you love what you do, it doesn't feel like work"), and was personally greeted by the manager Hadi, who was just as kind and courteous as everyone else I had met there. When I got the bill, I couldn't believe how low the price was! The last time I changed my oil and got a state inspection at another retail-chain service center, I paid over 3 times as much. This place has certainly earned my loyalty and appreciation. They possess such a high level of integrity in everything they do, and they make you feel like you're part of their "family" from the moment you pull up to their store. My review has not much to do with just this shop, but with the people who work there. After really thinking though I have decided to write my experience here. I am a girl and when it comes to cars I do not know much so I tried to find best shop in the area by searching for reviews. When I first came in I was impressed by Ricardo, the way he talks, it seemed he knew what he was talking about. I need to say I give him credit for selling himself. But I felt so humiliated afterwards. He said he is the owner, later I was actually introduced to a real owner Hadi who is btw very nice. I didn't give too much attention to this. Ricardo took all my information, including phone number. He followed up, but every time he would mention something like how woman like me deserves the best. Again I didn't pay too much attention to it. When I picked my car up I was asked to leave a good review on Yelp for him. I I did not have a Yelp account. Later I started getting text messages from him to remind me to write review, he started flirting and asking me out. I am married and wear my ring! When I leave my number I am hoping it is just for business purpose. So I finally decided to leave my review. I don't want to come back there anymore, I didn't feel respected. Now when I see all these reviews ( from women ) I kind of know why they are here. I respect the shop and the owner but they should think who they hire for their business. read more

I will never go anywhere else to get my car serviced again! This place came recommended to me by a friend who said they did great work and never tried to swindle her or up sell her. I came in to get my side mirror replaced, and Ricardo exceeded my expectations. What would have cost $500 + at the dealer cost me less than $200- which Ricardo was actually mad about, because that price came from the dealer selling me a whole part instead of just the mirror I needed- I on the other hand was just happy for the lower cost, the quick and excellent service, and the pleasant conversations I had with Ricardo and the mechanics. The best way I can describe Ricardo is genuine, which is so rare. He truly wants to give you the best deal and have you pay only what is reasonable/for what you need. I highly recommend, especially as a woman- pentagon liberty will NOT try to swindle you or make you feel intimidated based on gender the way other places can. Excellent excellent service. Everyone I have encountered at Pentagon Liberty is incredibly friendly and helpful, especially Ricardo. I brought my car in for an oil change, new headlight, and a distressing rattling noise. After briefly describing it, Ricardo was immediately able to tell me what the problem was and had a simple solution. Unfortunately, he also discovered that a number of other parts on my car were worn out and needed to be replaced. Given how infrequently I am able to bring my car in for servicing (and the fact that it is 16 years old) I trusted his judgement completely. He called me before he made any repairs, explained each issue and how important (or not) it was to have it replaced. I found this incredibly helpful as I could pick and choose the most necessary fixes and leave the lower priorities for a later visit. Ricardo even replaced my headlight free of charge. I've been meaning to write a review for these guys for years. They go above and beyond every time. I don't know a lot about cars but they've always been upfront about what repairs may be upcoming due to having an older car and potential costs, never any pressure to get them done through them. But I always do, because they are the best around. But here is the kicker. I was once in a minor collision that resulted in messed up paint on my bumper. I tried to clean it myself but to no avail. I took it to a body shop I'd used previously and they quoted me $600 for repair. I brought my car in for regular maintenance to Pentagon Liberty and took it home as usual. It wasn't until the next day when walking out to my car that I realized the bumper looked perfect again. They fixed the whole thing without mentioning anything and never charged me a cent. Truly incredible service. Be warned they get super busy on weekends! Get there when they open on Saturdays or try and drop off during the week. read more

Bottom Line... Great place! High quality repair work. No BS. Good prices. No scams. More Details... I have been to a bunch of auto repair shops that tried to rip me off or sell me on a lot of extra work that I didn't need. It's hard to find a quality place, but this repair shop is great! It's like a "neighborhood" shop so they treat you like a person and not just a job. Ask for Ricardo and he'll help you out...He's knowledgeable, fair, and will tell you what you ACTUALLY need or what's coming up for future service. Not pushy or scammy. The prices are really good, especially for the high quality work they do. (If you know anything about working on cars you'll see this right away.) My Lexus IS 250 started making a concerning loud noise. I knew I had to take it in and have it checked out. Luckily, Pentagon Liberty is Just right up the street from my house. I was greeted by Ricardo, who was very professional and seemed very passionate about his work. I mentioned I needed a full diagnostic exam but unfortunately was in a time crunch. To my surprise, both him and his employees went above and beyond their way to accommodate me and my needs pertaining to my car. Within an hour, Ricardo wrote a list for me with everything my car needed to have done. The Pentagon Liberty staff and management have provided the highest quality garage service I have experienced in Northern Virginia for the past 31 years. The friendliness and courtesy shown to the customer, the attention to detail, and their practice in checking and evaluation all systems and components related to the main problem complaints, make their service the best for the cost. They fully document any work done in a line-item format, as well as recording all costs to the customer. This is how the tune-up, battery and alternator installation, and emission-control repairs on my 2012 Jeep were handled. Furthermore, after all of that work had been done, my car wouldn't start. they discovered a defective battery and starter problems, then repaired them - free of charge! They remained friendly and professional through out the ordeal. They are the best! read more

After a state inspection I was told I needed my rear brake pads replaced and my front sway bar fixed. I brought my car to Ricardo and after looking it over himself he told me I didn't need to worry about my front sway bar just yet. He also took the time to explain to me why my rear brake pads and rotors needed to be replaced, not just the pads. He saved me money, took time to explain everything to me in a kind way, and definitely earned my trust. He even spent extra time to remove some paint scratches from my car free of charge. The entire experience from beginning to end was amazing and I will definitely be bringing my car back to him whenever I need work done. Everyone I spoke to on staff was super friendly too! I have to admit I passed this place many times and never considered going there but one day I was in a pinch with a flat tire and it was raining. The service manager there Ricardo was kind enough to help me put on my spare with no cost. I came back two weeks later to actually buy a tire and he was super helpful in making sure I got the tire installed. However, Ricardo went above and beyond noticing that my subwoofer box wasn't screwed in and wired incorrectly. He helped me screw in my box, properly wire the subwoofer to the fuse box, and even soldering my sub cables so they wouldn't fall loose again. With no charge! Talk about excellent customer service! I can say with 100% confidence this has been the best customer service I have experienced from a mechanic my entire life. read more

This is the best business I have ever dealt with in my entire life, not even joking. They do great work, cheap, fast, and HONEST. Some other shop told me I needed 1000 bucks to replace my struts. Brought my car in to get a complete checkup and Ricardo said the checkup would be 50/60 bucks can't remember, but would be deducted from work they did. Turns out struts were fine, everything was fine, and he didn't want to charge for the inspection, because "Why would I charge you if we didn't find anything wrong" I kept asking to give him something and he just smiled and said he wouldn't be able to sleep at night if he took it. As a woman who knows nothing about cars, it is intimidating to have to get an inspection or get service. I first went to Pentagon Liberty in 2014 when I needed an inspection. Since then, I have gone back to them every time I have needed to get anything done. I have never felt more comfortable at a car shop. Ricardo is fabulous and so honest. He explains everything in detail and he suggests alternative solutions to problems that have saved me hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. I was looking for a good repair shop and came a cross Pentagon Liberty. Saw reviews and went there. Had my car "fixed". Not really. They did more damage than it was before. I hadn't written a review before this, but Ricardo's service and down to earth attitude deserve to be recognized. I went into the shop for a pre-purchase check of a vehicle I thought I was going to buy, but Ricardo and the mechanic on hand gave me a clean rundown on what to look out for and a list of the issues. I went into the store questioning the integrity of the car, but Ricardo and his team made sure I left with the confidence to make a decision. Ricardo is by far the best mechanic that I have encountered. He is honest, dependable, and exhibits amazing customer service skills. When fixing my girlfriend's car, he was always sure to keep me in the loop regarding the status of the repairs and continuously worked to provide the likely price tag. I have been comfortable knowing that there aren't shenanigans going on here. I like the inspection report that lists all major areas of my cars and if there is a recommended action. I also like that when I speak to Lucas, he ballparks when I need things done in case I want to spread out preventative maintenance. I've since left the region, but I do still visit a few times a year, and work in my service visits while I'm in town. That's probably the biggest endorsement I can give.

(1 Star Review) On…read moreJune 12, 2026, I dropped my vehicle off at the Japanese Auto Service Center at approximately 11:15 AM. I requested an oil change, tire rotation and balance, and a diagnosis of an A/C and heater blower motor issue that I believed required replacement. When I arrived, an attendant moved my vehicle and advised that it also needed a Virginia state inspection. While discussing the work, I asked whether there were any additional maintenance items they would recommend. A few hours later, I received a call recommending additional services, including brake service, a transmission fluid flush, and spark plug replacement. I approved the work after being told the vehicle would be ready before closing. At approximately 5:45 PM, having not received a completion call, I contacted the shop and was told my vehicle was finished and ready for pickup. I immediately walked over to the shop and met with the manager, Ed. While paying my bill, which totaled more than $1,100, Ed suddenly realized he had not addressed the inspection sticker. He grabbed a scraper and a new Virginia inspection sticker and walked to my vehicle. My windshield has been professionally tinted for several years. The vehicle had already passed a previous Virginia state inspection with the same windshield tint, and the inspection sticker was still visible. While attempting to remove the existing sticker, Ed used a scraper on the tinted windshield. He then stated that he needed Windex because of the tint. After returning with Windex, I observed visible damage and residue on the tint film where the scraper had been used. The damage is clearly visible in the photographs I took immediately afterward. When I pointed out the damage and stated that the shop would need to repair it, the entire conversation changed. Up until that point, he had been preparing to remove the old inspection sticker and install a new one. Once I raised the issue of the damage, he suddenly claimed that he could not complete the inspection because the windshield was tinted and that I needed tint authorization language on my registration. When I asked him to identify the law or regulation requiring such language on my registration, he could not provide one. I pointed out that he had been actively preparing to install a new inspection sticker moments earlier. He responded that he was going to do so "to make me feel better." He then refused to repair the damage caused to the tint. I requested the owner's contact information. Initially, he stated he would provide it. Later, he refused, claiming the owner was overseas and unavailable. He suggested I contact the Virginia State Police inspector who oversees inspection stations. However, whether the tint complies with Virginia regulations is separate from the fact that damage to my vehicle had already been caused during the inspection process. What concerns me most is the complete lack of accountability. Rather than acknowledging the damage and discussing how to resolve it, the conversation immediately shifted toward blaming the customer. This is not the first time I have experienced this. During a previous repair involving aftermarket shocks, I was also told the problem was my fault rather than due to installation or workmanship issues. As a customer, I can accept mistakes. What I cannot accept is damage to my vehicle, followed by shifting explanations, refusal to take responsibility, and an unwillingness to make things right. The result was a bill exceeding $1,100, unresolved concerns regarding the work performed, damage to my windshield tint, and no meaningful attempt to address the issue. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Japanese Auto Service Center. If something goes wrong, do not expect accountability, transparency, or customer service. This version is strong because it stays factual, documents the timeline, and avoids statements that could be challenged as speculation or defamation. In practice, reviews written this way tend to carry more weight with readers, Google, Yelp, and regulatory agencies.

I took it in on Tuesday and they mentioned it might be Wednesday before I'd get it back, no issue for me. However, they called me by end of the day that my car was ready to go and the repair was just around $50. They're conveniently located to a bus stop that easily allows me to get to my office, which was extremely helpful. They have a small front office that has two seats if you wait - there is also a strip of stores/food/hair salon across the street from them and noticed they are putting in a Sprouts just down the hill from them that can easily be walked to.
