After picking this business and setting it up with hospice+, I was informed that I would have to go to the Farmington Hills area to pick up my mom's cremains, NOT the city I live in, not the place I called, and not close to home. :/ Then they told me to fill out the emailed paperwork before Monday only to never get the paperwork. Yes, I checked the spam folders and called back to double check they had my email address correct, but I still never got the email. Even picking up the ashes was more stressful than it needed to be. When I pulled into the parking lot as per Google, my emotions were raw, but I realized there was no door on the east side of the building. So, rather than try to turn around in a parking lot and go back to Grand River, I thought I'd go around the back and use the alley. Nope. A big, white van was parked diagonally blocking the passage. With slight adjustments, the van could still have been on an angle, but let other cars pass. Thinking it might have been a loading or unloading, I waited. Nothing happened for a long time. I decided to park on the east side and walk around to the west side rather than try to turn around. While I waited, I wondered if the driver just didn't realize that the park job cut off the passage though? So, I left a note. It simply said, "This parking doesn't let other cars pass. :/ ) I thought it might have been someone like the young kid who picked up my mom and just didn't think about how he had parked? Then, I get to the door on the west side and it is locked. I walked to the front, and it says to use the door on the West side that was locked. It is during business hours. ?? I see a sign telling me to call, but the last thing I want to do is to talk to anyone right now, and I'm thinking that the owner must have had an emergency and closed the business? I am just considering that my 40-minute drive might need to be made again, when a woman opens the door and states that the building always locked - even during business hours. Her tone was admonishing as if I should have known they kept their doors locked. I was not told that. Sigh...more stress. I sit down to receive my mom's ashes when the owner strides toward me, swings his arm up and then slaps the note on the desk in front of me as he LOUDLY announces that he "Owns the alley and can block it whenever he wants!!" Um..okay. Can an owner make it harder for patrons and block parts of their own parking lot? Sure. Could both of us have taken a different route? Sure. Could he have explained that it took longer than expected to do something? Could he have said, I'm sorry for your mom's passing and I'm sorry the alley was blocked when you tried to get through? Sure. Could he have let it go? Sure. It just made a VERY depressing and very stressful day WAY more stressful than it needed to be. Maybe he was having a bad day. (I know I was.) Bottom line was, this place was cheap, but the empathy about the moment was not there. If you have another choice, I HIGHLY rec. you take it. Oh, and as I left about 5 minutes later, the van had been moved to allow people to pass through the alley.

July 23, 2023. For…read moremany years, my Mom had an advertisement taped on the refrigerator for John N. Santeiu and Son Funeral Home. She had written in parentheses (Romanian). Last year, my Mom and I went to visit Santeiu, as my Mom was elderly and declining, and I begged her not to leave all those decisions up to me at the last minute. We were so lucky to meet with Anne Santeiu-Ellis. She was caring and kind, and not at all pushy. Even though we were discussing the planning for, and purchasing of, end-of-life items and services, Anne has a soothing, calming voice and manner that helps you stay calm instead of becoming sad and hysterical. We picked out Mom's casket and vault, which made me feel better, because now I knew that my Mom was going to be buried in the casket of her own choosing. And her headstone would say exactly what she wanted. Anne called Acacia cemetery and let us know what their procedures and costs would be. Considering that no one wants to think of death and dying and funerals, Anne walked us through it in a compassionate way that made us feel relieved in making our choices in advance. Bless my Mom for having chosen in advance the outfit she wanted to be buried in. My Mom died on June 16, 2023. Brandy Carter assured us that she would treat my Mom with the utmost in respect and dignity. She washed and styled my Mom's hair as my sister had asked, and also painted Mom's fingernails red to match her outfit. They did indeed, dress my Mom in everything exactly as asked. This helped us to feel considerably relieved. John Ellis, III, let my sister and I spend time with my Mom before leaving for the cemetery. He was gracious and compassionate, which also helped with our grief. Everyone we met at Santeiu was kind and caring. I am so happy that everything went smoothly, with no arguing or hard feelings. Life itself seems like nonstop arguing over everything, and most people encountered nowadays don't seem to care about anyone except themselves. We appreciated that Santeiu treated us so thoughtfully, caringly, and compassionately. They understood that my Mom was deeply loved, that she had existed, and that her life had mattered. They definitely helped make a sad situation more bearable. Thank you to everyone at Santeiu. There is a photo of the flowers in her casket spray that I posted in the Google Reviews. I was not able to attach it here. My Mom had silk flowers all around the house, and I thought it would be lovely if we could use her silk flowers in the casket spray. My sister found "A Budding Florist," only 2 blocks away from Santeiu, and Sal agreed to work with our silk flowers. The arrangement he created was absolutely beautiful, and we couldn't have been happier. We are happy that her beautiful silk flowers were buried with her. There is a place set aside to bring in refreshments (2 fridges) and food for the family. The place is so clean and the staff was very friendly and worked to make everything special.
