My family came in a large group of 12 on Sunday around 3 or 4pm (after St Patrick's parade). Part of our group was already upstairs at the bar drinking margaritas by the litre. The hostess, made a big deal about how we all had to be in front of her to get seated.. the others were upstairs drinking and we completely the entire party. It was annoying,, as they weren't even busy (nobody else was waiting for seats). We went up to the bar and asked the bartender if we could eat up there and he said it would be fine. We come here every year after the parade. The margaritas are usually better, in fact it seemed very weak, because we also got more liters at the table, and I didn't feel tipsy at all. My main issue was the food, the beans had absolutely no flavor! Even some salt would have helped, I've never experienced bad food here. This was so bland, even the guacamole was bland, none of the food impressed me, to be honest. This is generally a good experience, we were so disappointed.

Pre pandemic this place had the best seafood chimichanga! No more seafood, aside from $30 shrimp flaming fajitas. Cheese on anything is $2. The pandemic has not been good to this place. Prices are kind of steep now. Inflation is real. Food isn't bad, just quite bland. My dad ordered fried mushrooms & the dish was literally just mushrooms lightly fried. No seasoning on the thin batter or the mushrooms. Mom ordered a plate/appetizer of guacamole ($9.75) instead of a 2oz side. I had wanted a large botana but it couldn't be served w/o refried beans, so i settled for super nachos. Even the jalapeños on top were mild. Best thing about (& most flavored part of) the dish was the copious amount of cheese. 3 entrees & 2 appetizers was $75.

    Carne asada

We came for dinner tonight and were severely disappointed in all of the steak dishes. They only serve one kind of steak, they call it a marinated skirt steak, AKA roast beef. It was full on roast beef. This is also the mini portion of fajitas which was wwayyy larger than described. The veggies did not have enough time cook so they were basically raw. The carne asada was the same skirt steak just grilled to this dark dry roast beef. We spoke to the manager and she was not helpful at all. She came over and basically said that's all we have sorry....I mean none of the food was touched, no suggestions, it was gross. Would not recommend.

I really wanted this place to be delicious. The staff and service is super friendly and great. The food is lacking in flavor. Our rice & enchiladas came out cold. The chicken flauta wasn't bad but also not warm. The food tasted like it had not been seasoned or prepared fresh recently. They do have flaming mushrooms, fajitas and fried ice cream. Sadly I don't think we'll be back.

Margarita - about $10 each. No drink menu

The good was the food, the prices and no wait. The bad was the length of time to get our fajitas.

Located at the corner towards the end of restaurant row in Mexicantown. Cute entrance with memorabilia. We bought a dozen pork tomales to take home. It cost around ten bucks. I am not usually one to order this dish, but this version was good. The masa dough and meat ratio were excellent, and the texture was firm unlike many where it's rubbery. Wouldn't mind returning for more items on the menu. Salsa is picante!

Found this gem during undergrad days. 2005-2009. Good memories here. Monday's were on par days - meaning $1 Canadian dollar = $1 USD. Even after 15 years, they still have this wicked deal. Although, I'm not too sure how waiters/waitresses feel about receiving tips in Canadian dollars. Fresh are 95% hot and fresh, I can only recall a handful of times where the chips were fried as a cluster and dripping in oil. Waiters and waitresses are 90% amazing, again, handful of times where they are inattentive. Onto food, portions are average. Only the fajitas are HEAPING. Beans and rice are average, nothing too crazy. But chimichangas are a delicious. It's always a struggle between the chimichangas, flautas, and enchiladas.

Chips were tasty and extra crispy, but service was a bit slow. Chicken in the tacos was a bit bland.

I tried their bbq ribs which I have never had before and they were amazing. They had a great char on them. Their tacos are still very good. I enjoy their carnitas meat. I'll have to come back for the chicken. Also Botanas. They are on the menu, and while I may have some deep reservations about this unique Detroit-Mexicantown dish, I'm going to have to return to try those too. But let's get to the tacos. I love that they are on small, doubled, corn tortillas. I love that they are only $3 a pop (less during Taco Tuesday). I love that they have some very traditional fillings. I love that they come with radishes and plenty of limes. After reading through some of the reviews I was compelled to try the following fillings, which are below in ascending order of their deliciousness: - Carne Asada: It's fine, but I wouldn't get it again. - Cabeza: Tender and flavorful, but oddly dry for a typically rich filling. - Carnitas: Juicy, tender, and delicious! A winner. Among the best I've had in the region. - Al Pastor: Yes! Finally! So far, the only good version I've found of this classic here in the area. I'd say it's a must order. Oddly, what dragged these tacos down for me was the choice of the corn tortillas. They were a bit too stiff, and their flavor was so pronounced that the shells overwhelmed the fillings. Typically in this type of situation, one can simply remove one of the two tortillas and just eat them gingerly to avoid the potential failure of the taco's structural integrity. However, my tortillas somehow fused together which made the operation impossible. What does that mean? Well, in future visits I am going to be looking for other ways to make the carnitas and al pastor shine! Maybe it's in a quesadilla. Perhaps a torta? Or could it even be atop a plate of Botanas? The mind boggles. But I'm looking forward to the journey and giving El Rey that fifth star when I find it. Oh, one last thing. The horchata is tooth achingly sweet. Next time I'll try another aqua fresca in the hopes it might be better.

I came last night and it was really busy. I ordered a carnitas burrito, one of my favorites. The food took over 45 minutes to come after we ordered it. Our table ordered 5 tacos and a burrito.... 45 minutes is outrageous. Once it finally came, my burrito was about half the size of what it typically is (posted a photo of my last burrito from here for reference) Then, they cut the burrito and there were pieces of foil all in the burrito (pictured) really not okay. The worst part, there were three massive bones in my burrito!!!!! When I complained, they said that carnitas has bones in it... I've never had bones in my burrito. They asked if I wanted something else and I said I want the same burrito but without bones and they told me that if I got the same meat it would probably also have bones in it so they didn't remake it for me. If I bit down on it I could've broken my tooth or choked. Really really disappointed with my experience last night. I'll be back because this isn't "normal" for them, but I'm really disappointed. The manager ended up comping my burrito and explained to me that sometimes baby bones get through the meat when they're cooking it... you can see from the picture we're not talking about baby bones- these were three massive quarter size bones

I have been trying Mexican restaurants all over the U.S. and no where compares to vecino and to think I found my favorite in Detroit amazes me. It truly is worth every penny. For what to order: All their appetizers are great. We usually switch it up and are satisfied with each one that we've ordered. The Totopos with salsa are a must and their guac is great as well. For mains- the asada del día is our go to. It is always cooked to perfection and comes with fresh tortillas. And it is hard for me to come by a tortilla in the U.S. that I enjoy. But here, they are excellent. They import their corn from Mexico and you can tell. This is served with bone marrow and some garlic onion spread that goes great on the taco. For dessert- their tres leches is amazing. The coconut cream pairs so well with the cake. I could eat like 10 of them. As if it's not obvious at this point vecino is my favorite restaurant in Detroit and one of my tops in the world. I will not be surprised if they are the first ones in Detroit to secure the Michelin star

I felt a little out of place being here given just how trendy and super party-like atmosphere it all was haha! And in the months since I've come here, it remains a super popular spot to go to if you're looking for that extremely lively atmosphere! None of this takes away from the quality of their delicious food! We had incredible dishes and they clearly take a lot of pride in sourcing intentionally all their ingredients for their food, and the waitstaff did their best to intro us to everything, despite how overstimulatingly loud the environment was, so I only came away from each presentation with about half the information they wanted to convey. But all in all, the food was good across the board, and we tried a ton of different dishes. There weren't any that were overwhelming showstoppers that made me want to come back here again and again to try the rest of the menu though, so I left Vecino knowing that I wasn't going to return anytime soon. It's definitely for a specific mindset and type of celebratory occasion, which is often not the one I'm in when I'm going out to eat with friends.
