So, I stopped by with my family for dinner largely based on the 4.3 Yelp review. We were a bit shocked. The worst Mexican food I've been exposed to in a long time. The refried beans were even inedible, dry, over salted, and some indescribable seasoning we couldn't identify. The chili relleno was fairly good. the beef taco was also inedible, again over salted, a large portion of ground beef, barely any lettuce or cheese and no tomato. We ordered a "to go" order for my aging father, an enchilada plate. The family was sitting around talking while he ate, he suddenly disappeared and we found him outside burying his dinner in the garden. We asked why, and his response was simply, "It tasted like s***." It was very expensive and the worst. After a long day out, the water was very good. That's all I can say about the food. The service was good and beer I selected was also very good. I guess I should add we were there in the evening/late afternoon on 27 March 2026. read more

I had the surf and turf with green sauce and everything about it was excellent, the flavors were awesome. The beans and rice were on point and the chips and salsa superb. We received complimentary chips and salsa, and we have to say their salsa is some of the best. We brought our dog with us, and sat on the patio which was lovely on a sunny day. The charm of one of Poway's oldest gems is gone. The atmosphere from the get go was underwhelming. White walls everywhere made the space seem cold and uninviting. The kitchen had their music playing so loud that you could hear it from the dining room which also had different music playing. The chips came hot, but the salsa was water. For someone that can't handle spice, the salsa had zero kick (which I was told later by the owner that their salsa is currently a 6/10 on the spice scale... perhaps 0.6/10 would have been more accurate). The enchilada sauce was the biggest disappointment. It tasted like pasta sauce. The tomato flavor was overwhelming. The chicken inside was definitely not all white meat as I'm used to in the past coming to this location. The beans were completely emulsified and it felt like eating baby food. The carnitas flavor was lacking, however the green salsa provided was very tasty! I gave a second star on the green salsa alone. Our waitress was kind and patient and passed along our grievances to the owner who eventually approached our table. He put the blame on his kitchen staff, telling us he'd just fired his chef yesterday and brought in a new crew. This will be a one and done for me. Food is at the caliber of something you could find at a fast food restaurant and expensive. $17 for this plate of food, no thank you. Nothing about this place is authentic Mexican food and it's a pity to see how gutted this place has become. Forgot to mention how defensive the owner seemed when he approached our table but his response to mine and any negative reviews say it all. Best of luck. read more

I lived in Poway for over 20 years and was excited to try out this new place! I visited with a friend during opening weekend to just check it and just get some appetizer and a drink. We ended up ordering tacos, burrito and plenty of margaritas! Everything was so delicious and the services was amazing! Everyone was so nice and made sure we were taken care of. Great new Mexican restaurant with great food and service! Started off with a margarita on the rocks and my friends had the manhattan made with tequila (I forget the name of it). Very good drinks, margarita not too sweet. Warm chips and a delicious salsa with just a bit of a kick was served with the drinks. I ordered the chili relleno and enchilada combo. It came with a cheese enchilada, but I requested to substitute a carnitas enchilada. The combo included beans and rice. The relleno was a pablano chili filled with cheese, definitely fresh and made by scratch, just delicious! It had a bit of a kick so if you're sensitive to spice, you might want to be careful with this one. The carnitas enchilada was on a fresh homemade delicious corn tortilla, stuffed with carnitas. The carnitas was slightly dry, but not anything to really complain about. I also enjoyed the beans and especially the rice that came with it. My friends ordered the surf and turf burrito that was filled with shrimp, carne asada, rice, coleslaw, pico de gallo and chipotle crema. One ordered a side of rice, the other had it ala carte. I'm not really complaining, but if you wanted to include rice and beans, it cost an extra $5 or $6 dollars total for both. You can get one or the other for an extra $2 or $3. In a way it's a good idea so that rice and beans aren't wasted. Anyway, the burritos were stuffed full. My friends enjoyed them. Really don't have anything bad to say. Parking is easy, it's clean and you can sit outside or inside. Looking forward to eating there again! read more

Came in totally unplanned on a Monday afternoon. Lucky me, it was just after 2:00 so I hit happy hour. Had a delicious skinny margarita which was wonderful. The chips were warm and salty which is perfect. The salsa was not spicy and was very good. For those who like spicy maybe there could be a second salsa. I ordered the carnitas sopes. Again good. My only criticism might be that the actual sope should be fried and crispy, these were soft. But the meat was delicious. Overall I will be back. Great service, atmosphere, drinks and fair prices. Was a frequent customer back when this place was mexicocina ... was in the area and wanted to see if it was worth trying again ( several owners later). Dined in the bar area.. a little noisy and crowded ( loud people and acoustics probably not the best). The food was fantastic.. a bit pricey but portions were decent. Was waited on by Josh who was very attentive and a really nice guy. Older gentlemen Bartender behind the bar was a tad unfriendly and gave off a surly vibe. Seemed to try to hustle us out by clearing plates prematurely and trying to possibly poach the tip from our server by trying to close our tab out when we weren't asking for the check and still had our drinks more than half full. All in all, good experience and I may give them another try when I'm in the area again. read more

Had a wonderful experience and great meal yesterday. The food was expertly prepared and came out immediately. Nice and hot and lots of flavor. The flautas were light and crispy, nachos were tasty, and the Baja fish tacos were also crunchy and delicious. The chips to start were not greasy and the salsa had plenty of spice. The service by Jackie was fast and efficient and even though she was flying solo she always made time to check in on us. We are definitely coming back. Next time we'll try something new. Mexican Bar is an asset to Poway! We don't have many Mexican restaurants left and this is a treasure of a place. The meat is tender and spiced just right. The portions are plentiful. The beans and rice will remind you of authentic Mexican. Plus the ambience is great and the service is wonderful! Everyone is so friendly and welcoming. Was semi busy when we arrived but dissipated quickly before order. Servers were courteous. We were hoping the food improved from former management and I think it did, Possibly, but the price to quality and quantity was way out of whack.. Carne burrito was not warmed, precooked beans and rice commodity would have been 4$ additional to 15$ burrito base. 7" long after they cut it... like was that to add a .5"? Or to fancy it up? Kids meal bean and cheese burrito was literally the size of my big toe but for 9$ came with beans and rice. we actually looked at each other and laughed. We have eaten at the Mexican Bar a handful of times. We prefer to sit in the bar. It has a pretty relaxed vibe, lots of sports on the TV's. The margaritas are outstanding. The food is great quality, not over priced, and has large portions. The reason for this review, is the Pozole. It is fantastic!! Now, I'm not the kind of guy that goes to a Mexican restaurant to order soup. But my wife did, and let me try it. Wow! It is delicious, with just the right amount of kick. My wife ordered it with chicken. When we go back, and we will be going back, I can't wait to try it with carnitas. It may be a new menu item, because I don't see it listed on the pictures of menus posted on this site. If you go, do yourself a favor and get this soup! Great vibes and margaritas. They're still renovating the right side of the restaurant so only the left Bar side was open. There were 3 round bar tables near the entrance so we snagged 1. During the 2 hrs we were there all the seats got filled but there was a lot of turnover so never a wait longer than a few minutes for a seat. A new hire was being trained as a server and she was a natural: friendly, attentive and clearly a quick learner. The jalapeño margaritas were delicious. Chips and salsa was mild but had good flavor. Surf n Turf plate came with well seasoned and tender carne asada and pretty big shrimp. The rice was a little undercooked and refried beans were ok. Let me start by saying I REALLY wanted to like this place. I guess I can give them a pass on the "hostess" Station with the fact that they are new. But it took us a while to be seated despite it not being very busy. I will say; the chips and salsa were great. Good late heat on the salsa. Our server was not good. Very slow and no active listening. Had to repeat things multiple times. I got the southeast bowl. It wasn't good. No seasoning on the protein. My wife got shrimp tacos. Also not good. Shrimp was kind of mushy and not seasoned. My 10 year old asked for a plain quesadilla. The server opted not to give him the kids menu quesadilla but the regular menu quesadilla at twice the price.
