For a restaurant established in 1965 this place is still holding it's own. Happy hour is 2 PM to close which is great because the margaritas are tasty and strong ($3.50 each). Hot and mild salsa is standard when seated and the chips are lightly seasoned with some sort of seasoning salt. I ordered the vegetarian fajitas with no dairy (cheese, sour cream, etc.) The fajitas were delivered without guacamole which upset me at first. However, my excellent waiter Carlos informed me that the guacamole had sour cream as an ingredient and offered to bring me slices of avocado instead! I wish they didn't shred it so finely because mixed in with the beans and melted cheese and saggy flour tortilla, the texture was too mushy. But it was cooked perfectly. Everything is rather mild, including salsa. I added a note to put in salsa verde but they either forgot it, or don't serve an extra salsa. The dish was a bit too salty for my liking and the rice was watery. Since when does an order of Mexican dish not come with salsa verde and some lime? But overall not too bad for this area. I will not return due to the food being horribly flavorless. The kids menu was horrible too. My child ordered the nachos and beef taco. Beef taco arrived drenched in grease. I used to visit this restaurant a great deal. They have gone downhill. Today for my birthday my sister and I ordered the fajita salad. Here is a list of veggies: lettuce, ... and that's it. White cheap lettuce with no green parts in it. There were also 8 miniscule thinly sliced strips of steak, small portions of guacamole and sour cream, an almost imperceptible amount of cheese and the overcooked deep-fried bowl. We asked our waiter about it and how a fajita salad could be just a few bites of meat and no veggies and she dismissed us, caring not one @#$ about our experience. Let me start with how stale the chips were. Next we ordered Mac n Jack beer, but they were out. We then ordered a pina colada, but they were out of tequila. We then ordered margaritas and they were pure syrup. We received the salsa, but didn't get the chips for about 5 minutes. We did not finish our drinks because they were so bad. We ordered our food and never saw the waitress again. The chips ran out and still hadn't received our meal and still no waitress. We got up and reluctantly paid for our drinks and left. This place was great. Very accommodating. Came here with my friend to pick up some wheels for the BMW and decided to get food before we met the person we were buying them from. She ended up coming a bit early so we asked if we could pay and come right back. They didn't even hesitate. They had the chef hold the order and then have it ready when we got back. Our table was still there as we left it. They did come by and check on us numerous times. I did not see fish on the taco menu but when asked they told me I could get cod or tilapia. The tilapia was great! I was especially impressed with the guacamole. It was a cream style and had excellent flavor. After 11 months of driving past this Mt.Vernon staple, I truly wish I kept driving! First, I stood unacknowledged next to the "wait to be seated" sign. We are long standing fans of Mexico Cafe, and recently had a nice in dining experience. BUT when we ordered to go food that we have had many times and enjoyed was a bitter disappointment. The black beans were so spicy I was unable to eat them. My husband received one SMALL ground beef enchilada whenI had ordered a shredded beef, the pork was dry, but my Chili Relleno was fair. And we did not receive the flan we ordered! The gentleman who took my order repeated it back, so I know he got it right. Food was also cold on arriving home. My husband picked up the order and first thing he told me was that he left no tip. My husband always tips! He said he was left waiting at the counter for over ten minutes as wait staff after wait staff walked by totally ignoring him. Tried Mexico Cafe for the first time today. My wife had a chimichanga and I had a steak fajita. They were both of the lunch menu. We got there before noon on a Sunday so it wasn't very crowded. We were greeted and seated within about 20 seconds of arrival. The standard salsa was a little ho-hum but not bad. The spicy salsa was great. Meals came quickly. My wife's chimichanga was huge! The steak in my fajita was the most tender and flavorful I've ever had in a fajita. Staff was attentive and pleasant. The bill for two lunches and a beverage was $25.00. read more

WOW! Having grown up in Arizona, I love earthy Sonoran style Mexican food. Having lived in the Pacific Northwest for many years now, I had yet to encounter anything close to what I was used to - let alone that was good. My test for a Mexican restaurant is their taco, and Mexico Café passed... the crispy taco is not in a preformed shell, it is fried with the meat in it. And shredded beef instead of ground... PERFECT! The combination plates seem to be oddly heavy on chili rellenos, but they were very happy to give me my favorite - crispy shredded beef taco, cheese enchilada, and tamale with no sauce. Love it! I just got back from Mexico cafe. We went as a group of 5 people. Overall our dining experience was really good. From the outside this place looks hit or miss, but we found the inside to be pretty clean (clean bathrooms too), and the service was friendly. They were really busy when we ordered so the food took a little longer to come out (maybe 25 minutes) but we were enjoying the chips and salsa and drinks anyway so it was okay. When the order came it was made correctly, with our substitutions done right. Also, since the group was vegetarian the waitress suggested substitutions for us as we ordered - she was really quite good. While we weren't blown away by this place I can definitely say we'll go back again. They have a pretty large menu with a variety of options, they know what a vegetarian diet is and what items on their menu are veg friendly, and it's clean. The service was good. The food.... not so much. I ordered camerones a la diabla, I got shrimp fajitas. The order only had five shrimps, three whole bell peppers, a whole onion, and two whole tomatoes. Since when does camarones al la diabla have any vegetables? The handmade tortillas were so nasty. If authentic Mexican is what you're craving Taco Bell would be a better option. My husband ordered carnitas. Unseasoned pork is what he got. The salsa tasted like ketchup. Would you come here for high quality? Probably not, For cheap edible Mexican? Sure... and for that... +1 Ambiance: Tacky tacky and old! Tables all chipped on the side, a weird little placement full of advertisements for local establishments, including one for burial and cremation services... +0 Service: Was great to start with, then she disappeared and we ended up waiting on the check. It wasn't a really long wait though, so I'll let it slide. +1 Convenience/Price: Right off the hwy as you come into Mt Vernon from the west, cheap for lunch, dinner or regular menu prices may not be worth it given the low to average quality of the food. +1 Other Factors of Awesomeness: Nope. +0 -- Probably would try some other fine Mt. Is it the most authentic Mexican restaurant around? No. Is it one of my favorites? Yes! This is a place where you go for consistency - I've had several things here, tried many others, and I haven't come across a dish I haven't liked yet. The chips and salsa, always a good indicator of a Mexican joint, isn't actually that good. Their salsa is the most bland salsa you will ever eat. I'm talking no spice whatsoever - a girl I know who thinks black pepper is too spicy can eat this salsa. However, they do have a spicy salsa available for those who wish, so if you are wanting some spice with your chips and salsa, remember to ask. Their chili verde is some of the best I've ever had. Very good flavor without being greasy. I've had it on several different items - delicious every time. The only qualm I have is one time it was not spicy whatsoever; this was actually my first time having it. It said spicy in the menu, but it was nothing near, on par with the salsa. But subsequent times I have had much better success. They have some of the better nachos I've had in the valley, Celia's Nachos. A small order will fill two people up, so be careful! A lot of the people I frequent this establishment with love the crisp tacos with beef patty instead of ground beef - while somewhat unique, I think I will stick to ground beef when I am in a taco mood. Margaritas are standard fare here, nothing to write home about. If you catch happy hour, they are a great value though, I believe $3 or $3.50 for a regular. Happy hour is well worth the trip - 1/2 appetizers (read Celia's Nachos!) and good drink specials. When I'm craving Mexican, this is our go-to spot. Yum yum yum. Best chili verde ever, its like no one else's. They have a smothered burrito, that is smothered in the chili verde. Also the chicken chimichanga is served with a side of chili verde for dipping. Seriously, try anything with their chili verde! Papusa tostada is amazing, but not officially on the menu - you gotta ask if they have it. Oh! Amazing salsa too, its very mild and my children love it. I will admit, the fajitas that I've had there were not the best, and sadly they do not have a traditional stuffed to chili relleno. There's is more of a flat very egg-y chili relleno. I've been going to the Mexico Cafe for quite some time, and in that time I've watched the prices go up, and the quality, and quantity of the food go down. My last meal was the Three Taco Combination with the beef patty tacos, remember those "Where's The Beef?" TV commercials? Well that's the first question I asked, and where was the cheese? I remember these taco's in the 80's and 90's when they were really good, and stuffed full of beef and cheese, now they are a complete rip off. The Burritos are still pretty good, but not the vegetarian Burrito. There are so many good Mexican restaurants in Skagit County now, I gave the Mexico Cafe another chance, but they didn't deserve it.
