The customer service was outstanding! They were super friendly and helpful. The portion of meat added to my fajita bowl was impressive and so juicy and tender. The flavor was good but it could have used a little more spice. Maybe there was an option for that I missed though. Several small tables inside and more seating outside. Seemed like a popular place. My only suggestion is to fix the tables. 3 out of four tables we tried (2 outside and 1 inside) were very unstable. I eventually just shoved a bunch of napkins under one of the legs to stabilize it. I picked up a burrito for lunch after a friend recommended Mexico City and it was exactly what I needed! It came with chips and salsa which were tasty and seemed house made. You're not going to find better tacos anywhere near here. To be fair, there's really only one other taco place anywhere near here and it's also pretty good, but MCC is better! The staff were so kind to us, the young woman at the register was friendly and sweet. I loved her little calligraphy she put on the horchata. The food came out at the perfect time, not alarmingly quick but not too slow either. The food was plated cutely and it was very yummy. What a cute little eatery that I would have never known about! Thankfully I was hungry for tacos while running errands and Google steered me in the right direction! We ordered chicken enchiladas w/mole. It was unusually sweet. The refried beans lacked flavor and the rice was bland mush. The chips and guacamole was the highlight. Chips were fresh. My mother loved the guacamole. I was looking for more flavor - cilantro, jalapeños... something. It was fresh but nothing to write home about. The elote was cold and loaded with mayo. One bite and I was done. My husband liked his California burrito. I'm not sure how I feel about French fries in my burrito. I think Im still cranky about the horrible enchilada plate. I left hungry. We happened upon this place and had no idea it existed! I'm not sure we had a good enough experience to return, but glad we tried it. The ambiance inside is mixed: order at the front, half exposed preparation area, and some high-top seating where the team brings out your food when ready. We got chips and guac, taco platter, quesadilla, and enchiladas. The young cashiers said they are known for their enchiladas so we were excited to try them out. Service was friendly, and seemed to have more than plenty staff onsite. Overall, prices felt steep and we weren't overly impressed with the flavors. Food didn't come out piping hot, and everything tasted pretty basic - not the vibrant, powerful flavors we look for in our tacos. The enchiladas were good, but felt a bit soggy and the green sauce didn't have much flavor. The quesadilla was pretty small and again, no flavors to write home about. I was quite surprised with this place. Usually I go to Central Ave or Lake St for Mexican food in Mpls, so it was nice to get some good tacos in SLP with some friends who live in the area. I really enjoyed the chicken taco but I wasn't a big fan of the fish taco as it had more fishy flavor and less seasoning than I would have liked. The meat filling of the tacos were less than other places I been to that's okay, just an observation. They rotated on different aqua Fresca flavors and this time we got watermelon which was very refreshing- I wish I got another one to go! We also had the tres leches cake and churros with chocolate dripping sauce- both were sweet and delicious. The churros were warm, crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside- it was my favorite item! The place is pretty small and you order at the counter inside then they bring your food to you. Chile rellenos very disappointing. Rubbery, thick cheese. The chile itself was a nice flavor though. Asked for Mexican coke and they gave me the kind with high fructose corn syrup instead. Good refried beans. The people there were super friendly and nice but seemed highly understaffed. I waited an additional ten minutes for my take out order which was ready the whole time even before I walked in (I saw it setting on the counter but didn't know it was mine until it was being bagged). Never go here. Went in for some Mexican food off a recommendation. Upon arrival they completely discriminated against me for being a white male. Immediately they surrounded me not allowing me to walk any further in the store. Asking questions and insisting I am a ICE agent. Ultimately forcing me out of the restaurant without any food. Being a veteran I was livid and feel extremely disgraced. They will not make you feel comfortable and i will never go here. read more

I may just have a new favorite Mexican place! If you aren't specifically looking to eat here - you might miss it... it's tucked away in St. Louis Park by the school. I ordered the chicken enchiladas and had them spice it up. The roja sauce isn't overly spicy so I had them throw jalapeños in it and on top. It was DELICIOUS! I left absolutely stuffed. I had ordered here once for take out and then we went one day to get dinner here. The service is truly outstanding! We ordered a quesadilla, birria tacos, chips and queso. The woman working the counter offered to bring us out some salsas to try as well after we had paid and were sitting down and they were very good about checking in with patrons, even though it was a order at the counter type place. The quesadilla was good, the birria tacos flavor was good but it was a bit more soggy than I care for and could have been a bit more crispy. The size of the queso was not too large, and the flavor wasnt anything to get excited about but I found if you mixed a little salsa with it, the flavor was amazing. They were quick about getting the food out so there was no long waits or anything like that which was appreciated. read more

What makes an experience so good? The food? The service? Today it was quite a mix. My daughter and I arrived and were waiting for my son to join us. For Madison we ordered a bowl w just Spanish rice and barbacoa. She loved it. I ordered a full fledged bowl carnitas and black beans lettuce etc. I got a Christmas tree worth of ornamentation. And it was gorgeous (see pic). Brando arrived later and ordered street tacos. Tinga and carnitas. I didn't sneak a taste but it was gone in sixty seconds (college kid). My favorite local Mexican restaurant! My husband and I takeout food almost weekly. We've eaten in the restaurant as well. The restaurant is pretty much staffed by family and they are polite, fast, and knowledgeable. Sometimes calling in an order during popular meal times might require a couple tries because their phones get busy! The restaurant is clean, hospitable, and warm. It's basic, but who needs fancy? They have seating inside and outside. Our favorite dish is the enchilada platter with chicken tinga and molé. If you like molé, theirs is a MUST HAVE! We are super happy to have this restaurant in our neighborhood. read more

Besides pizza, Mexican food is the most competitive venue in the metro area. I'm not a food critic, I just enjoy a genuinely good meal at a fair price with good service. I was drawn to Mexican City Cafe because of the many 5 star reviews by customers who raved about the authenticity of their cuisine. So, on this night three of us headed to St. Louis Park to see for ourselves. Everyone's right about the friendly and attentive service. But it should have been a clue that on a Saturday evening around 6:30 we were the only diners in the whole place, save for the couple who left shortly after our arrival. I assume they do a robust carry out business, otherwise I don't see how they can stay afloat. The decor is unremarkable, and a wobbly table didn't help -- and then they didn't give my wife a fork with her nachos, which were presented more as taco salad. Our friend had the chilies rellenos which she said was delicious, along with the requisite refried beans and rice. I had beef enchiladas. I wanted mild red sauce but was told at the outset if I wanted a sauce on the mild side I would need to order salsa verde, which I did. The only beef option was shredded beef, no ground beef, which I would have preferred. Okay. Getting past those two minor hurdles, I moved on. Overall, the enchiladas were decent but nothing extraordinary. The small portion of refried beans lacked flavor and were just flat. And the spanish rice, similarly run-of-the-mill. So, all in all, I could honestly only give them three stars. The best part of the experience came near the end of our dinner when the owner (I presume) came out from the kitchen and asked us how we liked our meal, shared his legit business struggles during Covid and the pride he took in having survived and grown his restaurant over the past four years since its opening. I really appreciated the exchange and his sincerity and friendliness. But, with all the choices out there for Mexican fare, I doubt we'll be back. I know I won't. read more

I had a barbacoa burrito, chips, and churros. While the barbacoa was delicious, the burrito was missing the pico, sour cream, and lettuce, save for one bite. I would have liked to have more of those to balance out the burrito. For most of it, I kept wondering why I was eating only beef, beans, and rice. The chips and churros were delicious. My only note there is that the inside of the churros was gooey. I'm not experienced enough to know whether that's a good thing or bad thing; I was just surprised, because the only other churros I've had were from Costco, and they were not gooey on the inside. read more

Am I in heaven? No, it's Mexico City ... Cafe! As someone who has lived in San Diego for 2 years, I can attest to the authenticity and quality of Mexico City Cafe's cuisine. The restaurant interior is not much to look at, and in fact qualifies as a hole in the wall. But do you not know the rule of Mexican restaurants? The finer the atmosphere the worse the food, and vice versa. The chips and salsa were "excellente"--the red salsa was both sweet and hot, which is a rare combination. The green (verde) salsa was perfectly bitter and a tad sour. The fish tacos were perfectly presented and tasted as balanced and wholesome as they appeared. Just the right amount of avocado, onions, moist fish, and a sprinkling of chèvre (goat cheese). The double layered soft shell tortilla was fresh as could be. For a happy ending, I tried the Mexican classic tres leches cake...drizzling with frosting and oh so moist and gooey. Not the least bit dry as I have found in other (okay Cuban) restaurants. Don't come in a hurry, everything comes on "Latin time" in due course. But it is worth the wait... read more

We've been driving past Mexico City Cafe for a few months and finally decided to stop in for some tacos on a Tuesday night. So glad we did! I got a taco platter with tinga, shrimp, and fish tacos. Surprisingly the fish taco was my favorite! It was a flavorful and well seared piece of fish. Hubby tried 3 tacos as well and said tinga was his favorite.
