We stopped into Mezcal last night, giving friends from out of town a tour of the wickedest street in America, and like previous visits to this establishment, I just couldn't figure out why it's so popular. Sure, the pornographic Mexican comic books that line the men's room are a treat to read, but the over-priced booze and moody customer service always makes me wish we'd skipped it. However, it is a cool looking bar, with a great selection of tequila, so there are a few merits I won't discount them for. Overall though, there's much better food, prices and service within blocks of the joint. read more

It was away from downtown and LoDo, away from the madness of the evening and in a cool little part of Denver that isn't as crowded. The food was great. The company was great. You ever go to a restaurant where the service is so bad, it honestly doesn't matter what the food tastes like? This is one of those places. We sat for literally 15 minutes before we even got brought water. We watched as tables who sat down 5-10 minutes after us had their drink orders taken. We watched them be brought appetizers. Finally our server came to us and said "Sorry for the wait" and stood there. Didn't ask how we were, didn't introduce himself, didn't ask if we wanted something to drink. Just stood there. So we ordered. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Servers, I am not at a restaurant to be amazed by your memory. WRITE MY ORDER DOWN. If nothing else, it'll make me feel better. I say this because every time I go to a restaurant with one of these savants, they always forget something. In this case, it was our chips and salsa. So I'd love to tell you how their three salsas are, but since we never got it and had to just watch our neighbors eating theirs, I can't. Also, no free chips and salsa at Mexican restaurants makes Adam an angry boy. The food was pretty good. But I can get pretty good Mexican food at pretty reasonable prices at a thousand different places in Denver. This was my second visit to Mezcal and while I do enjoy it, it's just not my favorite when it comes to Mexican food. My first time through, I had the fajitas and they were very good. This time around I had a couple of the tacos and I just wasn't super impressed :( For instance, the Taco Dorado is supposed to be served with potatoes but I don't recall tasting or seeing them. The Pork Belly was okay but unfortunately, too spicy for me and the Barbacoa was also just okay. Honestly, it could have been my approach to eating them as they are served open-faced, laid out next to each other on one plate and I just kind of went back and forth between them, so I really couldn't discern one flavor from another and eventually the spiciness overhwhelmed my palate altogether. We also had the chips and guac with 3 salsas - the guac was good, just a hint of spiciness to it and my favorite of the 3 salsas was definitely the tomatillo. The margs are also okay - only served on the rocks which is fine but my strawberry was kind of bland and not a good mix of the tequila and syrup. Overall, this just feels like a good place to maybe do chips and guac, have a beer, and sit outside. Not my first choice for dinner. read more

I really like this place. Management, where are you? Was there a couple weekends ago. I would say my last visit was 4 stars, but previous visits have been pretty varied in terms of quality of experience. I love their sangrita and they have a good selection of tequilas. I did get a couple shots of tequila on this visit. The pours were... exact? I know these are higher shelf but when I pay $10+ for a shot of liquor, I'd like to look at the glass and think the pour is... more than an ounce. Service is varied. This time a couple friends and myself sat at the bar. One guy started us off but apparently the bar is a shared responsibility and we soon found ourself talking to three different servers asking if we needed anything. This place has the worst service I've ever seen. We waited 45 mins for a glass of water (kept reminding him) and much longer for food and drinks. The server forgot our appetizer, forgot our drinks, and was all around oblivious and SO SLOW. And the food is just mediocre! Mine was bad... I mean really really bad. First, I don't mind paying for chips and salsa but I don't want stale chips fried in oil that is at least two days past it's prime. I also would like more than a shot of salsa in order drown said crappy stale chips. The service was friendly but unorganized and slow. I ordered a combo that included a chicken enchilada which was passable, a carne asada burrito and a tamale.. The burrito was a rolled up tortilla with a small amount of unseasoned cheap beef, overcooked beans and rice. It was unbearably dry and bland. The tamale was all masa with nothing much more to it. So, first off let me say this place has been on my radar and I have had multiple people recommend this place to me. But after having ordered it through a delivery service and still trying my best to give this place more than one star, I can not. Being a Latino, from Texas with an eye and palette for Tex-Mex cuisine, this place is a let down. The enchiladas, were cold, tasteless, and prepared with no love or attention to detail, taste or authenticity. The rice and beans although good in texture, they lacked flavor, or any sort of uplift. Now on to the queso. The queso was broken. Let's get that out of the way. The sauce was completely separated, fat sitting on top of dairy and I can't even put into words how bad it looks for a restaurant that claims to sell Mexican or let alone Tex-Mex to not be able to make descent queso. I tried out Mezcal last weekend after finding a Groupon. I had a group of 10 for dinner at 6:00. I'll start with the not so great: We were all there a little early. Happy hour ends at 6:00. I got a drink at the bar and was given the hh prices, but when we were sat at the table (5:55), we were denied hh. There were 10 adults who would have ordered drinks for $5 a piece, but since they said happy hour was over, we all had water and only 2 had the $10 margs. Loss of $30 in my books. The service was so so. They didn't ave my reservation, but sat us fairly quickly. The waiter was a bit odd. He forgot one order, but the kitchen got it out within 10 mins of the rest of the food. The one thing that I was not thrilled about was a charge for an extra drink and extra chips and salsa. I didn't notice until the bill was paid. OK now the good: Food was delicious. Between us we ordered a range from Hamburgeusa, burritos, tacos, soup, chile relleno, and more. It was all very good. And the portions were HUGE. The price was extremely reasonable. The bill totaled $146 for 10 for us! Including a couple of cocktails! The fact that we had a Groupon worth $60 made the dinner extremely affordable for a large group. I love the neighborhood and the decor. It is very bright and well lit. It has a fun atmosphere. I will come back, but will be sure to make it early for happy hour! read more

My gf and I rolled into Mezcal one morning looking for a good mexican restaurant and were really disappointed. My main gripe: their green chile was super watery. So watery in fact that my tortilla was nothing more than a saturated paper towel not but 30 seconds after my food was placed in front of me. And the flavor... forget it. YUCK! Mexican food basically boils down to three things: The green chile, meat selections, and the enchilada sauce. The rest is pretty basic. Mezcal failed miserably in all three categories. I want to give this place just one star, but due to their HUGE selection of tequila I'm giving it two stars. I order through 3rd party delivery services often (DoorDash and UberEATS) and for some reason, I always have issues with DoorDash deliveries. I really wanted to like Mezcal since they are in my neighborhood & they offer some extra veggie options. Unfortunately their food is truly disgusting & I would give it no stars if that were an option. First bad omen, even though the place was dead it took forever for the waitress to simply come over to my table after I sat down. She was too busy chatting it up with the bartender and her other co-workers sitting at the bar. She was also slow about coming back later. To start, I ordered Nachos. The soyrizo was very dry & the nachos were piled with a bunch of veggies that I have never seen on nachos before (squash?, zucchini?, etc). It seemed like they just grabbed whatever vegetables they had laying around. The particular veggies used made the nachos taste really gross. Furthermore , they didn't even use any of the traditional items that one would expect on nachos like salsa, sour cream or guacamole. For my entree I ordered the cheese enchiladas. When I tasted them I was reminded of Casa Bonita's food (not a good thing). The cheese was a very poor quality & the sauce tasted like a canned tomato sauce. I can't believe people actually pay for this dollar store food & go back for more?!! Everything I ate was extremely bland & flavorless. There was no spice what so ever. We got a great coupon from restaurants.com and basically picked this restaurant out of a hat, but it was AMAZING! The mojito left a little to be desired, but the food was top notch. I judge a mexican joint on its mole sauce and Mezcal gets an A. It was more sweet than spicy so just beware if that's not what you are looking for. We also ordered the pumpkin encrusted mahi-mahi and it was heaven in my mouth. I highly recommend this funky, ecclectic and wonderfully delicious restaurant to anyone! read more

Tacos= bird sized portions for $9 the amount of fillings (lettuce [cabbage], pico, etc- no cheese included) I was given for three tacos was MAYBE enough for one. The place wasn't very busy, and our server seemed like he was more occupied playing on his computer across the room rather than taking proper care of his tables. Unlike most Mexican places, chips and salsa are not included. Also, the queso is like chunky melted shredded cheese. I tried to give this place another chance in search of some good tacos with chips and queso. Last time we were here I got tacos and they weren't the best (taste or portion) and this time I got the shrimp tacos. Just moved to the neighborhood and was very excited to see a Mexican (tex-mex) restaurant. To our disappointment the food and drinks are simply terrible. We started off with the Mezcal's famous margaritas, oh wow what a mistake. The salt level was on another level and the taste was almost like they took lemon-lime gatorade, salt and really bad low shelf tequila and mixed, do not recommend. We even sat with a group of 10 friends and all of us agreed the drink was poorly made and expensive. For food I have eaten there twice. First round was the chicken burrito. Absolutely no flavor in the chicken, the beans tasted like canned (which I'm sure they were) and the avocado (which was extra) definitely was jarred and not worth the money. The second and last time we went to Mezcal I decided to challenge the chef with one of the most complex Mexican dishes known to man, the cheese enchilada. This i have to say was decent for a dorm room cafeteria, I mean the red enchilada sauce was the same you get for 39 cents at sprouts and the cheese was like they took a brick of white cheddar, wrapped the tortilla around it and hit go on the microwave. It also was $11, which at any half decent Tex_Mex restaurant a cheese enchilada is usually around $9. Not getting the negative yelp reviews! This place is great. The service is friendly and fun, the food is great, and the atmosphere will make you want to bring people back. The price point won't kill you either. I really appreciate the vegetarian options. Most Mexican restaurants don't provide vegetarian dishes as a primary option on their menu. The drinks were great. If you are at all interested in authentic small-batch tequilas and Mezcals, check this place out. They are the only Mexican restaurant i've found that has Fidencio Pechuga Mezcal! Did you know that Denver's population is 32 percent Hispanic? You wouldn't by stepping into Mezcal, an "authentic Mexican taqueria and cantina," with about all the authenticiy of Charlton Heston's performance in "Touch of Evil." Mezcal is too expensive to be authentic. Too filled with pasty yuppies. Too gringo-fied. Too artificial It has this sort of fake Mexican diner dive vibe with its Tijuana bibles and south-of-the-border kitsch. Meanwhile, there are dozens of actual divey Mexican joints in this town, you know with actual Mexicans as customers, not gringos dripping watered down Tapatio on their soyrizo quesadilla gringa and downing shots of overpriced tequila. I will say that the servers to an admiral job of keeping the scrum happy and the tables going. But yeah there are so many more actual authentic Mexican restaurants and bars in Denver that are much better and much more real than Mezcal. read more

I went to this place yesterday after searching on google for a good margarita place in Denver. I was just in Denver for one day visiting from Florida. If I lived in Denver I would definitively go back. Pros: Awesome tacos for a good price. The chips and salsa (they bring two types of salsa) also very good. The drinks all tasted good and the mojito was a legit mojito (I'm from Florida, I know these things). Cons: They don't have frozen margaritas. They charge $2 for chips and salsa. Love this place! Came here for taco Tuesday ($1 tacos!!). It was super crowded with about a 45 minute wait at the prime dinner time. We had a pretty big group but were able to squish into a table. Chips and salsa weren't free but were cheap and absolutely worth it. The margs were pretty good and had a decent amount of tequila in them. Even though it was crowded service was pretty quick. I've also been here on weekend nights (less crowded than Tuesday's). The atmosphere and decor is excellent. My favorite tacos are the chicken and fish tacos (though I've yet to hear anyone I've been with say anything negative about the tacos). I definitely have my favorite Mexican food places and Mezcal certainly ranks pretty high on there with 'em. The pork tacos I had were pretty tasty, while the combo plate and chips & guac my friends ordered looked pretty awesome as well. The guac ball was about the size of a baby's head and damned tasty. Their list of cocktails is long and their tequila selection rivals what Jose Cuervo would keep in his personal stash - 3 whole pages in the drink menu. We met another friend there that knew the manager and set us up with a very top shelf, and not on the menu, tequila - not a shooter, but a sipper. Glad I had my Tecate to drink after too. The Spanish porno manga-type comics in the bathroom made me laugh and want to check out what was in the ladies room too. Should've knocked first... Between Margaritas and the live music, it'd be pretty hard to have a bad time here. If your ears can handle a few decibels and don't mind speaking loudly across the table you will do well to visit this place on a Saturday night. The waiter was attentive and did a great job balancing attention to all his tables despite a full house. As far as the food, I got down on my Barbacoa tacos like nobody's business. I have been to Mezcal many nights while pub crawling on Colfax, however, I haven't eaten here until just the other night. I was pleasantly surprised. I didn't have high expectations. Maybe it was the plastic tablecloths that gave me that feeling, not quite sure. I had a combo plate and when I asked to substitute a guac toastada for a chicken, even though it says, no substitutions, they were more than happy to accommodate me. The toastada was yummy and the smothered bean burrito was the one of the best I've had. There was rice mixed in, which I love. The chili relleno was not so much, I actually only ate a few bites. I was disappointed that the combo plates do not come with a side of rice and beans. My husband got home made pork chlupas and he said they were "the bomb." Personally, I thought they looked very greasy. Mezcal was good, the margaritas are always good here and now I know that the food isn't too bad either! read more

I didn't like the food here. The flavors were off. The food is on the pricey side for Mexican food, which makes it all the more strange that the flavors were so off. I had the cheese enchiladas, and the red sauce tasted like it came from a can and not a good one. I like the taste of some canned red sauces and confess to kind of liking the cheese enchiladas at Casa Bonita. My boyfriend had the fajitas, and our friend had the mole rojo. The mole flavor was also off. The mole was too sweet and really watery. The fajitas were the best, although they were really overpriced at $17. Our server was friendly and working really hard, so I want to bump up the rating to a three because of him, but I just can't. The décor, although colorful and kitchsy, also seemed off. I came here with 2 friends since they had purchased a groupon for Mezcal (ever notice how the restaurants that NEED to use groupon, usually aren't that good in the first place?). Myself and two friends came into mezcal today. In fact we are still here. The salsa is great. We haven't even eaten yet and we already have to write a good review. Drew is very attentive and gave us all cherrys in our sodas and engaged in fun banter. There aren't even any annoying yuppies... plenty of yuppies but none of them are annoying! All that being said my experience here is way better then the last time I took a tinder date here and she got too drunk and threw my phone insisting that Norman Rockwell was a racist... I really enjoyed Mezcal. We went on a Saturday afternoon and I had a restaurant.com coupon. My two dining companions ordered tacos but I went with the Mole chicken. (that's not the name, but it's the only mole dish on the menu). It came with rice and beans and fried plantains. My dining companions were fine with their tacos but I thought the mole was delicious. It had somewhat of a kick to it, but a slow paced kick. As in, I was starting to feel it in my face towards the end of the meal. The plantains were mildly sweet and warm. I really enjoyed this meal. I also had a mimosa with their fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice. Just ask for it instead of orange juice. After a few rounds of drinks, I sure was happy we had a coupon. I would go back for the mole but would have to keep my drink tab to a minimum. I also really enjoyed the decor of this place. I loved all the hanging lanterns and the bar area was very alluring. I would go back for this mole dish. I just love when I order something and it only makes me want to return to eat it again. read more
