Festive, fun, casual. Good food. Hipster-ish. It's on Colfax, so there are some Colfax-y type people that wander in, but it's a great little spot. Apparently the men's room has dirty comics on the walls while I can confirm that the ladies room has only a portrait of the Virgin Mary herself. First time here. Usually go to the Rio for margs, decided to check this place out on a Friday night. We were there around 5:30 on a Friday night, so we might have missed the rush, but were seated right away. Waiter was very knowledgeable and friendly. Had the veggie tacos with the corn tortillas which were excellent! My wife had ESPECIAL TAMBIEN margs and said they were very good also. Very pleasant experience. Definitely will be back. Ok, so we live a few blocks from Mezcal. We felt like having some Mexican food the other day and the one place we wanted to go to turned out to be closed, so we headed to Mezcal to give it a second chance. It was a good thing we did because their fish tacos and mojiots are delicious! We will definitely go back there and try something else. What a cool place. The art on the walls seems to encompass all of my favorite things: zombies, Mexican wrestling, and beautiful women. Did I mention zombies? The food was so-so in my opinion. Part of that may be me though. I'm a pansy when it comes to vegetables, so the cabbage on my tacos (which were $1 each since we were there during late night happy hour, by the way) had to be excommunicated to the edge of my plate. By the time I had picked off all the cabbage, there wasn't much left. However, what a great place to drink. I was in town for meetings a couple weeks ago and a friend in the area recommended this place for good Mexican. I was not disappointed. The atmosphere is low key but fun. Lots of Christmas lights, lots of people talking. A great place to start a night out or catch up with a friend. Let's get the bad out of the way. The service at the bar was slightly questionable similar to one of the reviews below. My friend and I got in and were told 10 minutes for a table. No problem. We'll just saddle up near the bar, get a shot and a beer and wait it out.Yeah, there was a lot of waiting and not so much drinking. To be fair, they looked slightly understaffed but we got our table before getting a round. I had the mole chicken and my friend had the beef burrito. I can only speak for the chicken but it was moist and the sauce was tasty. One other thing that I liked was the serving size. Too many Mexican places just heap the beans and rice on the plate but the amount here was just right. The beans were good too and about as far from canned as you can get. The damage on this was less than $15. But oh the tequila and mezcal. So I currently live in a place where the government controls liquor distribution (hint: starts with an "o-", ends with an "-ntario.") so the selection of tequilas and mezcals blew me away. And most were less than $10 for decent pours. Our waitress (I believe she identified herself as "Squirrel") was great. I ordered an El Tesoro Blanco and then let her choose the next 4 with a mix of tequilas and mezcals. She did not disappoint. Squirrel was great, really friendly, and great to talk to....even before the drinks. I'd love to head back next time I am in town. I had a Living Social voucher for my experience here. And I would recommend taking advantage of that if coming here is convenient. Especially if you happen to be taking in a show at the Bluebird. They seem to have a decent happy hour and some specials that are good. They were also sampling Tequila when I left, which if I didn't have to drive would have been great. But I would never pay full price for a dinner here. The food is average and they make you pay for chips and salsa. I was at the bar and my service was fine but I don't doubt some of the service complaints present in other reviews. If I lived in this neighborhood, I would come here to drink and eat (in that order) sometimes. But I don't and I doubt I will be back. read more

Dirty place with nasty food. We were sat at a set table with food on it. The waitress was oblivious to it as she laid our menus on it. I had the enchiladas both the chicken and beef had almost no meat in them. The berg was hamburger, cheep product and maybe a tablespoon served. The fajitas my friend had tasted like it was rotten, like dirty feet greasy and very low quality meat. Our waiters asked us how things were and we said "ok". She replied "not very good is it. Then I agreed and said " it's pretty bad". She thought I was joking and walked away. The refrained Beas were tasty and why it got 2 stars it should only get one. Love this place! Came here for taco Tuesday ($1 tacos!!). It was super crowded with about a 45 minute wait at the prime dinner time. We had a pretty big group but were able to squish into a table. Chips and salsa weren't free but were cheap and absolutely worth it. The margs were pretty good and had a decent amount of tequila in them. Even though it was crowded service was pretty quick. I've also been here on weekend nights (less crowded than Tuesday's). The atmosphere and decor is excellent. My favorite tacos are the chicken and fish tacos (though I've yet to hear anyone I've been with say anything negative about the tacos). Love the food, very spicy and it's hard to find a really good Mexican/Hispanic restaurant in Denver after growing up in Tucson, AZ. It's still not Sonoran in style, but is very good none-the-less. Great tequilas and the bartenders/servers are very knowledgeable about them. If you haven't sat in Mezcal and sipped a great tequila with their Sangrita chaser, you are truly missing out!!! I ate here last night. Ordered the Molcajete. Presentation was amazing. Completely devoid of flavor. The chicken and beef were bland. The sauce they were swimming in had no flavor. The shrimp was overlooked and tough. For $22 I expect some serious flavor. I've never sent food back to the kitchen but this was the first time. I had the carnitas tacos instead. It was basically just some shredded pork on a tortilla. Also no flavor. I ate it and just pretended that it was good. I didn't want to be "that guy" and send it back too. They didn't charge me for the Molcajete. The service and the drinks were excellent. If it wasn't for that I would only give 1 star. If you find yourself here on accident order the Mezcal Margarita. My boyfriend and I were so excited that Mezcal renovated and upgraded their menu! We got there for happy hour and ordered the house margs right away. They were simple and strong, just the way they should be. Then we got chips and salsa (free) and ordered guacamole. The salsa was smokey and very tasty, and the guacamole was really good too. Then we got the chicken and veggie pupusas and duck confit tamales. Wow! The veggie pupusa was so cheesy and amazing, with green chilies scattered throughout. The mole on the side of the tamale was spot on and the duck was extremely moist and crispy. In addition, our waiter, Bobby, was very knowledgeable and attentive. We will def be adding the new Mezcal to our go-to neighborhood spots. read more

Before heading over to the Bluebird last weekend, Lisa H and I popped in to Mezcal for some foodstuffs and a few pre-show beverages. I had been to Mezcal once before, but didn't get a chance to eat anything, so I was anxious to finally try a sample of the menu during this visit. Lis and I both opted for the #1 combination plate: a beef tostada, a chile relleno, and a chicken enchilada. Not stellar, but I enjoyed it. I really dug that the chile relleno wasn't over powering. We accompanied our food with some Pacifico. Again, not a great beer, but I'm perfectly okay with pairing it up with Mexican food. Outside of happy hour, the beers were a bit expensive ($4.50 each). Mezcal has a great atmosphere; I felt like I should be in Miami, that is, if I couldn't see Colfax. I love the paintings and decorations, especially the skulls above the bar. Myself and two friends came into mezcal today. In fact we are still here. The salsa is great. We haven't even eaten yet and we already have to write a good review. Drew is very attentive and gave us all cherrys in our sodas and engaged in fun banter. There aren't even any annoying yuppies... plenty of yuppies but none of them are annoying! All that being said my experience here is way better then the last time I took a tinder date here and she got too drunk and threw my phone insisting that Norman Rockwell was a racist... I know I'm in the minority when I say I actually really like Mezcal. I LOVE their $1 taco Tuesday special ($1 tacos all day long) and the fact that they carry Modelo tallboys. I've never found the staff to be rude or inefficient. Sure, it may be a liiiiiiiiiiiittle slow, but I'm never in a hurry when I go there. My waiters have always been really nice and they've never botched an order. The vibe of this place is great and the music is at a level where you can hold a conversation and still feel like you're in a vibrant space at the same time. I think the one thing I do have a point of contention with is calling the place "authentic." I think you'll find a lot more authenticity in Berkeley or the Santa Fe Art District when it comes to real Mexican food. I'm surprised by the bad reviews of Mezcal because I've been there twice and I think it's a solid spot. This is one time it's probably better I didn't Yelp it first. The restaurant is spacious and you can order food to stay or to go. I like starting with the chips and salsa. I've had both the fish tacos and a salmon dish. Both were very good. The fish was grilled and not fried, which I prefer. I didn't realize that the beans would have cheese, and I can't eat cheese, so just fyi in case you want to ask for the beans san cheese. A group of 5 of us went to Mezcal for brunch to celebrate Mothers Day. Several other places in the area were packed for brunch but we were able to make a reservation within less than a week in advance. Also, mothers ate free which was really sweet. We ordered a variety of drinks: mimosas, bloody marias/marys and I had a margarita. The margarita was big (served in a pint class on the rocks) but pretty weak. Our server was very friendly and the food came out quickly. I ordered the huevos rancheros which were just okay. No one else really said anything about their food either way. The back area smelled a little funny (maybe musty?) and the pipe above our table was leaking. Overall, an okay place but with so many Mexican brunch places in the area, I'd rather go elsewhere. read more

Came for happy hour and ended up eating. Everything was just OK. The Happy Hour $5 margarita was ok----nothing great and slightly below average. The chips were good and the guacamole did not have a lot of flavor. I did like the red and green salsa that came with the order. I got the chicken enchiladas. It literally took about 3 to 4 minutes after we ordered to have our entrees delivered. So obviously Everything is sitting in the kitchen ready to go--assembly only needed. Their $5 bottomless mimosas in various flavors just rocked my world!! That ALONE was worth the visit. No complaints here (and they weren't weak sauce either). We are from Texas so we are checking out the mexican food situation in our new city and I gotta say it was rather delish. Not too shabby Mezcal! Vastly improved from the Mezcal of a few years ago. I last ranked Mezcal in 2012 when I was adamant that it was merely mediocre. How times have changed. Now, I'd venture to say I'm a regular at taco Tuesdays and it is quickly becoming our go to for tacos. Tuesday night taco deals are terrific and it isn't insanely crowded like some other places. The salsa is right on and they make a damn good margarita. The boyfriend is a massive fan of the Micheladas. I just wanna say that this is a horrible establishment I really wanted to like it because I LOVE Mexican food . First off it caught my eye because they had a sign displayed outside saying bottomless Mamosa's so I went in with a large group they also had a sign that said please seat yourself and when we were getting ready to seat ourselves the waitress came over and dictated where we needed to sit and the restaurant was empty. Waitress came over and advices us of the none existing bottomless mimosas however told us that we could still order mimosas she was then later corrected that it was only Saturday thru Monday.....what weird days to have a special. First off let it be said that I would never go to Mezcal solely for the food. However, late at night after Bluebird shows Mezcal offers a taco happy hour, which is right up my alley. To summarize, it's just fine. The food was fine, not the best, not the worst. The service was about in the middle. To start, I ordered my go-to appetizer, the Queso Fundido. Maybe the chorizo version is great, but if you opt for the non-chorizo version, there was really nothing else to the queso to make it interesting. There was a few morsels of jalapenos; no onions, no peppers, no mushrooms. It was fine though. I wouldn't kick it out of bed unless Pinche's Queso Fundido texted and asked, "you up?" So I come here every Tuesday. Evan always takes care Of me as well as Johnny and a few of the girls when I sit at the bar. The manager Danielle how ever is never Friendly. I manage a restaurant as well and always thought her Cold demeanor was unwelcoming. Today I saw her in absolute horror mode. Disrespectful to her staff in front of guests. And taking shots with bar guests while also never talking to the dinner room where guest after guest had no service and were coming to the bar. It was busy but a manager on the floor rather behind the bar would have been much more beneficial. I asked her if she was the owner she said No just work here a lot. Helloooooo your the gm. A couple of my friends and I ordered breakfast burritos, and the entire order was wrong. Each burrito had random filling that made no sense and was not at all what we ordered. Our entire order was over $50, and it wasn't even edible. One was supposed to have no beans, but it was almost entirely black beans. Two should've been identical, but they each had different fillings that weren't identical and weren't even the fillings that were on the menu. We tried to just make the best of it, but one even had so many peppers that was too spicy to even eat. I have no idea what person made those and thought any of that made sense, but it was disgusting and unacceptable. Such a let down for a place I'd heard good things about. This was the worst service I think I've ever had. The server (who did not even give us his name) was lazy and inattentive! We came during happy hour and the margarita and pupusa were very good (8/10). The place was empty and yet the server still gave us no time. He was rude and did not even ask if we needed anything else after he brought us our food. When he brought us our checks he just threw them over the wall instead of bringing them around to our table.
