I'd be remiss if I left Spartanburg without reviewing the good, the bad, and the awful. So let's knock those out. Mezcal is a great example of a pretty bad restaurant. I ate at Mezcal many times because it has a convenient location, but after a while, it was clear that it's kind of a bad restaurant. Service is usually fine-to-great. That's certainly never been the problem. I've dined in and gotten taken out multiple times and have never gotten bad service. Sadly, I can't really recall a single meal that I've actually enjoyed. Mexican food is supposed to be bold and flavorful. It doesn't necessarily need to be spicy, and often times it isn't. One thing it simply cannot be is bland. Unfortunately, Mezcal's food is almost unbelievably bland. To make matters worse, they don't actually have any hot sauces that add spice. I've had more than enough meals at this restaurant to conclude that it wasn't an off day. It simply is the reality of this restaurant: good-to-great service but terrible food. read more

However my server was so sweet and attentive and I got a nice table outside since the weather was fantastic. I got a beer and the fajitas. I've been here a few times before but this was the first time I remembered to take pics. Stopped in for a solo lunch and grabbed one of the remaining seats at the bar. Service was quick and attentive and my order was taken shortly after arrival. While waiting on my meal, I munched on some tasty chips and salsa. Shortly after the chips, my order of elote arrived as an appetizer. It was good and fresh but I was hoping for a little char to give the flavor a boost. My entree, Pollo Yucatán, came soon after. It's grilled chicken breast, with sautéed onions, topped with grilled jumbo shrimp. Served with rice, lettuce, sour cream and tomatoes. The chicken was quite thinly sliced and a little over cooked but tasty. The shrimp was seasoned well. I didn't eat the rice because I had the corn but it looked the part. I'll likely be back on my next visit to try more. read more

If I could rate zero stars I would. I have dined here a handful of times and this time I will not be back. The service was awful, the food was bland. I was up charged $5.00 on one entree when two entrees were identical and could not get an explanation to why one cost more than the other. We waited 25 minutes for our queso just for it to come out cold but the bowl was hot which meant it was probably microwaved... this place has gone downhill. read more

Honestly, the food here was excellent. I was impressed. After growing up in California, it is very difficult to find really good Mexican food. Currently I live on Long Island and came down for a recruiting visit and this place doesn't compare to any place on Long Island with quality, authenticity, and price. The rice was actually Mexican rice and is how it should taste/look, which trust me is very hard to find. I ordered the Chile poblano "Chile Relleno" and it was incredible. Kind of felt at home in Cali with this surprisingly very good Mexican food. If you haven't tried this place, I highly recommend you do. And the service was excellent. Best Mexican restaurant in the area. Staff works hard to prepare tasty meals and a wide variety of dishes to choose from. Usually I find one thing and stick to it but in this case I am working through the menu to try as many things as possible. Fajitas are a solid win as are the enchiladas and burritos. The chicken tortilla soup is delicious and a favorite when I am feeling under the weather. Manuel is constantly in motion taking care of customers, making sure that they enjoy the meal or getting them something more to their liking. Price, portion and quality are all better than most. Restaurant is clean and cost when they aren't slammed by customers. Highly recommended, if you're in the area and want Mexican food, this is the place. read more

My friend and I along with 2 toddlers and a 10 year old dined here. True enough that would be a party of 5 but, we were 2 adults with children and received our bill only to notice that we were charged a 22% gratuity for a party of 5 or more. I don't recall seeing anything about this on the menu (doesn't mean that it wasn't there) but our waitress certainly didn't mention it to us at all. The service wasn't that great and definitely wasn't worth a 22% gratuity. On top of the 22% gratuity charge there was also an almost 4% charge for not paying with cash assuming that we wouldn't be paying with cash. On the bill it stated that there would be a discount for the same percentage of the non cash fee for those who paid with cash. I feel that this is a complete ripoff. Over 25% of additional charges added to my bill without me knowing prior to dining. I will not be dining at this restaurant ever again. What a scam. read more

My daughter and I dropped in for a late lunch. We beat the dinner rush so it wasn't crowded at all. We were seated right away. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. The food itself was pretty good. I got the birria quesadilla. The birria sauce was very rich and flavorful. My daughter ordered 3 soft tacos (they're good sized) and inhaled them with no complaints. I loved their chunky guacamole. It beats the blended stuff in my opinion. I expected more spice but will def be back to try other items. I really liked this place. The environment was upbeat yet intimate. Probably the best Michealda I've had in a long time! Reasonable prices. The street tacos were delicious.. not dry at all. The staff was accommodating and friendly. The only thing keeping me from giving 5 stars was the food rice and beans.... but you know what... I hate them! They were still good. Ok. I rarely write reviews. Especially bad ones. But what they're doing is unethical at the least, illegal at worst. Unsure if what they're doing is intentional or not, but people need to be aware. First off, service was terrible. I was there tonight and we sat outside. We appeared to be one of the only tables at the restaurant at the time. Server had no clue how to answer any questions. We were a table of 2 and wanted to know what vegetables came in the quesadilla. He told us what he "thought" was in there. Fine. Whatever. My friend ordered them. Server disappeared for over 30 minutes. When we finally saw him again, we asked for the bill. In all transparency, we didn't pay much attention to the charges, asked him to split the bill evenly, and gave him our cards. This is where things get really weird. As I went to sign and add a tip, I noticed he had already factored in a 22% tip for himself. Apparently, they auto grat 22% on tables of 5 or more. We were a table of 2. This made us look deeper at the charges. They also charged us a 4% premium on the subtotal for not paying cash. Didn't see that posted anywhere. On the bottom of the bill it says a 3.99% DISCOUNT will be applied to the subtotal if paying cash. Which means that if we're paying by card, our subtotal should have been left as is. But they charged a 3.99% FEE for using a card. Are they doing this on purpose and hoping people won't notice? Sales tax rate is 7% in this zip code. The sales tax was calculated off of the subtotal PLUS the non-cash fee. Which means they actually charged us a 9% sales tax (on top of the 3.99% fee). And then charged us for a 22% tip. We asked the server to explain and he couldn't. We asked for a manager multiple times and were told "she's here but she's dealing with some stuff and isn't able to walk or stand up. I'll go talk to her and see what she says". We asked if we could go speak with her to explain the issue. He said no. He then came back and told us "she said not to worry about it, everything will be voided". But wouldn't give us copies of voided receipts. Long story short, we'll see if this gets refunded. If you choose to dine here, please pay attention to your bill. Unless you don't care about a restaurant overcharging unsuspecting customers. It was a twilight zone experience and not one I'll be repeating anytime soon. read more

When my wife and I ate here the first time it was when the place had first opened. I can't say that I liked it all that well because it seemed a bit on the bland side. Lately however it seems like they have stepped up their game. We went in the other day and the food was tasty this time around. The service was super friendly and they had suggestions of what to try. The food came out quick. It definitely adds to the downtown area of Spartanburg. The decorum is more of a dating place than a family place. The location is great. The food was... not great. We came with a large group and were very understanding. A big family of Mexican food lovers who appreciate our servers, and mostly wanted to enjoy the outdoor seating. We are far from picky people. I know things get messed up with a large group... but when 7 or 8 orders out of 12 are incorrect from what's on the menu? Orders that should have came with two of something (per the menu) came with one. Almost every dish had missing ingredients, and not just one or two but many of them. One burrito looked like a sad taco, folded in half with a comically huge tortilla and a street taco's worth of meat with nothing else. The shrimp fajitas said "shrimp, mushroom, zucchini, onion, tomato, bell pepper." I asked for no pepper, tomato (due to dietary issues - I'm sorry it's annoying) and got a large fajita pan of shrimp with about 3 onions worth of onions. A sauce someone ordered tasted like dirt and burnt cayenne pepper. Many looked unappetizing, most were unfinished. The only main dish that was enjoyed (and looked good!) were the steak tacos. Drinks were good, chips plentiful, and our group enjoyed the guacamole. We didn't complain - there were so many issues it wasn't worth it. The staff seemed to almost know it wasn't great, seemed disheartened. I want to give a business the benefit of the doubt... there are issues with getting ingredients these days, staffing is hard, customers are rude. I don't want to see a business fold. This place needs work. The menu was too big, trying to do too many things, and their brand of Americanized Mexican was not good. If you're good at tacos and guac (like the steak tacos!) go with that, Mezcal!!! The old menu here on yelp looks really good! Or if you want to do the Americanized thing... make a smaller menu you can change with things you excel at, ingredients you can get. Without a doubt, there is a plethora of Mexican restaurants in Spartanburg for you to choose from. So why Mezcal? Well, its smack dab in the middle of a booming downtown that you can't help but be proud of. Also, it's got an atmosphere that you won't find at any of the other taco joints in town. PLUS they've taken Mexican fare to the next. level. ​You'll be blown away by the signature look of this restaurant! The tables are pre-set with beautiful green and blue tableware which immediately set the air of fine-dining. At the same time, the service was friendly and relaxed, so I felt right at home. With any new restaurant you might expect a wait, and we were seated right away, but were told that the food would take about 30-40 minutes. Cue the drinks and apps! They have a fabulous selection of wine and beer (lots of RJ Rockers!), plus cocktails for every craving. Our drinks arrived promptly and we went ahead and put in an order of the seasonal guacamole featuring goat cheese and walnuts, plus the traditional Queso Fundido. They have a version of queso with spicy chorizo and craft beer that I can't wait to try next time! The seasonal guacamole was unexpected and so yummy - the goat cheese gave it a tangy and creamy twist, plus the walnuts added a crunch that I never knew guacamole needed. The queso was as queso always is - comforting and scrumptious and I'd like a straw for this please. They come with standard corn chips, but the star of both apps was the fried pita chips dusted with spices. Plus you can add naan bread which is a brilliant variation. From the Tapas menu, we tried the Stuffed Pepper: a crab stuffed poblano pepper wrapped in jalapeno bacon. I'm a huge spice fan, so I was not disappointed by this smoky hot flavor explosion of crab and pork. And the Empanaditas are exactly what they sound like - adorable little empanada bites featuring chicken, braised short rib and pork belly, all smothered in a mango habanero glaze. You can easily share these, but you won't want to. The Huaraches come with a variety of toppings like pork belly and carne asada (below), but they all start with a grilled corn masa dough base. While it was a bit thick, it was a tasty compliment to the steak, black beans, fried avocado (yes), and chimichurri crème fraiche (double yes). The assortment of sides you can choose from is extensive, from jasmine rice with saffron and smoked paprika, to grilled corn on the cob with chipotle mayo and cilantro, to this amazing Ensalada de Nopales: roasted cactus, red cabbage, red onions, habanero peppers, tomatoes and cilantro. The roasted cactus was smoky and succulent, and such a welcome surprise on a menu in Spartanburg. ​The food didn't take nearly as long as anticipated, everything was delivered by gracious staff, and it's never a bad thing when you are pleasantly surprised by the amount on the check at the end of a mouthwatering meal. Food is good, however I had a very bad experience with service twice now. I literally sat with my wife 10 minutes BEFORE someone came to the table. I went to the bar and order drinks and sat down. I then went back and got water. I then went back and got nachos and cheese all of this BEFORE the waitress came to the table. Had three tacos, wedge salad chips with cheese and salsa. Food was good, better than the regular Mexican food we find everywhere. Other than really slow service in the beginning it was fine. Oops forgot to mention there was a small bug in the lettuce but that was most likely shipped the the restaurant that way. ..----- 2/6/2019 Update- changed original rating to a five star tonight. I've gone by this spot several times when walking downtown and I've always wanted to go in because it looks super classy and different than your average mexican restaurant. We chose to sit inside and the restaurant looks very nice and modern. We had the pineapple water and the mezcal trio as an appetizer. The water itself was so good I didn't even want to get a cocktail. The mezcal trio is bean and cheese dip and guacamole. They also give you salsa before you order anything. The bean and cheese dip were pretty good and thick not runny. The guacamole was very fresh and tasted great but it was more cut up than mashed. For meals we both got taco dinners one pastor and then one street tacos. You can choose 2 or 3 tacos and it may not say it in the menu but it comes with rice and beans. The tacos were great. They're pretty big sized and the meat itself is delicious. I was very happy and pleased I came to try this restaurant and will be back! read more

Lunch visit: I thought it was good and interesting. The food certainly has a ring of authenticity and is not "typical" Mexican food. The staff was hit and miss. Our waitress was very good, others seemed purposely hip and pretentious. Portions are fine. The food itself was tasty, although I have had better. My Huaraches Carne Asada seemed to lack something - not sure if it was the playing or the taste or what, but it was "fine." The guacamole was "fine." Prices were ok - it's an upscale place so I'm not fussing. I'll go back and try something else. It's certainly a welcome change for downtown. I think as the restaurant team gets their sea legs it will be very good. 3.5 stars. Looking forward to dinner soon! read more

I really enjoyed this new spot in downtown Sparkle City. Full disclosure, it's not your typical Mexican restaurant! You're not going to see a Speedy Gonzalez or combinations on this menu. However, don't let that turn you away because the food is very flavorful and fairly inexpensive for the quality! Only been once but i really enjoyed the following items: 1. Elote Bites 2. Brisket Taco 3. Carintas Pork Belly Taco 4. Traditional Queso and Chips *My One nitpick is I wish the chocolate sauce on the churro's was hot instead of cold.
