My fiancé and I stopped here for lunch today and I doubt we will be back. We got seated right away on the back deck, which is where all of the other diners were seated as well. Once we sat down we waited 10 minutes for our server to come over to us. Since we had waited so long before being greeted we already knew what we wanted and placed our order. My fiancé also ordered a beer, which took another 10 minutes to be brought to him. Our food (which was two chicken sandwiches) took over an HOUR to come out. The waitress apologized a few times for the food taking so long and blamed it on the kitchen being "slammed" because all of the tables came at the same time. Yes, it's called lunch time. And since I had an hour to sit around while waiting for my food (and hungrily watching others get their food) I can tell you exactly how many people were there. There were 17 people there, including us. One table of 8, one of 3, and three of 2. And every single person ordered a sandwich, a burger, or a salad. There is no reason that any of those things should take an hour to be cooked, even with the table of 8. If your kitchen can't handle 17 orders without the kitchen being backed up for an hour, you need to hire more staff. Aside from the food taking forever to come out, the waitress only came back every 20 minutes or so to check on drinks. My fiancé had to flag her down several times. All I had to drink was water and I never got a refill. We also got no utensils or napkins. I had to ask twice for napkins and by the time they were brought to me I had resorted to using the cocktail napkin that my drink was on instead. I will say that the server was nice and attempted to apologize for the ridiculously long wait, as well as comped one of my fiancé's drinks for us. Just ate there on Friday October 12 with my wife. My wine glass was dirty so I requested a new glass. The waitress got me a new glass, but it appeared to be just as dirty. Lots of gnats flying around. That always turns us off when we eat out. Side Mezzo salad and bread were very good. For the main course I got a pasta dish with scallops, shrimp and a spicy red sauce. It wasn't very good but I ate it anyway. My wife got salmon. The salmon had an bad smell and after taste. It wasn't edible. The dish came with a cold vegetable farro salad. It was odd to have a cold side with warm salmon. The menu didn't mention it was served cold. The waitress took the salmon dish off the bill since it wan't eaten. We appreciated her doing that. Mezzo has to be one of the most overrated places in Middletown. The service leaves more than a little to be desired. The few times I've tried to eat there the wait was long and not worth it, especially considering how many great places there are to eat in town. Even if you are going for a drink, good luck getting attention from the bartender if there are more than three people at the counter. From what I've tried of the food, it is tasty, but the portion sizes are extremely small. One example: I ordered lobster sliders with a friend and for fifteen dollars we received two mini potato bread buns with the tiniest dab of lobster and mayo in the center-- pathetic. While the downstairs appears classy and the outside patio area is really nice, the upstairs is a nightclub scene, which is fashioned for twelve year olds going to a school dance. I have seen how both the upstairs and the downstairs bathroom have been treated in this place, and I have sworn off using bathrooms at bars ever since. read more

Been to Mezzo several times, always a good meal and friendly service. However, this past Saturday our server, Kimberly, was horrible! Arrived early, 5-ish, place was all but empty. Sat outside, beautiful evening. Within 3 minutes of giving us our cocktails and the menu she came back for our dinner order. Told her to give us a few to look over the menu, maybe pick out an appetizer or two...there were 4 of us....Maybe have a few sips of our cocktails... She was literally back at the table in 2-3 minutes. Again, told her to come back in a few. Got our appetizers, delicious, but in swooped Kimberly and took away a plate we were still picking on, came back IMMEDIATELY to take our dinner order! Unbelievable. Again told her we were not in a hurry. it's not like people were waiting for tables! We ordered dinner, everything was excellent, perfectly cooked and, yes, Kimberly hovered nearby and interrupted us at least three times while eating. By this time we were ready to go somewhere else for an after dinner drink, couldn't take her any more. She brought us our tab and true to form was back in minutes to get check, asked if we were all set and I said, totally annoyed, NO!!! She finally went away, we got the check together then stood around waiting to pay. She came by, we gave her the check w/payment and she turned around and walked away, didn't even say thank you. We had an otherwise great meal. If you go there change your seat if you are seated in her section. She's enough to ruin your dinner and was rude in the end. read more

I never went here for food. I came here mostly for drinks and dancing. For a place that I could walk to from my house, it was pretty decent; awesome patio during the summer and 60% of the music was great. I always recommended it for my friends who came from out of town and wanted a night out without having to drive to Hartford (funnily enough, my thumbnail pic is my friend and I on the upstairs back porch). The few complaints I do have are somewhat glaring.; I never saw a server out on the floor. That being said, there were times when there was a mess on the floor, such as when a glass was dropped and would shatter; usually, it was up to anyone else standing around to clean it up, whether it be someone who wasn't responsible for said glass shattering or if it was someone who was completely intoxicated who should not be touching broken glass. Or better yet, it would just stay there, on the ground, until someone noticed. Or didn't. In addition to this, I've never seen the bathrooms there clean. Not once. Someone would puke in the bathroom, or there would just be a plethora of drinks just left in the stalls or sinks, along with piles of toilet paper soaking on the damp floor; never was there anyone cleaning them. I understand that it gets busy, especially on weekend nights, but still; I don't think anyone should be washing my hands around glass bottles that are stacked into the sinks, or make sure I don't trip over coils of TP. I really think there should be someone(s) assigned to cleaning the bathrooms every few hours on the weekends (as heinous as the job may be. I can only manage what the aftermath must be like after everyone has left). I would say that the awesome thing about the place is that the locale is conveniently close and the dance floors are nice. They did a great job redoing the club upstairs and I love the back porch overlooking the tiki bar. Recently there's been some sort of capacity cap on the place, and perhaps they need it in order to run the place more efficiently and safely and if that's the case, good on them. Unfortunately I just don't think it's worth me standing in line for 30+ minutes, or from what I've heard from other regulars, being turned away at 10:30pm and told to come back at 12:30. There were 5 of us what went for dinner and to see colleague playing in band at Mezzo. Were not able to be seated outside with band... all empty tables they claimed were reserved. After much discussion, the very nice waitress offered to comp first round of drinks for having to stay inside Shortly afterward, we realized my husband sat on gum (on their chair) which string around all over his pants with a big wad on the pocket. Extremely gross!!! They offered NO help but waiter bringing app. said he would give us a round of drinks. At this point, a manager should have come to apologize. Then the waitress, feeling sorry for us, moved us to a "reserved" table outside. We asked for the manager...none came. We ordered dinner. BIG mistake. Food was fair to just bad. Petite steaks ($22) were in fact "petite", cold and cooked wrong (ie. med was well-done), served on about a cup of mashed potatoes and 6 carrot slices. Pasta was just plain tasteless. Salad entree was ok. We all felt that any complaints at this point was a waste of time. The waitress was trying very hard to please us but the restaurant was BAD. Mezzo grill has a pretty good atmosphere and a nice patio... HOWEVER, unfortunately their management is shady and very unpleasant to deal with. The other night they took my credit card, told me it was declined, took my debit card and charged both. When I realized this I called and was told to call back three separate times. Finally I was told that I had to print out my statements and visit the restaurant to have this fixed. I went in once and was told that it was "in the middle of the dinner rush" even though the manager did not appear that busy. Annoyed I came back the next day at the exact time he asked. I was told that the manager that day would not be in for 30 minutes! I waited around hoping to settle things for the final time and when the manager did finally come in I was given about 20 second of his time where he told me that he didn't have time to fix things that day, took my information down and said he would reverse the charge. Never saw this money again and I went on vacation the next week so by the time I got back I decided it wasn't worth my time to continue this nonsense. The thing is that while this is all related to the one initial double charge I was treated poorly on the phone and in person consistently over many separate occasions. Never received a single apology, wasted my time, and lost my money. It really is a shame that terrible and unfriendly management ruin this venue. read more

This place continues to go downhill. Everyone goes because of the mixed environment and crowds but they have some of the worst management I've ever seen. It's extremely dirty on the weekend nights. They choose not to clear off tables all night and would rather leave the floor a mess with drinks, cups and trash everywhere. Overpriced and overrated. Terrible service. I've been both a bartender and a waitress and was appalled by our surly bartender. One member of our group had been waiting 20 minutes to get a drink. This was on an evening where there were perhaps 12 people including our group at the bar. No one else in the restaurant. I waved at the bartender who looked at me and then WALKED AWAY. Ten minutes later I went and got a manager. The bartender then came to get our drink orders and when my friend said she had been waiting half an hour said "I don't think so" and walked away again. Keep in mind we are all in our 30's, hospital professionals, polite and sober etc. I will never go back. There are much better places to get after work drinks and food at in Middletown!!!! read more

What disappointing experience! Went to have a light bite for dinner. Had to ask for menus after being seated for 15 minutes. 20 minutes later got to put in our order. Wine arrived in a dirty glass and the Mexican mule in a tin cup...what?? No copper cup?? No bread in the house when asked for something to hold us over. Waitress tried hard to satisfy, but waited almost 1/2 hour for my salad which was ordered with scallops arrived with chicken. My friend was 3/4 the way done with her over greasy cooked fish and chips when my scallops arrived raw, 20 minutes later. Manager dickers with me about how they are perfectly cooked and pan seared, " I watched the chef cook them" when they were clearly deep fried. If they were pan seared, why were they uniformly dark brown on all sides? Scallops should at least be somewhat white inside not opaque. And do not fight with your customer and lie. Especially one who is a CHEF by trade and more experience in the industry than your managers age. They comped the meal, but I never will eat there again. This past Friday I went to Mezzo with my wife and a few of my friends. I was the designated driver so I had no drinks that night. I was standing on the patio when a bouncer came barreling through screaming that he was going to "break whoever was smoking weed in half" - we saw the kids smoking nearby us but of course in a group of white kids he points out the 28 year old black guy standing with his wife. The bouncer looks me up and down then turns around in frustration. Shortly after, he comes back to me and decided that my "chain" (thin gold necklace) needed to be put away under my shirt. I saw plenty of people with simple necklaces on throughout the night. Don't want to make it about race, but why was I the one singled out? I've had so many experiences with bouncers being rude here- and I understand they have a tough job dealing with the drunk college kids, but it doesn't mean you treat EVERYONE like cattle. I honestly know mezzo wont even care about this review, because they have hundreds of other kids to give them money, but this isn't a place to go if you want any respect from the people working there. Maybe rather than letting some of these people get so out of control and belligerent, they should train their bartenders to cut some of them off. Now that I'm older and have been to the plenty of other awesome places 2 blocks away I have no idea why anyone still comes here. I recently went there last weekend and they had a spacious outdoor patio area with a DJ and an outside bar. It was so much fun! I'm Not one to write reviews about restaurants or any place at all, even if they are horrendous, but this place was SOOOOOOO bad that I felt it was my citizen's duty to warn people not to go here. This place gets 1 star from me, only because its not possible to go negative. We were in CT for the weekend for a birthday gathering/reunion and our friend who was part of our group told us that this was the "best outdoor place" to go for group gatherings...this couldn't have been father from the truth. We had a reservation, but were still ignored for a good forty minutes before our server even came over. She had no idea about the food menu, no idea about the "cocktail menu", (they seemed to be out of all of their specialty cocktails, which is confusing..especially on a saturday night, why offer one at all) We made a joke of asking the server if they had any alcohol left, or what they did have, and she replied seriously that she didn't know.....(facepalm) We ended up settling on ordering generic drinks, gin and tonics and vodka sodas, and bud lights, because thats all our server seemed to be able to grasp. Her attitude was terrible and we kept see her whizzing by our table without giving us our drinks, and now had been there for an hour...Should we have known to get our drinks ourselves? They are lucky that we hadn't seen each other in a long time, so our group was fine entertaining each other by laughing about 1. How horrible and trashy this place was, 2. How uneducated and atrocious our "server" was. (put in quotes because I can't actually call her that) , 3. How they offer a cocktail menu thats pretty much non existent .Flash forward to the food, I would have loved to review all the food that our group ordered but we only received half of it. Not sure what happened to the other half. At this point we were over finding the hilarity in all of this and asked to speak to a manager. Our server told us She didn't know where he was and hadn't seen him in a while (...Go find him then???) Our server then disappeared for another twenty minutes and we assumed she was going to go find a manager, only to reappear those twenty minutes later sans a Manager, and she asked us if we want more drinks. No...we don't want anymore drinks we want a manager, but never mind, we don't even want the manager we just want the bill. I'm from NYC so I don't mind paying New York Prices, but in a place like this, where your drink comes half an hour late with melted ice cubes, $9 for a gin and tonic is absurd...who does this place think they are.....seriously uneducated staff, outrageous bar prices for awful drinks and a specialty cocktail list that doesn't exist (just like the places managers) ....the cap on all of it was the weird attitudes of all the staff, they act like you're interrupting their night by being there. My friend was really embarrassed and upset and spent the whole night apologizing that she recommended we all go here, she said last summer it was completely different (She usually has really good recommendations and taste, so we can't hold this one against her) I guess a lot can change from one summer to the next. Never been here for the food, I've really only been for the night life. Stopped going quite a while back though. However, I decided to give it a shot last weekend. I ordered some type of tropical margarita from the bar downstairs. The bartender automatically gave my friend and I attitude off the bat. I got my drink and nearly choked from how much of one ingredient she put in the drink, so I just asked if she could please lighten it up for me and her answer was "Um well did you not read the ingredients? Guess ill remake it for ya" and put it back down on the bar and walked away before I could even say whether it was okay or not. Gee, thanks hun! Mezzo seems to get mixed reviews, which I can't understand because honestly I think it's Middletown's "Catch All" Restaurant. At Mezzo, you can have a sit down meal, or a drink at the bar, or listen to live music at the tiki bar, or catch a comedy show, or even dance at the club. It has the most variety of any restaurant in Middletown. Mezzo also has a nice mix of ages and crowds. It's not unsual to see a 21-year old hipster sitting at the same bar with a middle-aged mom. The food is decent for a night out, but my personal favorite thing about Mezzo is the outdoor space. It's mulit-leveled, and a really unique setting. Great place for a summer drink! read more

My friends and I decided to try out Mezzo's after hearing some mixed reviews so on a week night, we gathered 6 of us to have dinner there. When we arrived, the restaurant was empty and we were seated right away with menus. The server didn't approach the table for about 15 minutes after we had been staring at the menus. We ordered bar drinks, appetizers and our meals all at once. She disappeared and returned about 20 minutes later with our drinks and then vanished again. A number of different servers dropped off our appetizers and dinners during the rest of our meal, not a single one stopping back to check on us or offer us any sort of service. My friends had to physically go to the bar to order refills on drinks because no one was paying any attention to us! When we were done with our meals, we sat with dirty dishes and empty cups for a good 20 minutes before the server reappeared to drop off the check. If we hadn't flagged her down 10 minutes later, she probably wouldn't have remembered to collect payment for at least another half hour. It pained us all to leave a 15% tip. Aside from the atrociously bad service, the food was edible at best. The only reason I'm rating this place 2 stars is because my apple pie bomb drink was phenomenal! We were looking a restaurant that offered outside seating in Middletown so I went to yelp for suggestions. After reading the yelp reviews for Mezzos, we were a bit hesitant to go, but decided to give it a shot anyway! As soon as we walked into the restaurant we were warmly greeted with a friendly smile and asked how our Sunday afternoon was going - we were taken to a table outside, per our request. Our server came right over with waters and asked for our drink order. I ordered a Diet Coke and it tasted a little funny (maybe to much seltzer) so I let the server know, he quickly brought me a new drink which tasted much better. We ordered the garlic knots for an appetizer, they were very good- warm, garlicky with a nice side of marinara sauce. My husband and I saw on the menu that they had a chicken and steak philly- we really didn't want to have the combination of both steak and chicken so we asked if they could just make us a steak philly. They were very accommodating and more than happy to make just the steak philly without the chicken for us. The steak had peppers, mushrooms, onions and American cheese. The steak was tasty with nice flavor, We were pleasantly surprised that there was a substantial amount of ingredients on the grinder... We were more than happy with our server and meals. Not only was our server fantastic but all of the servers were filing empty water glasses and clearing tables, it didnt appear to matter who's table it was.- In our opinion, that was clearly great team work!!! The only improvement that I would suggest is the young man that came around to help clear the tables had the customers put their own dirty dishes into the black dish buckets, he literally placed the bucket on the table and said if you are finished with your plate you can put it in here- which in my opinion is not the customers responsibility but rather theirs. This was just one minor observation that I made that could use improvement, other than that we were extremely pleased with Mezzo's this evening. We also enjoyed the band that was playing.... I've been here 4 times so far and I've only heard about it in May. I have only come on a Saturday and for the nightlife so can't say anything about the food. Every time I have come the drinks are good and the bartenders are fast and attentive. They're really good at seeing who hasn't gotten a drink yet and they make great drinks. The music has been good and the place gets super busy. Last night was the first time I had to wait, almost an hour, to get in so definitely a good idea to get there before 10:30pm. Service was awesome. Food was okay. My friend and I had steamers and fried calamari. That was all good. But, the clam chowder was horrible. There was way too much black pepper in it that made it way too spicy. The coloring of the soup wasn't right either. It had a yellowish tint to it. I thought that was weird. There were not a lot of clams or potatoes it in either. Steak was also covered in black pepper, so I could not eat that either. The decor of this place is nice. However, I am not sure that I would go back there again. read more
