Hello, I attended a baby shower at Tates in Middletown this past Sunday and wanted to share what an incredible job Kaylee did throughout the event. She was attentive from start to finish, consistently checking in around the room to make sure everything was taken care of and that guests had what they needed. One thing that especially stood out was her ability to read the room. When the mom-to-be began thanking guests, Kaylee thoughtfully lowered the music volume without being asked, allowing everyone to hear and enjoy the moment. She was professional, kind, and clearly took pride in providing excellent service. Her attention to detail helped make the event run smoothly and created a wonderful experience for everyone attending. We have wanted to eat here for a long time... you should not wait! We had a casual afternoon lunch. The Weather was beautiful and we sat outside. We were promptly seated by a very nice hostess who just finished at Ohio state and had a nice way about her. Our server was Ashley and I have to say she was great. The kind of server who takes great care of you and anticipates your needs and delivers what you want before you have to ask. So the food... I have never gotten in a fight over an appetizer but I came close that day. My wife and I fought for the last of the amazing bite of the ahi Tuna nachos... I mean really wow. The service and ambiance truly stole the show here. The entrance is beautifully designed and tucked behind a sliding bookshelf, which makes it feel like a hidden gem. Inside, the tables are simply yet tastefully decorated with candles throughout, creating a cozy atmosphere. Even the bathrooms were thoughtfully decorated and adorable and no detail was overlooked. They offer a great variety of seating options, including bar seating, high top tables, standard height tables, and window seating, so you can really choose the vibe you are going for. During the winter, they even have lit igloos outside so you can stay warm while sitting by the river, which is such a unique touch. My waitress was also tending bar, yet she remained prompt and attentive the entire time. She gave me space to look over the menu without making me feel rushed, but never disappeared long enough for me to wonder where she was. Even as it got busy, she handled everything seamlessly. The service was excellent. However, I honestly wish I could say the food lived up to the atmosphere, because the ambiance definitely sets high expectations. I ordered the short rib risotto and would probably give it a 6 out of 10. The risotto itself was fine but could have used more flavor, maybe something earthy like mushrooms to bring it together. The short rib was cooked well, but it lacked the depth of flavor I was hoping for. Overall, the dish did not quite come together as a cohesive plate. It was not bad by any means, it just felt like it was missing something. I also ordered the Italian Gabagool Sub with salami, capicola, mortadella, provolone, lettuce, tomato, roasted garlic, olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper. It had all the right components and sounded amazing on paper, but it ended up tasting fairly bland. Typically an Italian sub has bold dressings and seasoning that really make it pop, and this one just did not quite hit that mark. Love this place but I have to admit I was a bit disappointed with my 40 something dollar lobster roll.. I didn't have the most attentive waiter either. I had to flag him down to order a drink, then flag him down to order. My friend was really late, but we had to flag him down again to get her order too... it was busy, but still... I did however go to the fireworks on the river for the Fourth of July and that was well worth the price! We got drinks only, but it wasn't super crowded, we had access to clean bathrooms instead of port-a-potties that they have for the general public. Nice place to hang out without driving an hour to sit along the river and boat watch. Sit out side with a nice breeze under umbrella topped tables or sit inside in the AC at the bar. Bar seats all face towards windows that have a nice view of the river. Great Drinks, Tuna Nachos for your appetizer.....And many great entree choices went with falafel and Salmon bowl. I've come back here many times and really enjoy it every time. I most recently came here twice in less than a month. Both times I got the Vodka Sauce Cutlet sandwich with caesar salad and its amazing. Their CT lobster role is really great as well. The drink I got was the Spice in Paradise (or Spice is Nice, something like that) with pineapple and tequila. Very delicious! Their outdoor patio is really nice too be whats cool is even sitting by the bar inside there is a huge window overlooking the water which is gorgeous. The staff is always friendly and generally there isn't a huge wait here either. read more

I am not sure why it took so long for me to finally check this restaurant out but I am glad I finally did. I did have a hard time using gps to get to the restaurant but once I got there I was glad to see that there was plenty of parking on a private lot. It was a bit too cold to dine outside but there looks to be plenty of outside dining with river views. They did have some heated igloo dining available but we dined indoor. Meet friends for Sunday brunch and had a great time. Service was great and our server was nice. Great portion sizes enough to have left overs. Tate's has quickly become one of our favorite restaurants in town, especially for brunch!! They now have heated Igloos on the patio so that you can continue to enjoy al fresco dining and the view of the Connecticut River even in the winter. We recently went to celebrate my daughter's birthday and she and I had a wonderful time!! There is a heater and blankets as well as a Bluetooth speaker so that you can connect and listen to your own musical playlist. As always, the food was delicious and the mimosas were awesome!! Our waiter was very attentive and when there was a discrepancy in the time limit on their website for the igloo and what we were told, he quickly took care of it and made sure we had the igloo for the full time. There is a $30 fee to reserve the igloo on top of your bill but it was worth the experience. Tate's is definitely a huge improvement from the previous establishment and a great addition to the Middletown food scene! read more

Incredibly festive spot for lunch, brunch or dinner around the holidays. It's right on the water, so you also get a beautifully wintery view. We came in on a Monday afternoon so it was pretty quiet. Our server was very attentive and sweet, and the food came out fast. The clam chowder was recommended, and it was quite good. I also got a tuna melt on gluten-free bread, and it was pretty decent. I'd be curious to come back and try other items on their menu, and maybe their cocktail menu as well. read more

I saw videos about this place and was excited to check it out for the waterfront view. Unfortunately, we weren't able to sit outside since there was a wait, so we sat inside instead (no wait). The restaurant itself is decorated very nicely and has a clean, welcoming atmosphere, but it seems like most people go mainly for the outdoor view; which we didn't get to experience. The menu is pretty limited and nothing really stood out to me. I ended up ordering the salmon bowl, which was actually pretty good, though the rice tasted more like boxed Goya rice than homemade. My drink was solid and our server was friendly, the restaurant started filling up around 4:30-5:00. Overall, the presentation of the restaurant is nice, the food I had was decent, and service was good. I just wish we had been able to sit outside for the view and that the menu had more variety. read more

I finally got the chance to check out Tate's in Middletown CT! I have wanting to go for a while so I am super excited to right this review ! The location is amazing the have a beautiful view of the Connecticut river which you can see from their outdoor patio and inside as well. They also have a great walking area by the water for nice walk before or after your meal ! ( note the outdoor patio is not dog friendly and the restaurant is very busy especially during peak hours .. and they do not currently take reservations ). For a Saturday around 6 we waited about 20-30 min for indoor seating ( about an hour for outdoor seating ) but we were able to sit at the bar until our table was ready , so the wait wasn't bad ! I started with the strawberry daqu-Rita which was very good ! The aperol spritz was amazing highly recommend ! For appetizers we order the peach whipped feta dip which was fabulous ! It came with fresh bread and veggies ( which I loved ) perfect for sharing and was a fan favourite at our table ! I knew it was good because I don't normally like feta .. but I loved this dip ! Next we ordered The buffalo cauliflower which was amazing ( I again normally don't like buffalo because it's too spicy for me ) but this sauce was really good you got the flavour of buffalo without the overwhelming spice ! Highly recommend ( also came with some veggies) For my entree I ordered the Waldorf salad sandwich which was really good too ! It also came with a pickle and a side of fries! The fries were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside which I loved ! Overall 10/10 atmosphere was fabulous perfect for summer with view of the water ! Stopped by Tate's on a Monday to catch happy hour. We really wanted to enjoy the beautiful weather, so we chose to sit outside and skip the specials. The food was excellent. We shared a few appetizers and fish tacos, and everything was flavorful and well done. Just the right amount for two! The plantains were a standout: crispy, sweet, and there were plenty. I even had enough to take home and enjoy later as a midnight snack. The crab cakes were tasty, though smaller than expected (three cakes) but still enjoyable. The fish tacos were fantastic. The fish was super crispy and a nice surprise. Everything was seasoned really well, and the fries were hot and crisp, not an afterthought at all. I had two different beers. Some of the taps were unavailable (it was a Monday after a holiday) but the selection was still solid. My friend had a spicy pineapple cocktail that she loved so much she ordered a second. Sweet, refreshing, and strong enough to keep things interesting. The music they played was great, (2000s mix?) and the vibe outside was relaxed and welcoming. Our server was genuinely awesome with a great energy. One of the coolest parts is the boat dock and we saw a few people actually pulled up by water to grab dinner. Tate's is located right in Harbor Park, so after you eat, you can take a peaceful walk along the river. The whole setup makes it a perfect date night spot or a nice place to unwind with friends. I'm already planning my next visit. I want to try the tuna nachos next, and honestly, based on how good everything was, I'd be happy to work my way through the entire menu. read more

This spot is a local favorite. With its beautiful water front views it is perfect for lunch and dinner. We even love taking our toddler along with us for a date night. Went on a Friday in September around 5 and it wasn't too busy yet. I would say it got busy between 6 and 630. I can't remember our bartenders name but she was great. The Paradise with Spice drink (their version of a spicy marg) was really good, I believe it was $14 so I only got one of those. Happy hour is weekdays at the bar only from 3-6. I wish the happy hour menu had more options. For oyster lovers they have $1 oysters. For food, we ordered the tuna nachos, birria tacos and fish tacos, everything was great. View is awesome too even from the bartop as there are huge windows looking outside. The only downside is that it is a little expensive (which is why I was hoping for a bigger happy hour menu) but I think that's just standard now unfortunately because food prices aren't cheap. Feedback: cocktail menu (not pictured) doesn't have the beer sizes listed so you don't know if it's a pint or 12 ounces, etc. I wish menus were updated online, I couldn't find any happy hour menu information (I saw an older social media reel but the video was too fast to pause and read the menu) and the cocktail menu that I found online was not current. I wish there was an indoor/outdoor bar so you could have the quick bar service or happy hour deals but enjoy sitting outside at the same time. I've been dying to come here and it didn't disappoint. We went for dinner on a Saturday night and waiting only 10 minutes for a seat outside for five people. Our waitress was very nice, she kept coming back and asking how we were. The food was amazing!!!! I got the chicken Caesar sandwich that was great, but I had to try the lemon ricotta rigatoni which I thought was the best dish at the table. Came here for lunch and had a pleasant experience. It's nice that there is somewhere on the river that offers docking for boats - oddly very rare. My friends and I decided to stop by and have a quick bite. We were promptly seated and our waiter came over right away. We ordered a bunch of apps and entrees and everything tastes great. I got the birria tacos and they were so, so delicious which a nice kick. The only issue was the service was a tad slow. Grace our bartender was so much fun and took amazing care of us. Suggestions on food, wine and a wealth of info the flooding precautions. The interior was warm and inviting, bar has a beautiful view. Tate's is the latest incarnation of the incredible flooding restaurant on the banks of the CT river in Middletown. This time around it's been lovingly restored to a pleasant and bright interior. Dining al fresco on the deck is the main attraction. I was there with a friend on a Monday in mid-September and the glorious weather, dramatic clouds and lovely views did not disappoint. Service was good and food and drink were above average. I had the meatball sliders and my companion chose a burger. We were pleased if not ecstatic. The desserts are homemade on premises per our server and the lemon cheesecake with a meringue layer was scrumptious. I wish them well. The location is all but the challenges are many. read more

Of course the ambiance is pretty as it is right on the river. A good place to have an appetizer and cocktails if the weather is nice. Other than that I wouldn't visit for anything else. Took my neighbor to Tate's for her Birthday Lunch [97]. Got a table on the deck under an umbrella and got ready to enjoy a good meal. We both like Lobster Rolls and this was close enough for us with a short drive. She insists on the cold lobster roll and me the hot one. We were both pleased with the service, ambience and food. I think she got more lobster than me but she was probably bragging They both were delicious and filled with great lobster. We also both got the fries; she the regular and me the Piri Piri style. I won that contest as they were delicious and addictive. Her glass of Pinot Grigio was excellent. My Guinness non-alco was a disappointment but live and learn. Came here on a Monday around 7 after going to brownstone. It was insanely busy and we were told if we wanted to eat outside there were 10 other people waitlisted. So we opted to dine inside to cut down on time. Our waitress was in scrambles trying to keep up with the crowd and maintaining her tables, which we understand that's managements issue, not hers. She did her absolute best bopping around the tables. The calamari was good, nothing out of the ordinary. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meals, the chicken tacos were a typical dish but a good bite. By the time we were finishing our food they started packing up for the night and putting chairs on top of tables. We ended up being the last people upon closing but they were nice enough to let us finish our meals while they closed. It would be nice to return for the outside dining on a less crowded night for a fair chance. read more

I was extremely excited to try Tates thinking that finally someone came to that space to build a great restaurant. I was a little let down and that may be because my expectations were do high. We originally wanted to sit on the patio but rain was in forecast so we sat inside. It was a nice effort to add some sound barriers but it was so incredibly loud. At first I sat across from my date but couldn't hear a word being said so I moved to be the side. It was a little better but found myself saying "huh" too much. I ordered a margarita which tasted delicious as they use their own margarita mix and not a mixed one. Unfortunately I only ordered one because it seemed to small for the $10 price tag. My date had a coors light Dinner was good. Steamers for appetizer were very good and perfect amount of seasoning. My coconut mahi was blackened and came with am extremely delicious salsa of pineapple and mango (menu said avocado was part of salsa but it was sliced and placed on top of fish). I'm giving this restaurant 4.5 stars! As many locals know, this location has been around for a while with many different names. Dare I say... Someone has finally gotten it right?! It's bright, CLEAN, no weird smells. Even the bathroom is nice. The menu has a Mediterranean undercurrent, which I love. For you fellow pescetarians, I had a mushroom gyro. Tates was recommended to me by a friend. We had an awesome late lunch/early dinner. Started with an app that was whipped feta with pistachios and peach chutney- mouth watering! My husband got the focaccia grilled cheese that was amazing. I had the hot lobster roll which was a generous serving with clarified butter plus extra butter on the side- fantastic. It was my second lobster roll of the season and it made the first one I had (at SoNo Seafood in Norwalk) look like I grabbed it at a gas station by comparison. Our party of 4 arrived at 4:30PM on Wednesday evening. Joanne seated us at Table 39, where we had a great view of the River and the Middletown High Crew Team practice. The ECBC Lager tap was inop so we ordered cocktails & mocktails...which were very well executed. Our entrees included the Mokey Smashburger, Pulmoki Bowl, Scallop Basket...preceded by an excellent Clam Chowder! Overall, we were very pleased with the food and impressed with the staff.
