If you have a minor roof repair that needs to be done, don't waste your time. It was made clear he's only interested in full roof repairs or trying to talk us into additional work that is unnecessary. If he cannot achieve one of the two while meeting with you, don't expect a quote or a the decency of a timely response. Its unethical that he chooses to cherry pick jobs when a customer in need of a service is ignored bc he simply doesn't want the job. I understand business, if it's not worth your time you can just say so. Neither myself or my husband were rude. It was in assessing the roof, which is leaking in one area at the seam which was warped, Marvin suggested making multiple fixes to additional areas that weren't even leaking. I assume as a pre-emptive measure and I appreciate the suggestion, but who has money to fix things that aren't currently broken. He says he wanted to be invited into my home to have a further look, well I'm sorry sir not in a pandemic. And what for?? We took pictures of the roof ourselves to show him exactly what he would've seen had he come inside for a look. If you plan on using MG Roofing PLEASE read the fine print in the contract! Marvin sent us a contract to replace our roof and informed us he would be stopping by the next morning to pick up the signed contract. My Wife and I looked it over and realized that there was a discrepancy in how long the warranty is. One part of the contract (which was clearly created by him) stated that they would provide a 12-year warranty for their work. Another part of the contract (which was probably created by an attorney) stated that they would provide an 8-year warranty for their work as well. When he arrived I asked him about the discrepancy in the contract and he said that the contract was done by his lawyer. I asked him if he could update the contract to reflect the correct warranty and he got upset because I questioned him about it. He literally stormed out the house after I asked him to do this. As he was leaving I yelled out for him to make the updates and as soon as I receive it I will scan it back to him. He brushed me off and kept going. I haven't heard from him since! I gave him 24-hours before calling him but to no avail. I called him a couple more times and even texted him letting him know I was still waiting on him to return my phone call. Still NOTHING. I'm going to echo my Angie's List review here as using MGR started off great and then faltered in communications and then passed blame off when called out on it: The initial estimation session, quote, and work required sounded great. Marvin arrived early, was very friendly and professional, and made sure we weren't paying for work that wasn't required. However, when the day came to complete the scheduled work, no one showed up. When I emailed to ask if everything was okay, his response was that he was out for the Thanksgiving holiday and that rain made working difficult. We rescheduled to the weekend after Thanksgiving but again no one showed up on the scheduled day. When I reached out after the no-show I never got a reply. The price was excellent and he was very friendly, but after two no-shows with no prior warning and never an apology for missing the work, it's hard to recommend MGR to anyone. He replied to said review saying he emailed and texted (he did not) and that rain prevented work, which it did for the first appointment, but it was bright and sunny on the second. I do not recommend working with him. He's eager to get your business but clearly needs an adjustment in customer relations and project management. read more

Marvin is a great roofer. We've used him in the past for roofing and siding, and when we needed repairs to the old house we are moving into, we knew he'd be the one to call. Our roof needed a new flat part and plenty of repairs to the old slate. Marvin met us there on time and started the work the next day. A few days later, the flat roof was new (and improved with insulation), the rusted galvanized seams were replaced and the cracked slate tiles were replaced. They even cleaned all of the gutters as a free bonus. It looks great, and any of the water damage in the ceiling has stopped. I strongly recommend him. read more

On June 10, MG came out to put on a new roof, first I am always skeptical about contractor because in the past they always do "so-so work" then I have to call them back to finish something....Well we had to wait 4 weeks to get resources together and we wasn't going with a rinks donkey company. Excellent work and service - Marvin is very straightforward and takes lots of pictures - before and after the job. He is good at explaining what needs to be done and knows his stuff. He'll show you sample projects of other jobs he does so you know what to expect on yours. When his crew shows up, all you need to do is let them in - they got the job done quickly and you get updates to your email as they go. We have a typical DC rowhouse and they replaced the entire roof membrane, insulation, plus replaced a few rotting boards all in one day. Price is reasonable and comes with a warranty. MG Roofing installed a brand new roof for us about a month ago. I contacted MG Roofing and met with the owner Marvin the following day. Marvin was extremely personable and emailed a quote within 15 minutes after inspecting the roof. He mentioned that he could start the job the following week and to email/call him if we wished to proceed. I also met with four other contractors. Some of the other contractors prices were competitive while others were much higher. Excellent work. Marvin is pleasant, straightforward, and knowledgable. He takes photos every step of the way to show the process and the progress. He documented the condition of the roof and explained what was wrong: the wrong type of membrane on a flattish roof, full of holes, bad installation of flashing around chimney, which needed repointing. His men were polite, cheerful, and competent. They ripped off the old membrane, replaced 280 feet of damaged 2 x 6" boards, installed a 180 white granule membrane, repointed chimney and rebuilt the dome, and installed two new roof vents. Price was reasonable and well explained. I didn't like the look of the metal flashing along the roof line, so he is sending someone to paint it to match the shingles.The work was completed within four days of calling him. In July I decided to contact this company because I had a roof leak. If you thoroughly look through the reviews of this company (including on yelp) you will see that the owner is both RUDE AND CONDESCENDING. However, all I really cared about was the job being done so I ignored this-big.mistake. 1.) After I signed the contract Marvin took forever to complete the work and each time I contacted him he sounded irritated. 2.) When the workers showed up to my house they went straight to my roof without letting me know that they had arrived. When I discussed this with Marvin he said "They are there to work not for you." Is that how you talk to customers? 3.) After waiting forever for the job to be done, paying thousands, and dealing with his horrible customer service he did me a "favor" by resealing the flashing for my porch with caulk. After this was done white caulk was left on the front of my house and the workers never asked for paint to cover it up. 4.) I noticed this the next day and Marvin stated to leave the paint on the porch and that they would get to it as they go down their list. How about you just finish the job that we agreed to? I met with Marvin at a property I manage in DC to get an estimate for a skylight repair. He was quite nice, took measurements, explained the work that was needed, and told me he would send me the estimate by early to middle of the next week. When I did not hear from him, I called him to ask where the estimate was. He didn't seem to remember meeting with me the week before, but he assured me he would follow up as soon as he got back to the office. I also followed up by email. Never heard back from him. I have to say that I was very impressed with the job they did. We had leaks in the house and the owner came over and showed us exactly where they were coming from and why we needed to do what we did. His prices were very very reasonable (they only charged me $5500 for a brand new roof!). His employees did the work exactly when they were supposed to do it and we were very happy with the results. I got a recommendation for MG Roofing from a friend of mine who found them on Angie's List. My roof started leaking during a recent heavy rain and I quickly called 4 different companies. Marvin was the first to answer and quickly scheduled me for a free estimate. He showed up on time the next day and was very professional from start to finish. Less than 24 hours after his visit, I had a written email estimate that explained everything in detail. He answered many of my questions and concerns over email and through a follow up phone call. I was worried about future rain and asked Marvin how soon I could schedule (this was 5pm on Thursday). He literally came the NEXT DAY after getting the permit from DCRA and replaced my entire roof that same day. He walked me through the whole job with lots of pictures and explanations about everything. I couldn't believe how many old roofs were lying on top of my house. The amount of trash was unreal. READ ALL OF THIS. If I could leave zero stars I would. I congratulate all those who have had a good experience but mine starts in 2014 and ends this week (11/8/18). In 2014, MG Roofing replaced the gutters on my house. They used bigger downspouts from those replaced & after negotiation, Mr. Garcilazo seemed genuine in wanting to make up for that & other errors. He agreed to give me 2 yrs free gutter cleaning (never happened). Later I used them to replace my roof. He came with the shingle card for me to pick replacement shingles. I decided on a new red roof. MG left men at my house at 7am every morning until completed. They started work on the back of my house which not visible from the front and is completely forested in the back. The men started the roofing on the back. When they got to the front, I notice the shingles were grey, not red. I was given a discount on the grey roof because otherwise, they would have had to pull up shingles on the entire back of the house. In the end, after further dispute, I sent a final payment to Mr. Garcilazo & he cashed it. I was not a good ending, but I had a new roof with a 12 yr warranty. Fast forward to Hurricane Michael (9/28). Water is leaking from what looks to be my skylights. I have someone who looks & tells me that nails from the roof are protruding into the house & water is seeping in. Not clear how long this has been going on or the full damage without pulling up the shingles. I decide to use my warranty & call MG. After some song & dance Mr. G comes to my house & determines that yes, his guys messed up. Tells me he will send a team, which he did after dickering over setting a time and a date. The team shows 2 hrs before time, speaks no English. I text Mr. G who tells me that they don't need to speak English because they know exactly what to do. The team goes up on the roof appears to take up the tiles, removes the nails, & puts the tile back down. Inside the house, the frame of the skylight is hanging down. The next rain, water is coming in even faster. I call MG. He tells me to give him a date & he will stop by. He comes (10/15) and says he will send another team to do the work. Except he refuses to schedule. November comes and he has been telling me every 2 days since 10/15 that he will come. Finally on 11/4, when he agreed to show up but didn't (with no call or reschedule), he tells me by text: "Will do it on Monday I'm still honoring the warranty even that you did pay the cost of it When I could void it legally And on top you are very rude and disrespectful at the same time" This is the guy who has dodged setting a date to fix a problem that he created for a whole month! I have never spoken one rude or disrespectful word to this man. On the other hand, I am not at all happy about what is happening. Nov. 5 No show/no word. Rains all day (what roofer doesn't know it will rain when they schedule?) Water leaking in house. Nov. 6 6:18am "Do you want skylight fix today Need to know before 7am" Nov. 7 "We can do the flashing tomorrow 7am." Huh? Why is there NO FLASHING? Why didn't they do that the first time? This is his verbatim text answer: "U not answering my question. Do you want us to do the area. That you say is leaking. And fix the trim. Or you lied about this is leaking.? All I need is a yes or no I'm not texting after this any more." MAN JUST ACCUSED ME OF LYING ABOUT WATER LEAKING INTO MY HOME WHEN HE KNOWS THAT 1) HIS MEN DID A BAD JOB INITIALLY; 2) HIS MEN DID A BAD JOB SECONDARILY; 3) I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO GET HIM TO DO THIS FOR A MONTH! I call Marvin company because I had a leak on my roof so I made an appointment for him to check it out the next day. He came over on time and I showed him where the leak was inside the house. Then he went up on the roof took some pics came down and showed me what was the problem on the roof. He suggested to replace only half of the roof he gave me a quote and in a couple of days his crew show up to do the job. They replace rotten wood then started to replace the roof with all its component. What I'd like is that they took pictures from all the process and they were sent to my cell phone. I live in NW DC and consider myself fairly knowledgeable with respect to basic construction and comparing bids for work in the area. After getting 2 or 3 outrageous bids for a 450 sq ft flat roof in July, I realized the better time to do the work would be in the fall. In the fall, I contracted 3 roofers with more reasonable but still a wide variation of bids. One of them MG was the most reasonable. Marvin, the business owner is a roofer first and a salesman second. He was very frank as to what I needed but gave me the options I asked for. This is a reference for Marvin Garcilazo (MG Roofing) We have used Marvin now for four separate jobs. The first one, and by far the largest job he did, was to repair/rebuild the 60 foot Yankee box gutter on our house in DC. The second was to repair an EPDM roof on our daughter's house in Silver Spring that was leaking. The third was to replace the gutters and replace and paint the rotten soffit and fascia boards on our other daughter's 3-story house in Mount Rainier. The last job was to install a new skylight in a rental house we own in DC. Marvin is not necessarily going to be the low bidder on a job, although his prices are reasonable. He does beautiful work though, and he is responsive and reliable. He responds promptly to inquiries, shows up when he says he will, and works quickly. Our box gutter had been leaking off and on for probably 20 years, and we had been nursing it along with various patches and coatings because the first price we got for it, before our kids went to college in the 90s, was $26000. Marvin's price was about $18000 (plus the cost of the scaffold and any needed carpentry) all these years later. The job required him to remove two rows of slate from our mansard roof, take the old metal lining off the gutter, repair a fair amount of rotten wood, rebuild the gutter, put a new metal lining on it, and reinstall the slate. He sent us pictures at every step of the way, and did the whole job in about a week. The other work he has done for us has been equally well done. We would use Marvin again the next time we have a roofing issue. We recommend you do too. read more

I highly recommend this company. They repaired a spanish tile roof on our 1920's house in NW DC. We had a leak; I called them and Marvin came the next morning to take a look and give an estimate. When he arrived at the door he showed his license with photo and his insurance documentation, without me asking. (He also emailed copies of these when he sent his estimate.) When he visited he took several photos and explained everything to me in detail. He sent an estimate a day later, and they started the work three days after that (which was a date I suggested and he agreed to.) Throughout the project Marvin sent many photos showing the progress of the work. The crew was courteous, hard working and neat, and I got the sense that at least some of the group had worked for Marvin for a long time. I feel completely confident in the quality of the work they did; their 20-year guarantee is always nice to have regardless. The work was done ahead of schedule (he predicted two days but it took just one day), and it also cost less than we expected. (Marvin had given us a clear estimate of a fixed amount plus a variable amount depending what they uncovered, all explained in detail.
