I have found a way to eat here. They always put way too much cheese on the dishes so I just ask for no cheese or easy cheese. Then it's perfect. ****DISCRIMATION**** I first would like to start off with Mi Casa was my favorite mexican food spot to eat. They have great food and I always would order from there via doordash. NOW.... (here we go) Last night my 70 year old father drove over an hour to come visit me at my home in Newport Beach and watch the basketball games. After the Lakers won we decided to go grab some tasty mexican food and drinks. I knew the best place for this MI CASA. We drove to the location. We arrived at 8:30pm to which people were outside eating and enjoying their night. We walked up to the front door (with mask on) and asked how can we get seated. Numerous employees advised to head inside and ask the person at the front counter. Before we can get from the front door to the counter a tall caucasian gentleman by the name of Ryan voiced to us, "we are sorry we cannot seat you because it's 8:30pm" (business closing hours are 9pm) I did not argue and asked if they will be able to take to go orders to which Ryan advised yes you may. We began to place our order. After doing so a white male came into the building to which we overheard Ryan ask, "you're looking for a table"? The man answers yes to which Ryan says follow me and proceeds to get the man seated. My temper went from 0 to 100 instantly but still calmly waited for Ryan to return for questioning. Upon Ryan's return I asked him why was that man able to sit down and order food etc but we were turned away? Ryan began to stutter while answering the question saying that person was on the list and we seated him because of that. Mind you Ryan was nowhere near the list when the man walked in. He simply seated the man. I asked Ryan ok what is the man's name? Ryan tried to walk towards the list but I stepped on front of the list as asked for the mans 1st name. Ryan had no idea the mans name because again RYAN NEVER CHECKED THE LIST. The workers there looked with their heads down in disbelief and disgust as they knew what Ryan did was wrong and uncalled for. We immediately asked for a refund which we received and went to Playa Mesa to eat and have a great time with my father. I WILL NOT EAT AT MI CASA EVER AGAIN. The discrimination that I've received was a first for me since living in Newport Beach Ca and it came from the hands of my favorite Mexican food spot I've given hundreds of dollars to. Every neighborhood has one, a local Mexican restaurant that has been around a long time. A place you don't mind waiting twenty minutes for a table on a Friday evening because you know you're going to have a great meal. Whenever we visit our friends in Costa Mesa we meet here to eat. Mi Casa has been around since 1972. The place has a warm cozy feel to it. Even though the decor seems dated, it's simple yet elegant. The menu offers a range of options from tacos, burritos and enchiladas to carne asada fries. The chips and salsa came to the table first and they are fantastic. I munched on them throughout my meal. My wife and I went for the two item combination plate ($12.95). We each had a shredded beef taco and a chili relleno with refried beans and rice. When our food arrived I took one look at the plate and could not decide where to start. The taco has so much inside the ingredients spills out with each bite. There is no shortage of cheese here, tons of it on the taco and beans. My daughter enjoyed her order of chicken flautas ($12.95) served with black beans and a spicy corn salad. Although I don't work in the Newport Beach/Costa Mesa area anymore, anytime I find myself in the neighborhood I try to stop by my old stomping grounds. MiCasa is a longtime heavy hitter in the area, and is famous for it's delicious food and generous portions. As my pictures can attest, they don't skimp on the food- especially the guacamole and sour cream. My husband ordered the fiesta salad, with chicken, black beans, corn, purple onions, tomatoes, etc. He chose the lime-cilantro vinaigrette and really liked it. I had the beef taquitos, that were huge! I have never had such a stuffed piece of meaty deliciousness. The guacamole and sour cream were an added bonus. They were served with rice and beans which were far above average. My husband couldn't stop filching off of my plate, using the light and crispy chips to scoop up the rice and beans. I used to go to Mi Casa regularly years ago. The last 5 or so years not so much. The food quality, flavor is not what it used to be, it looks very similar and the quantity has always been large but the flavor is just not there. I stopped in today, it's probably been a year since I was last there. Every item I ordered, shredded beef taco, shredded beef enchilada, chicken tostada, and guacamole was so bland, I even added salt to give it something, anything. The place is maybe at half capacity, not deadbeat slow, but by no means busy. -waitress took decades to take our order, much less comprehend it. -food came out at various temperatures and at a snails pace. Each entree was 5-10 minutes apart on the arrival. By the time everyone had their main course, most of the food was cold. -when asked about ordering (suggestions or favorites) two employees said I don't know with a shrug and one admitted they haven't tried much. I like the honesty I guess, but to keep the facade for the customer, maybe ACT like you're not grossed out by your own food? -asked a manager for hot sauce, he didn't acknowledge or say anything, just walked into the kitchen and walked back out to place the bottle of hot sauce on a different table. The family sitting at that table looked confused, having yet to order anything. Throughout all that he said zero words to us (the requesting table) nor them (the unwitting table that received the unrequested hot sauce). Did I mention this guy was the manager? Mi Casa will always be a family favorite that I've been going to since I was born! They've made some updates in the last couple of years including sprucing the place up and some of the menu items. There are healthier options now but for the old timers there are still all the old favorites! The tacos are gigantic, unless they're the taco Tuesday street tacos. Beware, the chips and salsa will fill you up if you don't pace yourself! There are very few menu items that you can go wrong with. If you've never been try a combo plate to try a few things. Found my way here on a date and left wondering if this guy had ever had good Mexican food before. The restaurant is a solid meh. There's nothing unique or special about this strip mall location in any way. The restaurant itself is small and dated with tiny bathrooms. The drinks were weak enough that I had to ask for a shot on the side to pour into our margaritas and the food looked greasy and unappetizing. We ordered a variety of tacos, none of which tasted especially memorable. I asked them for extra chillis and sauce and cheese just to get some flavor in there. Service wise, we felt ignored. I love Mi Casa! It's hard to top the history and quality that they have to offer. I've been frequenting here for the past 20+ years. Their classic style of American Mexican is great. My favorite is the crispy chicken taco and cheese enchilada combo (w/ refried beans covered in cheese). Tips: Ask to sit in the George W. Bush booth and get an Ultimate Cadillac Margarita. Lastly, the menu has recently been updated to include shrimp and maui-mahi tacos. Both of these are a well prepared and not as heavy as the famous crispy tacos. I've been coming to Mi Casa since I was -0.9 months old. Basically this food is in my blood and unless something drastic happens, I will be returning whenever I get the itch. Originally in an old Sizzler restaurant, you can still find the old tables, booths and even water pitchers still in use. First off, you can never complain with unlimited tortilla chips that are made on-site. The best part is, once you run out, you are instantly refilled. A rumor I've heard is that they are fried in lard, but I can't confirm that. Additionally, the table salsa is so delicious that it makes my mouth water thinking about it. Yeah, it's not too spicy and a lot of people think it's not very chunky, but all in all I can down it like a kid's sports drink. The Cadillac Margarita is my usual go to beverage here, but they have a large selection of choices for both margaritas and beers by the bottle or tap. You can order at the table or enjoy both cocktails and your dinner at the Burro Room (the bar). In fact you can take advantage of their self service chips and salsa (which is also unlimited). There they have all their salsas up for grabs. (Tropical, Mild, Spicy, and Verde). The menu here is pretty lavish. A lot of choices to make at this Sonoran style restaurant. One warning, on a majority of the items, expect to get an over load of cheese on your (very hot) plate. Some of my usual standby dining choices are; enchilada combo plate - A large cheese (meat is available too) enchilada with mounds of melted cheese and red sauce, with rice and beans (with more cheese on top). The stuffed quesadilla is a huge flour tortilla filled with pounds of cheese and olives, peppers, tomatoes, onions and lettuce. Sals shrimp burrito is another delectable item filled with plenty of shrimp, beans, rice and cheese. Some items that I've seen ordered, but never have had the gumption to get were the; Mexican pizza, Flautas, Tostada and Chili Colorado - these are just too enormous for me to eat without feeling guilty. However, anything you order here will be well priced for the portion you receive. The waitresses here are fantastic, with some having been here since before I was born. They are always on the move and bring your meal out within minutes. For an Americanized Mexican food place, Mi Casa is the place for your fix. read more

This is the place to be if you *love* cheese. Pretty much everything comes with at least a handful. Their portions are enormous, so you can easily have enough for a meal later. I had the chicken tortilla soup. It arrived with a healthy chunk of avocado alongside a dollop of sour cream. Beneath swirled an embrace of melted goodness. It was pure comfort food - something I would crave for on a soggy San Francisco Day (like today!). Next arrived my a la carte fish taco. It wasn't quite what I expected. It sat next to an avalanche of shredded lettuce and grated cheese. The fish was encased in a thick batter. A bit greasy for my buds. Next time I'd opt to order a chicken taco. We returned to Mi Casa last week, after about 10 months' absence. What a wonderful evening! We sat outdoors in a wonderful, well spaced and immaculately clean new patio area. Between the twinkle lights and the moonlight and the empty space all around us - well, major romance night. Food was as great as we remembered, service was excellent (Thursday night 7ish) and Covid protections were right on. Despite my previous 3 star review, I keep coming back and always catch myself wanting to go here when craving a sit down Mexican restaurant, sure seems like I liked this place more than I realized! Have been here countless more times and have always enjoyed my experience, from the servers to the food. My go to dish is their Relleno Puebla (super delicious Pasilla chile) that I have never seen an option for at any other Mexican joint. Recently I ordered that with a carne asada enchilada which was tender and moist this time around. Definitely ginormous portions, and I normally order a one item combo but was taking the other half of the meal home to the hubby. Also, I always ask for easy cheese, cause they put more cheese on their dishes than any other place. I like that you have options for sides (rice, black or refried pinto beans, salad, veggies) though I usually stick to the basic rice and refried beans for indulgence purposes. I recently experienced their bar area in the back of the restaurant that is not visible when you first walk in, you wouldn't think to go back there unless you knew you could. There's also a back entrance to it that only the regulars know about. Or now, thanks to yelp. There they have a salsa bar with an array of salsas down to a creatively sweet pineapple/mango one or something of that sorts and all you can eat chips. Definitely a place to go if you just want to hang out and not be rushed through a meal. All in all, really grateful to be able to consistently go to a place that I have been to since a little girl, and from other reviews you can see a theme of it being a memorable place for many as youngsters. How can you give a Mexican joint that serves you 10 lbs. of cheese on your tacos anything less than 5 stars? I've been coming here for about 20 years now. The only thing that's changed is that you see the Moore family less, after countless years of working all of those nights. I always order the standard #7, two tacos beef no lettuce. If you're don't feel like you get enough cheese on your meal, I dare you to order the chips and cheese (not to be confused with the nachos!!) Amazing service. Shasta kept the drinks coming and the hospitality to full notch. We will be returning to enjoy the happy hour, taco Tuesday specials and Sunday fundays. We were looking for a place for dinner and ran into this hidden gem. Passed by it several time and finally made a pit stop. So glad we did! Hubby ordered the chicken/steak fajitas. And wife ordered the Diablo Del Mar. Both plates kept us fully satisfied. Could have taken a plate to go but they were too good. Ate the whole thing. I used Door Dash once or twice a week with Mi Casa fir last couple years, I called today to place an order for pick up, when I asked the girl taking my order to please have my container of salad dressing to the dine and NOT INSIDE with my salad she actually spoke to me with a very poor attitude, "They ALWAYS put the dressing to the side" I just arrived home with my order and the container of salad dressing WAS INSIDE with my salad so the means someone's hands were directly touching the salad, I will not eat the the and I WILL NEVER ORDER or Go to Mi Casa again. I'm considering reporting to the proper authorities as this is disgusting! And her attitude!!! STAY AWAY FROM MI CASA on 17th Street in Costa Mesa!!!! I was paying a visit to uncle Carl and Aunt Alm in Costa Mesa. They took me to this lovely place. The portions are Huge and the food was so yummy! I highly recommend anyone with a big appetite to pay a visit! There was a lovely young lady there as a waitress that gave us great service. Patrons here have known the place for years, and if you are a Costa Mesa resident, you know that this is a hit or miss with everything - from food to drinks to atmosphere. Its just baffling to me..why do we still keep coming back?? I LOVE delicious Mexican food, and authenticity is important with certain dishes and drinks. Mi Casa lacks in authenticity, flavor and presentation. I mean, how much beans and cheese is absolutely necessary on a plate? Also, it seems that the actual food portion of your taco, burrito or entree has been minimized and compensated with more cheese.. oh well who doesn't love melted, gloppy cheese?? Yep.. It is what it is.. Staff is average. As many times as the hubbster and I have been here, never we were treated beyond the happiness level. Every server we have encountered here is either content with their life or just hates it. I always manage to see a smile or have a laugh, but its short lived. The staff here seems to be going along with no enthusiasm, and I feel that it may reflect on some patrons, but its not totally disappointing. I always order the 2 item Famous Combo plate of 1 taco and 1 enchilada. Food is lacking in flavor, but it is very filling for the $$. Chips and salsa are tasty, and there is a full and hefty water jug for your own personal quenching. Perks: Dining area is roomy, there is a big bar area in the back. Taco Tuesdays, Happy Hour deals, and Sunday Brunch with $5 Blood Mary's - Yes that is a huge perk! Downsides: Busy place. Especially on weekends and weekend nights. Also like I mentioned about staff, some servers are either all together, or not at all. Meaning, they can come by once, and then never again till you call for the check. Mi Casa is a neighborhood delight! We have lived in Costa Mesa for 7 years, and one of the best things about the area is having this restaurant nearby! There's something for everyone. The bar is fantastic and full of friendly locals. We made reservations a week in advance with a male that had answered the phone for 9 people for my birthday dinner. When we booked it, the guy even repeated all our info back to us to confirm he had it right. The day of the reservation around 1pm, I called to add one more to the reservation. The girl that answered the phone sounded very unsure of herself and then proceeded to tell me that they "lost our reservation and sold our table to someone else".
