this place is right down the street off Manchaca and what a find. Busy with tons of people and they serve breakfast tacos all the time. My friends and I had the brisket tacos with cilantro...a little greasy but tasty. The chips and queso. Queso was a little creamy and bland but the salsas to choose from you can add accordingly to your spice desire. I got the breakfast tacos egg and potato and topped them with pico de gallo. Came in and asked for the crispy tacos with black beans inside of the shell instead of meat and made it known that I wanted the tacos exactly how the picture came with the exception of changing out the black beans for the meat. When I got my food the side was also black beans and I didn't notice this until I was already in my car so I came back inside with my food and I asked for them to do it correctly and put the regular beans on the picture as a side. The lady behind the counter came around and started shouting at me in a very aggressive manner literally yelling at me about the confusion and blamed the issue on me saying that I told her something wrong when I didn't. What it isn't: It's not fancy. It's clean and well kept, but just plain and ordinary decor. What it is: The tamale's seem to be their claim to fame, so I did order them oh about on 4 different occasions :) They sell them by the dozen guys, and I had out of towners visiting. That said, I tried their burrito the other day and WOW. Ok, have you had a burrito at a Taqueria in California? You know what I'm talking about, those burrito's that are the size of a small baby and perfect in every bite. I thought I'd never have one again until now. So we went to try it....WEEEELLLLL since we went at dinner and did not sample said breakfast tacos I can't say if they hold up to the accolades. But we did try the tamales and and ckn fajita plate. Tamales were ok but not great. The chicken fajita plate wasn't strips or shredded chicken, it was more like the chicken used in chinese food, (the amorphous chunks and pieces) and not the most flavorful. Wonderful food, nice, polite and humble owners and staff. They genuinely care about their customers. Such a joy to go in there and relax. No snark, eyerolls, attitude, expected tip or dirty looks. This place is the real deal. It's a true standout amongst three other similar spots all within a mile range of each other. Our favorites are the beef fajita tacos, chorizo with cactus, and the freshly made empanadas that melt in your mouth.. (I'm salivating just thinking of it)! I actually feel cheated realizing I have never tasted a truly amazing empanada until this place - even ordered homemade ones from a co-worker before. Someone else here compared them to HEB (as a compliment??)... Wow that is extremely insulting IMO!!! My daughter asks for the beef tacos on a regular basis when we're short on time in the evenings. This is by far the most authentic Mexican food I have ever had in all of Austin! Some might say it's Tex-Mex but this is the real stuff. Their beef enchiladas have chunks of potatoes in it so it's very central Mexico. The chicken enchiladas are delicious and I adore their quesadillas! If you want the best breakfast taco you could imagine, barbacoa is the way to go with some avocado on it! Their salsa's are also all amazing from pico de gallo to the avocado jalapeño cream sauce! Mmm... I might have to go in the near future. Other than the food, the prices are fantastic! Cheaper than Texican or Chuy's and so much better! They also began as a trailer and saved enough money to buy the old Texaco station. They have slowly but surely been making upgrades. They don't spend all of the money at once and try to pay it back so it doesn't seem like they will be going anywhere very soon! And thank goodness for that because we need a real Mexican restaurant in south Austin! read more

We are regulars and took our high-school aged nephews and four of their friends here one night and they had to take home several to-go containers because the portions are big. I've passed by this place several times on my way to south Austin. Usually I've been in too big a hurry to stop. I was in a hurry again today, but not so much I couldn't stop to get an order to go. I was not very impressed with the interior, but then I wasn't going to stay long anyway. As per my usual habit when visiting a Mexican restaurant for the first time, I ordered one of my tacos to be chicharrones. See my review of other restaurants to compare, but this place gets it right. On average, the prices are about the same as other places (as far as breakfast tacos anyway). But these came packed to the rim, so much so that the food was falling out of the taco. For that reason alone it gets an above average rating, but the food was tasty too. Also got a pastor taco. I just recently within the past couple of years tried pastor (which is pork for those who don't know), and although I am not the connoisseur of it that I am with chicharrones, I know what I like. This was a bit on the spicy side from other places, but very nice. The guy at the counter was my only experience with service, so I'm not sure if it's entirely order at the counter and get it when your number is called, or if they actually have a wait staff. Didn't appear to on this occasion. Personally, I prefer a waitress (or waiter) if I'm dining in. Other than that, it is a good place for authentic Mexican cuisine. read more

I LOVE family owned, hole in the wall places, and not because it's the hipster thing to do. I just love how homey and unpretentious they are, and this place is no exception. Located right at the end in Manchaca Road, it's a quick drive from home base. I've driven by it more times than I can count, and finally came to my senses and stopped in. Comfortable, happy hole-in-the-wall. Typical low budget table and chairs, the menu is up on giant yellow boards or on laminated sheets hanging from the ceiling, the wall to wall fridge in the back IS the back wall. The Awesomeness: *Salsa bar: beats Polvo's by a landslide. They have 6-7 salsas to choose from, each more delicious than the next. Full up the single service cups, or buy a pint to take home! That habanero one is bomb. *Food is fresh and fast. The carne guisada and barbacoa are amazing. *Staff is so friendly *individual tacos (onion and cilantro are the only toppings) and just over $2. Score. The not so awesome: *The queso is pretty blah. A bit like Velveeta city. *Chips are forgettable. Tasted like anything I could get from a grocery store and slightly stale. Same both times I have been there. Not that this will keep me from stuffing my face with them. *Stay away from the fajita chicken! I ordered chicken tacos and I wasn't sure what I was even eating. Really chopped up, a little tough and kind of grey (?). And bland on top of that. Just weird. Overall, a few lackluster items won't keep me away! This place makes me happy. read more

I use Mi Ranchito as a treat and try to limit myself to a once-a-week visit, but sometimes twice a week is in order. This is my favorite taqueria! I was an Arandas fan, and still do enjoy their tacos, but Mi Ranchito surpasses them. If you have never been here you have to try the pork carnitas and suadero tacos. Seriously, how can you beat slow roasted pork, fresh onions, cilantro, and avocado slices on two tortillas for $1.75? They also have a self-serve salsa bar with seven different types of salsa, plus fresh limes and pickled onions and carrots. Everything on their breakfast menu is great. Just be sure to order eggs over medium if you get a huevos rancheros plate as they tend to be on the runny side. I would give it five stars, but the runny eggs ruined an otherwise perfect breakfast plate for me one time. Also I tried their tamales once, and although they were okay, I was expecting better. Mi Ranchito is definitely worth a morning taco run the next time you're on the south side. read more

With that said, Mi Ranchito Taqueria definitely met the mark! I had some simple tacos with barbacoa and my boyfriend had quesadillas. In the quest for good breakfast tacos, our last stop was Mi Ranchito Taqueria. I had read they had some great breakfast tacos, they made their own tortillas, AND they had a salsa bar...we were sold! Mi Ranchito is not that close to downtown Austin, so you will definitely need a car to get out to this place. From the outside, it doesn't look like anything special, though they do have a large sign promoting their homemade tamales. The interior looks more like a take-out/fast food place but we weren't there for the ambiance, we were there for tacos! The salsa bar was pretty impressive with 6 options for salsa along with pickled vegetables, lime, and radish. We wanted to try them all! One thing we noticed during our time in Austin was a real love for avocado sauce (salsa?). This stuff was like crack, while no two tasted the same we really fell in love with this and wished more places had this as a salsa option. All of the salsas were good but our favorites were definitely the two avocado salsas with a mild and spicier version. We both liked the spicier version more (obviously). The roasted tomato salsa was really good and we liked the smokey flavor of the salsa. The spiciest salsa had a consistency almost of raw egg, it was strange to say the least but it did pack a punch. I opted for an egg and chorizo taco ($1.50) that came with a healthy serving of eggs and some crispy bits of chorizo. The tortilla was actually the star of this taco. I think I preferred the creamier consistency of the eggs at Tacodeli. However, with a splash of the salsas, I really enjoyed this taco. Adam was ready for lunch; thus, he opted for a barbacoa and carnitas taco ($1.75 each). The barbacoa and carnitas were quite good, though we preferred the barbacoa at El Taco Rico. The meats were well seasoned, came on a perfectly soft tortilla, and some simple accompaniments of cilantro, onion and avocado. A dash (drenching) of salsa and Adam was a happy camper. I had a bite and found the tacos quite good. I don't know why, maybe going delirious from all the food at this point?, I also ordered the pork with green sauce ($8). It came with a choice of beans (black or refried) and I went with the black. The pork was slightly fattier than I would have preferred but the green sauce was different from others that I have had in the past due to the heavy use of lime. I quite enjoyed the sauce and since there were only a few pieces of (fatty) pork, we used the sauce on the tortillas, rice, beans, pretty much anything that was left. We enjoyed the food at Mi Ranchito Taqueria and found the service very friendly. The real draw for us was the homemade tortillas and salsa bar, which were both quite good. We were too stuffed, but we would love to come back and try their tamales the next time we're in Austin. read more

Top these overstuffed babies off with one of the salsas from the salsa bar and you are good to go! I ordered several different tacos, and I can't complain about a single one. I LOVED their salsa, which is also for sale. My husband got a bacon, egg and cheese breakfast taco and a chorizo breakfast taco and said they were both very good. The pork tamales are soooo good. This place has AMPLE choices on three walls to choose your meal. The girls at the front are EXCELLENT! I always feel super awkward going into places where English is not the first language spoken. But these girls made me feel at home in this cute taqueria. I've eaten the Menudo and tamales here. I've never had menudo before so I can't compare it to any other place. But the portion of this soup was HUGE and very delicious. I took a shot based on what I read here on Yelp. Well I was not disappointed. I tried the Huevos Rancheros with Carne Guisda. The Guisada was fork tender and flavorfull. The gravy was brown with a hint of red like it should be not like some of the red fake Carne Guisada you can get in this town. The service was friendly. This place is very popular with the regulars that stop here and I see why. The options on the menu here are endless (that being Mexican food) and that one occasionally cheese burger option which is found in most Mexican restaurants. Out of everything I opted out with the burrito. This burrito was a pretty hardy one at that, stuffed with beans, rice, sour cream, cheese, lettuce (shredded), your choice of meat (I did beef fajitas), and avocado (optional). I also tried their famous homemade tamales. The chicken tamales were very good to my surprise. I did tried the pork tamales as well but I rather go with chicken in my option.
