I came here for breakfast on a weekday morning and was left very happy. I ordered the Huevos Mexicanos which are two eggs (to order) topped with molcajete sauce and served with beans and potatoes. I also asked for a side of their red and green salsas. The potatoes and beans were pretty standard for a little Mexican place. The eggs (over easy) were perfect. But the real star, in my opinion, were the salsas. All three were delicious and had a great spice level. The service was great too. My server was friendly and regularly checked to see if I needed more coffee or anything else. I look forward to visiting La Vallarta again to try some lunch and dinner options. read more

We are always search for a hole in the wall and cheap Mexican restaurant with good breakfast food. We ran across this one online and figured we'd give it a shot. To our surprise when we opened the menu the prices were not expensive per say, but more like $6.95 or $7.95 for a brief aghast plate. It just wasn't our typical hole in the wall "$3.95 breakfast plate before 11am and $4.95 after 11am" that we get at other mexican restaurants. We got the breakfast plate, a kids enchilada meal, a coffee, and a horchata. The amount of food on the plate was not a lot. I mean, it was enough to feed a person, but I guess I am spoiled with the cheaper $3.95 breakfast plate that typically comes with a lot of food at other hole in the walls. I was impressed with the beef enchilada kids plate that came with rice and been. It had a lot of flavor. And the horchata was the best I've had at all the mexican restaurants - very sweet. Came here by accident but had menudo on the brain, luckily they had it. Happened to be in the area and Yelped for Menudo. I chose El Torito which must be close but ended up here. The prices seemed a bit high: $7 for small, $10 for large. These were not your typical jumbo fish bowl sizes either. I ordered the large and it quickly arrived with hot tortillas, onion, cilantro, chilies and lime. Chips and salsa were served prior. The menudo was loaded with tripe, I like! Went in looking for a cure to my hangover. Had the Huevos el Camposino. Eggs, a strip of bacon, refried beans, a nice pile of Barbacoa, a premade hashbrown square and some tortillas. It worked wonders. Put me in a nice food coma in which I napped through the afternoon. A couple things threw me off. The inside felt more like an Italian restaurant while I watched ESPN en Español. The hostess was a 12 year old girl during the middle of a school day, which I'm sure there are laws against. But hey, if the two bike cops feasting there didn't mind, who am I to care? Been here a few times. Sometimes their food has a funky taste or after taste to it. Previously I've had their ground beef nachos and I kept persisting to my boyfriend that the meat had a strange after taste. He's been coming here since back in the day so he asked that I try to like it. I went to the restroom and on My way out, at the same time a cook was walking into the kitchen. There was a LOAD of crumbs, food, trash, and compost waste on the floor and he just stepped right in looking back to see if I had saw. We paid and left. I never, ever planned to go back. Ive been sick for a couple days. I asked my boyfriend to order me some caldo de res "from the restaurant down the street." For some reason in his mind, he thought I meant this place. After he ordered it and got it, I told him I wasn't sure if I wanted to eat from Vallarta. I've been throwing up the past two days and considering Vallarta's history with me, I was worried I'd taste something funky and throw up.... Well guess what happened? Exactly that. The caldo consisted of one LARGE bone-in hunk of chewy meat (not fall apart, melt in your mouth meat). One large potato that tasted like freezer burn, one corn, and one carrot. The flour tortillas were the store bought. I tried to eat it to be nice to my boyfriend for getting it for me but a health inspector or even Gordon Ramsay needs to come here quick and clean this place up. read more

I have eaten at this restaurant at least once a week for the last four years. It has been my go to Mexican restaurant in South Austin. I'm sad to say that today's visit was a disgrace. I'm not sure if it's because of new management, a new cook, or racism. The tacos that I've ordered for years were switched from yellow corn to white corn. No side of charro beans no cilantro, grilled onion, or jalapeño. No side of rice I ordered. Instead just meat, lettuce, and tomato on the tacos. I felt as if they decided I wasn't worthy of the normal tacos I've eaten for years. To top it off my bill was double what it was just last week. We were hungry, the Total Woman and I, and we were en route to an evening gathering in South Austin that would keep us captive for hours. We had to eat. We passed by Taqueria Vallarta. For no other reasons than the convenient location and our fondness for the word "Vallarta" (see our photos of Puerto Vallarta and you'll understand), we entered. Like most strip center taquerias, Vallarta is a simple place. It's not large, it's not fancy, it's not stylish. But it was pretty busy for early Saturday evening. Oh, and we were the only Gringos in the building, which I usually take as a promising sign. Service was prompt. We ordered the mushroom quesadilla ($4.99) and a chicken burrito ($3.69). Iced tea to drink. As we waited for our food, we noticed this was a place for regulars. Families, couples, a group of young men who looked like they just wrapped up another Saturday of work and were taking on fuel for their Saturday night. One nicely dressed older couple seemed to be on a date, a reminder that for many in Austin, those swank "date restaurants" we all take for granted may as well be in another country. Before too long the food arrived. It was very good. The mushroom quesadillas were particularly excellent. Pressed for time, we ate half of each and requested a doggy bag for the rest. It was only then that the service component seemed to unravel a bit., most likely because the place had completely filled up since we'd arrived and orders were flying. We ended up waiting many minutes for the check and the to-go containers. When the check (without the to-go box) finally arrived, we simply went to the counter to pay and wrap up the food ourselves. It worked out fine, and I don't begrudge the wait staff for this hiccup. We'd definitely recommend this place to others looking for an inexpensive and tasty injection of Tex-Mex. I'm giving this little gem a 4 not because it's the best spanish cuisine ever but because it never fails. On a daily basis I need to fill a void in my life with mexican food. Cheese, rice, tortillas...basically anything including carbs. This place fills that void and cheaply too. The ball and chain and I are regulars at this joint. There are always a variety of different people that eat there. It can get very busy but the ladies that wait the tables are very quick and efficient. I always order the Gorditas wtih beef fajita and he orders enchiladas. The only thing missing from this place is margaritas. Luckilly for me they are opening a new restaurant right across the street from where they now stand. The sign now reads, " Taqueria Vallarta Mexican Food and Bar". Horray!! I stopped here to grab some breakfast tacos to feed my hired muscle (read: the bf) who was helping me move. The location definitely looks a little shady, so I was hoping for an quick stop. I ordered 3 potato, egg & cheese tacos, and 3 bacon, egg & cheese tacos and also a coffee. All to-go. The woman ringing me up seemed to have difficulty adding up my order, so she helped another customer, and then asked someone else to ring me up. Well after I paid for it, I stood around awkwardly for a few minutes before deciding to sit on a bench next to the door. 5 minutes later, someone yells out "6 tacos!" and since no one else is making a move to get them, I assume they must be my order. The tacos were f*cking good, but the service was not 5 stars. I'm pretty sure they were talking about me in Spanish while I was standing there. The place is a little grim and not the cleanest looking, and they also have leaks from the ceiling. Maybe from the air conditioner? The salsas and chips they provide are pretty good. One is spicy and the other is more of a tomato based, chunky salsa. I ordered the Vegetarian Fajitas with corn tortillas and everything came out piping hot. The fajitas had green peppers, onions, cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, and mushrooms. A lot more than I expected! It was good, but not great. I would have preferred less grease and more spice or seasoning. The Guac was just mediocre. If they changed the place up a bit and added more pizazz to the veggie fajitas, I might go back. read more

Yummy! I love Taqueria Vallarta! Now, I will preface the rest of my reveiw by saying this place is not the best Mexican food I've ever had, but it is good... AND: $3 for 3 tacos is AWESOME! I'm talking a man's man's tacos. I can put away some food, but after a cup of coffee and some chips and salsa, I can eat 2 at the most. I think personally my draw to this restaurant is the empty booth in the corner that always is there for me on Sunday mornings. It's been waiting since the first time I've been there and it faithfully waits for me to come back. The waitstaff is amazing, they are brave enough to wander from their section and ensure everything is alright for everyone in the taqueria. Every time I have been in there, I've been waited on by several different people. .. As long as we're being honest, I've been waited on by several attractive female people! I have been here a few times for lunch and dinner and the food is always on point, but the highlight to me is the large portions of delicious breakfast food serve hot and cheap! Two words is all you need to know when you order here. Carne guisada! Tender + Juicy= Flavorful! Generous helpings oozed all over my plate along with my 1 cheesy enchilada. Don't think I've ever eaten a more cheesy enchilada in my life. It was almost even a little too much for me and I am quite the cheese connoisseur. We have been eating here regularly for about a year and a half now. A little while back, they had a sign that read, "Under new management." Since then we have watched things change little by little. We work very late on weekend nights and an eight hour sleep for us means that we don't get up until around noon. So breakfast for us on weekends happens usually around 1:00 to 1:30 pm. This was one of our favorite breakfast spots, until today. Today, a Sunday, we went in, noticed new menus, and also noticed how empty the place was during the same time frame we always arrive here and it is usually very busy. The prices were a bit high and the portions a bit small before, compared to other hole in the wall Mexican restaurants in the area, but the food has been very tasty, the service very fast and their breakfasts are some of our favorites. On the new menu, the prices have all jumped by $1.00 or more. We were willing to make an exception for the high prices before, but these new prices are just a bit on the ridiculous side and we're just not willing to pay such an exorbitant amount of money for such a small amount of food. They also have stopped serving breakfast after noon. So, if like us you work late on a Friday or Saturday night, are unable to be awake, out the door, and seated at a restaurant before noon on a Saturday or Sunday, and you're wanting breakfast, then don't bother going to La Vallarta. Since we were already there and munching on chips and salsa and drinking our beverages when we found out that we could not get breakfast, which it says nothing on the menu about breakfast not being served past noon, we decided to go ahead and order lunch. Not only did we have to pay more for food that was not our first choice, but our favorite tacos that we usually get when we come in for lunch or dinner, the beef fajita tacos, had tough, chewy beef, and were just not as good as they used to be. Very disappointing. In a neighborhood full of family run and small local chain Mexican restaurants, there are so many more menu choices, bigger portions, better quality, a much better value for your hard earned money, and you can get breakfast on a weekend up until 3:00 at so many other places nearby, a couple serve it all day, that Vallarta just isn't worth the trip there. There are actually two separate Vallarta restaurants on both sides of South Congress Avenue. West location is old one, and East is relatively new. Been to both and it is one of my favorite places in Austin. Amazing food (all types of tacos, enchiladas, and fajitas), but shimp a-la-mexicana is my favorite. I've wanted to update my review on these guys for some time....but for whatever reason I put it off. I don't know what they did or why they did it but the cheese they put on tacos has changed. Its gross. It seems fake if that makes any sense. I feel like I'm eating little pieces of rubber on my taco. Maybe they had to cut costs and aren't buying the old stuff anymore. I don't know but its changed and I'm out. Cheese is a must on breakfast tacos! The last time I was there I met my family for breakfast before I had to go into work. We had plenty of time to order and eat before having to leave, but that didn't happen. Our waitress served the table next to us before serving us, and they came in a good 10 minutes after us. I had to ask for mine and my daughters food to go because we had to leave by the time it came out. Taqueria Vallarta is truly an authentic Mexican Restaurant. The salsa is perfectly spicy yet subtle. The service is great, and the owner is extremely involved in the restaurant. The many times that I have been here, he has come up to my table to make sure the service was up to par. Great beer specials along with Happy Hour. The only down side is that there is no Margaritas due to the fact that they do not carry liquor. I was a little disappointed to hear that a "Mexican" Restaurant did not serve Margaritas. Besides that, the prices are dead on for the portions and tastes delicious. Honestly, why go to Jaliscos when there's a great, authentic Mexican restaurant across the street. Eat here. read more

Our friendly neighborhood taqueria. Whenever I'm in the mood for a breakfast taco fast, this is where we go. The tortilla soup is also a must whenever I'm under the weather or suffering from cedar fever. When I'm low carbing, I order the grilled chicken with avocado and cheese, charra beans on the side. If you love pork, like I do, then you'll love the tacos al pastor plate. Usually, I'm a big fan of small hole-in-the-wall restaurants, but. personally. I just never connected with this restaurant my first time there. Originally, a friend & I wanted to eat across the street at Jalisco's Restaurant, but it was a Friday night and the wait there was longer than we wanted, so we decided just to jump across the street and try Taqueria Vallarta instead. As someone who lived in San Antonio for over 8 years, I know and can appreciate good Mexican cuisine. And the food here was alright: It wasn't of bad quality, and the portions were decent. However, overall, the restaurent was a little too nondescript for me. Nothing about this place in particular just grabbed my attention or made me want to go back again. But that's just my opinion. A lot of people must feel differently about this place b/c nearly all the seats were full, people were coming inside for phoned-in to-go orders, and I didn't overhear anyone complaining about their food or the service (which was very friendly). I could also tell most of the patrons were probably frequent, too (which is always a good sign to me about consistent quality). The prices also didn't impress me, either. Based on the astetic quality of the restaurant & food (compared w/the menu they offer), I expected prices to be a lot lower. So, I guess I would eat at this place again, but it wouldn't be my primary destination. I really love their Migas a la Mexicana for breakfast and their Tortilla Soup for lunch and dinner. I also really like their salsa, so much so that I buy it to go often. The atmosphere is that not that much to brag about but I am there for the food. The only thing my wife complains about is that they do not have many desserts to pick from.
