La Margarita - Market Square, Downtown San Antonio We decided to check out La Margarita during the tail end of Fiesta San Antonio at Market Square. It's one of the most energetic and crowded spots during Fiesta, and even with the new after-6pm entry fee, it's still a great place to soak in the atmosphere. The food booths were as legendary as expected, and overall we had a terrific time before planning to bar-hop downtown. First off, hats off to the bar and wait staff...they were working nonstop and handling the rush with real professionalism. That kind of effort doesn't go unnoticed. That said, my drink; the "Mexican Martina" was a miss. It honestly didn't deliver on flavor, and I'm hoping it was just an off moment rather than the standard. Interestingly, the alcohol hit harder than the actual drinking experience, which isn't really what you want from a signature cocktail. We also ordered chips and queso. It did the job...we were hungry and didn't want to commit to a full meal with so many food booth options around but it didn't stand out. Maybe my expectations have changed since my last visit a couple of years ago, but it felt more average than memorable. La Margarita has been a staple in San Antonio for a long time, and with that kind of legacy, there's always a balance to strike. At times, it felt like things leaned a bit toward the familiar and consistent crowd local professionals, longtime patrons, and Fiesta regulars; rather than pushing for a standout culinary or cocktail experience. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it can come across as a bit status quo. One bright spot: the young man preparing shrimp cocktails was outstanding. He was hustling the entire time, took pride in his presentation, and even checked in on us to see if we needed anything. That kind of attention and energy really elevated the experience. So while nothing takes away from La Margarita's legendary status in San Antonio, I did walk away expecting just a bit more especially when it comes to the drinks and overall consistency. We have out of town guests and we're celebrating Gary's birthday so we met @lamargaritasa for lunch. I had their yummy Pina Colada. Gary had the Taco Salad with chicken, Emily had the Taco Salad with beef, Hubby and I shared the Beef Fajitas for two, and Dad had the Picadillo Taco. For as many times as I've been to San Antonio over the years, I've never had the pleasure to dine at this particular restaurant however, I can tell you for a fact I have missed a great deal. Firstly, on this particular weekend, there was a wine, but it moved extremely efficiently. I'm not sure if it's this way every weekend but if so, go directly to the stand where the hostess is and register your name. Whatever time they give you, it is nearly to the minute that you get seated. The server in our particular case was simply wonderful. Extremely helpful with explaining things on the menu very prompt with service very courteous. What a great pleasure, especially as busy as they were on this particular day. The ambience is typical of a Mexican restaurant. It enhances the experience and adds a great deal to the meal. Now let me give you the shocker. If you read enough of my yelp reviews, you'll find that I'm a seafood fanatic and I must tell you it was totally unexpected but the way to recommended oysters, which I had. I have no idea from where they came, but they were simply wonderful. He recommended them because he told me that when they have them, whoever selects them in the restaurant is particularly good at it and I must tell you he was 100% correct. I find it humorous because I live on the Gulf Coast, which is the Mecca of oysters. However, here I am in Land a fair distance from the coast and probably have the best oysters I've ever had in Texas. As well I had ceviche which was equally wonderful and of course I had fresh tortillas on the side and those were perfect. I really cannot say enough about this particular Restaurant. So we enjoyed sitting outside in market square for dinner. A band played nearby and it was as a warm winter night. But the waiter and service was slow to just feeling like you're being ignored. We had to flag another person down twice. The virgin margarita was solid if a bit sweet. Dinner itself was what you'd expect. Solid Mexican fare that is somewhat forgettable after you leave the meal. The service was prompt and dutiful and the waiter was patient with by terrible Spanish :-) Lighting was adequate, was a hit noisy especially with the roving guitar player and singers, and the seats were hard wood without cushions. The Botana Trio was ok--nothing special. The chips were fine but not large sturdy chips that could handle the dips without cracking off. The refe if beans were good and the cheese was a bit thin and not too flavorful. The fajitas were fabulous and the meat was tender as were the vegetables. The seasoning was just right and the temperature was piping hot. Rice and beans were nothing special. Glad was silky smooth, perfectly tasty and I'd take same. Dined in for dinner on a Monday night. It is located in market square with a very distinctive French Quarter architecture. The host stand is located outside and I was seated right away. The waitstaff greeted and took my drink order within 3 minutes. The menu is your usual Tex-Mex with some seafood offerings. You are given free chips and red salsa, I was not sure if green salsa was an option but I did not ask. I went with the mixed fajita plate with both corn and flour tortillas. Oh I did have a draft Modelo to go along with my meal. The presentation of my meal was a little different as there was no skillet it was plated and my fajitas were not sizzling hot and I definitely got more beans and rice along with onions than beef fajita and chicken fajita. The flavor was good and the meat was tender. I did like the atmosphere and decor inside. However the food was just ok nothing to rave about. It is a touristy spot. My friend and I stopped in for a late lunch while strolling through Historic Market Square. The restaurant is located inside a New Orleans style building, which I loved! The brunch buffet was enticing. We grabbed seats at the bar and had a delightful conversation with the locals sitting next to us. La Margarita is known for their sizzling fajitas & fresh oysters. It's also the sister restaurant to Mi Tierra, which is a few feet away. I ordered the El Picoso Margarita and my friend a Modello on draft. The darling bartender brought us complimentary chips & salsa to nosh on while we contemplated our order. The salsa was mild and flavorful. The chips were warm & fresh. My margarita was also tasty and had a nice kick from the jalapeños. We decided to share the seafood platter, which consisted of fried fish, shrimp, oysters, & wedge fries. The server also brought a plate with ketchup, tartar sauce, & ranch along with a bread roll. I was happy to have the ranch for the seasoned fries. The seafood was coated in a light batter. None of it was greasy. The fish was tender & flaky. The shrimp & oysters were also particularly good. The portion size was generous, and we couldn't finish it all. My wife and I had dinner at La Margarita on a Sunday evening. We arrived around 6:30 PM and were promptly seated. Our waitress was outstanding and extremely friendly. La Margarita is in Market Square which was a 10 minute walk from our hotel. I had the Costillas de Res which is a marinated beef short rib. My wife had a marinated chicken (can't remember the exact name) which she also enjoyed. As I said the service was excellent, food was fantastic, a fair price point for food regarding the quantity and portions, and the restaurant itself had a lot of charm. This restaurant has been around for as long as I can remember. I think the first time I went I was in high school. We were at the market Square yesterday for a fiesta event. Decided that we wanted to sit down and have some Mexican food. We were lucky enough to get a table facing the crowd to people watch. During events, they do have a two hour window in the patio and it starts as soon as you place your first order. We all ordered food and drinks. The margarita prices are not bad. Did I like my margarita? Not really. The frozen was way better than the on the rocks. They definitely use a mixer. I ordered the enchiladas with ranchera sauce. It came with rice, beans and guacamole. Pretty decent for the price. For a restaurant in a tourist section, food was not bad. Our waiter was excellent. You don't go to a tourist trap for the food. I can get better enchiladas, rice, and beans at a cheaper place in my own neighborhood. This food was fine, for a native San Antonian. The atmosphere, however, was worth our time (and paying a 30% premium). We went on a Saturday night, and there were mariachis. The service was on point--very professional. It is a large place, and very crowded, but not as chaotic as Mi Tierra (which is right down the block and owned by the same family). When I say the enchilada plate was 30% more expensive, I mean it cost $14 instead of $11, which is still a very reasonable price for dinner at a place where the wait staff wears ties. The margarita was amazing! They serve about 8 different kinds. Had we chosen to eat outside, we would have been treated to outdoor music on one of the stages at Market Square. This place is absolutely trash and dead environment. Order: Parrillada for 2, 2 carne guisada tacos, 2 pina coladas. chile con queso Carne Guisada Tacos were a good size but cold. Sent them back, they were served but skimpy AF when they brought them back. Was it retaliation? The Chile Con Queso was nice and hot but it was plain cheese. Sent it back, they added few raw tomatoes and a few raw jalapeno pieces AND it came back less than room temperature Parrillada for two was like Parrillada for One... AT BEST and full of crease. Not to mention I didn't even hear it sizzling at all. Not even when it was placed on front of us. The amount of beef fajita was only about 1.5 tacos worth, also not hot, room temperature at best. Such tiny skimpy flavorless chicken leg & thigh. The pork was dry and sitting in a pool of grease. Gotta say the waitress, was an emotionless character. We tried being extra to change her mood and just got nothing back. Being a tourist trap is no excuse for being crap! Absolutely huge waste of $100. Gonna have it contest it with the bank. Stopped in today for lunch with my gf. As i was walking out with her i noticed two creepy looking gentleman eyeing my gf in a provocative manner. The men happened to be a server and a busser. If you are to visit i advise against wearing anything that remotely shows ur body as there are a few creeps who work here and they love to stare. The fish tacos were Okay at best, although the corn tortillas were NOT BLUE as advertised.....but the chili rellanos (which we were assured we could get without the beans and rice and cheese enchilada, just the rellanos) came on a huge plate, with "the works", and was pretty much not edible. The pre-planned doggie bag was intentionally not asked for. The waitress was very, very lacking. The receptionist was professional and patient, and we let her rope us in. We visited during Fiesta and unfortunately had one of the worst service experiences we've encountered. Despite the restaurant being nearly empty, it took 20 minutes to receive our drinks and we had to flag down a manager just to get refills. Our waitress seemed completely indifferent to us, even though we were nothing but kind. The food timing was also a major issue; after 55 minutes, 2 of our family's meals were still missing. My son's dish finally arrived an hour into our visit, but mine never did. I eventually canceled my order. While the manager was apologetic and kind, our waitress remained standoffish and rude when the bill arrived. I ordered the menudo and the tripe smelled FUNKY. Anyone who eats menudo knows that the tripe needs to be clean and this bowl smelled really off. Still, I decided to give it a chance because it's been a while and maybe I was overreacting. I really couldn't tell if this was from a can or not...part of me wishes it was. Both my husband and I got food poisoning from this restaurant despite having gotten different meals. This is definitely a tourist trap type of place with tourist trap prices.
