Its hard to find a solid bakery nowadays in NYC. A lot of the really good ones have closed down, and it makes it really difficult to find a quality bakery without all the fluff. The 7 layer cake is a beautiful work of art and the taste marches. Its a vanilla cake with chocolate frosting topped with strawberry and chocolate mouse. Note to the wise, don't make the same mistake I did. Always look at your cake once it is placed in the box. The display cake looked good, then I did not get to inspect the cake before it was placed in the box. Once I arrived home, I saw that the top part of the cake had a dent in the mouse and strawberry covering which made it look messy. It was an embarrassment to present it as such so I improvised by using the mother's day signage to cover up the blip. When I called to speak with the location about it they dealt with it very professionally and were apologetic about the situation and offered a comp. It was such a relief to have customer service go right after experiencing that. read more

TLDR: Surprisingly good vanilla lobster tail. Schmoop and I came here to check out the lobster tails, which is an Italian pastry we both love. We had low expectations, realizing it was in the middle of Times Square, assuming it would be a tourist trap like most places in Times Square. We were pleasantly surprised! It had really good crispness and delicious filling, which was vanilla forward (used to normal custard). Didn't try anything else except the lobster tail. Mia's Brooklyn Bakery just opened in my neighborhood not too long ago, and it has been busy--for very good reason. I've been wanting to go back myself, but life has been life-ing, so when my mom came to visit and stopped by, I was excited to finally try more of what they offer. We tried the crème brûlée cupcakes, the tres leches cupcake, banana pudding, and my mom got the bread pudding--and baby, we were not disappointed. Everything was so good, so light, and still decadent. Let's start with that crème brûlée cupcake, because whew... it is everything you want it to be. I warmed it up, and the center had that creamy crème brûlée texture, the top had the crystallized sugar, berries on top--it truly delivered. So good. The tres leches cupcake was also adorable--it comes in a little tin and is just as delicious as it is cute. We got the banana pudding for my nana, and she tore that UP, which is all the confirmation I needed. My mom is a serious bread pudding lover, and when she says it's delicious, trust her--it's delicious. I've also had two birthday cakes from Mia's Brooklyn Bakery already, and they did not disappoint. The flavors are always on point, everything tastes fresh, and you can tell care goes into what they make. When you walk in, it feels like a bakery should--so many options it's actually hard to choose. The service is great, the energy is welcoming, and they really offer something for everyone--including vegan options, which I love. It's such a win to have a bakery like this right in the neighborhood. I absolutely recommend them. Go in there. Give them your money. Let them take it. Take pictures. Talk about them. Mia's proved to be a great place for a breakfast get together with long time friends. The service was timely and professional while not being too overly attentive. We were there early and had our choice of seats. Naturally with the baby we were close to the restroom. I'm not sure if there's a changing table as I've never used the restroom at Mia's. I went here with two teen boys and another grown up. This is a beautiful little store with an amazing pastry case. They had a bunch of GF options, which many bakeries do not have. We got an apple turn over, tiramisu cake and a GF chocolate carmel cake. The apple turnover was excellent. Lots of fruit inside. The GF chocolate caramel cake was fabulous. A dark chocolate graham cracker crust with a rich espresso Carmel mousse inside covered with chocolate. The tiramisu cake was our least favorite. Service was good and staff was helpful. landed on getting a couple of raspberry tarts $9 each - they were delicious. Very light mousse filled raspberry. I did not try any cake on my visit though (too early in the morning). I got the spinach ricotta turnover. It was a bit bland. Probably not the place for savory items. I was so excited when I saw this bakery in the UES. Their cakes are so yummy. They are fluffy and flavorful, not overly sweet and just the right amount of icing. They are know for their blackout cake and I totally get it. If you're a local UES person and have tried previous bakery, Little Red Hens, this cake definitely compares to their blackout cake. The blackout cake is heavy but if you share it, it's perfect. The coconut cake was one of the best I've had. The Nutella cake is my personal favorite. Their seasonal was a pumpkin cheesecake and wow, it was one of the best I've had. The only cake that felt average was the caramel cake. It's open until midnight on some nights, a great stop for a dessert on the way home from a night out. The pistachio lobster tail featured delicious pistachio cream that had a good nutty flavor without being too heavy. The pastry shell was fresh and crunchy! I'm not a huge fan of rainbow cookies, but my partner really liked them. He also picked out the fruit napoleon which was tasty overall. Stopped by after dinner one night (so depending on whether you're counting calories or not, a bakery that's open late may be a good or a bad thing). Table service was prompt and friendly. Oddly, our coffee arrived quickly and then these two slices of cake showed up five minutes or so later. Call me weird, but I like my cake with my coffee, not afterwards. The two slices were generous and I'd characterize them as "good but not amazing." For that, College Point-based "La Cheesecake" in Queens has been my favorite for nearly 30 years and I have yet to find another NYC-based cheesecake to beat it. I did appreciate the unconventional flavor choices, however; always good to try something new. Plenty of table seating that's nicely set apart from the counters and walk-ins. So excited to provide good reviews of tasty food and then sometimes you swing and miss. Mia's - which seems very similar to Martha's, but sadly Martha's is better. I will say that the service was excellent, but then it came to the trying - I bought a chocolate peanut butter "bar" or log - not really sure what it was other than not good; there was no balance - it appeared to be chocolate but only really tasted of peanut butter. The second fail was a red velvet cupcake. In order for a red velvet cupcake to work, it should taste like red velvet cake - unfortunately , this version tasted like nothing except for cream cheese frosting. The cake on the last two items - a chocolate frosted yellow cupcake and a crème brûlée cupcake was nice and moist - in fact these were okay, but for the fact that the bruleed top was not hard - when expectations don't match reality...sadly, Mia's is meh. read more
