I called Sunday, 7/14/24, about 1:45 pm, to request electrical service. I explained it was an emergency to resolve the issue. I am a 24/7 caregiver for my 96yo mother and the lack of electricity was creating a hardship. They scheduled an appt on Sunday from 6 pm-12midnite. They also informed me of an additional emergency fee of $169 on top of the service costs. (Immediately they wanted payment info on the spot!). (Now checking the bank acct to make sure they don't even try to levy a charge!) if a Monday appointment would allow me to avoid the extra fee, they said their next available appt would be 2 weeks later! I replied "well I guess it's an emergency and was prepared to pay the fee". As the hours passed, I checked their automated status update for tech arrival which changed each time I called getting later and later. They never showed nor did they communicate any further with me via text or phone. On Monday morning, I called another provider and had the problem serviced and resolved by 11 am! Excellent experience after the disappointment I was left with by Michael and Sons. The "grapevine" told me the ownership has changed and their former good rating has certainly diminished due to unknowledgeable service techs and price gouging. Don't be a chump. Ask neighbors for recommendations. We were in a hurry and called this company, which charged close to $9,000 for a job that consisted mainly of extending two electrical lines up the outside back of the house. Two weeks later, they didn't know our name, wanted $150 "emergency" dispatch to send an electrician out sooner than three weeks. This is no knock on their men, who seem to know their stuff (particularly Hank), but customer good will is clearly worth little to Michael and Son. Fortunately, we have asked around and found better in every respect. If the Michael and Son rep leaves a gooey response to this review, prospective customers should keep in mind she's getting paid for her version. I'm not getting paid. He was extremely punctual, and knowledgeable as he walked through every thing that was wrong, informed me of some other items related to my hot water heater I needed to address, and then fixed my issue quickly. Michael and Sons used to be my go to firm for professional service. They tech are generally respectful and do a good job. I've had one out of about five that was suspect. Here's the rub, they scheduled me twice to come out, only to call me on the last hour and say, oops our tech is running late. My time is valuable, this isn't 1960, where folks are sitting on their behind waiting for the guy to show up. And the "Gold" plan has really turned out to be a big disappointment. Now that I want to cancel they saying that the discounts have already been taken. read more

I went through the entire training program. I can shine some light on the subpar quality y'all are receiving, and hopefully deter any hopeful prospective plumbers. You know how PetSmart has a "training repayment agreement provision"? So do these guys. Before you start training, they make you sign a 2-year contract that makes you legally responsible for paying 14,000$ in if you leave, quit, or get fired. Your pay is commission-based - which you're told during the interview - but your pay is also garnished to pay for the tools, truck, uniforms, mats, and other supplies/replacements you're given. You realistically make almost nothing until you're out of your contract. They encourage you to go to night school to complete your plumbing license but offer no employer endorsement (this could have changed, I would check) to help your further. You're also purposefully overbooked, and it's "encouraged" you work 6-7 days a week. The strongest part of the training are the ride-alongs and the labs, where you get actual, hands-on work. BUT, before you even get to that, you have to sit through a few weeks of "studying", meaning you sit and read Plumbing 101 going over the very basics. It's encouraged you read, as the teacher doesn't really do anything, honestly. They then sit you down and make you watch videos from the early 2000s on how to upsell their products ("but you aren't salesman, don't worry!") to fill in the rest of the time. They tell us in detail to emphasize selling our plans, water heaters, etc. Only after that are you able to finally get some hands-on learning done. You shadow a senior technician on jobs at your own branch for awhile, and are finally able to start on 'labs' when you come back. This part of the learning process is strong, but not strong enough for 90% of their techs to feel prepared enough to do their own jobs. From then on, you're basically done. You think the techs have no idea what they're doing and are only there for your money? You'd be right. We're literally trained that way. read more

Highly NOT recommending! We have requested for a consult. The person came out and took about an hour to just take a look at our HVAC. They wanted to charge us 600$+ for just looking at our HVAC. This is the price without any actual service done. 600$ per hour for just a consult? We had to negotiate down to 200$+. Again, no service was done. The negotiated 200$+ was only for a consult. We even called and made sure that the person that came didn't try to pull anything funny on us. Nope! This place reassured us that IT IS their price. We paid since it is our fault for not confirming the price before letting that person into our house. It might be cheaper to get a neurosurgeon to take a look at our HVAC and get the same result as these guys. Such a scam. read more

We had to spend over $7,500 to replace our entire HVAC system. The service up until this point was good and efficient until a week after installation when our heating system began malfunctioning. Michael and Sons sent someone over who determined that there were issues with one of the parts of our (supposedly) new system. He said he'd send us an email invoice with this report included as usual and we'd receive a call from his manager to schedule a team to replace the new piece. Nothing. We had to call them on three different days to get any answers and to then be told that they didn't order the new piece until AFTER we called them the second time. Every time we call, we're put on hold for every single question we ask. We were told it'd take 2-3 days to get the parts. I understand they can't control the delivery, but we had to wait a month before anyone came to the house. Needless to say, we spent the winter cold despite starting the whole process before winter. We only got to use the heater maybe 2 weeks before spring. So lucky it was a mild winter otherwise, it could've been more serious. Customer service kept making us wait indefinitely because no one was communicating with us. Jump to almost a year later. No one informed us we needed two inspections of the work done until we got a suspicious letter stating we would be fined for not scheduling all inspections. Fine. They sent an inspector who failed the inspection because there was an incorrect wire between the heater and main control panel. Michael and Son's sent two technicians who were confused why they were there. After numerous phone calls over hours, they stated that the inspection included work that they had done and the wire was not part of their original job order; therefore, it was the inspector's fault, but sucks for me because I still have to pay to replace the wire. They quoted me $2,760. I was then informed that this extra charge SHOULD HAVE been part of the original $7500+ quote from the very beginning but THEY HAD FAILED TO INCLUDE IT because they didn't consult their wiring specialist or whatever. I COULD NOT HAVE AFFORDED A +10K HVAC SYSTEM. But that's what they're basically demanding of us for now. We're still reeling from the original cost of the dang thing that I'm about ready to rip out myself. So it seems like Michael and Sons is one of those companies that treats you well as long as you drop a chunk of your savings for them. But when it's their fault they give you parts that don't function and you aren't expected to pay because it's under warranty, they don't give a crap about you and your toddler freezing the whole winter. And when it's their fault for an inspection failing when they should know what an inspection is looking for, the customer has to pay for it. We are a new young family to the east coast. Our relatives are on the opposite side of the country so it's not like we can just leave home and stay somewhere else. We did our research before hiring them - the reviews were so positive but they don't reflect the "service" we've gotten. THESE PEOPLE SUCK AND HAVE TERRIBLE COMMUNICATION. read more

Others started returning my call while the Michael & Son technician was on his way to my house. I'm a Gold service member and it was time for the summer check up so when they called with a reminder I decided to have them install a utility sink that I had purchased to replace an old one. Tech arrived for the HVAC and was very unhappy that he had to go through a crawl space to get to the unit. I had forgotten that they didn't supply the filter so I didn't have one on hand. He wanted to charge me $152.00 for a $42.00 filter and that was the Gold member price. Next the plumber arrived and gave me a quote of $1100.00 to install the utility sink...again that was Gold member cost. I said forget it and it asked how much I thought it would be because it's not an easy job. I called a local plumber and it took him approximately 45 minutes...$150.00 Needless to say this is the last time that Michael & Son will be used in my house. DO NOT fall for the gold member service plan, it's useless. read more

I had several plumbing issues, so called Michael & Son, as they had done an excellent job two years before cleaning the ducts and installing a new media filter for my HVAC. I was told by the person who answered the phone that they would send two plumbers, one for the clogged drain upstairs and another for the other issues: loose kitchen faucet, downstairs toilet not flushing completely, and a leak in the laundry room. The first one arrived on time and I sent him upstairs to deal with the clogged drain. 20 minutes and $325 later, he asked if there was anything else and I said there was but another technician was supposed to be coming to handle that. He left. Finally, an hour past the four hour window I had been given to wait, I called to ask if the guy is on the way or if I should reschedule. I was told that the second plumber was unnecessary and had been canceled... without notifying or getting any input from me, the customer. I asked if the $69 fee for the second visit could be waved for the inconvenience of having to stay home and wait a second day due to error and lack of communication on their part. I was put on hold for a few minutes and then told no it cannot be waved. I said, ok I'll take my business elsewhere and they said have a nice day. Not giving any more of my money to such an inconsiderate and disorganized company. read more

I made an appointment for an HVAC tech to diagnose a problem with our A/C system with an arrival time between 12 and 2pm. 2pm came with no text, call or notification of lateness. I called customer service and was put on an excessively long hold twice. When I finally got someone on the line to tell me that my technician was running late, I asked them what time they'd arrive. They said 3pm, which came and went with - again - no call or text to notify me. I won't reschedule. I understand things are a bit crazy in the world right now and I would have been 100% understanding if they were late. But they need to INFORM the customer if that's going to happen. And there was no followup either - no effort to find out if they showed up or if I wanted to reschedule with a discount. This is a breakdown of customer service in the worst way. read more

They charged me $69 for the estimate- which came back at $1800. When the cigarette-reeked condescending workers arrived to do the work, they looked at it an said "...there's no way I'm doing this for $1800; this is more like $3600-$4200...". I sent them away. Absolute rip-off. They charge 69$ to come out but that does not cover them actually doing anything. I told the scheduling lady I wanted an electrician because the breaker was tripping when multiple appliances were running and I wanted him to check if the breaker was ok or faulty. The electrician arrived but would not even look at the breaker till I agreed to pay another 253$ "troubleshooting fee". When scheduling, they do not tell you about this. I would never call this company again. Their schedulers are really nice and you get the wrong impression that this is a company that knows what it is doing but unfortunately that is NOT the case. Update: I spoke to the owner and he confirmed that their 69$ charge is for doing nothing. He said- If the electrician has to take out his equipment, that is an additional charge that we cannot predict in advance- in our case that was 253$. For that charge, I had to insist on him at least doing a thorough job- check the outlets in addition to the breaker and make sure everything was safe. On his own after charging 253$- he only said the breaker was fine. The first time I called this company, I spent 69$ and 2 hours to be told that it was not his job. Either they do this on purpose or their schedulers are poorly trained and do not know that their technicians do not do anything for the dispatch fee of 69$. Only call them if you are in the mood to see their technician's face and shake their hand for 69$. If you are hoping to get a professional assessment or advice or to get any work done, call someone else. read more

I called this company to replace the drain under my bathroom sink and maybe unclog the pipe. He gave me a price of $357 for drain clearing and another $320 for replacing the P trap under the sink. I told him to leave and I'm not paying him the $69 for showing up to give me a ridiculously high price for an hour of work and $15 in materials. He said "See you in court" and as he was leaving he said " You can put that $69 toward your retirement" in a nasty tone. This is unacceptable!! There are plenty of good plumbers out there that won't rip you off. I wouldn't use this company for anything and neither should you. read more

I have an annual contract with Michael and Son to inspect and repair my HVAC system twice a year. The last inspection was less than a month ago so everything should have been in good working order. Little did I know, they did not even look at the humidifier, clearly attached to the top of the furnace duct, much less replace the filter that was so clogged that crystals had formed. Well, the tube draining the water broke down today, leaked water all over my basement floor that even spread to a nearby carpet. During my first call, I clearly requested that a technician come out from "water mitigation services" to vacuum up the pooled water on of my carpet, ASAP. I called Michael and Son by 1:00 pm today, and by around 2:30 pm a technician did come out, looked at the damage, took photos, and replaced the filter, so the water leak stopped. I was assured that the mitigation team was on its way too. By 4 pm, no one had arrived so I called again, and was assured that someone would be here within 45 minutes. It is now 8:25 pm, and I have been just informed that it is too late to come out tonight and there is no guarantee that I will be "First Call" tomorrow morning. I asked to speak with a supervisor to escalate my request, and was told repeatedly that no one is available. How can Michael & Son advertise that they provide emergency service when they don't? I have an annual contract and am considered to be a "Gold Service Customer". If this is how they treat me, just imagine how they will treat you. read more

I tried calling the office after 10am, and was greeted by someone that seemed like I woke up and did not want to work. They put me on hold for 10 minutes and never came back, so I hung up. I finally received a call around 11am to say they double booked and that they'd be out soon. No word from them yet, but just received a call from someone there asking what I needed so I'm pretty confused right now where this hole experience stands, other than they will not be getting my business if this is how they treat people. read more

I waited a couple days before writing this because I wanted to make sure I had time to let my frustration settle - I wanted to give as fair a review as I could. Apologies for the long form review, but I want to be as detailed as possible. tldr; I was incredibly disappointed with my experience, the company cost me multiple vacation days, and the customer service was abysmal. I contacted Michael & Sons to run a 220 line and GFCI box from my main breaker box to a new hot tub we had delivered. Scheduling was easy and the tech arrived on time to give an estimate. I knew it would be higher, but I also figured it was worth it for the quality work and guarantees. The estimate was $2,600. I agreed to it (though an electrician friend of mine said even with high-end time and materials, the average electrician would have cost HALF that). Again: I wanted quality. The tech was scheduled to show up on a Monday between 8 and 5 - it was supposed to be a 6-hour job so I figured they'd be there at least by 11 or so. I took off work to make sure I was there all day. At noon, I hadn't heard from anyone so I texted the tech. He told me they had bumped me to send him to an appointment first thing in the morning. As a result, he arrived at 2:30. He completed 1/3 of the job and left for the day, but said they had me on the schedule for first thing Wednesday. I was annoyed, but understood. I took another day off work. Wednesday morning came and went. When I texted him at noon, he said that they didn't have me on the schedule. Also, that he'd been injured. So he wasn't sure when he'd be by again. I called customer service, was passed around for 20 minutes before a manager said they'd have the tech out to me that afternoon. I told her that he said he was injured, and they said he was ok to do the job. He called me to say that he wasn't going to do it, and that he was going to have to get a doctor's note to come back to work. He said he might be able to come by Friday. I got a confirmation saying from dispatch saying he'd be there Friday. I took off work again. Friday morning came, I texted him again, and he told me he wasn't allowed to return to work because of his doctor's note. No one from M&S reached out besides the tech. He said he'd come over the next day - on his day off - to finish the job. Obviously, I was pissed by this point. The company had put all the onus for communication and scheduling on a tech who was injured. Saturday morning he arrived, not happy about working Saturday understandably, but completed the job. The work was good. The tub is running. All ended well. But the fact that I paid a significant amount more than I would for a local one-person shop left me feeling tremendous frustration. No one from the company ever called to check up, or to offer any kind of compensation - hey, 10% off, a free outlet - something to make up for the 2 1/2 vacation days I had to take from work. This experience was beyond disappointing. It was frustrating. And I felt like I had received far less than I had paid for when it came down to customer experience. To conclude, you all missed a huge opportunity to make things right - multiple times. That's what a quality, high-end electrician does. I can't see paying more for your services anymore, because the value that comes with it simply isn't there. What a shame. read more
