I normally go to a Bishops in Southern California, so while I'm temporarily in DC, I decided to try the Navy Yard location. The vibes are immaculate--everyone was nice, funny, and welcoming. I came in for my usual gray coverage, and they did a GREAT job with the color. Unfortunately, the haircut was a very different experience. I showed the stylist a reference photo of my usual longer, layered cut. She said she wanted to even out my hair, which sounded completely reasonable, but she removed several inches without confirming how much length I was comfortable losing. I left with a short, rounded, mushroom-shaped bob that looked nothing like the reference and made my face look much rounder than I wanted. I was so mortified that I took a photo outside and sent it to my longtime stylist in Southern California, who replied, "whoa." I'm leaving three stars because the staff and atmosphere were lovely and the color was excellent. But I really hope the salon encourages clearer communication before making a major change in length. In the meantime, I'll be wearing a ponytail until it grows out. read more

Edit: After reading other reviews, it's clear "the problem" my stylist had with me is homophobia. I am not the first person to complain that the team here is avoidant about anything that they consider gender non-conforming. If you want to make this right refund my money, I don't wanna come back to your salon. You don't treat people like that. The price was OKish, but I got a really mediocre haircut. I'm a guy and I haven't gotten a haircut in a long time and I'm starting a new job soon and I needed to look professional. I needed some help like picking a shorter hairstyle and the stylist didn't want to help me make decisions at all. I had to ask for product at the end because she just wanted to kick me out with giant puffy hair because she brushed it when it was dry really really hard. I washed and brushed my hair right before I got in the car to go to the salon and there was no reason to brush out my hair like I was a kid before picture day. My hair feels so fried now. I have 3C curly hair and I left feel like my hair looks like a giant triangle. None of the staff would talk to me and everyone was really really hostile and unfriendly and when I was paying the owner started screaming (I think at me?) about how I didn't want to get a color on my hair like I had booked because they told me they were gonna charge me twice the price when I got there and then she complained that I was losing her business money. I'm gonna end up going to another salon somewhere else because my hair looks terrible. I asked for the bare minimum and she did less than that. I felt like she just didn't want to touch me or work on me. I don't know if they don't like cutting men's hair or if it's some other reason. I wanted a regular short men's haircut and instead I got this really weird bob cut. I asked the stylist why she left the back of my hair like 4 inches longer than the sides and she said it was because of my "curl pattern". I gave her the benefit of the doubt that it would look different once it relaxed or something, but it looks really uneven all over. I also had to ask her to even out her own work a few times because she would just leave random strands of hair three times the length of the other strands and like claim did not notice. I have to try to get it fixed before I start my new job because I don't want my boss to think that this is what I bring to the table. Who gives someone this weird asymmetrical cut when they just wanted everything the same length? I told her I didn't like my hair and she said "well, what do you want me to do about it?". She just kept asking me over and over again what I wanted and I kept telling her like how I wanted it fixed and she kept saying like she basically didn't know how to cut my hair. It wouldn't kill their staff to actually treat the people who come in through the door like human beings instead of like an imposition that they just want to go away. If they weren't going to do a good job for the price they quoted me online they shouldn't have taken my business. It's super awkward having your hair ripped out of your head repeatedly because someone won't just go get a wide tooth comb and they also won't speak to you. You don't brush 3C hair with a paddle brush as hard and as fast as you can and then claim you know how to handle curly hair. I really hate this haircut and I hate how much my scalp hurts right now because someone wouldn't take the time to comb my hair the right way. My stylist literally hid in the back of the salon for 20 minutes texting on her phone instead of cleaning her station like she said she was and she was late to my appointment. I don't know that she knows that I could see her reflection in the salon mirrors and I know she was avoiding me. The only time my stylist smiled or made any kind of conversation with me was when I was paying for my haircut and I got the feeling like she was just being nice so that I would tip. Thanks for making me look like Lord Farquad from Shrek. I don't know who hurt you, but I don't deserve this sloppy pageboy bob cut. read more

This location does not get enough credit. It was my first time at Bishops hair salon, and I was a little nervous but when Janie asked me to take a seat, I felt super comfortable and put to ease. She was so kind and warm and helped me reach my vision. At the time, my hair was a little darker more like a light brunette and I explained I wanted some golden highlights. We quickly found a vision and went for it. Janie went above and beyond for me. Her patience and craft were absolutely amazing. Even after I sat in the salon chair for so long Janie blow dried and styled my hair. I will be returning here, and I would 100% recommend others to go here as well. read more

I LOVED bishops! I've been on the hunt for a gender inclusive hair salon for almost half a decade in DC and I finally found one! Their staff is mostly BIPOC and as an Indian person, I frequently would go to hair salons with people who did not look like me and did not understand the importance of a good hair cut as a Brown person. As soon as I arrived, I knew this place was going to be great. The ambiance and decor of the space itself is so welcoming. I walked in, but I suggest making an appointment. I got there when they opened so I did not have to wait, but they quickly got pretty busy. One of their stylists, James took me back and asked what I wanted. I recently cut my hair extremely short and I needed it cleaned up. I told him what I wanted and what I didn't want, specifying a specific vibe I wanted and he not only delivered, but was a delight to experience about 20 minutes with in conversation. Prior to going, I also checked out their website. Something I noticed on their websites that is cool is their space is accessible, you can request a silent hair cut, they are locally owned, and they have a 7 day fix-it policy, so if you leave and realize you want something different, you can go back and get it fixed! I scheduled an appointment for a simple long hair cut and was given Chau Le as a stylist. He washed my hair and for some unknown reason put a towel over my entire face while doing so(?) then got upset my hair was tangled after because I have fine hair, started tearing away at my hair with a comb causing me to lose some hair, kept slapping on more and more conditioner for no reason after just washing my hair, sighing loudly as if I was inconveniencing him while pulling really hardly on my hair, then shoved a brush in my hand and told me to brush my own hair. He walked off and I was so uncomfortable that I pulled aside another stylist and asked her to either leave immediately or be switched to someone else. Thankfully they were able to switch me and the new stylists that helped me were both very nice and tried to make the best out of a really crappy situation, but avoid Chau Le if you have long hair at all. He honestly really ruined my day and simply because of him, I will not be returning. read more

Great first experience with Jade. I'm surprised that there are no reviews yet since Bishop's opened in August. During my visit, the place was hopping with 4 men getting trims and a woman getting a color. I went online to book an appointment and it said that there we no spots for today & that they accept walk-ins. I phoned to see if there was availability for a walk-in and they were able to accommodate. It's a-la-carte menu and you pick and choose what you need, and pay according. I didn't request anything extraordinary: I'm enjoying long hair for the first time in more than a decade and yet Jade elevated my simple request (help with the ends/making me my best self) into something chic, more than I expected. Have been here 5-6 times and always has been good. just went recently and quite honestly had the worst haircut of my entire life. not to be dramatic, but I told her the same thing I've told my barber for 15 years and she was the only one to ever mess it up. after apologizing for it, she then half-heartedly "shaved" my beard. there is so much hair and stubble left I truly don't know why I paid for it. I like to think of myself as a pretty even-headed guy. Even so, I'm kinda floored by what happened to me at this location. Backstory: I call this place to ask if there are any spots available in 15 minutes, person on other end of the phone says yes, so I say great reserve me a spot for 15 minutes from now. You probably know where this is going. I walk over, and by the time I do, 15 minutes later, it was explained to me that 3 people had reserved online between when I'd called and arrived, and that they had precedence over me. What the he.. The place was empty. Zero clients. None. Ghost town. But they still couldn't see me because these 3 online appointments were "on their way" (supposedly). Mind you I'm getting about the simplest hair cut you can get, and even said so when I "reserved" my time. Any other place would have squeezed me in. Quick win. Not here. Basically, phone reservations mean *absolutely nothing* at this place. In addition, prospective clients who aren't there but who might show up matter more to this business than people who are there and did show up and reserved ahead of time. Unreal. What an absolute waste of my time. 0/5 for customer service. Total PR fail. read more

While I left the salon happy with my length, I recently discovered why my usually thick hair felt thinner since my cut: parts of my hair have been cut to be only ~2 inches from my scalp. Yes, it is just hair and it will grow back but I am a little broken-hearted to know it will take years for those pieces to grow back out to the normal length. read more

I went to see Tishaun for my first haircut in over 9 months, with no ideas or inspiration really, and she knew exactly what I needed after chatting for a little while. A deep conditioning treatment and some long layers later, I was feeling fresh and looking great! Tishaun was fun to chat with and really knew her stuff. This was my first visit to Bishop's in Navy Yard and I really liked it and will be back. The space is fun and fresh, the music is on point, and the services are all à la carte, so you pay for exactly what you want, and nothing more. The value is great - women's long haircuts start at $50, which is excellent for D.C. Since it was my first visit to the shop, Tishaun even comped my blowout (which was amazing.) Covid measures: they took my temp and had me wash my hands upon arrival, and masks were in place the whole time, felt safe! Will recommend to my friends! read more

Very disappointed. I have tried to do a walk-in now twice and both times refused. Sorry we have no appointments. My haircut takes 10 min. Ok no problem. I will try again. No luck. So maybe they are that busy and truly cannot do Walk ins. Though if you are going to advertise that you do the. Give options. Both times I came a few hours before closing. This is unacceptable!!
