Advised by Dr Michael Gazzaniga, I took the Rezum treatment earlier this year for my BPH (prostate enlargement) shortly after my 70th birthday. So far, the outcome of the treatment has been very encouraging. For more than 6 months now, most of my BPH symptoms have improved. More importantly, I don't need to wake up at night several times for urination since this treatment. My BPH symptoms at 57 years old were moderate, but getting worse, and Dr. Gazzaniga COMPLETELY fixed me with the Rezum procedure! I had REZUM done by Dr. Gazzaniga about 2 months ago. Age 62, taking Tamsulosin the last 12 years for moderate BPH symptoms. Some days it wasn't a bother. But increasingly weak stream and dripping was getting to be a bother. Didn't want to take Tamsulosin any more (it wasn't doing much anyway). So I decided to get it done. A few weeks before procedure Dr G did a cytoscopy for a quick look, I thought if this little thing was that uncomfortable the Rezum tool is gonna be awful. But it wasn't. I took a couple pain pills and a xanax as prescribed, was relaxed going into the procedure, and used Pro-Nox system nitrous where you hold the inhaler and administer it to yourself. It made a big difference. Really took me out of the moment. I inhaled it deeply the whole time, about 5-10 minutes, until he said it's done. I was aware of some very minor pain/discomfort, but the procedure was a breeze. Didn't even notice the catheter going in. Had catheter 4 days, it was the worst part of the experience. Couldn't sleep more than 2-3 hours at a time, it didn't hurt, but I was worried it would tangle up or overfill while sleeping. Just a gross thing to have hanging out of your body and strapped on your leg. I pulled it out myself on day 4 per Dr G's instructions, which was an adventure, but it came out easily. Urination was worse than before treatment for about a week, slow flow, a bit of blood and debris coming out for about 5 weeks (no pain or burning at any time). But now the flow is stronger. I am peeing better, it is an improved flow that starts and shuts off like it did when I was younger. NO effect on sex function. I mulled this over for the last couple years, couldn't decide largely out of fear of the procedure and catheter. The procedure was much less of an ordeal than I expected. The catheter was unpleasant, but well worth the result. It is very satisfying to have the urine stream arcing strongly and loudly across to the far side of the toilet again. Dr Gazzaniga has been my urologist for about 7 years now, and also monitors my prostate PSA/PHI levels. I highly recommend him if you are considering REZUM or for any other urology issues. read more

Dr. Gazzaniga is a personable urologist, however their insurance billing practice needs questioning. You are treated for one thing and the insurance is billed for another. And yes, the insurance would not cover the expensive bogus coded billing. Don't expect any help at all from the staff. By the time I waited for some answers the dispute period had lapsed. By then they sent me to COLLECTIONS! And yes, I paid in full. read more

I am a 68 year male living in Orange County, California. Over the past decade I've been dealing with BPH issues and have seen three different urologists. I am otherwise a very healthy and active person. Ten years ago I had a bout of severe urinary retention, which in part was due to or associated with BPH. I was prescribed alpha-blockers to manage the symptoms. The alpha blockers worked for a few years, but with decreasing effectiveness. I had two additional urinary retention events over the past 20 months or so. I was directed to Dr. Gazzaniga by a friend. Dr. G did some diagnostic work, including estimating and determining the size and geometry of my prostate. We discussed non-pharmaceutical options, including minimally invasive surgical techniques, but decided to monitor the situation. Early this year had another urinary retention event. I was tired of Foley catheters, self-cathing, etc., and decided I wanted a more permanent solution. My wife and I visited Dr. G to explore options. After some discussion, Dr. G felt that the REZUM technique was best suited for my condition and desired outcome. Dr. G had performed dozens of REZUM procedures and I felt like I was in good hands. I decided to do the procedure, which is an in-office procedure that takes less than hour including prep time and post-procedure instructions, etc. The actual procedure lasts about 5 minutes. There is plenty of information about REZUM on the internet so I will not discuss here but when they call it "minimally invasive" it truly is. I left the office with a Foley catheter (some folks may not), which I kept in place for about 5 days. I noticed a little improvement with urine flow, etc., if the following several days. After the swelling resided, which took maybe two weeks or so, the urine flow was markedly improved, urgency was gone, and I felt like it was successful. It has now been about 3 months. I stopped taking Flomax (alpha-blocker) about 2 months ago. 90% of the time I sleep through the night. I never have that feeling of having to run to the bathroom. Additionally, REZUM does not (typically) effect ejaculation or erection--two things that can happen with more invasive approaches. I told Dr. G recently that my only regret is that I did not have this procedure done sooner. Men, if you are having symptoms related to BPH you can put band aids on the condition by the use of drugs and do the "watchful waiting" approach. Or you can explore more permanent solutions by consulting with Dr. G. He has various options available to you depending on your unique situation. You will not be disappointed. read more

Dr. Gazzaniga has been very helpful and careful going thru the steps to accurately diagnose my BPH problem. He suggested the fairly new Urolift procedure. He advised me on the insurance coverage so there were no surprises. It's been six months and I'm very satisfied with the procedure. I think he also instructs other urologists on doing this procedure.
