so, this is the first time i've been back in over a year.... I want this to be a good review..: but unfortunately it is not. we were so excited... ordered two great old fashioneds, as we sat at the bar. Egg plant and flat bread was good. (egg plant was exceptional!) Two nice glasses of wine.... and then, they forgot about us.... waiting... waiting.... nothing. 35 min passed with NOTHING. I told my husband that we should leave. he said he was embarrassed. I said, it's embarrassing to stay here and pretend they didn't forget about us... he became frustrated by me wanting more service and quite frankly, attention. it was not a fun disagreement. needless to say, I got up and left. I told the hostess downstairs that I didn't want to make a scene, but I don't want to be a chump either... my husband took food to go and then paid and met me by the car. look at the pictures.... if this isn't proof that they forgot about us, i'm not sure what is... both plates over 20+ dollars. look at them... the lasagna is inedible as it is so burnt, the top layer is impermeable with a fork... the pasta is good, but truly super small serving. yes pictures speak a 1000 words. Michael's, We were super excited to go back.... but tonight was bad. On the recommendation of a friend we came here for the first time tonight. Every person we came in contact with from the hostesses to the servers were very helpful, friendly and attentive. The food was amazing. Everything we had was delicious and we can't wait to go back to sample more dishes. We ordered the squash blossoms, the burrata, the gnocchi with short ribs (all shared), and the duck breast and the branzino. I have nothing negative to say! Oh, and the olive oil cake. All delicious! First time there last night, I have heard about Michael's on Naples from few people, a suggestion came up for me through Resy, so I thought nice Saturday evening, let's head to Long Beach. So glad I went, love the ambience, our server Madeline was awesome, and the food was delicious, reminded me of the food I had in Italy few years ago. The rooftop is really pretty, and I love the ocean breeze that flows through. We came here to scope out potential rehearsal dinner venues - we hadn't had much luck thus far. The food is great, and the rooftop is awesome; so far so good! Started with a Flatbread, the crust is grilled and has just the right texture. I can't recall the ingredients of this flatbread as well as I would like, but I believe it had duck and potato. The pastas have deceptively simple description. The Capellini Vongole is fairly straightforward, but they do a great blend of sharp garlic and briny clams. The Pappardelle is made perfectly, and there is so much fatty, melty beef cheek on top! Sadly, the 5000-dollar minimum of the rooftop bar, is not within our budget. Not that it would keep me from coming back. I've always wanted to dine here so my beau surprised me with a night before Christmas dinner. The atmosphere was nice and romantic even with the crazy rain outside. There's not much seating since this is a smaller restaurant, so reservations are definitely recommended. There's also seating upstairs, but we were told that the menu is slightly different. If you wanted to order off the main menu- they'd be happy to accommodate that. I don't remember the gentlemen's name that helped us pick out a nice glass of wine, but he was wonderful and very helpful. We ordered the Branzino (Mediterranean sea bass) and Michael's Pasta as main dishes. For starters ordered sausage on polenta (delicious) and the calamari (not so delicious). I was expecting what many people probably expect when ordering calamari- fried calamari. This was an unbreaded, NOT fried, cold dish. Maybe this is how it's traditionally served? In any case- I didn't enjoy it at all, and wished they had advised that they served it that way. Overall- I had a great dining experience and would love to visit again. I'd consider Michael's a restaurant I'd like to dine at for special occasions because it is a special little spot. read more

Just had New Years Eve pre-Fix dinner. Starving..,. Portions were so small we kept waiting for the "meal" to arrive. Service was wonderful as always- food was good but for the price 5 VERY small appetizers sized portions is definitely not enough. We enjoy Michael's but probably won't do New Years again unless they actually serve a dinner. Seriously a plate of pasta would have been appreciated. I ordered the Rotolino Funghi E Cotto for takeout. It took over an hour from the moment I placed the order, and when I got home I realized it wasn't cooked all the way - thick and doughy. My husband and I have been to this restaurant a few times before and had good experiences. We went this time for Valentine's Day for the fixed price menu, which we were ok with. I was expecting $90/per person quality food-we got under salted risotto, grocery store quality dessert, and the tiniest oyster. I really don't remember liking one thing from the menu. If you're looking for a high quality restaurant go to Taco Maria in SoCo-their fixed priced dinner always delivers. Don't go to faux fancy -Michael's. Also, Michael's charged a 20% gratuity without letting my husband know upon making reservation. $240 for two people for mediocre Italian food. Would be 5-Stars: We went in on Friday December 28th, I believe it was a 7:45 reservation. We truly think Michael's is a fine culinary experience and an excellent restaurant however we felt that we were considered, for lack of better words, second class due to presenting $125 gift card up front and the service mirrored it. We felt a bit rushed on the service. Another observation: I ordered a second Moscow Mike but and when I asked why is it in such a smaller copper mug and the response was: "it's the same amount of alcohol". I would think if the comment was made the server would possibly accommodate the portion. Again, we felt customers should be treated equally even after presenting a gift card. Maybe we are over thinking the experience however at the price level it should be exceptional like it normally is. I do like to tip appropriately but in this case we decided to leave 10% which we felt necessary to make a point! Excellent food!!! read more

I had never been here before and I booked a table for 2 for my date and I tonight. Upon arriving, I gave the hostess my name and she got distracted talking with the other hostesses about another table. A couple minutes later, she got back with us and we were seated upstairs on the patio. I had booked the reservation for the dining room downstairs, but I noticed it mentioned seating reservations weren't guaranteed so I didn't contest. After sitting for about 10 minutes, the host who sat us came and confirmed my name, and then walked away. 5 minutes later, one of the younger hostesses came up, almost in tears, saying they sat us at the wrong table and the original table was "throwing a fit" and asked if we could move. We were amicable and obliged. We had both worked in restaurants in our past and understand that accidents happen, however the older host who sat us was not apologetic, nor did she offer us anything to make up for the mistake. I'm not looking for hand outs, but if I had made such a silly mistake I would have certainly done something to make up for it. We spent $200 on our dinner, and we weren't so much as comped a round of drinks or dessert? We could have said no, it's your mistake and not the customers fault. On top of it all, she sent a younger clearly less experienced hostess to come ask us to move instead of coming herself. This was extremely unprofessional. We were paraded past the customers who were "throwing a fit" and it felt as if we had done something wrong. If this would have been a first date, you would have completely ruined our evening. Came back for the Resteraunt down stairs. Wow, outstanding. Tyler was our server and was great. Loved the halibut! Loved the drink they make, napleini, delish! Try the pasta with Pork sausage. One more tip: your heaters are too small and are for sure to high. There great for global warming though. They heat 10ft down then blow out the leaks in your leaky canopy. The fix is to lower them and get more. Looks like either your contractor didn't have a clue about how they work or you ran out of money. Great food, Tyler's great server skills, very cool atmosphere upstairs, but they totally dropped the ball with the awning. I hope you didn't pay the contrary His retention. The blowing wind on my back was rude. Then it started raining and of course water started dropping on my phone. Pretty soon all of the tables were getting wet. Sorry but we won't be back for a while. Our part of 6 had dinner here tonight. We were seated promptly and helped by a very friendly server. However, the service was so slow. It took more than 60 minutes (I think it was closer to 90) to get our meals. Given the limited menu, that kind of a delay is ridiculous. While some dishes were very good, the majority was just mediocre. I've heard rave reviews for this place, so maybe we caught them on an off night. They did offer us two free desserts due to the delays, which was appreciated, but I don't know that we'll be back in the near future. read more

Schizophrenia beats dining alone -- Oscar Levant The best restaurant in Long Beach, and I'm not sure second best is really that close. I have ate here a variety of times over the years, on the top level, in the main dining room, on a TravelZoo, at full price, with my own wine, or ordering off the Italian centric handcrafted list, with lovers, with friends, with lovers who became friends; Michael's never fails to impress! Service is top notch even when I'm spilling water or wine across the floor (I'm clumsy) and the food is never short of excellent. I prefer the outside patio especially on a warm summer night. Favorites include the Speck Flatbread, the "dessert" cheese plate which always becomes an appetizer, the lasagna, the various pastas of the day, the sustainable seafood...there is something for everyone. I will not detail everything I ate or the blow by blow of all my visits here, but I have never had something that wasn't at least very good with a few dishes hitting the sublime category. The even have a wine club that gets you free corkage (normally $20.00) when you join. But, the wine list is also very good and they usually have a Super Tuscan or Brunello by the glass that I enjoy (if we need more wine beyond what I have brought. And who doesn't at some point need more wine??!!) Water is filtered in house so they do have the best pricing on sparkling water which I prefer. There is one catch though. Alas, if I am dating you I cannot take you here. I made an agreement with a close ex-GF that we would not take our future partners here as this restaurant meant something to our relationship. So I can only go with friends because really, some things should be kept meaningful and if a restaurant was special to a couple, it would be weird to take other partners here (and I would prefer to make new memories with future significant others). So that aside, a restaurant that I cannot believe I never reviewed and along with Mar'sel at Treanna resort, my favorite coastal restaurant in this part of Southern California. Michael's On Naples is a lovely restaurant in Long Beach. The restaurant is 2 floors, the downstairs is a bit dark and stiff but the upstairs outdoor patio is beautiful! I suggest eating upstairs if the weather is nice, the atmosphere is lovely. Service is great, our server was attentive and offered suggestions. For the most part dishes came out well timed except the main course and dessert. I guess they bring things out as they're ready which in a way is nice because your meal wont be cold but 2/4 entrees came out and the other 2 took longer. Same thing with dessert, our desserts arrived and by the time we got our coffee, we were nearly finished with our dessert. So timing could be a bit better. Portions are a bit small which is positive and a negative. I ordered a cocktail, salad, shared an appetizer, fish and dessert and felt I could eat more! So I either have a massive appetite or things ARE small ha. Some menu highlights - 1. squash blossoms - even though this is fried it still feels like a light dish, I really enjoyed the stuffed ricotta. This is a good sharing option! 2. pesto and mushroom pizza - not a traditional pizza but very delicious, I thought this was one of the best things ordered. It's actually very light and incredibly flavorful. It's a very thin crust which is my favorite! It's cut into little squares so sharing is easy. 3. branzino - this was a bit bland to be honest, a VERY light dish so if you're on a diet or watching your weight, get this ha! It's just branzino, green beans and watercress. 4. seabass - my mother and sister ordered this and I thought it had a bit more flavor compared to my branzino. It does come with rice and roasted tomatoes. 5. chocolate hazelnut tarte - small, dense but lovely. This is rich but because it's small it's not overwhelming. 6. aperol spritz - they made a great aperol spritz! It was light, refreshing and delicious. Perfect for a summer night : ) I do think prices are a bit steep and I did not leave feeling, "wow, this was an incredible meal." If you're coming here because you saw some delicious meals posted on Yelp, don't.. Because you won't get it. New York steak with gnocchi.. FAIL. Lobster pasta.. FAIL. Upstairs patio with live music.. FAIL. These were the reasons why we came to Michael's and none of the above were available. Apparently the entire upstairs is closed for renovations and they frequently change the menu, so you can never order what you came for. The restaurant is small and dark. The music is so quiet and boring, which makes for a really sleepy atmosphere. If they played more upbeat music like deep house or had a live jazz band, that would spice things up. Thank goodness we brought a bottle of wine to keep us entertained. I opted for the New York steak with potatoes. It was good, but overpriced. When you pay $43 for steak, you don't expect to enjoy the mushrooms more than the meat. But yeah the mushrooms were delectable. They probably used a whole stick of butter in that dish, but if I don't see it, the calories don't count. Ha! My boyfriend ordered a lobster "ravioli" dish that was buttery and had great texture, but was lacking salt and seasoning overall. The size of his entree was also so small, I could've stuffed all these pieces in my mouth in one bite. He left Michael's still hungry. Our server was very receptive and had a really positive and great attitude. He came by to add salt and grated cheese to the lobster dish and gave us great recommendations for dessert. (The almond cake.. The almond cake!) WHOoaaa....Ladies, I'm feeling pretty proud of my man right now. Typically, our relationship goes like this: HIM: LAZY, Plays it safe with restaurant choices (ie. Maestros), Obedient ME: His crazy YELPy girlfriend, always researching and whispering restaurant choices into his ear. Well this Valentines Day, he was NOT LAZY, RESEARCHED this ZAGAT RATED ROMANTIC restaurant that I had NOT YET HEARD OF, and kept all of it a quiet little secret until we arrived! TEARS OF JOY... Anyways, on to the review! When we got there for our 8pm reservation, there was a mad rush of valentines day traffic they were handling and we were asked to wait a few minutes. We took that opportunity to hit up some cocktails at the bar! $12 each. I got the PROSECCO NERO, it was tasty, bubbly, and it was STRONG. BF got the GINGER GROUSE (grouse scotch whiskey, lemon juice, ginger, simple syrup), he had a hard day at work. They took a while to make, we were actually seated before they were done, but they were delicious. Our waitress explained the VALENTINES DAY PRE-FIXE MENU for $90- 5 COURSES!! ~All pastas are made in house same day, they use seasonal and local ingredients and herbs grown on their roof. ~Oddly, they don't serve tap water, or bottled water (in an effort to conserve or something?) and they have their own water filtration system that you have to pay $1/pp for. So basically you have to pay $1 to get any freaking water at this place, which is not a lot of money but whhhhatttttttt. ~CORKAGE FEE: $20 1. STUZZICHINO- Kumamoto Oyster and Pink Bubbly! THIS girl (me) LOVES bubbly so I took it upon myself to also drink my BFs glass. The oyster was fresh and pretty yummy considering we didn't slather it in Tabasco as per usual. ;P 2. ANTIPASTI -AHI TUNA TARTAR: I played it safe with this one, it was your standard Ahi Tuna Tartar... -DEVILS GULCH QUAIL STUFFED WITH FENNEL SAUSAGE: We were nervous to eat quail but really it just tastes like rotisserie chicken! This was an interesting dish which also went well with the sausage (they make the sausage in house too). We were like hmm...we actually kinda like this...*thumbs up* 3. PASTA -GNOCCI W BRAISED OXTAIL: My BF hit another winner! This was YUMMMMYYYY. The gnocchi were like fluffy little pillows of heaven. I HATE Gnocchi UNLESS it is REALLY GOOD, in which case I LOVE it...know what I mean??? -RAVIOLI W POACHED DUCK EGG AND UNI: The presentation on this one threw me off. It was like, ONE HUGE ravioli, but very fIat where it looked like a huge pancake. Inside was some duck egg, and on top was a tiny bit of uni. I kinda thought the uni would have been a major part of this pasta dish. This dish IMO was just okay. 4. SECONDI GRILLED PRIME NY STEAK WIth MUSHROOMS AND BRUSSEL SPROUTS: My BF and I both ordered this, we love a good steak. At medium rare, the steak came out a little bit more on the rare side, good thing I like it more rare but there were moments when I had a tough time chewing the most rare part in the middle. My BF (I DON'T KNOW HOW) finished every single course he got and also managed to finish this one still saying "mmmmmmm" with every bite. I got through 2 of my steak medallions, but just couldn't touch the 3rd. I did finish all the mushrooms and brussel sprouts, they were DELICIOUS. 5. DESSERT FLOURLESS CHOCOLATE CAKE w STRAWBERRY GELATO: My bf ate his gelato only (he is not really a dessert person like me). I ate about half of this flourless cake, but I was not really feeling the dense texture. I really liked the strawberry gelato, but the scoop of it was so small i did not have enough to offset the cake so I left the rest of the cake. I always hate to admit it when my BF chooses all the better food items, but this time he did! Good thing he shares :) Our experience had all the makings of a ROMANTIC evening, between the ambiance, service, food, BUBBLY, I think the man chose a winner! One train of thought is to go to a Zagat's rating restaurant and spend a lot of money and justify both by raving about the place no matter how good or bad it is. The other train of thought is to go in with extraordinary expectations because of the rating and the money. I fall into the latter and this place failed miserably. My wife summarized it best when I left. She said: the atmosphere was blah. The waitress was blah. The food was blah. It made our night blah. There was nothing romantic about it. Well, it was our anniversary after all and we were looking to try something new and a place we normally wouldn't go to. From the reviews and ratings it looked like this would be a sure bet. It was even suggested to us to get roof top seating- excellent suggestion as I don't think the inside could get more stuffy. But even then, on the rooftop, there was absolutely nothing that really wowed me. What did wow me was the Borsette D'Astice Neri, or the homemade black pasta (black from octopus ink). It was absolutely phenomenal and if each and every dish was like this, I would be raving about this place telling everyone I know to come. The confit artichoke salad was very disappointing- where were the artichokes? The duck ravioli was okay at best... I thought marrying two of my favorite dishes might make this amazing and the potential was definitely there. I finished with the prosciutto wrapped scallops were again just okay. And these dishes are relative- considering how much each dish cost, I can't say they were great. The most disappointing thing is that I have had much better dishes around Long Beach than here and none cost nearly as much as this place. The one beef I have from our experience is that I wanted to order per dish and the waitress made it a point to tell us we need to order everything upfront. I feel scammed! Seriously! I would have never gotten my last dish if I had ordered dish-by-dish and maybe that's the strategy, I don't know. I guess I had another beef- water was $2 per caraffe. It would be nice for someone to tell us esp when we're getting a second one. In the grand scheme of things, $2 is nothing but that is exactly what they want you to believe. Our waitress was very robotic. The wine recommendations sucked. I don't know how else to say it. Either she has horrible taste or someone told her the wrong information. She wasn't overly friendly and acted too uptight almost afraid to offend or suggest too much. It really dampened the mood in a hurry. Maybe I'm in the minority or maybe I'm just willing to come out here and admit that I got ripped off and that I'm not going back. The yelp trend over the last 6 months shows it going downward so I am guessing it's not just me who is feeling this way about this place. So if you want to pretend that spending lots of money makes the food taste better than this is absolutely the place for you. For the rest of you, check out other options in Long Beach- there are plenty that will provide the food, the atmosphere, and a friendly, fun waitress to show you an enjoyable night and make you feel good about the money you just spent! read more

I've always wanted to try this out but have been disillusioned by expensive gourmet restaurant where you pay a lot of money for food that was of meager quality. So decided to try this place out during the DineLA event. Did not disappoint: 3 course meal that was tasty and good quality all the way! They have a fantastic wine selection along with whiskey. The waitstaff was really kind, made recommendations regarding wine with the food being served and also whiskey recommendations. So although we were basically eating there through a special offer, they didn't treat us any different where other restaurants if you mention a coupon, special, or any discount the staff has immediately treated the customer differently. Just recently went to Michaels on Naples and boy, was this restaurants the perfect restaurants for any special occasion. First off, the ambience of the restaurant itself is warm and inviting. As soon as you walk through the door, the host greets you. If you are waiting for your table, you have a chance to grab something at the bar, which is right there in front of you as you walk in. Apparently they have an upstairs lounge area, but unfortunately it was being renovated. And if I recall correctly, it's going to open up back up by the end of this month. In the meantime, our host sat us in the newly modeled room that looked completely like an art gallery. It was interesting because I felt like it wasn't really a part of the restaurant, but it was... The feeling you get dining in the room with all the art hanging on the wall is different from once you step into the restaurant. Not necessarily bad, but just a different feel. Regardless of the separated room, the food here is phenomenal. My friend Erin got the seabass, which was cooked perfectly. You know it's an authentic Italian place when they keep the head on. Not only that, they were able to de-bone this fish so well, both Erin and I were stunned. I wasn't able to try Michael's bone marrow, but I am definitely going to try it the next time I'm there. Unlike many places, the bone marrow here was fairly large and personally worth the $$$ especially for the size of that thing. My other favorites were the Fois Gras (an absolute must) and the squash blossoms. The veal (ravioli?) was hearty and had a lot of flavor to it. A little on the saltier side, but I didn't mind it. And lastly, my sausage orecchiette dish didn't compare to all the other dishes, but it was fairly light. Sausage was pretty strong itself, and unfortunately I wasn't a big fan of it. I would rather have gotten the Seabass or maybe one of their Pizettes instead. For dessert, they gave us a cheesecake to thank everyone in the community for supporting Michaels on Naples, especially since they are renovating their upstairs patio. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PLACE FOR ANY SPECIAL OCASSION. The staff is friendly. The restaurant is small and it's as if I am welcomed into someone's home for the first time. The food is specular. What else could you ask for? As far as parking goes, my friend Andy parked around the neighborhood behind Michaels on Naples. I'm so glad we came here for dinner. My friends and I didn't expect the restaurant to be as 'fancy' as it was, but it wasn't stuffy at all. We all decided on the pasta tasting which was $49 for 5-courses. $20 extra for wine pairing. We were given an amuse bouche to start, a little ravioli stuffed with some sort of fish. It was delicate and really tasty. Our first pasta was a lobster risotto -- so good! The rice was a perfect al dente and the texture was not thick and goopy. Instead, it was just pure creaminess in our mouths. Agnolotti with kabocha squash was next, also very delicious. I was worried that the squash would make it a bit sweeter but the flavor was very well balanced. Gigli pasta with braised wild boar ragu was hearty and rich, complex flavors throughout, yet never heavy. Our last savory dish was a gnocchi with braise oxtail. I don't know if we had too much food or what, but this dish was our least favorite. I felt the oxtail needed a little salt and the gnocchi was a little too soft. Dessert was next and since there were so many of us, we each got a different dessert. My favorite was the pumpkin mousse with salted caramel and cream. Our server Roberto also brought out moscato for everyone on the house since we were celebrating a birthday. Such a lovely gesture! Service was great and the food as well. Yum! I've lived in Long Beach for 15 years, and I've heard great things about this place, but for some reason I'd never gone. Michael's is definitely my new favorite high end restaurant in LBC especially now that so many others are closed (what's happening Long Beach!) They have a roof deck which is a great place to eat, and there's a nice bar on the roof as well. The deck is not huge, so if you want to eat up there, ask for it in the reservation. Everything we ate there was amazing. My friend had this porterhouse steak that was really unusual. It was really tender, but it had a completely different color than you would expect. I suspect they smoke the meat a little before they grill it. The desserts were also great. And I know this is a weird thing to say, but the coffee was incredible! I'll be going back. read more

I came here with a friend for his company dinner party and had a fantastic time! The restaurant itself is beautiful with indoor and rooftop dining. The company reserved a private room that has it's own bathroom. It was pretty convenient. I got to sample a few pizzas during cocktail hour. They even brought out some duck liver crostinis compliments of the chef. Those were so good! To start I had a warm spinach salad with pancetta dressing, a poached duck egg and pecorino cheese. It was amazing! One of the best salads I've had. For main, I had the Branzino. The fish was moist and flavorful. I also tried the pasta with lobster. That was just as amazing! First time dining on Naples and I decided on Michaels for a unique experience. The upstairs patio was great and our waiter was very nice and we enjoyed his service very much. The flavor and quality of the food was excellent. Well prepared simple ingredients. A few of our favorite items. Buratta with artichoke and the steak with gnocchi was incredible. Our last course took a while to come out and we had to leave quickly to make our gondola appointment so we were not able to catch dessert. Maybe next time! We would love to go back to try a few more items on the menu and I was bummed we had to cut it short. Will leave more time for our dining experience. There were also a few large groups and parties up stairs, so if you are looking for a more intimate experience maybe try eating downstairs? read more

Worst service ever!! Came here for my birthday dinner, table of 6 with my family. They made us wait 30 mins just for water. We were not acknowledged once and had to confront the waiter. And he wasn't friendly one bit and spilled some water onto the table while pouring. We left. Can't even show you how good the food was because we never got that far. For the price point so not worth it. There was 5 of us and with a few bottles of wine and 20% tip it was close to $600. We ordered so many items from the menu for appetizers and entrees and including dessert and nothing is worth a second visit or a "I must eat that again" vibe. The service from our main waitress was completely mediocre. You know that vibe, when the waitress doesn't give the "She's a nice person feeling". Within half an hour of ordering our appetizers and wine, she felt the need to tell my super nice cousin that we had to leave by 7:30 pm. It was 5:30 pm and seriously we didn't need that stressed and negative pressure. If the restaurant has a limitation of time then be upfront about it and include it on your website. We were actually done before 7:30 pm and the waitress took so long to get back to us and give us the bill that we left at 8 pm. The food was 3 stars and the just "be nice" meter at the restaurant was 2 stars. Will never go back again. The only positive part was spending time with cousins and sisters. read more

So many great reviews, I hate to be so critical, but.... we were initially sat directly underneath an outdoor speaker blaring 80s disco down at us. We pondered our options for about five minutes before anyone brought us a menu, then moved down the row. Disco with fine Italian dining really does not work (I've been a DJ and am 1/2 Italian...). The octopus appetizer was a bit undercooked and difficult to cut into bite sizes down in the bottom of the deep serving bowl. Risotto-stuffed squash blossoms were cheesy with a wonderfully intense basil puree. The NY steak ordered medium was served sliced and thus obviously rare/uncooked in the middle. Perfect farro. The duck was served inartfully as two big slabs on top of undercooked red rice muddled with the corn/nectarine salad. Both entrees came before the wine arrived. Chef's dessert was served without utensils. It was my birthday, we dressed for fine dining, it was not, I won't be signing up for the VIP program. read more

Capesante In Padella $33: Speck wrapped diver scallops with pumpkin risotto and bacon lardons. Light and perfect. Rabbit stuffed with rabbit sausage (special of the day/market price): Amazingly prepared rabbit sausage stuffed into rabbit placed on grilled polenta and greens. linguini with Truffle (special of the day/market price): House made linguini under a perfectly poached quail egg with shaved truffles. MMMMMmmmmm truffles...... This place is top notch and the go-to restaurant for any special occasion or just for some amazingly killer food. If this restaurant was in LA it would be "toast" but considering it's in LB it should be ok. The food was average to pretty good. The corkage policy is pretty aggressive. A friend won't go back after being corked for $120- even after they bought a bottle off the list. Service as good and ok, not spectacular. Owner seems obvious to whats going on overall. read more

I heard great things about this place and had high expectations. Made reservations for Tues at 6:30pm for party of 5 for dinner with coworkers and was promptly seated. There's valet parking for $4 which I would recommend since there was a sign stating any cars parked in the neighboring lots would be towed. Overall, the experience was not so great. Service was OK...the waitress was friendly and smiled, but it felt like the food & desserts were coming out a tad bit late. Many times I had to flag someone down because something we needed was not given or we were ready to order. I will elaborate more below... Pros: The best part of the night was the pasta. We ordered the pork sausage pasta and lobster risotto to share, and both were very good. My boss had ordered the scallop risotto and that was delicious too.....scallops were huge and cooked perfectly. Cons: Presentation - lacking in many of the dishes. The fig burrata was very small. The traditional cold cut appetizer looked and tasted like something from the grocery store. Food itself - we ordered the 36oz. ribeye to share. Waitress did not ask how we wanted it cooked, so I asked her after she took everyone's order and she said "we usually just cook it medium rare." I've never really heard of a restaurant that cooks it a certain way without asking or telling the customer, but I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt so fair enough. The huge piece of meat comes out, and they have a guy in a suit cut it for us which was nice since it saved us the work. However, it was not medium rare. It was well done. The waitress should have picked up on that detail, and the guy cutting it should have too. What would top notch service be to me? As soon as they realized it was over cooked, admit to the mistake, send it back to the kitchen, and bring out a new steak that's medium rare. The steak ended up being dry and chewy...not very good and not worth $140. Details - would have liked the waitress and bussers to pay attention to details a little more. We ordered the 2 aforementioned pasta dishes to share which we told to the waitress, but when they came out they were placed in the middle of the table with no spoons. Also, I was drinking still water and they mixed it with sparkling without asking. Wine - they have an expansive wine list. However, I didn't like the wine that was recommended to us. I asked the waitress for recommendations, and she promptly brought over the sommelier. I showed him a pic of a delicious wine I had last week at Spaghettini and said something similar in taste (med-full body) but a bit lower in price. He tried to upsell me a bottle that was $150.....fair enough, I know he's in the job to make sales. I said half that price please and he recommended a $60 bottle wine...ordered it...and it not very good. It was a lighter body and had a watery after taste. The restaurant is a bit on the smaller side and you feel crammed at times, but it has a dim light setting and can make for a romantic evening. My main beef (no pun) is with the way the steak was cooked and presented. And regarding the details I write about...I hope I don't come across as overly critical, but when the total bill is $476 before tip....this place left a lot to be desired. The food was good, but we got a bit of bait and switch on the wine, they subbed a cheaper vintage and we accepted their recommendation, only to be disappointed and to have paid well above market for an inferior bottle. They dances around the mistake, but they were obviously trying to pull a fast one. read more

THE HIGH POINTS 5 stars for excellent customer service 5 stars for the wine our server selected for us 5 stars for the mezzaluna my friend ordered (Liberty farm duck neck filled pasta, white wine, pistachio) 4 stars for the beet salad (some goat cheese crumbles would make it 5) THE LOW POINTS 1 star for the risotto The risotto was watery, bland and the most disappointing dish I've ever ordered at a fine dining establishment. I would have rather saved $20 and eaten unseasoned rice from a rice cooker. The lobster on the risotto was cooked well and would have been tasty on its own, but I wouldn't try this dish again, especially at $24. 1 star for the over-salted duck A friend ordered the duck and let me try a bite. While it was cooked well, it tasted like a salt lick and was practically inedible. She was hungry enough to choke it down, but I would not recommend it. I would like to give this restaurant another chance, as the bite of mezzaluna I tried was incredible. If it weren't for the great service we received, this review would be 2 stars and I wouldn't likely come back. read more
