I've always liked coming to this particular store. I've always had good customer service here. But, I was impressed today and thought I'd leave a positive review. Another customer didn't have their nose covered with their mask and a passing employee kindly reminded them to also cover their nose. As a high risk person I really appreciate when an employee steps up, especially as people are becoming more volatile these days. I'm not a difficult customer to please. I can find my own merchandise without asking for help. I rarely ask questions about prices or coupons. Many times, I order online and come into the store only to pick up the merchandise. I smile, say Hello, and always say thank you. But the cashiers in Pleasant Hill are so cold, dismissive, and unfriendly. All I need to do is pick up the order, but they glare resentfully, never speak a word of greeting or thanks, and just grunt when spoken to. Example: I tell the cashier: "Thank you ! Have a great day." Cashier reply: Grunts "ugh" and turns away. Clearly, there is NO staff training on even the most basic courtesy towards customers. Very disappointing. read more

This Michaels store and Downtown Pleasant Hill is typically very well stocked but it can be hard to get parking as it shares a parking lot with Bed Bath & Beyond. If you are looking for accessories for your cricket or seasonal craft projects they seem to have plenty of that on hand. They also have quite a bit of floral options and different vases and containers. I always pull up a 40% off coupon on my phone which they will honor for a full priced item. Their prices are a little high compared to Hobby Lobby and Hobby Lobby tends to have more sales and is bigger so it has more in stock. I find if I'm doing a specific project I check Michaels and Hobby Lobby and end up getting something at both places. I will continue to shop at the store and use coupons whenever I can. read more

My friend and I recently came to this Micheals. I actually come here a lot especially on Sunday's, if Hobby Lobby is closed. They have a good selection of normal things you would expect to find at a crafts store. I like how they always have the 40% coupon and various sales that come and go. So disappointed. I always come here. I wanted to pick up storage drawers that were priced at 49.99 on their website and for store pickup but 59.99 in store. They would not give me the website price and told me to do a store pickup and come back tomorrow because it was after 5 and would not match their own price. They have a large selection of items for all of your arts and crafts needs and their aisles are well marked. Sales associates are helpful at both directing customers to items that they need, as well as walking them to the correct aisles if they have a disability, which is kind of them : ) The seasonal displays for Easter, Christmas, etc. are always fun and interesting. They have great discounted sale items, which along with coupons, allow you to save up to 60% -- plus this time I received another coupon for 40% off my next purchase! My daughter loves this place. Everything you need to craft. Everything is always on sale or go on line for a coupon. I was going to give 3 stars because the service is slow and the lines are long but my daughter said to give 5. They also have a place in the back to get stuff framed. Plenty of parking. Oddly enough, Michael's was founded and built by a guy name Michael. Michael Rouleau to be exact. But don't think this is just your quaint local Arts and Crafts store. Think again! There are 90 stores in California alone! Mostly in suburbs, where housewives can kill spare time buying crafts for their kids school projects, silk flowers to decorate the home, and supplies to tap into their inner artist. Good place for gifts, too. Michael took over a bunch of independent stores and combined them into the chain phenomenon which is the Michael's empire. There are now over 1000 in 48 states and Canada! The average store carries about 42,000 items, is about 18,500 sq ft in size, and has annual revenue of about $4 million. So the Michael's chain is a $4 billion dollar corporation, not your local Crafts store. How about Aaron Brothers? Competitor to Michael's perhaps? Think Again! Aaron Brothers is part of Michael's! It is a chain of about 166 stores, mostly in 11 western states. These are smaller, about 5,600 sq ft and about 6,500 items. Mostly art supplies and frames. They also have Recollections, a new concept in Scrapbook stores for DIY scrapbooks. And finally, Star Decorators Wholesale. This is for the commercial and designer resale trade. For art supplies, Michael's isn't the best. Yes, they have some basics. But there are better ones in the City or Berkeley, with better selection of paints, papers, brushes, canvases, etc. But for crafts and small art projects, Michael's isn't bad. This location is pretty typical of the chain. Except most of the people working here seemed like young Junior College kids from Tinker Toy Tech, er I mean nearby Diablo Valley College. I was just looking for push pins to hang a map on the wall. I should have gone to Staples instead. I did finally find a tiny little box, 1 package of push pins over in aisle 21B, after staring very carefully at the entire aisle. Michael's has had negative sales growth the past 2 years in a row. So they are getting aggressive with promotions. Just on the 3 receipts I got for that small box of pushpins, were the following: Custom Framing $50, $100 and $150 off! 40% off any one regular price item! You could win a $500 Michael's Gift Card! Gee, I never got so many receipts and promos for push pins! My final cost for push pins? $1.99 I think all my receipts cost more than that in ink and paper! read more

Want to make a turkey outfit for the Walnut Creek Turkey Trot 5K on Thanksgiving morning? You can get beads, feathers, shirts and puffy fabric paint pens. Get creative! They also have lots of great coupon deals which you can easily pull up on your phone while waiting in line. Or the helpful employees will talk you through this if you need help like I do. I received friendly assistance from our cashier, Deidra, when I couldn't figure it out on my own. We were able to use TWO coupons with our small purchase and ended up saving a good deal of money. The employees here always seem to be happy to help you find something or suggest a good idea. But don't all of these already good deals sort of negate the idea of "better deals" on Thanksgiving?! All I needed was a bit of white acrylic paint and a brush - got outta there for only $1.29! If you know what you need and get in and out in a flash, you'll do alright. I still have horrible flashbacks of being in middle school and needing to come here for insanely overpriced craft items for science projects: foam cones, various pom poms, glitter glue - things where they could extort you because there was literally no where else to get it. I'm 100% certain Michael's made my mom rethink having me, and is probably the sole reason that I'm an only child. Maybe now with Amazon around they've got the competition they need to make prices more reasonable. If you're into scrapbooking, fake floral arrangements, Martha Stewart craft kits and any other variety of things I have absolutely no interest in, this is your place. Yet another amazing store in the Downtown Pleasant Hill Crescent shopping center! I'm not exactly a crafty person, I frequent this store the majority of the time for baking needs. Over the years I have scored different types of cake transporters, icing and decorating sets, and some pretty amazing variety of types of sprinkles. Pearls, glitter, standard sugar, in every color you can think of. If you're frustrated with your grocery store for not carrying black gel icing or hot pink pearl nonpareils, this is the store for you! They also have a wonderful selection of faux flowers, beautiful and colorful and in affordable bunches. And this location is an amazing sight around the holidays - they have Halloween decorations that lean more towards fall decor, but there is still a dose of spooky. And at Christmas time, they have entire villages set up. Be prepared to battle for a parking space, and trust the visit will be well worth your holiday whiles! read more

Called today to see about Michael's donating their surplus gift wrap to our charity organization, as we prepare 400 free toys to an underserved community in our county. First the store manager put me on hold for 8 minutes while he "changed phones" - - I've been in Michael's a dozen times and you can walk around the store twice in less than 8 minutes. When I called back, first he was unavailable, and when I asked if he was busy or avoiding me.. he got on the phone. Manager said the only donations go through corporate in Dallas. 09/21/16: Called the store 11 times from 9am until 1pm. No one answered the phone. It just rang until it disconnected. The reason for my call was that my 87 year old mother forgot her eyeglass in the store and before I make the drive from San Francisco to retrieve them, I'd like to see if they've been recovered. I guess I'll have to add to the volume of commuters already on the road, the waste of gas and time because no one could be bothered to pick up phone. Two days prior I was in the store looking for specific craft items, I asked one of the associates to help me find the item. I showed her a picture and item # from the Michaels website and she could not show me where the items were located and claimed she didn't know. I guess trying to help is too much trouble for her to do. I wonder how much effort it would've taken her to find it vs spending the time making up excuses as to why she couldn't/wouldn't. Yeah, I like going to Michaels, they have all the craft supplies that I didn't know I needed. I usually go for one particular item but end up leaving with a bunch of overpriced crafts that I'm never going to finish. I love searching through my closets and find partially broken craft supplies which I end up selling on Facebook marketplace for a fraction of the price that I paid, it's a great visual representation of how I waste my money, nonetheless, walking into Michaels and imagining all my creative potential is euphoric! Super fun Halloween wreath that will never be put together? Yes please! Scrapbooking supplies to document my dogs third birthday? I need that! Baking goods for my future Pinterest fails? Of course! Went to this Michael's a few times to pick up crafty items. Parking is easy in the lot they share with Bed Bath and Beyond. Prices are a bit on the high end, but many things are on sale and I got a 40% off coupon when I checked out. Their knitting yarn selection isn't that great and the prices seem a bit higher than JoAnn's. A lot of Red Heart, Lion Brand, and their own brand of yarns. It's not stuff yarn snobs would approve of, but hey, you can always use more Peaches n' Cream cotton for dishcloths. They also carry Caron Simply Soft, which is a great bargain acrylic yarn. Their selection of knitting needles is not very good. I was looking for size 7 double-pointed bamboo needles and I couldn't find them. The only DPN bamboos they had were size 8 and 10. However, I did find one last set, discounted 30%, on the clearance rack. Not bad! I also got some beads. Their jewelry making selection is way better than their yarn selection. Also, these items go on sale frequently. They have a large selection of cake decorating things. They do seem a bit understaffed when I went (a Saturday). I waited a while in line and the lady doing the checkout was answering questions and the phone at the same time. She apologized and got me out of there quickly. read more

I have shopped at this location for over 14 years. This store has consistently had extremely poor customer service. I have always (in my mind) blamed it on a corporate level and not supplying enough employees to service their customers. This evening I was shopping at the store looking for a particular item. An employee named Katelin, an extremely helpful young lady, checked the inventory with her scanner and it showed that they had 120 of this particular item I was looking for in stock. She checked several boxes trying to find the items for me, but Katelin had to go to lunch and another employee was called to help. After the second employee looked in just one box, Gina, the manager of the store, told her to stop looking any longer. This was in spite of the fact that not only did their inventory scanner show they had 120 in stock, but also there were several more unopened boxes of the product literally in front of this second employee. This speaks to several things: 1 - The lack of understanding of basic customer service on the part of Gina, the manager. One cannot fault employees, when they are following management direction. The store manager should be a champion of customer service, not the opposite. 2 - If the Manager felt that the scanner was incorrect, it shows a lack of proper inventory management and store organization. This again reflects on the Manager, not individual employees. (If indeed the Manager felt the scanner was inaccurate, this could have been conveyed to the customer, rather than having the employee just say "My manager told me to stop looking" and then literally just walk away) At this point, the stellar attitude and helpfulness displayed by young Katelin will not outweigh the extreme opposite attitude and actions exhibited by Gina the Manager. As a consumer, my only recourse is to no longer patronize not only this particular store, but the Michael's chain as a whole. I would rather drive an extra 15 miles and pay slightly more for higher quality service (and superior products in all honesty) than to subject myself to this sort of treatment and attitude. Perhaps if others do the same, Michael's Corporate will realize they need to make a change in their management style. read more

I needed to get some gifts for my friends since I forgot to shop for presents but then I got the idea to go to Michaels in hopes that they had something good. And thankfully they had lots of items that my friends would have liked so I picked out a few things and saw a semi long line, but the line was for the cash register so I went to self check out because they just added that which is so cool because it's like safe ways and a quicker way for me. So I definitely recommend this Michaels because it's super quick checkout line and they have almost everything you could want as far as crafts and candy. read more

Although this Michael's is conveniently located because it's on my way home from work, the staff here is so unpleasant that I cannot bear to go here anymore. I have a Michael's in my hometown that is 100x better. I have issues with several staff members here (rude, unknowledgeable, reeking of cigarettes), but there is one cashier that is so horrible that she takes the cake. I've told everyone I know to avoid this Michael's because of her. My first encounter with her was miserable. I had a few items to purchase and I had some coupons to use. I walked up and I told her specifically that I had coupons and I tried to explain which coupons I wanted to use with which items. Right away she starts in telling me to "be quiet" and "calm down," just rude. She refused to listen to my requests and kept screwing things up. She ended up ringing me up 3 times. I was getting progressively frustrated, which made her progressively rude. I think she told me to "calm down" 5 or 6 times. Just ring me up the way I asked. I've been a Michael's customer for 30 years, I know how the coupons work. Finally, she figured things out and told me some excuse about being old and slow...I was so irritated at that point, I could care less. That was annoying, but it was worse the second time I had her. The other day I went in to take advantage of several BOGO sales. I also had a 50% off coupon so I decided to splurge on a big ticket item to use the coupon. I saw I was stuck with that same cashier again so I was determined to not let her make me upset. When I walked up, the first thing she says is, "you have coupons, I know." Yes, I replied, and I tried to explain that I wanted to use the coupon on the expensive item. Right away, she's going, "shhhhh!" And making a pushing down gesture with her hands. Huh? I'm trying to navigate this and she says, "just wait a minute. Wait a minute." She rings up the item, scans the coupon, then demands that I swipe my payment. Uh, ok, but huh? She makes me pay for the item and pulls up a receipt. Then she starts to ring up one other item, the whole time she keeps saying "shhhh. Calm down calm down." I don't know what she's doing. She goes to use the same 50% off coupon on the item she rang up, but I stop her, "no, no, these are buy one get one." "Oh. Well I didn't know. They never tell us these things. I didn't have to ring up this separately." "I didn't know what you were doing," I told her. My God, do I look like I commit fraud? Cause I don't. The coupon says you can only use it once per day, so that's what I was going to do. She's acting like it's a drug deal or something "shhh shhh calm down" She ended up saying something like, "I was trying to do you a favor." I didn't ask for a favor. I just wanted to buy my stuff and leave. Without being told time and again to "calm down," especially since I was not excited in any way. There are a few stores that I absolutely dread going into. I think that every boy dislikes JoAnne Fabric, Hobby Lobby, and Michaels. Each one makes you check your man card at the door. If you look at any guy with his wife, girl friend, or mother you can see the glazed over look. It is though he has been interrogated for the last 12 hours and is sleep deprived. Michaels is the kryptonite for all health non-crafting men. I will say that the staff are extremely helpful and friendly. There is always a sale on. Best of all, when you finally get the green light to leave there are several cashiers ready to assist you. What did I learn today?
