(Fyi: This review is about the frame shop. I've had a good experience with the rest of the store.) I'm giving the frame shop one star. I could not be less satisfied with the quality of the product I ended up with. Short explanation: The people behind the counter were friendly, respectful, and polite. I suspect the issues I encountered were the result of Michael's policy and not any faults of their own - they seem like perfectly lovely people and I don't want to get them in trouble. With that being said, here are my issues: They took far, far too long to explain the frame options. I just asked for two plain white frames for two artworks, which I did not think was that complicated of an issue, but between their glitchy, slow computer system and how incredibly inefficiently they explained everything, it took them FORTY-FIVE MINUTES to show me two different options. By then I was exhausted and just wanted to get the whole thing over with, go get some water, and sit down, so I took what they offered even though I didn't like it. The frames I ended up with, I felt, were really ugly (who knows how long I would have had to wait if I'd asked for an alternative), unbelievably expensive for the size and style, and do not seem good quality at all (one of the paintings came detached and is now loose inside the glass). Further details: I also felt like they offered me a much more expensive, elaborate option than necessary for the larger of the two artworks I wanted framed. I told them I just wanted a plain frame that would show the cool 'raw' edge of the paper my print was printed on (I am attaching a photo of the kind of effect I am talking about. I have seen it done many times before, so I didn't think it was that much of a tall order). They told me the only way this could be achieved was by having not one, not two, but three separate mattings stacked on top of each other (the central one of which, incidentally, was the same color as the paper, so in the end the edge didn't show after all...), one of which was colored even though I didn't want that, and some kind of edge trimming thing (even though that wasn't in contact with the edge of the print at all, so I don't see why there was a need for it), which became very expensive, making the frame like 150% larger than it needed to be, and was not what I was after at all. I found the effect very offputting and strange-looking. I was after a cool, modern, streamlined look and ended up with something clunky, bulky and old-fashioned. I also did not want to spend over 300 dollars (which is what it came to with those three different mattings) to frame a medium-sized print. But again, I had spent so long standing there waiting after a long day at work (there was no option to sit, even though there were several people waiting in line for a very long time - what do people with mobility issues do?) that I felt like I had to just cut my losses and take what they'd offered so I could get the heck out of there and not waste the rest of my evening. They should have just been up-front with me that they couldn't achieve what I was after, instead of spending half an hour dragging out the explanation of this other frame style they had in mind, until I just caved in out of sheer exhaustion. Also, for some reason, there's this weird thing with their computer where when they drew up the total price estimate based on frame size and style, it gives you an estimate that's like 600% too high, then when they hit refresh it displays again with the real price. (E.g. the first frame originally rang up at a thousand dollars, then when they hit 'recalculate' or something - I didn't really understand what the glitch was - it then came up at 300.) It one hundred per cent felt like a tactic to make the final price not seem so absurd. Sketchy. And the piece de resistance: When I brought the print and its $300+ frame home and unwrapped it, what did I find? The print had come unstuck and was bouncing around loose inside the glass. And they had stuck it onto the back matting with what appeared to be little glue dots (maybe that's standard practice, but regardless, I could have just bought a $6 pack of glue dots and mounted it myself. And I don't think it is best practice on their part, considering the print came unstuck!) That was the last straw for me. Absolutely ridiculous. Folks, don't waste your money. I feel robbed. read more

These guys do an amazing job with custom frames, mounting, etc. Pretty crappy selection of prints, but I managed to find a couple I liked. The frame guy helped me choose a frame (it was an awkward size print so nothing fit perfectly). He helped me cut the print, and matched a matte background which he cut, measured, and set for me. He attached a wire to the back of the frame to hang it, and wrapped it all up for me in cardboard - all free of charge. Sam was meticulous...precise...neat, and definitely had an eye for what looks good. read more

After circling the parking lot several times, I finally found a parking space in front of Bed Bath and Beyond and headed to the entrance. Out front were many bargains such as 1$ a roll decorative ribbon and 60% off spring silk flowers. Walked thru the door and searched for the scrap booking papers which luckily were right up front in plain view. My lucky day ....59 cents a sheet sale for most of the 1ft x 1ft sheets. Also 50% off on jumbo books of themed sheets like animal prints, scenery, etc... I ventured out of the paper section to have a look around and things just did not seem to flow like they should. I felt overwhelmed like I do at Costco and headed back to the front to pay. Oh wait, I forgot my coupon. Not a problem here. Just pull it up from the Internet and the cashier will gladly scan it right from your phone. This store is huge and looks like it is full of supplies to make any craft you can imagine, but the only employee I saw was the cashier so I left before making an attempt to search on my own for an exacto knife and a compass. read more

Way cheaper than the Paper Source in Bethesda (but exactly the same materials), and much higher quality than the AC Moore down the street (and possibly cheaper as well for specific items). I wish I had come here before I hit up the aforementioned stores above. Also, awesome coupons, and the clearance sections are treasure troves. read more

I was -very- satisfied with Michael's selection of craft products. I was primarily there for yarn and crochet materials, but the variety was exceptional. No, it's not a lot of high-end yarn, but that's not its purpose! They also have a selection of clearance yarn, which is fantastic. Can try out colors that you wouldn't necessarily buy normally for way less. I spent $20 and got a ton of yarn, and a few crochet hooks and some markers. The customer service was good, and the cashier was friendly and speedy. Very happy with my experience. read more

I am back in school going for an engineering degree and desperately needed a T-square, protractor and a few speciality pencils. I had little luck finding them else where (including the university bookstore), but found everything I needed here! I also ended up walking out with a giant picture frame for a steal and a few small craft projects for when I'm bored and not studying. I love Michaels! read more

I've gone to Michael's for years with my mom and past girlfriends. Recently, I tried them for their custom framing. Not only were the recommendations spot-on, the quality is FAR better than anticipated! The turn around time seemed lengthy (2-weeks), but I've never had anything custom framed before so this could be normal? You can count that I'll be using their framing department every time I want something like this done again. read more

Being on a tighter budget this year for Christmas gifts, I decided to get a bit crafty and make some personalized gifts. I know sometimes this can end up costing more in the long run, but I think I came out pretty good. I stopped by Michael's with Jaclyn S. today to browse around for some crafty inspiration. I came away with numerous gift ideas along with a few key staples to keep around that will be useful well past the holiday season (they had dollar bins with packs of cute cards, 8 per pack! definitely useful, and considering the usual cost of a greeting card, a definite bargain!) I was very tempted to go overboard (who am I kidding, I probably did)... but all will be put to good use. I definitely see more trips here in the future to satisfy any creative urges that hit! read more

I came to Michaels twice this week and had two interesting experiences. The first time I went, I bought some scrapbooking goods and the second time was to return the stuff that didn't work out. My negative review has nothing to do with the cleanliness or the products they have. It has to do with their lack of customer service. On my first visit, when I was checking out, I asked the cashier what their return policy was. She did not answer me. She just looked at me. I thought she didn't hear me so I repeated myself. she said "I heard. We take everything back, just make sure to bring the receipt." No big deal compared to lack of customer service I received from a MANAGER when I brought a few things back to return tonight. First, when approaching the register she had the worst stink face I have seen in a while. You couldn't get her to crack a smile even if you were Puss in Boots from Shrek when he did that doe-eyed, adorable look. Second, she grabbed my receipt, looked it over then only gave me a refund for one of my items. I had to say "wait, how much is my refund? I thought it would be more." She said, in a very unconcerned manner "oh, there are three of them." I did not get a "I'm sorry" or "my bad", she just took the receipt back and proceeded to give me the refund. I would not have written this review if it was just because of my encounter with the first cashier but I felt like I had to when the "customer experience MANAGER" was so rude. I know plenty of people who hate their job or have bad days at work or have family stuff going on at home but they still manage to come into work with a smile on their face and try to provide a genuinely good experience for the customer because customer service is their job and they want to keep it. How are you going to hire or promote someone as "customer experience" manager when they have bad customer service? What kind of example is she setting for the other employees working there? There are plenty of hardworking people out there who need a job. Hire a military veteran. I guarantee you he or she will come to work every day and give you 100% with a smile on their face. If I could give this Michaels negative stars I would. We went to have a picture custom framed here. We dropped it off and came in two weeks later, on the day they said it would be ready. Well it was not ready and would not be for another week. When we finally went in to get it, the guy pulled it out, and the matting had these huge black marks on it! We tried to tell him and he kept saying they were already there when we dropped it off. Please explain how that is possible. The man simply would not accept that they had messed up, so we just figured we would try to Magic Eraser it off when we got home. After unframing and rematting the thing ourselves at home, we went to hang it, only to discover a strange shiny black mark on the frame. The framers at Michaels had dinged up the frame and instead of doing the right thing and starting over or actually fixing it, they tried to cover their mistake with black Sharpie. So now anytime the sun is up or a light is on, the brassy sheen of Sharpie is obvious on our frame. In all, I am very disappointed in the customer service and craftsmanship at this Michaels. I expected better, especially after paying $250 for it (and that was at half off!). I would suggest that if you need professional framing and actually want it done right, go to a real frame shop or do it yourself. read more

Cashiers don't know their own sales. I bought two frame that were supposed to be 40% off because they were expressions but when I brought it to the cashiers attention she said no not all frames. I showed her it was an expressions and that's what was in sale. She saw the manager come out from behind the door and pushed me off on the manager rudely. Luckily the manager was nice enough to go check to come back to tell her it was in sale. The cashier had terrible customer service. The store is well organized but not really stocked. Most things I needed were gone so now I have to make another 10 min drive to the next one. Not to mention bring your own bags, I had to pay for every bag I used. Not use to that being I'm not from here. They were only .05 cents but really? I won't be back. read more

Unfinished Wood Letters...After almost getting hit by a driver backing up and not looking in his rear view mirror...I made it inside the store to find out they don't have the unfinished wooden letters that I wanted to paint. Then I realize that the exit door can only be reached via the checkout line. Hey there, Michael - do you realize that blocking the only exit door with merchandise may potentially be a fire hazard and forcing people to wait in the check out line to leave the store? I have always felt that this store has been organized, which I definitely value in a crafts store. That being said, I went into the store looking for frames to hold a set of three art prints. The store had 2 available, so I opted to order the last one online. To my surprise, Michaels does not offer free shipping to the store even when they're out of an item which was a disappointment, but I ordered anyway. Shipping to the store is a few bucks less than shipping directly to your home, so I opted to do this and I quickly received a delivery confirmation within 4 days of ordering. Two days after receiving the delivery confirmation from UPS, I went to the store to pick up my order. The woman at the register informed me that it was not there, so I asked about the tracking information. She then directed me to her manager who was a total jerk. He informed me that UPS tracking "doesn't mean squat" and I'll just have to wait until the next business day when UPS comes again. Uh, seriously? I'm cool with waiting, but the lack of tact in the customer service department was stunning. Anyway, got the call the next business day that my order was in. Picked it up and it was marked as delivered the day I received the confirmation. If you haven't assembled your orders from the dock, just be honest about it. Happy to go back to this store when it doesn't involve interactions with the manager. read more

We decided to use Michael's to adhere a poster to foam board. Pretty simple. Three weeks later we had not heard from them and we called to see if it was ready. Yes. My husband picked it up but he should have asked them to redo it as the top of the foam board was completely ragged. Really? Didn't the person doing the job notice this? $38.00! read more

This place used to be a pretty good hobby supply store, but when I came in today it was a complete joke, everything was going well until I got to the cash registers to pay for my items and none of them were working, which caused a line of about 20 people to pile up. While this is a technological issue and not necessarily a problem with the store itself, the staff did nothing to help. They all sat around chatting, with only one member seeming to be working on the problem. When customers asked how long this would take, staff members either didn't reply or simply said "I dunno" or something of that sort. This place should have a better system incase something like this happens. read more

I'm more of an artist than a crafty person. Recently I had to stop into Michael's to pick up some materials for my Fiancee and sister-in-law. The store layout is crammed with all sorts of materials for crafts projects. So while I am used to the walking into an art supply store, Michael's was a bit overwhelming. The greatest part of the visit was the staff, they were more than willing to help me out when I couldn't find what I was looking for and best of all I didn't feel like an idiot having to ask. If it's arts and craft related Michael's probably has it in one of the numerous aisles. It very easy to walk in for one thing and walk out with a bunch of things. I can say that if I ever need anything crafty I'll definitely be back in to grab it because I'm pretty sure they'll have it! read more

This review is for the framing department, particularly Ketty (Katie). We had a complicated set of ten items to be framed for a professional office. She was incredibly informative and helpful in picking out the right frames, colors, mats, etc. It was a big job, and she made it a breeze. Most of all, she was so nice and friendly. Even when other customers were waiting while she helped us with this big job, she was very attentive to everyone. I did not expect such great personal service at a large national change. Best of all, when I went back to pick up the order three weeks later, she remembered me and asked about my wife, who had just had a baby. Kudos to Michaels for having such an awesome employee. One of the managers, Tim, assisted me in deciding on which supplies were highly recommended. He also gave me new project ideas to work on! I normally frequent the Michaels on Georgia Ave but this pass Saturday morning I stopped at the Rockville location since I needed a few things and was in the area. I needed to make a return ( I over bought for my daughters party a couple of weeks ago) for the same products in different colors. My initial interaction with a young lady was very pleasant. I informed her I didn't have a receipt and she told me to get what I wanted and come back. I did just that and returned to line but this time I was being helped by a women name Rita. I explained my situation to Rita and she proceeded to process my return. She scanned my merchandise a couple of times then exclaimed to me that I hadn't purchase the items at Michaels but I probably got it at AC Moore since they carry the same items. I further exclaimed that I live walking distance from GA Ave and I buy all my supplies there and that I in fact haven't in fact shopped at AC Moore in a couple years since I realized Michaels has better products and offer awesome coupons. She then insisted that I purchased the items at AC Moore and refused my return. I again exclaimed I had not and requested to see a manager. The manager ( the brunette I initially spoke with) came over and Rita told her that she was refusing my return because she couldn't locate the sku in the system probably because I bought it at AC Moore. The young lady then told Rita that she needed to locate he sku because it should be in the system. Rita insisted I bought my merchandise at AC Moore and the young lady took it upon herself to find the sku and gave it to Rita. Rita then continued with my return with a irritated attitude as if I were doing something to piss her off. I don't understand why she insisted I was trying to return product that I had purchased at another store. AC Moore is not even 2 minutes down the road and they sell the same stuff. Had I purchased the items there I would have took them there since it was a same item exchange to begin with ( I was returning yellow candy melts in exchange for white,pink, and blue for a gender reveal party I was catering) why would I have gone through the motions with product from a different store. I felt totally accused of wrong doing and it really made me not ever want to go to this Michaels no matter if I'm in the area or not. She was totally rude and I don't think she should be on cashier if that's how she handles customers. read more

I like Michael's and my wife and I are frequent shoppers. But, we will never shop this location again. I went to check the price on an Item I believed to be half off. The boy at the register and his overly confident fellow employee had no idea my wife was in line behind me. They openly mocked me and made fun of me in front of other customers while I was gone. When I returned, I had no idea this was going on. What an embarrassment, not for me... for them. What would prompt two human beings to do something like that? Unprofessional and damn right shameful. If I could give this store zero stars I would! What was supposed to be a quick 10 minute shopping trip took almost an hour. I had difficulty finding everything and when I was finally able to find an employee to ask her where to find a product she gave me an attitude and wasn't helpful at all. I found another employee and when I asked him for help he looked me straight in the eye then walked away. I found only one thing of the dozen things I needed, the rest were out of stock. There was a huge line and only one register open and the cashiers were very slow. Don't waste your time coming here unless you want a horrible shopping experience. read more

This is usually my favorite place to find great bargains and craft projects without spending a fortune. I also used to go here to buy necessities, like wrapping paper for the holidays. When I went in to "my" Michaels on Rockville Pike, I asked about where their Chanukah section was. I needed wrapping paper and some other decorations. I couldn't find anything. I asked the manager at the store, because I was confused. He said that they never received any Chanukah items this year. Instead, those items were sent to the Aspen Hill location. I was confused, did all of the Rockville Jews move to Aspen Hill? When he realized he had no Chanukah items for his customers, what did he do? He sent them to Bed Bath and Beyond, next door. I asked him if he contacted "Corporate" to inquire, but he hadn't noticed until after Chanukah. If he hadn't received any Christmas wrapping paper, would he have noticed? Would he have sent folks to Bed Bath and Beyond? Or, to the location at Aspen Hill? Could he have reached out to "Corporate" and told them that his customer base is diverse and needs their religious needs met? He didn't seem too upset, just said it was a poor business model that he had no control over. So, I put down all of the items I was about to purchase, and went to A.C. Moore. Sorry Michaels, you're going to have to do better for me to return. I'm yelping about it because the manager didn't seem interested in addressing my concerns when I discussed it with him in person. read more

I've not been happy with Michaels. They have one cashier that seems pretty glee-ful when she tells me I can't use my coupon on something. I go in to get a friend some scrapbooking supplies sometimes and they don't have as large of a selection as I would like. The store does not seem super-clean to me. Prices are OK though. read more

I went to this store but since there is NO HELP I literally could not find anything in a timely way. It would have taken two hours.
