Surprised by these positive reviews. Her office lied to me about whether they covered my discount plan. Luckily, I saw through their B.S. I have Cigna Dental Discount Card (not insurance). When I called to make an appointment the receptionist acknowledge that t Dr. Knabe takes Cigna Dental Discount cards. However, when I inquired about the fees, the receptionist couldn't string her story together. To make a long story short. Dr. Knabe's office was not aware of the Cigna fee schedule because they do not participate in Cigna Dental Discount Plan! I was lied to! Obviously, it is unethical to lie and try to trick someone into utilizing a service that you know would not be covered. Please note: that Dr. Knabe is currently listed as a participator for Cigna Dental Discount Plans on their site yet her office doesn't provide the discounts. After 26 years, I have finally found THE dentist. I've had many terrible experiences with dentists and she makes me forget all my horrid past times at the dentist! Dr. knabe is very personable, detail oriented, just simply amazing. If you don't understand something she says, she will even draw things out to help you understand! She takes her time and NEVER makes you feel unwanted or rushed. From the moment you step into her office being greeted by her receptionist to the moment you leave, you will walk out feeling like a superstar. Not like Dr. Knabe needs another glowing review, but here it is! I just came back from one of the most thorough cleanings of my life...and most pleasant too. Dr. Knabe is so sweet, personable and meticulous. She spent a whole hour scraping away and then buffing my teeth (because as she said, "you can't wax a car without cleaning it first."). I feel like my mouth is practically tartar-free now! She also took time to walk me through my x-rays and discuss any potential future gum issues (gotta start flossing now...). She even drew me a picture to show how the body fights off tooth tartar build up. Fascinating and super helpful. I will definitely be passing her name along to all of my friends (most of whom are terrified of their current dentists). read more

I had my first visit with Dr. Knabe today, using a LivingSocial deal for an exam, cleaning, and x-ray. Admittedly, I haven't been to a dentist in a couple of years and warned her up front. She was great, allowing plenty of time to talk about the issues I'm having and the things I want to focus on fixing now. She also gave me a thorough teeth cleaning (apparently, I have tenacious tartar!), and went over my x-rays with me while carefully explaning what she's seeing. We've set up our next appointment for some needed maintenance on existing dental work and I can't wait to see the results! WARNING: No wussy handshakes here! This woman has a firm grip! I've been seeing Dr. Knabe for a few years now and if you're looking for an amazing dentist, stop your search now! I initially found Dr. Knabe after deciding that my previous dentist, who was located within blocks of my home, was no longer providing me the service I was looking for. As luck would have it, a deal on LivingSocial popped up for her office, which was not too far from where I work, and I decided to check out the office. I was pleasantly surprised that the entire time I was in the office, she personally performed absolutely EVERYTHING herself, without an assistant! Yes you read that correctly. She took my x-rays, cleaned my teeth, and performed what is without question the most thorough examination of my teeth and overall dental health to this point in my life. She was super informative about every detail of how to best take care of my teeth and mouth, and all the while, very welcoming and for lack of a better way to put it.... happy. Not to bash the dental profession, but I have yet to come across a dentist who operates with such a positive, warm, and welcoming attitude as Dr. Knabe, in fact no where even close. I continued to see Dr. Knabe throughout the remainder of that year and because I had a wedding coming up roughly 4 months after my most recent check-up with her, she told me to come back right before my wedding to make sure that everything was in tip top shape. I expected a quick cleaning, just to remove any coffee stains or surface gunk, simply to make sure I was perhaps more photogenic on my big day. Much to my sheer amazement, it was a full-on appointment; cleaning, exam, the whole kit-and-caboodle. Most amazing of all, she did it pro-bono. Now she'd probably like me to keep that little secret to myself but I was absolutely blown away by her offer. I had anticipated paying for the service the whole while but was really taken aback by her generosity. I can honestly say I legitimately look forward to seeing Dr. Knabe, and I don't know many people who can say the same about their dentist. Most of us enjoy the outcome of a regular dental visit, but I think it's safe to say we could all just as soon skip over the time it takes to get to that point. Simply the best Dental experience I've ever had! I'm usually lazy about writing reviews on Yelp, I'm more of a lurker, but I felt very motivated to write Michelle a review since she is great at what she does and as stated above, I had the best dental experience of my life! Like many people, I'm hesitant to go to my yearly exam/cleanings, but as soon as I arrived at her tidy clean office with a nice view of downtown and sat back in the comfortable chair, I was put at ease. Michelle is a very friendly, energetic and cheerful dentist who truly enjoys her job, her persona makes you feel comfortable and she's also a great conversationalist if you're so inclined. Things I appreciated about my dental cleaning and check up. 1) She started on time.. 2) She cleaned very gently, no pain unlike other dentists I've gone to who seemed more intent on getting me out of there asap. She really took her time and I could tell she was trying to minimize any pain throughout. 3) She explained many things to me when I asked various ?s about dental health in general, such as how gingivitus starts, and saw that I was a grinder when I sleep and suggested I use a mouthpiece. She also taught me the proper way to floss! Don't laugh bc many of you may also be doing it wrong! After explaining the reasons specificially why it's important to floss daily etc, I will now finally do it since I UNDERSTAND the reasons it's so important thanks to Michelle. She even went in depth with the x-rays to explain my current predicament, Michelle went above and beyond, I felt as if I am much better prepared to maintain my teeth thanks to her thoughtful advice! 4) No pressure or "hard sell" on getting necessary work done from her asap, just a factual analysis on how your teeth are and suggestions. 5) A nice gift bag of toothpaste, toothbrush, mouthwash, etc at the end which was a nice touch. Conclusion- You won't find a more personable and competent DDS in Chicago, Michelle is clearly an expert in her field and truly cares to inform and educate you on maintaining your smile as well as ensuring you feel as little pain as possible, couldn't ask for anything more! read more

Jumping on the 5-star bandwagon. I had my first visit with Dr. Knabe last week and she was very professional and detailed. I was her last appointment of the day and while she had a wedding to attend to that evening, not once did I feel rushed during my visit. She took the time to explain my x-rays, was very thorough with my teeth cleaning, and addressed any questions/concerns I had. She also offered her professional opinion on some upcoming dental procedures I'll be doing which I appreciated. Dr. Knabe is super friendly and can put any worried patient, like myself, at ease. Going to a new dentist can be scary, but Dr. Knabe was wonderful! I have lived in Chicago for almost 6 years now, but I usually wait until holidays and go to the dentist I have been seeing since I was 12. Unfortunately, I don't make it to Memphis as often, so I took a chance and bought a YouSwoop deal for Michelle's office. Since I needed to be at work by 9am, so I was excited to find out that she takes early morning appointments and could get me in at 7am. I really hate wasting work hours in a waiting room, so this was a big plus for me. When I got to the office, I was greeted by Dr. Knabe. She was very friendly and professional, and she made me feel comfortable and at ease. Luckily, I didn't have any major issues with my teeth, but I felt like Michelle did a very thorough job cleaning and checking my gums, teeth, etc. for any problems. She did a great job of explaining to me how to keep my teeth/gums healthy, and she even pulled out the colored crayons to show me the details. I hate when dentists just stare at your teeth, mark up their charts, and casually say "hmmm" every few minutes, so it was great to have someone who was so informative. Plus, the chair is a nice touch. Two words: massage chair! Add that to the great view, and it's hard to believe you are sitting in a dentist's office. Also, she doesn't try to sell products, which I really liked. I even asked her about teeth whitening products and procedures, and she gave me information without trying to sell me anything. Instead of focusing on selling services, she does a great job of getting to know her clients and providing top-notch service. Last night was my first experience with Dr. Knabe and I absolutely love her! She is very thorough and explained EVERYTHING she was doing. I only went in for a cleaning, but she took a lot of time to talk to me about my teeth as well as my other dentist experiences, which weren't all that great! I LOVE this woman! I used to hate going to the Dentist, but she has changed the whole experience for me. Comfortable seat (vibrating chair), great view, wonderful conversation, late office hours, and no waiting in a busy waiting room while a receptionist sits there answering phones. It is a very personal one on one experience. I hadn't been in a while and I was worried about it hurting and she gave me some numbing gel just to be nice for my cleaning. Honestly, I'll never go to anyone else for my dental care as long as Dr Knabe is in practice. This is not a one-time review, I've been to over 4 visits for routine care. Dr Knabe and Valarie are incredible, make you feel like your dental care is the most important thing in the world for that moment in time, make you feel like you're family, and deliver top notch dental care. Scheduling is easy - the office is incredibly responsive and has good availability. Easy to get to in the loop, literally right off the red line. I love that Dr Knabe is so personable, and is also clearly an expert in her field. She takes the time to teach me about my teeth (and how to care for them) during my appointments - I'm actually excited to go home and floss. She somehow has figured out how to always make you feel like she has all the time in the world for you, while keeping up with her busy schedule. It's nice to know I have a "go to" person who really, honestly cares when it comes to dental care. I was referred by my brother (who also loves her) and will refer all of my friends. As for the negative reviews below, Dr Knabe has never tried to sell me anything to make money (actually has advised against things I didn't need that I asked about), and as a general rule, you should check to see if your insurance covers where you are going (MD or DDS) in advance. I've found that Valarie and Dr Knabe are very forthright on if insurance will cover things. For example, 1. I've switched insurance in between visits and after I let them know that, Valarie double checked I was covered before booking my next follow up 2. I asked about mouthgards literally today for teeth grinding and although Dr Knabe thinks I need one, her and Val are going to check if my insurance covers 0, 50% or 100% before moving forward (when I could have been convinced to pay out of pocket). This is really a terrific dental office that is few and far between, and not once did I get feeling that they were trying to make a profit off of me. Just updating my review. Yes she's a great dentist, but I thought she cared more about me. I found her on Living Social for a cleaning, and kept going there after without insurance. She gave me a little discount so I could afford it and I liked going there, and I actually enjoyed it since her and I talked a lot about our lives, our relationships, etc. Then I tried to make an appointment for a regular cleaning and she is "no longer giving discounts" to anyone. I didn't know that me coming in for an hour twice a year was so much work. Just hurts the most because I did think we were cool and now it's all about money. Plus, I've asked several times to talk to her about it to see what we can do and she won't even email or call back. So there's my new two cents. I've gotta find a new dentist over like $50. By far the best, most personal dental experience I've had in Chicago. Dr. Knabe made me feel comfortable instantly and gave me the personal treatment throughout my visit. She went through my dental history with me, really listening and offering explanations for things that had never been explained to me before. She did the most thorough cleaning I've honestly ever had, and again, walked me through every step of the process with detailed information and tips for improving certain areas in the future. I've never been given this kind of insight into dental care before, and I really appreciated it. Instead of just saying "floss more" like most other dentists, she explained the science and technique behind not only flossing, but also brushing and rinsing. I'm not one to be nervous to visit the dentist, but I think that those who are would really take comfort in Dr. Knabe's open, personal approach. She also didn't overwhelm me at the end by telling me everything I needed done and how much it would cost and "make an appointment right away." She was truly understanding of how expensive and nerve-wrecking dental care can be, and told me she'd work with me to figure out the best way to pay for it. Joining the choir here. I just had the nicest, most fun visit to the dentist! Who says that?? Dr Knabe greeted me at reception and did the cleaning herself. Normally, I barely have known my dentists because they sweep in at the end to do a quick exam. Not Dr Knabe. She really gets to know patients this way. Her office is small, clean, and modern with a great city view! She is VERY nice, personable, and interesting. I felt like I was making a new friend. We talked a lot and she still took extra time to explain things and make sure I understood. She seems genuine and will definitely be my go to dentist. Dr. Knabe was my dentist for many years. I had a ridiculous amount of work done by her over the years, fillings, crowns, veneers, and two or more checkups each year. She was personable, friendly, bright and entertaining. Most importantly, I didn't dread visits to the dentist. She took my insurance when I had it, and offered me discounted rates when I didn't. Overall I never questioned her abilities as a general dentist, she seemed to be honest and capable. However, reading a few of the other reviews prompted me to leave one myself. After nearly ten years as a patient, the relationship ended abruptly over a petty dispute about full payment for a crown. Thinking back on it, it's very odd. I had a root canal done elsewhere (Water Tower Endo, great place) and Dr. Knabe was handling the crown. It took seven (7) weeks for Dr. Knabe to get the crown installed. There were at least three crowns created, the first two not fitting properly, seven total visits to Dr. Knabe for this one crown, one when the office turned out to be closed. It's possible that this tooth presented some unique situation making it more difficult, or maybe she was overly particular or perfectionistic about the fit, but that really wasn't the problem. Yeah, it was a major hassle that took a lot of my time, but it's payment for this crown that was the source of our break-up. I was charged $1520 total for the porcelain crown fused with high noble metal, core buildup with pin and prefab post and core in addition to crown. I paid $620 at my crown prep visit. My insurance kicked in its bit ($165) about a week later. And then I paid $245 at my visit to try on crown attempt #2. When the final crown was installed over a month later, I owed $490. Not that I was keeping track, I just wanted to get out of the dental office with my new tooth. Figured I would receive a bill in the mail, as I had in past instances, but the assistant insisted I pay the balance in full immediately. I was taken aback at her forcefulness, and then Dr. Knabe's agreement. Having never missed or refused a payment, I was confused, did they think I wasn't going to pay? I had been seeing Dr. Knabe for nearly ten years and paid for every service I received. I had just spent nearly two months getting a single, overpriced crown fitted. I had plenty of reasons to be disappointed with the situation and length of time it had taken, reasons to question her competence in installing crowns period, but I had no intention of refusing payment (neither expressed or otherwise). I guess she did, or maybe she had lots of patients skip out on paying their bills, or maybe she was just in a jam that month. I don't know, it was unusual and nothing like the treatment I'd received up to that point. I left that day. Mailed them payment in full for the crown work and an additional $45 to get copies of all my records mailed to me. It was such a weird situation, sudden and unexpected, I felt I should report it here. read more

Valarie was very uninformed when it came to billing. I was never told they were out of network. Very unprofessional. Best and most personable dentist I have ever met! I was referred by my husband who always raved about her and encouraged me to go but I tended to go to dentists that were closer to where we lived. After a disappointing routine cleaning at my previous dentist, I was told I had 3 cavities (never had a cavity in my life and I'm 31) and it was all very doom and gloom until I made an appointment for a second opinion with Dr. Knabe. She and Valerie work so wonderfully together and were so kind to me and helped ease any anxieties I had about potential dental work. She found 1 small cavity, as opposed to 3 that the previous dentist said I had, and walked me through what to expect. This review is overdue. I first saw Dr. Knabe in June, 2012. I had gotten a Groupon for a cleaning/x-ray. She was absolutely great. So friendly, knowledgeable, kind and informative. She explained everything she was doing and then what needed attention, tooth-wise, in my mouth and why. Her work is great too. I recently went in for a really huge cavity and it was easy. We talked practically the whole time, except when I couldn't because of implements in my mouth. She's just a great lady. Since I work for myself, I have no dental insurance so Dr. Knabe very, very kindly gave me 30% off work to be done, which is a huge bargain. Finding a dentist this good who would do that is highly unusual. She cares about your teeth. After she did the deep cavity, she explained it one day would probably need a root canal and told me to call her if it got suddenly painful or sensitive. It didn't and hasn't so far. She actually called me two days later to check on it! I have never had a doctor or dentist do that ever. I enjoy seeing Dr. Knabe and I think she's fabulous. All of these reviews are right on point. Michelle is incredibly nice, very friendly, explains what she's doing, which helps put you at ease. Also, the chair has an option that gives patients a gentle massage during cleanings (make sure you ask for that up front). I currently live in Hyde Park and would recommend other people on the South Side to take a short #2 or #6 bus ride up downtown to Michelle for their dentistry needs. Everything from making an appointment, to going through with the appointment, and walking out the door was excellent! She is by far the best dentist I've been to. Very very very nice!!!
